Boundary value problems with signed measure data for semilinear Schr\"odinger equations

Consider operators $L_{V}:=\Delta + V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N$. Assume that $V\in C^\alpha(\Omega)$ satisfies $|V(x)| \leq \bar a\,\mathrm{dist}(x,\partial\Omega)^{-2}$ in $\Omega$ and that $L_V$ has a (minimal) ground state $\Phi_V$ in $\Omega$. We derive a representation formula for signed supersolutions (or subsolutions) of $L_Vu=0$ possessing an $L_V$ boundary trace. We apply this formula to the study of some questions of existence and uniqueness for an associated semilinear boundary value problem with signed measure data.

Schrodinger equations with very singular potentials in Lipschitz domains

Consider operators $L^{V}:=\Delta + V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N$. Assume that $V\in C^{1,1}(\Omega)$ and $V$ satisfies $V(x) \leq \overline{a} \mathrm{dist}(x,\partial\Omega)^{-2}$ in $\Omega$ and a second condition that guarantees the existence of a ground state $\Phi_V$. If, for example, $V>0$ this condition reads $1<c_H(V)$ (= the Hardy constant relative to $V$). We derive estimates of positive $L_V$ harmonic functions and of positive Green potentials of measures $\tau\in {\mathfrak M}_+(\Omega;\Phi_V)$. These imply estimates of positive $L_V$ supersolutions and of $L_V$ subsolutions. Similar results have been obtained in [7] in the case of smooth domains.

Boundary value problems for semilinear Schr\"odinger equations with singular potentials and measure data

We study boundary value problems with measure data in smooth bounded domains $\Omega$, for semilinear equations involving Hardy type potentials. Specifically we consider problems of the form $-L_V u + f(u) = \tau$ in $\Omega$ and $\mathrm{tr}^*u=\nu$ on $\partial \Omega$, where $L_V= \Delta+V$, $f\in C(\mathbb{R})$ is monotone increasing with $f(0)=0$ and $\mathrm{tr}^*u$ denotes the normalized boundary trace of $u$ associated with $L_V$. The potential $V$ is typically a H\"older continuous function in $\Omega$ that explodes as $\mathrm{dist}(x,F)^{-2}$ for some $F \subset \partial \Omega$. In general the above boundary value problem may not have a solution. We are interested in questions related to the concept of 'reduced measures', introduced by Brezis, Marcus and Ponce for $V=0$. For positive measures, the reduced measures $\tau^*, \nu^*$ are the largest measures dominated by $\tau$ and $\nu$ respectively such that the boundary value problem with data $(\tau^*,\nu^*)$ has a solution. Our results extend results for the case $V=0$, including a relaxation of the conditions on $f$. In the case of signed measures, some of the present results are new even for $V=0$.

Large solutions of semilinear equations with Hardy potential

We consider equations of the form $-L_\mu u +f(u)=0$ in a smooth domain $\Omega$, where $L_\mu=\Delta + \mu\delta^{-2}$ and $\delta(x)$ denotes the distance of the point $x$ to the boundary of the domain. The nonlinear term $f$ is positive, increasing and convex on $(0,\infty)$, satisfies the Keller-Osserman condition and some additional technical assumptions. The conditions are satisfied, in particular, by power and exponential nonlinearities. We discuss the question of existence and uniqueness of large solutions when $\mu>0$.

Estimates of sub and super solutions of Schr\"odinger equations with very singular potentials

Consider operators $L_{V}:=\Delta + V$ in a bounded smooth domain $D$ in $R^N$. Assume that $V\in C^1(D)$ and $V$ may blow up at the boundary at most as $1/\delta^2$ where $\delta$ denotes distance to the boundary. Assume also that $L_{V}$ has a ground state $\Phi_V$ that satsifies an additional condition on its behavior near the boundary (see Section 3). These conditions are satisfied by a large class of potentials (see Section 6). We derive sharp, two-sided estimates of weighted integrals of positive $L_V$ harmonic functions and $L_V$ potentials. These lead to a-priori estimates of positive $L_V$ supersolutions and subsolutions assuming (in the latter case) existence of $L_V$ boundary trace.

Schr\"odinger equations with singular potentials: linear and nonlinear boundary value problems

Let $\Omega \subset {\mathbb R}^N$ ($N \geq 3$) be a $C^2$ bounded domain and $F \subset \partial \Omega$ be a $C^2$ submanifold of dimension $0 \leq k \leq N-2$. Put $\delta_F(x)=dist(x,F)$, $V=\delta_F^{-2}$ in $\Omega$ and $L_{\gamma V}=\Delta + \gamma V$. Denote by $C_H(V)$ the Hardy constant relative to $V$ in $\Omega$. We study positive solutions of equations (LE) $-L_{\gamma V} u = 0$ and (NE) $-L_{\gamma V} u+ f(u) = 0$ in $\Omega$ when $\gamma < C_H(V)$ and $f \in C({\mathbb R})$ is an odd, monotone increasing function. We establish the existence of a normalized boundary trace for positive solutions of (LE) - first studied by Marcus and Nguyen for the case $F=\partial \Omega$ - and employ it to investigate the behavior of subsolutions and super solutions of (LE) at the boundary. Using these results we study boundary value problems for (NE) and derive a-priori estimates. Finally we discuss subcriticality of (NE) at boundary points of $\Omega$ and establish existence and stability results when the data is concentrated on the set of subcritical points.

Estimates of Green and Martin kernels for Schr\"odinger operators with singular potential in Lipschitz domains

Consider operators of the form $L^{\gamma V}:=\Delta +\gamma V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N$. Assume that $V\in C^1(\Omega)$ satisfies $|V(x)| \leq \bar a \,\mathrm{distance}\,(x,\partial\Omega)^{-2}$ for every $x\in \Omega$ and $\gamma$ is a number in a range $(\gamma_-,\gamma_+)$ described in the introduction. The model case is $V(x)= \mathrm{distance}\,(x,F)^{-2}$ where $F$ is a closed subset of $\partial\Omega$ and $\gamma< c_H(V)=$ Hardy constant for $V$. We provide sharp two sided estimates of the Green and Martin kernel for $L^{\gamma V}$ in $\Omega$. In addition we establish a pointwise version of the 3G inequality.

Boundary singularities of solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in the half-space with a Hardy potential

We study a nonlinear equation in the half-space $\{x_1>0\}$ with a Hardy potential, specifically \[-\Delta u -\frac{\mu}{x_1^2}u+u^p=0\quad\text{in}\quad \mathbb R^n_+,\] where $p>1$ and $-\infty<\mu<1/4$. The admissible boundary behavior of the positive solutions is either $O(x_1^{-2/(p-1)})$ as $x_1\to 0$, or is determined by the solutions of the linear problem $-\Delta h -\frac{\mu}{x_1^2}h=0$. In the first part we study in full detail the separable solutions of the linear equations for the whole range of $\mu$. In the second part, by means of sub and supersolutions we construct separable solutions of the nonlinear problem which behave like $O(x_1^{-2/(p-1)})$ near the origin and which, away from the origin have exactly the same asymptotic behavior as the separable solutions of the linear problem. In the last part we construct solutions that behave like $O(x_1^{-2/(p-1)})$ at some prescribed parts of the boundary, while at the rest of the boundary the solutions decay or blowup at a slower rate determined by the linear part of the equation.

Moderate solutions of semilinear elliptic equations with Hardy potential under minimal restrictions on the potential

We study semilinear elliptic equations with Hardy potential $\mathrm{(E)} \; -L_\mu u+u^q=0$ in a bounded smooth domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb R^N$. Here $q>1$, $L_\mu=\Delta+\frac{\mu}{\delta_\Omega^2}$ and $\delta_\Omega(x)=\mathrm{dist}(x,\partial\Omega)$. Assuming that $0\leq \mu<C_H(\Omega)$, boundary value problems with measure data and discrete boundary singularities for positive solutions of $\mathrm{(E)}$ have been studied earlier. In the present paper we study these problems, in arbitrary domains, assuming only $-\infty<\mu<1/4$, even if $C_H(\Omega)<1/4$. We recall that $C_H(\Omega)\leq 1/4$ and, in general, strict inequality holds. The key to our study is the fact that, if $\mu<1/4$ then in smooth domains there exist local $L_\mu$-superharmonic functions in a neighborhood of $\partial\Omega$ (even if $C_H(\Omega)<1/4$). Using this fact we extend the notion of normalized boundary trace to arbitrary domains, provided that $\mu<1/4$. Further we study the b.v.p. with normalized boundary trace $\nu$ in the space of positive finite measures on $\partial\Omega$. We show that existence depends on two critical values of the exponent $q$ and discuss the question of uniqueness. Part of the paper is devoted to the study of the linear operator: properties of local $L_\mu$ subharmonic and superharmonic functions and the related notion of moderate solutions.

Elliptic equations with nonlinear absorption depending on the solution and its gradient

We study positive solutions of equation (E1) $-\Delta u + u^p|\nabla u|^q= 0$ ($0\leq p$, $0\leq q\leq 2$, $p+q>1$) and (E2) $-\Delta u + u^p + |\nabla u|^q =0$ ($p>1$, $1<q\leq 2$) in a smooth bounded domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N$. We obtain a sharp condition on $p$ and $q$ under which, for every positive, finite Borel measure $\mu$ on $\partial \Omega$, there exists a solution such that $u=\mu$ on $\partial \Omega$. Furthermore, if the condition mentioned above fails then any isolated point singularity on $\partial \Omega$ is removable, namely there is no positive solution that vanishes on $\partial \Omega$ everywhere except at one point. With respect to (E2) we also prove uniqueness and discuss solutions that blow-up on a compact subset of $\partial \Omega$. In both cases we obtain a classification of positive solutions with an isolated boundary singularity. Finally, in Appendix A a uniqueness result for a class of quasilinear equations is provided. This class includes (E1) when $p=0$ but not the general case.

Moderate solutions of semilinear elliptic equations with Hardy potential

Let $\Omega$ be a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$. We study positive solutions of equation (E) $-L_\mu u+ u^q = 0$ in $\Omega$ where $L_\mu=\Delta + \frac{\mu}{\delta^2}$, $0<\mu$, $q>1$ and $\delta(x)=\mathrm{dist}\,(x,\partial\Omega)$. A positive solution of (E) is moderate if it is dominated by an $L_\mu$-harmonic function. If $\mu<C_H(\Omega)$ (the Hardy constant for $\Omega$) every positive $L_\mu$- harmonic functions can be represented in terms of a finite measure on $\partial\Omega$ via the Martin representation theorem. However the classical measure boundary trace of any such solution is zero. We introduce a notion of normalized boundary trace by which we obtain a complete classification of the positive moderate solutions of (E) in the subcritical case, $1<q<q_{\mu,c}$. (The critical value depends only on $N$ and $\mu$.) For $q\geq q_{\mu,c}$ there exists no moderate solution with an isolated singularity on the boundary. The normalized boundary trace and associated boundary value problems are also discussed in detail for the linear operator $L_\mu$. These results form the basis for the study of the nonlinear problem.

Nonlinear elliptic equations with measures revisited

We study the existence of solutions of the nonlinear problem $$ \left\{ \begin{alignedat}{2} -\Delta u + g(u) & = \mu & & \quad \text{in } \Omega,\\ u & = 0 & & \quad \text{on } \partial \Omega, \end{alignedat} \right. $$ where $\mu$ is a Radon measure and $g : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ is a nondecreasing continuous function with $g(0) = 0$. This equation need not have a solution for every measure $\mu$, and we say that $\mu$ is a good measure if the Dirichlet problem above admits a solution. We show that for every $\mu$ there exists a largest good measure $\mu^* \leq \mu$. This reduced measure has a number of remarkable properties.

Positive solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations with subquadratic growth in the gradient

We study positive solutions of equation (E) $-\Delta u + u^p|\nabla u|^q= 0$ ($0 1$) and other related equations in a smooth bounded domain $\Omega \subset {\mathbb R}^N$. We show that if $N(p+q-1)<p+1$ then, for every positive, finite Borel measure $\mu$ on $\partial \Omega$, there exists a solution of (E) such that $u=\mu$ on $\partial \Omega$. Furthermore, if $N(p+q-1)\geq p+1$ then an isolated point singularity on $\partial \Omega$ is removable. In particular there is no solution with boundary data $\delta_y$ (=Dirac measure at a point $y\in \partial \Omega$). Finally we obtain a classification of positive solutions with an isolated boundary singularity.

Boundary trace of positive solutions of supercritical semilinear elliptic equations in dihedral domains

We study the generalized boundary value problem for (E)\; $-\Delta u+|u|^{q-1}u=0$ in a dihedral domain $\Gw$, when $q>1$ is supercritical. The value of the critical exponent can take only a finite number of values depending on the geometry of $\Gw$. When $\gm$ is a bounded Borel measure in a k-wedge, we give necessary and sufficient conditions in order it be the boundary value of a solution of (E). We also give conditions which ensure that a boundary compact subset is removable. These conditions are expressed in terms of Bessel capacities $B_{s,q'}$ in $\BBR^{N-k}$ where $s$ depends on the characteristics of the wedge. This allows us to describe the boundary trace of a positive solution of (E)

Positive solutions of a class of semilinear equations with absorption and schr\"odinger equations

Several results about positive solutions -in a Lipschitz domain- of a nonlinear elliptic equation in a general form $ \Delta u(x)-g(x,u(x))=0$ are proved, extending thus some known facts in the case of $ g(x,t)=t^q$, $q>1$, and a smooth domain. Our results include a characterization -in terms of a natural capacity- of a (conditional) removability property, a characterization of moderate solutions and of their boundary trace and a property relating arbitrary positive solutions to moderate solutions. The proofs combine techniques of non-linear p.d.e.\ with potential theoretic methods with respect to linear Schr\"odinger equations. A general result describing the measures that are diffuse with respect to certain capacities is also established and used. The appendix by the first author provides classes of functions $g$ such that the nonnegative solutions of $ \Delta u-g(.,u)=0$ has some "good" properties which appear in the paper.

Semilinear elliptic equations admitting similarity transformations

In this paper we study the equation $-\Delta u+\rho^{-(\alpha+2)}h(\rho^{\alpha}u)=0$ in a smooth bounded domain $\Omega$ where $\rho(x)=\textrm{dist}\,(x,\partial \Omega)$, $\alpha>0$ and $h$ is a non-decreasing function which satisfies Keller-Osserman condition. We introduce a condition on $h$ which implies that the equation is subcritical, i.e. the corresponding boundary value problem is well posed with respect to data given by finite measures. Under additional assumptions on $h$ we show that this condition is necessary as well as sufficient. We also discuss b.v. problems with data given by positive unbounded measures. Our results extend results of \cite{MV1} treating equations of the form $-\Delta u+\rho^\beta u^q=0$ with $q>1$, $\beta>-2$.

Reduced limit for semilinear boundary value problems with measure data

We study boundary value problems for semilinear elliptic equations of the form $-\Delta u+g\circ u=\mu$ in a smooth bounded domain $\Omega\subset R^N$. Let $\{\mu_n\}$ and $\{\tau_n\}$ be sequences of measure in $\Omega$ and $\partial \Omega$ respectively. Assume that there exists a solution $u_n$ of the equation with $\mu=\mu_n$ subject to boundary data $\tau_n$. Further assume that the sequences of measures converge in a weak sense to $\mu$ and $\tau$ respectively and $\{u_n\}$ converges to $u$ in $L^1(\Omega)$. In general $u$ is not a solution of the boundary value problem with data $(\mu,\tau)$. However there exist measures $(\mu^*,\tau^*)$ such that $u$ satisfies the equation with $\mu$ replaced by $\mu^*$ and with $u=\tau^*$ on the boundary. The pair $(\mu^*,\tau^*)$ is called the reduced limit of the sequence $\{(\mu_n,\tau_n)\}$. We investigate the relation between the weak limit and the reduced limit and the dependence of the latter on the sequence.

Fading absorption in non-linear elliptic equations

We study the equation $-\Delta u+h(x)|u|^{q-1}u=0$, $q>1$, in $R^N_+=R^{N-1}\ti R_+$ where $h\in C(\bar{R^N_+})$, $h\geq 0$. Let $(x_1,..., x_N)$ be a coordinate system such that $R^N_+=[x_N>0]$ and denote a point $x\in \RN$ by $(x',x_N)$. Assume that $h(x', x_N)>0$ when $x'\neq 0$ but $h(x',x_N)\to 0$ as $|x'|\to 0$. For this class of equations we obtain sharp necessary and sufficient conditions in order that singularities on the boundary do not propagate in the interior.
