A proof of a conjecture on permutation polynomials

In this paper, we use finite fields and linear algebra methods to resolve a conjecture by T. Zhang, L. Zheng, H. Wang, J. Peng and Y. Li (Finite Fields Appl. 110 (2026) 102743) concerning permutation pentanomials.

Permutation polynomials over finite fields from low-degree rational functions

This paper considers permutation polynomials over the finite field $F_{q^2}$ in even characteristic by utilizing low-degree permutation rational functions over $F_q$. As a result, we obtain two classes of permutation binomials and six classes of permutation pentanomials over $F_{q^2}$. Additionally, we show that the obtained binomials and pentanomials are quasi-multiplicative inequivalent to the known ones in the literature.

A proof of a conjecture on permutation trinomials

In this paper we use algebraic curves and other algebraic number theory methods to show the validity of a permutation polynomial conjecture regarding $f(X)=X^{q(p-1)+1} +\alpha X^{pq}+X^{q+p-1}$, on finite fields $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}, q=p^k$, from [A. Rai, R. Gupta, {\it Further results on a class of permutation trinomials}, Cryptogr. Commun. 15 (2023), 811--820].

Non-permutation phenomena in trivariate families over $\F_{2^m}$ and resolution of a conjecture

Constructing permutation polynomials over finite fields, particularly those with simple algebraic structure in multiple variables, is a fundamental problem with applications in cryptography and coding theory. Recently, Li and Kaleyski (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2024) generalized two sporadic quadratic APN permutations into infinite families of trivariate functions. Motivated by their work, we investigate conditions under which generalized trivariate functions fail to be permutations. We establish necessary conditions on coefficient parameters that prevent the permutation property, provide a complete computational classification for small field extensions, and prove general non-permutation results. As a key application of our algebraic geometry approach, we resolve the permutation part of a conjecture by Beierle, Carlet, Leander, and Perrin (Finite Fields Appl., 2022) regarding a related trivariate form. Specifically, we prove that for all odd characteristic-2 extension degrees $m \geq 23$, their function $C_u$ is not a permutation over $\mathbb{F}_{2^m}^3$ for any $u \in \mathbb{F}_{2^m}^*$, resolving the permutation part of their conjecture for sufficiently large fields.

A connection between the boomerang uniformity and the extended differential in odd characteristic and applications

This paper makes the first bridge between the classical differential/boomerang uniformity and the newly introduced $c$-differential uniformity. We show that the boomerang uniformity of an odd APN function is given by the maximum of the entries (except for the first row/column) of the function's $(-1)$-Difference Distribution Table. In fact, the boomerang uniformity of an odd permutation APN function equals its $(-1)$-differential uniformity. We next apply this result to easily compute the boomerang uniformity of several odd APN functions. In the second part we give two classes of differentially low-uniform functions obtained by modifying the inverse function. The first class of permutations (CCZ-inequivalent to the inverse) over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ ($p$, an odd prime) is obtained from the composition of the inverse function with an order-$3$ cycle permutation, with differential uniformity $3$ if $p=3$ and $n$ is odd; $5$ if $p=13$ and $n$ is even; and $4$ otherwise. The second class is a family of binomials and we show that their differential uniformity equals~$4$. We next complete the open case of $p=3$ in the investigation started by G\" olo\u glu and McGuire (2014), for $p\geq 5$, and continued by K\"olsch (2021), for $p=2$, $n\geq 5$, on the characterization of $L_1(X^{p^n-2})+L_2(X)$ (with linearized $L_1,L_2$) being a permutation polynomial. Finally, we extend to odd characteristic a result of Charpin and Kyureghyan (2010) providing an upper bound for the differential uniformity of the function and its switched version via a trace function.

Some new classes of (almost) perfect $c$-nonlinear permutations

The concept of differential uniformity was recently extended to the $c$-differential uniformity. An interesting problem in this area is the construction of functions with low $c$-differential uniformity and a lot of research has been done in this direction in the recent past. Here, we present three classes of (almost) perfect $c$-nonlinear permutations over finite fields of even characteristic.

Boomerang uniformity of a class of power maps

We consider the boomerang uniformity of an infinite class of (locally-APN) power maps and show that its boomerang uniformity over the finite field $\F_{2^n}$ is $2$ and $4$, when $n \equiv 0 \pmod 4$ and $n \equiv 2 \pmod 4$, respectively. As a consequence, we show that for this class of power maps, the differential uniformity is strictly greater than its boomerang uniformity.

The binary Gold function and its c-boomerang connectivity table

Here, we give a complete description of the c-Boomerang Connectivity Table for the Gold function over finite fields of even characteristic, by using double Weil sums. In the process we generalize a result of Boura and Canteaut (IACR Trans. Symmetric Cryptol. 2018(3) : 290-310, 2018) for the classical boomerang uniformity.

On the c-differential uniformity of certain maps over finite fields

We give some classes of power maps with low $c$-differential uniformity over finite fields of odd characteristic, {for $c=-1$}. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a linearized polynomial to be a perfect $c$-nonlinear function and investigate conditions when perturbations of perfect $c$-nonlinear (or not) function via an arbitrary Boolean or $p$-ary function is perfect $c$-nonlinear. In the process, we obtain a class of polynomials that are perfect $c$-nonlinear for all $c\neq 1$, in every characteristic. The affine, extended affine and CCZ-equivalence is also looked at, as it relates to $c$-differential uniformity.

Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials and Dickson polynomials

We give a complete classification of Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials from the composition of Dickson polynomials of arbitrary kind and monomials over finite fields. Moreover, by using a variant of the Weil bound for the number of points of affine algebraic curves over finite fields, we discuss the planarity of the obtained Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials. Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials play a crucial role in coding theory and cryptography.

Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials and reversed Dickson polynomials

We discuss the problem of classifying Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials from the composition of reversed Dickson polynomials of arbitrary kind and monomials over finite fields of odd characteristic. Moreover, by using a variant of the Weil bound for the number of points of affine algebraic curves over finite fields, we discuss the planarity of all such Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials. Planar Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials have applications in many areas including cryptography and coding theory.
