R-harmonious groups

A group is R-harmonious if there exists a permutation $g_1,g_2,\ldots, g_{n-1}$ of the non-identity elements of $G$ such that the consecutive products $g_1g_2$, $g_2g_3$, $\ldots, g_{n-1}g_1$ also form a permutation of the non-identity elements, where $n=|G|$. We investigate R-harmonious groups via cyclic and split extensions. Among our results, we prove that every group of odd-order not divisible by 3 is R-harmonious.

Symmetric sequencings and other combinatorial properties of large groups

We prove that Anderson's conjecture on symmetric sequencings and Bailey's conjecture on 2-sequencings hold for sufficiently large groups. In addition, we discuss extensions of partial harmonious sequences and partial R-sequencings. Several further results on double sequencings are presented, both in the context of abelian groups and for sufficiently large non-abelian groups.

Symmetric harmoniousness of odd-order groups

We prove that every odd-order group is symmetric harmonious: there exists a permutation $g_0,g_1,\ldots, g_{\ell-1}$ of elements of $G$ such that the consecutive products $g_0g_1,g_1g_2,\ldots, g_{\ell-1}g_0$ also form a permutation of elements of $G$ and $g_{\ell-i}=g_i^{-1}$ for all $1\leq i \leq \ell-1$. We apply this result to obtain new examples of R*-sequenceable groups.

Harmonious sequences in groups with a unique involution

We study several combinatorial properties of finite groups that are related to the notions of sequenceability, R-sequenceability, and harmonious sequences. In particular, we show that in every abelian group $G$ with a unique involution $\imath_G$ there exists a permutation $g_0,\ldots, g_{m}$ of elements of $G \backslash \{\imath_G\}$ such that the consecutive sums $g_0+g_1, g_1+g_2,\ldots, g_{m}+g_0$ also form a permutation of elements of $G\backslash \{\imath_G\}$. We also show that in every abelian group of order at least 4 there exists a sequence containing each non-identity element of $G$ exactly twice such that the consecutive sums also contain each non-identity element of $G$ twice. We apply several results to the existence of transversals in Latin squares.

On a Cyclic Inequality Related to Chebyshev Polynomials

We show that any weighted geometric mean of Chebyshev polynomials is bounded from above by another Chebyshev polynomial. We also study a related homogeneous cyclic inequality $$ \left (\sum_{i=1}^n x_i^{(a+b+1)/2} \right )^2 \geq \sum_{i=1}^n x_i \sum_{i=1}^n x_i^a x_{i+1}^b,$$ where $a,b,x_1,\ldots, x_n$ (with $x_{n+1}=x_1$) are nonnegative. In particular, we prove that the inequality holds when $a=b=1$ and $n\leq 8$ for all nonnegative numbers $x_1,\ldots, x_n$.

Doubly Sequenceable Groups

Given a sequence ${\bf g}: g_0,\ldots, g_{m}$, in a finite group $G$ with $g_0=1_G$, let ${\bf \bar g}: \bar g_0,\ldots, \bar g_{m}$, be the sequence defined by $\bar g_0=1_G$ and $\bar g_i=g_{i-1}^{-1}g_i$ for $1\leq i \leq m$. We say that $G$ is doubly sequenceable if there exists a sequence ${\bf g}$ in $G$ such that every element of $G$ appears exactly twice in each of ${\bf g}$ and ${\bf \bar g}$. If a group $G$ is abelian, odd, sequenceable, R-sequenceable, or terraceable, then $G$ is doubly sequenceable. In this paper, we show that if $N$ is an odd or sequenceable group and $H$ is an abelian group, then $N \times H$ is doubly sequenceable.

Permutations with a distinct divisor property

A finite group of order $n$ is said to have the distinct divisor property (DDP) if there exists a permutation $g_1,\ldots, g_n$ of its elements such that $g_i^{-1}g_{i+1} \neq g_j^{-1}g_{j+1}$ for all $1\leq i<j<n$. We show that an abelian group is DDP if and only if it has a unique element of order 2. We also describe a construction of DDP groups via group extensions by abelian groups and show that there exist infinitely many non abelian DDP groups.

Complete Generalized Fibonacci Sequences Modulo Primes

We study generalized Fibonacci sequences $F_{n+1}=PF_n-QF_{n-1}$ with initial values $F_0=0$ and $F_1=1$. Let $P,Q$ be nonzero integers such that $P^2-4Q$ is not a perfect square. We show that if $Q=\pm 1$ then the sequence $\{F_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ misses a congruence class modulo every prime large enough. On the other hand, if $Q \neq \pm 1$, we prove that (under GRH) the sequence $\{F_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ hits every congruence class modulo infinitely many primes.

A note on polynomial sequences modulo integers

We study the uniform distribution of the polynomial sequence $\lambda(P)=(\lfloor P(k) \rfloor )_{k\geq 1}$ modulo integers, where $P(x)$ is a polynomial with real coefficients. In the nonlinear case, we show that $\lambda(P)$ is uniformly distributed in $\mathbb{Z}$ if and only if $P(x)$ has at least one irrational coefficient other than the constant term. In the case of even degree, we prove a stronger result: $\lambda(P)$ intersects every congruence class modulo every integer if and only if $P(x)$ has at least one irrational coefficient other than the constant term.

Dense semigroups of triangular matrices

Let $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$, and $T_n(\mathbb{K})$ be the set of $n\times n$ lower triangular matrices with entries in $\mathbb{K}$. We show that $T_n(\mathbb{K})$ has dense subsemigroups that are generated by $n+1$ matrices.

On the subgroup generated by solutions of Pell's equation

Equivalence classes of solutions of the Diophantine equation $a^2+mb^2=c^2$ form an infinitely generated abelian group $G_m$, where $m$ is a fixed square-free positive integer. Solutions of Pell's equation $x^2-my^2=1$ generate a subgroup $P_m$ of $G_m$. We prove that $P_m$ and $G_m/P_m$ have infinite rank for all $m>1$. We also give several examples of $m$ for which $G_m/P_m$ has nontrivial torsion.

Dense 2-generator subsemigroups of $2\times 2$ matrices

We show that the semigroup of real linear fractional transformations on a proper subinterval of the real line does not admit any 2-generator dense subsemigroups, and then we construct a 3-parameter family of examples of 3-generator dense subsemigroups. We also construct an explicit example of a 2-generator dense subsemigroup of $2\times 2$ real matrices. In the complex case, we prove the existence of uncountably many 2-generator dense subsemigroups.

A Collatz-type conjecture on the set of rational numbers

Define $\theta(x)=(x-1)/3$ if $x\geq 1$, and $\theta(x)=2x/(1-x)$ if $x<1$. We conjecture that the orbit of every positive rational number ends in 0. In particular, there does not exist any positive rational fixed point for a map in the semigroup $\Omega$ generated by the maps $3x+1$ and $x/(x+2)$. In this paper, we prove that the asymptotic density of the set of elements in $\Omega$ that have rational fixed points is zero.

Semigroups of real functions with dense orbits

Let ${\mathcal F}_I=\{f:I \to I| f(x)= (Ax+B)/(Cx+D); AD-BC \neq 0 \}$, where $I$ is an interval. For $x\in I$, let $Ω_x$ be the orbit of $x$ under the action of the semigroup of functions generated by $f,g \in {\mathcal F}_I$. Our main result in this paper is to describe all $f,g \in {\mathcal F}_I$ such that $Ω_x$ is dense in $I$ for all $x$.

Convergence of Ricci flow on $\mathbb{R}^2$ to flat space

We prove that, starting at an initial metric $g(0)=e^{2u_0}(dx^2+dy^2)$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ with bounded scalar curvature and bounded $u_0$, the Ricci flow $\partial_t g(t)=-R_{g(t)}g(t)$ converges to a flat metric on $\mathbb{R}^2$.

On a property of plane curves

Let $γ: [0,1] \to [0,1]^2$ be a continuous curve such that $γ(0)=(0,0)$, $γ(1)=(1,1)$, and $γ(t) \in (0,1)^2$ for all $t\in (0,1)$. We prove that, for each $n \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists a sequence of points $A_i$, $0\leq i \leq n+1$, on $γ$ such that $A_0=(0,0)$, $A_{n+1}=(1,1)$, and the sequences $π_1(\overrightarrow{A_iA_{i+1}})$ and $π_2(\overrightarrow{A_iA_{i+1}})$, $0\leq i \leq n$, are positive and the same up to order, where $π_1,π_2$ are projections on the axes.

Semigroups of matrices with dense orbits

We give examples of $n \times n$ matrices $A$ and $B$ over the filed $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$ such that for almost every column vector $x \in \mathbb{K}^n$, the orbit of $x$ under the action of the semigroup generated by $A$ and $B$ is dense in $\mathbb{K}^n$.
