Implicit Poisoning Attacks in Two-Agent Reinforcement Learning: Adversarial Policies for Training-Time Attacks

In targeted poisoning attacks, an attacker manipulates an agent-environment interaction to force the agent into adopting a policy of interest, called target policy. Prior work has primarily focused on attacks that modify standard MDP primitives, such as rewards or transitions. In this paper, we study targeted poisoning attacks in a two-agent setting where an attacker implicitly poisons the effective environment of one of the agents by modifying the policy of its peer. We develop an optimization framework for designing optimal attacks, where the cost of the attack measures how much the solution deviates from the assumed default policy of the peer agent. We further study the computational properties of this optimization framework. Focusing on a tabular setting, we show that in contrast to poisoning attacks based on MDP primitives (transitions and (unbounded) rewards), which are always feasible, it is NP-hard to determine the feasibility of implicit poisoning attacks. We provide characterization results that establish sufficient conditions for the feasibility of the attack problem, as well as an upper and a lower bound on the optimal cost of the attack. We propose two algorithmic approaches for finding an optimal adversarial policy: a model-based approach with tabular policies and a model-free approach with parametric/neural policies. We showcase the efficacy of the proposed algorithms through experiments.

Swarm Intelligence-based Extraction and Manifold Crawling Along the Large-Scale Structure

The distribution of galaxies and clusters of galaxies on the mega-parsec scale of the Universe follows an intricate pattern now famously known as the Large-Scale Structure or the Cosmic Web. To study the environments of this network, several techniques have been developed that are able to describe its properties and the properties of groups of galaxies as a function of their environment. In this work we analyze the previously introduced framework: 1-Dimensional Recovery, Extraction, and Analysis of Manifolds (1-DREAM) on N-body cosmological simulation data of the Cosmic Web. The 1-DREAM toolbox consists of five Machine Learning methods, whose aim is the extraction and modelling of 1-dimensional structures in astronomical big data settings. We show that 1-DREAM can be used to extract structures of different density ranges within the Cosmic Web and to create probabilistic models of them. For demonstration, we construct a probabilistic model of an extracted filament and move through the structure to measure properties such as local density and velocity. We also compare our toolbox with a collection of methodologies which trace the Cosmic Web. We show that 1-DREAM is able to split the network into its various environments with results comparable to the state-of-the-art methodologies. A detailed comparison is then made with the public code DisPerSE, in which we find that 1-DREAM is robust against changes in sample size making it suitable for analyzing sparse observational data, and finding faint and diffuse manifolds in low density regions.

Extension of local positive definite $\mathbb{Z}_{2}^{n}$-superfunctions

By defining a concept of boundedness for $ \mathbb{Z}_2^n $-superfunction, we show that each local positive definite $ \mathbb{Z}_2^n $-superfunctions, which is bounded in some sense, on a $ \mathbb{Z}_2^n $-Lie supergroup has a positive definite extension to all of the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}^{n}$-Lie supergroup.

PALMER: Perception-Action Loop with Memory for Long-Horizon Planning

To achieve autonomy in a priori unknown real-world scenarios, agents should be able to: i) act from high-dimensional sensory observations (e.g., images), ii) learn from past experience to adapt and improve, and iii) be capable of long horizon planning. Classical planning algorithms (e.g. PRM, RRT) are proficient at handling long-horizon planning. Deep learning based methods in turn can provide the necessary representations to address the others, by modeling statistical contingencies between observations. In this direction, we introduce a general-purpose planning algorithm called PALMER that combines classical sampling-based planning algorithms with learning-based perceptual representations. For training these perceptual representations, we combine Q-learning with contrastive representation learning to create a latent space where the distance between the embeddings of two states captures how easily an optimal policy can traverse between them. For planning with these perceptual representations, we re-purpose classical sampling-based planning algorithms to retrieve previously observed trajectory segments from a replay buffer and restitch them into approximately optimal paths that connect any given pair of start and goal states. This creates a tight feedback loop between representation learning, memory, reinforcement learning, and sampling-based planning. The end result is an experiential framework for long-horizon planning that is significantly more robust and sample efficient compared to existing methods.

Scattering of kinks in the $Bφ^{4}$ model

In this study, based on the $φ^4$ model, a new model (called the $Bφ^4$ model) is introduced in which the potential form for the values of the field whose magnitudes are greater than $1$ is multiplied by the positive number $B$. All features related to a single kink (antikink) solution remain unchanged and are independent of parameter $B$. However, when a kink interacts with an antikink in a collision, the results will significantly depend on parameter $B$. Hence, for kink-antikink collisions, many features such as the critical speed, output velocities for a fixed initial speed, two-bounce escape windows, extreme values, and fractal structure in terms of parameter $B$ are considered in detail numerically. The role of parameter $B$ in the emergence of a nearly soliton behavior in kink-antikink collisions at some initial speed intervals is clearly confirmed. The fractal structure in the diagrams of escape windows is seen for the regime $B\leq 1$. However, for the regime $B >1$, this behavior gradually becomes fuzzing and chaotic as it approaches $B = 3.3$. The case $B = 3.3$ is obtained again as the minimum of the critical speed curve as a function of $B$. For the regime $3.3< B \leq 10$, the chaotic behavior gradually decreases. However, a fractal structure is never observed. Nevertheless, it is shown that despite the fuzzing and shuffling of the escape windows, they follow the rules of the resonant energy exchange theory.

Faster-Than-Light Solitons in 1 + 1 Dimensions

The existence of a faster-than-light particle is in direct opposition to Einstein's relativity and the principle of causality. However, we show that the theory of classical relativistic fields is not inherently inconsistent with the existence of the faster-than-light particle-like soliton solutions in $1+1$ dimensions. We introduce two extended KG models ($k$-fields) that lead to a zero-energy and a nonzero-energy stable particle-like solution with faster-than light speeds, respectively.

Detection of extragalactic Ultra-Compact Dwarfs and Globular Clusters using Explainable AI techniques

Compact stellar systems such as Ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) and Globular Clusters (GCs) around galaxies are known to be the tracers of the merger events that have been forming these galaxies. Therefore, identifying such systems allows to study galaxies mass assembly, formation and evolution. However, in the lack of spectroscopic information detecting UCDs/GCs using imaging data is very uncertain. Here, we aim to train a machine learning model to separate these objects from the foreground stars and background galaxies using the multi-wavelength imaging data of the Fornax galaxy cluster in 6 filters, namely u, g, r, i, J and Ks. The classes of objects are highly imbalanced which is problematic for many automatic classification techniques. Hence, we employ Synthetic Minority Over-sampling to handle the imbalance of the training data. Then, we compare two classifiers, namely Localized Generalized Matrix Learning Vector Quantization (LGMLVQ) and Random Forest (RF). Both methods are able to identify UCDs/GCs with a precision and a recall of >93 percent and provide relevances that reflect the importance of each feature dimension %(colors and angular sizes) for the classification. Both methods detect angular sizes as important markers for this classification problem. While it is astronomical expectation that color indices of u-i and i-Ks are the most important colors, our analysis shows that colors such as g-r are more informative, potentially because of higher signal-to-noise ratio. Besides the excellent performance the LGMLVQ method allows further interpretability by providing the feature importance for each individual class, class-wise representative samples and the possibility for non-linear visualization of the data as demonstrated in this contribution. We conclude that employing machine learning techniques to identify UCDs/GCs can lead to promising results.

Medical Imaging and Computational Image Analysis in COVID-19 Diagnosis: A Review

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. The disease presents with symptoms such as shortness of breath, fever, dry cough, and chronic fatigue, amongst others. Sometimes the symptoms of the disease increase so much they lead to the death of the patients. The disease may be asymptomatic in some patients in the early stages, which can lead to increased transmission of the disease to others. Many studies have tried to use medical imaging for early diagnosis of COVID-19. This study attempts to review papers on automatic methods for medical image analysis and diagnosis of COVID-19. For this purpose, PubMed, Google Scholar, arXiv and medRxiv were searched to find related studies by the end of April 2020, and the essential points of the collected studies were summarised. The contribution of this study is four-fold: 1) to use as a tutorial of the field for both clinicians and technologists, 2) to comprehensively review the characteristics of COVID-19 as presented in medical images, 3) to examine automated artificial intelligence-based approaches for COVID-19 diagnosis based on the accuracy and the method used, 4) to express the research limitations in this field and the methods used to overcome them. COVID-19 reveals signs in medical images can be used for early diagnosis of the disease even in asymptomatic patients. Using automated machine learning-based methods can diagnose the disease with high accuracy from medical images and reduce time, cost and error of diagnostic procedure. It is recommended to collect bulk imaging data from patients in the shortest possible time to improve the performance of COVID-19 automated diagnostic methods.

Stability Catalyzer for a Relativistic Non-Topological Soliton Solution

For a real nonlinear Klein-Gordon Lagrangian density with a special solitary wave solution (SSWS), which is essentially unstable, it is shown how adding a proper additional massless term could guarantee the energetically stability of the SSWS, without changing its dominant dynamical equation and other properties. In other words, it is a stability catalyzer. The additional term contains a parameter $B$, which brings about more stability for the SSWS at larger values. Hence, if one considers $B$ to be an extremely large value, then any other solution which is not very close to the free far apart SSWSs and the trivial vacuum state, require an infinite amount of energy to be created. In other words, the possible non-trivial stable configurations of the fields with the finite total energies are any number of the far apart SSWSs, similar to any number of identical particles.

Introducing a Relativistic Nonlinear Field System With a Single Stable Non-Topological Soliton Solution in 1+1 Dimensions

In this paper we present a new extended complex nonlinear Klein-Gordon Lagrangian density, which bears a single non-topological soliton solution with a specific rest frequency $ω_{s}$ in $1+1$ dimensions. There is a proper term in the new Lagrangian density, which behaves like a massless spook that surrounds the single soliton solution and opposes any internal changes. In other words, any arbitrary variation in the single soliton solution leads to an increase in the total energy. Moreover, just for the single soliton solution, the general dynamical equations are reduced to those versions of a special type of the standard well-known complex nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems, as its dominant dynamical equations.

Manipulation and exchange of Light with Orbital Angular Momentum in Quantum Dot Molecules

We study the interaction of laser pulses carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) with structural asymmetry quantum dot molecules characterized by four energy levels. We demonstrate how the inter-dot tunneling endows exchange of optical vortices between different frequencies. We consider a case where a weak probe beam has an optical vortex and thus has a zero intensity at the center. The presence of tunneling coupling generates an additional weak laser beam with the same vorticity as that of the incident vortex beam. We analyze conditions for the vortex of the initial beam to be transferred efficiently to the generated beam. The propagation of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams possessing OAM states characterized by both azimuthal and radial indices is then investigated for the case where the strong control beam is also an OAM mode. It is shown that the conservation of OAM states is always satisfied over the OAM exchange process. Yet, an abnormal case is observed in which the radial index induces some intensity patterns of the generated beam which differs from a pure LG beam of incident beams. Analytical solutions are provided to elucidate such effects induced by radial indices on propagation characteristics of OAM beams. When superimposing two initially present weak OAM modes, it is observed that the resulting optical vortices move about the beam axis as the light propagates, forming a sort of "constellation" around the center. The shift in axis of such a composite pulses is due to the effect of inter-dot tunneling which is controlled by an external electric voltage. The optical angular momenta may add a new degree of freedom in the study of solid systems suitable for quantum technologies.

An Energetically Stable Q-ball solution in 3+1 Dimensions

The paper, classically, presents an extended Klein-Gordon field system in 3+1 dimensions with a special Q-ball solution. The Q-ball solution is energetically stable, that is, for any arbitrary small deformation above the background of that, total energy always increases. The general dynamical equations, just for this special Q-ball solution, are reduced to the known versions of a complex nonlinear Klein-Gordon system, as its dominant dynamical equations.

The role of the massless phantom term in the stability of a non-topological soliton solution

We intend to introduce classically a special Lagrangian density in such a way that, firstly, it leads to a special non-topological solitary wave solution, secondly, the stability of that is guaranteed properly, and thirdly, its dominant dynamical equations reduce to the standard nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. For these purposes, we have to consider a new term in the Lagrangian density, whose role is like a massless phantom that surrounds the special solitary wave solution and resists any change in its internal structure.

The Affective Factors on the Uncertainty in the Collisions of the Soliton Solutions of the Double Field sine-Gordon System

Inspired by the well known sine-Gordon equation, we present a symmetric coupled system of two real scalar fields in $1+1$ dimensions. There are three different topological soliton solutions which be labelled according to their topological charges. These solitons can absorb some localized non-dispersive wave packets in collision processes. It will be shown numerically, during collisions between solitons, there will be an uncertainty which originates from the amount of the maximum amplitude and arbitrary initial phases of the trapped wave packets.

Orbital angular momentum transfer via spontaneously generated coherence

We study the orbital angular momentum (OAM) transfer from a weak Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) field to a weak plane-wave in two closed-loop three-level $V$-type atomic systems. In the first scheme, the atomic system has two non-degenerate upper levels which the corresponding transition is excited by a microwave plane-wave. It is analytically shown that the microwave field induces an OAM transfer from an LG field to a generated third field. In the second scheme, we consider a three-level $V$-type atomic system with two near-degenerate excited states and study the effect of the quantum interference due to the spontaneous emission on the OAM transfer. It is found that the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) induces the OAM transfer from the LG field to the weak planar field, while the OAM transfer does not occur in the absence of the SGC. The suggested models prepare a rather simple method for the OAM transfer which can be used in quantum information processing and data storage.

In this paper, we construct the $\mathbb Z_{2}^{n}-$supergrassmannians by gluing of the $\mathbb Z_{2}^{n}-$superdomains and give an explicit description of the action of the $\mathbb Z_{2}^{n}-$super Lie group $GL(\overrightarrow{\textbf{m}})$ on the $\mathbb Z_{2}^{n}-$supergrassmannian $G_{\overrightarrow{\textbf{k}}}(\overrightarrow{\textbf{m}})$ in the functor of points language. In particular, we give a concrete proof of the transitively of this action, and the gluing of the local charts of the supergrassmannian.
