Energy Loss Versus Energy Gain of Heavy Quarks in a Hot Medium

We study the energy loss and the energy gain of heavy quarks in a hot thermal medium. These include the study of the energy change due to the polarization and to the interaction with the thermal fluctuations of the medium. The dynamics of the heavy quarks with the medium is described by the Wong equations, that allow for the inclusion of both the backreaction on the heavy quarks due to the polarization of the medium, and of the interaction with the thermal fluctuations of the gluon field. Both the momentum as well as the temperature dependence of the energy loss and gain of charm and bottom quark are studied. We find that heavy quark energy gain dominate the energy loss at high-temperature domain achievable at the early stage of the high energy collisions. This finding supports the recently observed heavy quarks results in Glasma and will have a significant impact on heavy quark observables at RHIC and LHC energies.

Energy loss of heavy quarks in the isotropic collisional hot QCD medium

Collisional energy loss of heavy partons (charm and bottom quarks) has been determined within the framework of semi-classical transport theory implying Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collisional kernel. Hot QCD medium effects have been incorporated while employing a quasi-particle description of the medium in terms of effective gluons, quarks and antiquarks with respective temperature dependent effective fugacities. The momentum dependence of the energy loss for charm and bottom quark has been investigated. It is observed that with the increase in momentum of the heavy quarks, the loss increases sharply for the smaller values and reaches a saturation later. Further, as compared to the charm quark, bottom quark losses less energy at a particular momentum and collisional frequency. The energy loss is seen to increase with increasing collisional frequency. We also provide a comparative study of the results obtained using BGK-kernel than those using relaxation time approximation (RTA)-kernel and found them consistent with each other. The medium effects in all the situations are seen to play quite significant role.

Dissociation of heavy quarkonia in an anisotropic hot QCD medium in a Quasi-Particle Model

The present article is the follow up work of, Phys.\ Rev.\ D {\bf 94}, 094006 (2016), where we have extended the study of quarkonia dissociation in (momentum) anisotropic hot QCD medium. As evident by the experimentally observed collective flow at RHIC and LHC, the momentum anisotropy is present at almost all the stages after the collision and therefore, it is important to include its effects in the analysis. Employing the in-medium (corrected) potential while considering the anisotropy (both oblate and prolate cases) in the medium, the thermal widths and the binding energies of the heavy quarkonia states (s-wave charmonia and s-wave bottomonia specifically, for radial quantum numbers n = 1 and 2) have been determined. The hot QCD medium effects have been included employing a quasi-particle description. The presence of anisotropy has modified the potential and then the thermal widths and the binding energies of these states in a significant manner. The results show a quite visible shift in the values of dissociation temperatures as compared to the isotropic case. Further, the hot QCD medium interaction effects suppress the dissociation temperature as compared to the case where we consider the medium as a non-interacting ultra-relativistic gas of quarks (anti-quarks) and gluons.
