Universal Scanning GUI Tool for Available and Usable TV White Space (TVWS) Spectrum

In this era of advanced communication technologies, many remote rural and hard-to-reach areas still lack Internet access due to technological, geographical, and economic challenges. The TV white space (TVWS) technology has proven to be effective and feasible in connecting these areas to Internet service in many parts of the world. The TVWS-based systems operate based on geolocation white space databases (WSDB) to protect the primary systems from harmful interference. Thus, there is a critical need to identify the available and usable channels that can be utilized by secondary white space devices (WSDs) in a specific geographic area. In this work, we developed a generalized and flexible graphical user interface (GUI) tool to evaluate the availability and usability of the TVWS channels and their noise levels at each geographic location within the analyzed area. The developed tool has many features and capabilities, such as allowing users to scan the TVWS spectrum for any geographic area in the world and any frequency band in the TVWS spectrum. Moreover, it allows the user to apply widely used terrain-based radio propagation models. It provides the flexibility to import the elevation terrain profile of any region with the desired spatial accuracy and resolution. In addition, various system parameters, including those related to regulation rules, can be modified in the tool. This tool exports to an external dataset file the output data of the available and usable TVWS channels and their noise levels, and it also visualizes these data interactively. Moreover, we develop an RF planning and optimization algorithm in this tool to evaluate the various communication metrics between the TVWS BS and the user equipment (UEs). This tool also provides an RF optimization technique using Ray Tracing to find the best azimuth and elevation orientation for both the BS and the UE antennas.

Design and Development of a Scalable and Energy-Efficient Localization Framework Leveraging LoRa Ranging-Capable Transceivers

Precise and energy-efficient localization is a critical requirement in many Internet of Things (IoT) applications, particularly in large-scale deployments such as asset tagging, agriculture, and smart cities, where long battery life and cost-effectiveness are crucial. The Semtech SX1280 LoRa transceiver presents a promising solution for IoT localization. It combines low cost, low power, and precise ranging capability over distances of up to 1 km. However, the ranging process requires two devices to be simultaneously active, one initiating the ranging request and the other responding to it, which can lead to significant energy expenditure if not properly managed. Despite the transceiver's excellent performance, no existing system-level framework effectively manages sleep-wake coordination and role assignment needed for energy-efficient operation. This paper presents a coordination framework that significantly reduces power consumption while maintaining the inherent precise ranging capability of the chip. The framework schedules short, synchronized wake-up windows between the initiator and the responder, allowing devices to remain in deep sleep for most of their duty cycle. This scheduling strategy minimizes reliance on precise continuous timing and mitigates drift in low-cost oscillators. To validate the framework, we designed and developed custom nodes that are compliant with the framework's protocol. Experimental results show that the proposed approach allows a node to stay in ultra-low power mode and wake periodically to check for instructions. The node can remain in standby mode for up to nine months on a single coin cell battery and can perform ranging operations on demand in near real-time, all while maintaining a localization accuracy within five meters.

Asymptotic Analysis of One-bit Quantized Box-Constrained Precoding in Large-Scale Multi-User Systems

This paper addresses the design of multi-antenna precoding strategies, considering hardware limitations such as low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs), which necessitate the quantization of transmitted signals. The typical approach starts with optimizing a precoder, followed by a quantization step to meet hardware requirements. This study analyzes the performance of a quantization scheme applied to the box-constrained regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoder in the asymptotic regime, where the number of antennas and users grows proportionally. The box constraint, initially designed to cope with low-dynamic range amplifiers, is used here to control quantization noise rather than for amplifier compatibility. A significant challenge in analyzing the quantized precoder is that the input to the quantization operation does not follow a Gaussian distribution, making traditional methods such as Bussgang's decomposition unsuitable. To overcome this, the paper extends the Gordon's inequality and introduces a novel Gaussian Min-Max Theorem to model the distribution of the channel-distorted precoded signal. The analysis derives the tight lower bound for the signal-to-distortion-plus-noise ratio (SDNR) and the bit error rate (BER), showing that optimal tuning of the amplitude constraint improves performance.

Connectivity Analysis of LoRaWAN-Based Non-Terrestrial Networks for Subterranean mMTC

Wireless underground sensor networks (WUSNs) offer significant social and economic benefits by enabling the monitoring of subterranean entities. However, the communication reliability of WUSNs diminishes in harsh environments where terrestrial network infrastructure is either unavailable or unreliable. To address this challenge, we explore the feasibility of integrating buried massive machine-type communication (mMTC) sensors with non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), high-altitude platforms (HAPs), and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, to establish underground-to-NTN connectivity for various large-scale underground monitoring applications. To assess the effectiveness of underground-to-NTN connectivity, we develop a Monte Carlo simulator that incorporates a multi-layer underground attenuation model, the 3GPP empirical path loss model for various NTN platforms, and two LoRaWAN modulation schemes, i.e., LoRa and LoRa-frequency hopping spread spectrum (LR-FHSS). Our results evidence that LoRa SF7 is a strong candidate for short-range UAV communication in rural environments, while LR-FHSS modulation proves to be a promising option for HAP and LEO satellite platforms in massive WUSNs scenarios thanks to its adequate link budget and robustness to the interference. Finally, we demonstrate that the success probability of underground-to-NTN connectivity using LoRa and LR-FHSS is significantly affected by factors such as the monitoring environment, the number of devices, burial depth, and the soil's volumetric water content.

THz/RF Multi-Hop Routing Throughput: Performance, Optimization, and Application

Terahertz (THz) communication offers a promising solution for high-throughput wireless systems. However, the severe path loss of THz signals raises concerns about its effectiveness compared to radio frequency (RF) communication. In this article, we establish the first stochastic geometry (SG)-based analytical framework for routing in THz systems. We develop a stepwise optimization approach to maximize throughput, including power allocation, relay selection, and number of hops design. Analytical expressions for throughput and coverage probability are derived under the SG framework, enabling low complexity and scalable performance evaluation. Numerical results show that the proposed stepwise-optimal routing strategies not only outperform existing SG-based methods but also approach the ideal upper bound. Moreover, we compare the throughput and coverage performance of THz and RF routing and demonstrate the applications of the proposed analytical framework and routing strategies in system parameter design and unmanned aerial vehicle networks.

A Novel Hybrid Optical and STAR IRS System for NTN Communications

This paper proposes a novel non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) system that integrates optical intelligent reflecting surfaces (OIRS) and simultaneous transmitting and reflecting Intelligent reflecting surfaces (STAR-IRS) to address critical challenges in next-generation communication networks. The proposed system model features a signal transmitted from the optical ground station (OGS) to the earth station (ES) via an OIRS mounted horizontally on a high altitude platform (HAP). The ES uses an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay with fixed gain for signal relaying, which is then transmitted through a STAR-IRS vertically installed on a building to facilitate communication with both indoor and outdoor users. The FSO link incorporates (multiple-input multiple-output) MIMO technology, and this paper develops a channel model specifically designed for scenarios where the number of OIRS units exceeds one. For the radio-frequency (RF) link, a novel and highly precise approximation method is introduced, offering superior accuracy compared to traditional approaches based on the central limit theorem (CLT). Closed-form analytical expressions for key performance metrics, including outage probability (OP), ergodic capacity and average bit error rate (BER) are derived in terms of the bivariate Fox-H function for this novel five hops system. Asymptotic expressions at high SNR are also presented, providing insights into system diversity order.

Performance Analysis of SAGIN from the Relay Perspective: A Spherical Stochastic Geometry Approach

In recent years, the satellite-aerial-ground integrated network (SAGIN) has become essential in meeting the increasing demands for global wireless communications. In SAGIN, high-altitude platforms (HAPs) can serve as communication hubs and act as relays to enhance communication performance. In this paper, we evaluate network performance and analyze the role of HAPs in SAGIN from the relay perspective. Based on this unique perspective, we introduce three metrics to evaluate the performance, named the average access data rate, the average backhaul data rate, and the backhaul rate exceedance probability (BREP). Considering the need for dynamic topology and interference analysis, we choose spherical stochastic geometry (SSG) as a tool and derive analytical expressions for the above metrics to achieve low-complexity performance evaluation. Specifically, we provide a closed-form expression for the end-to-end performance metric BREP. Given that there is no existing literature in the SSG field studying networks from a relay perspective, we specifically investigate the impact of satellite network topology on performance in our numerical results to further highlight the advantages of the SSG framework. Additionally, we analyze the minimum HAP transmission power required to maintain both short-term and long-term data rate demands.

UAV-Enabled Wireless-Powered Underground Communication Networks: A Novel Time Allocation Approach

Wireless-powered underground communication networks (WPUCNs), which allow underground devices (UDs) to harvest energy from wireless signals for battery-free communication, offer a promising solution for sustainable underground monitoring. However, the severe wireless signal attenuation in challenging underground environments and the costly acquisition of channel state information (CSI) make large-scale WPUCNs economically infeasible in practice. To address this challenge, we introduce flexible unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into WPUCNs, leading to UAV-enabled WPUCN systems. In this system, a UAV is first charged by a terrestrial hybrid access point (HAP), then flies to the monitoring area to wirelessly charge UDs. Afterwards, the UAV collects data from the UDs and finally returns to the HAP for data offloading. Based on the proposed UAV-enabled WPUCN system, we first propose its energy consumption model and a hybrid wireless energy transfer (WET) approach (i.e., UDs can harvest energy from both the HAP and the UAV) relying on full-CSI and CSI-free multi-antenna beamforming. Then, we formulate and address a time allocation problem to minimize the energy consumption of UAV, while ensuring that the throughput requirements of all UDs are met and all sensor data is offloaded. Through simulations of a realistic farming scenario, we demonstrate that the proposed hybrid WET approach outperforms other WET approaches, with performance gains influenced by the number of antennas, communication distance, number of UDs, and underground conditions. Additionally, under the optimized time allocation, we found that the proposed hybrid WET approach based on a CSI-free multi-antenna scheme achieves the lowest UAV's energy consumption among all WET mechanisms, thereby enabling sustainable underground monitoring in WPUCNs.

Orthogonality Analysis in LoRa Uplink Satellite Communications Affected by Doppler Effect

This paper provides, for the first time, analytical expressions for the Long-Range (LoRa) waveform and cross-correlation in both continuous and discrete time domains under the Doppler effect in satellite communication. We propose the concept and formulas of the shared visibility window for satellites toward two ground devices. Our analysis covers cross-correlation results with varying spreading factors (SF) for no-Doppler and with-Doppler cases. We find the maximum cross-correlation with different SFs and the mean cross-correlation are immune to the Doppler effect. However, the maximum cross-correlation with the same SFs is only immune to high Doppler shift, with its value fluctuating between 0.6 and 1 under high Doppler rate. We interpret this fluctuation by introducing the relationship between transmission start time and cross-correlation. We provide a parameter analysis for orbit height, ground device distance, and inclination angle. Additionally, we analyze the bit error rate (BER) for LoRa signals and observe worse performance under high Doppler shift or interference with same SF. Increasing the SNR or the SIR improves the BER only when Doppler effect is below a frequency threshold. Notably, under Doppler effect, the performance behaviors of BER no longer align with those of maximum cross-correlation. Finally, our results lead to two recommendations: 1) To mitigate Doppler impact on cross-correlation, we recommend utilizing low SFs, high orbit height, short ground device distance, and the transmission start time with high Doppler shift; 2) To mitigate Doppler impact on BER, we recommend employing low SFs, high bandwidth, and transmission start time with high Doppler rate. These conflicting recommendations regarding transmission start time highlight the necessity of Doppler shift compensation techniques to help operate LoRa in space properly.

Fundamental limits via CRB of semi-blind channel estimation in Massive MIMO systems

This paper investigates the asymptotic behavior of the deterministic and stochastic Cramér-Rao Bounds (CRB) for semi-blind channel estimation in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We derive and analyze mathematically tractable expressions for both metrics under various asymptotic regimes, which govern the growth rates of the number of antennas, the number of users, the training sequence length, and the transmission block length. Unlike the existing work, our results show that the CRB can be made arbitrarily small as the transmission block length increases, but only when the training sequence length grows at the same rate and the number of users remains fixed. However, if the number of training sequences remains proportional to the number of users, the channel estimation error is always lower-bounded by a non-vanishing constant. Numerical results are presented to support our findings and demonstrate the advantages of semi-blind channel estimation in reducing the required number of training sequences.

Performance Analysis of Joint Antenna Selection and Precoding Methods in Multi-user Massive MISO

This paper presents a performance analysis of two distinct techniques for antenna selection and precoding in downlink multi-user massive multiple-input single-output systems with limited dynamic range power amplifiers. Both techniques are derived from the original formulation of the regularized-zero forcing precoder, designed as the solution to minimizing a regularized distortion. Based on this, the first technique, called the $\ell_1$-norm precoder, adopts an $\ell_1$-norm regularization term to encourage sparse solutions, thereby enabling antenna selection. The second technique, termed the thresholded $\ell_1$-norm precoder, involves post-processing the precoder solution obtained from the first method by applying an entry-wise thresholding operation. This work conducts a precise performance analysis to compare these two techniques. The analysis leverages the Gaussian min-max theorem which is effective for examining the asymptotic behavior of optimization problems without explicit solutions. While the analysis of the $\ell_1$-norm precoder follows the conventional Gaussian min-max theorem framework, understanding the thresholded $\ell_1$-norm precoder is more complex due to the non-linear behavior introduced by the thresholding operation. To address this complexity, we develop a novel Gaussian min-max theorem tailored to these scenarios. We provide precise asymptotic behavior analysis of the precoders, focusing on metrics such as received signal-to-noise and distortion ratio and bit error rate. Our analysis demonstrates that the thresholded $\ell_1$-norm precoder can offer superior performance when the threshold parameter is carefully selected. Simulations confirm that the asymptotic results are accurate for systems equipped with hundreds of antennas at the base station, serving dozens of user terminals.

Joint Trajectory and Resource Optimization for HAPs-SAR Systems with Energy-Aware Constraints

This paper investigates the joint optimization of trajectory planning and resource allocation for a high-altitude platform stations synthetic aperture radar (HAPs-SAR) system. To support real-time sensing and conserve the limited energy budget of the HAPs, the proposed framework assumes that the acquired radar data are transmitted in real time to a ground base station for SAR image reconstruction. A dynamic trajectory model is developed, and the power consumption associated with radar sensing, data transmission, and circular flight is comprehensively analyzed. In addition, solar energy harvesting is considered to enhance system sustainability. An energy-aware mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem is formulated to maximize radar beam coverage while satisfying operational constraints. To solve this challenging problem, a sub-optimal successive convex approximation (SCA)-based framework is proposed, incorporating iterative optimization and finite search. Simulation results validate the convergence of the proposed algorithm and demonstrate its effectiveness in balancing SAR performance, communication reliability, and energy efficiency. A final SAR imaging simulation on a 9-target lattice scenario further confirms the practical feasibility of the proposed solution.

Joint Beamforming with Extremely Large Scale RIS: A Sequential Multi-Agent A2C Approach

It is a challenging problem to jointly optimize the base station (BS) precoding matrix and the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) phases simultaneously in a RIS-assisted multiple-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) scenario when the size of the RIS becomes extremely large. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning algorithm called sequential multi-agent advantage actor-critic (A2C) to solve this problem. In addition, the discrete phase of RISs, imperfect channel state information (CSI), and channel correlations between users are taken into consideration. The computational complexity is also analyzed, and the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the zero-forcing (ZF) beamformer in terms of the sum spectral efficiency (SE). It is noted that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is lower than the benchmark, while the performance is better than the benchmark. Throughout simulations, it is also found that the proposed algorithm is robust to medium channel estimation error.

Aerial Relay to Achieve Covertness and Security

In this work, a delay-tolerant unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) relayed covert and secure communication framework is investigated. In this framework, a legitimate UAV serves as an aerial relay to realize communication when the direct link between the terrestrial transmitter and receiver is blocked and also acts as a friendly jammer to suppress the malicious nodes presented on the ground. Subsequently, considering the uncertainty of malicious nodes' positions, a robust fractional programming optimization problem is built to maximize energy efficiency by jointly optimizing the trajectory of the UAV, the transmit power of the transmitter, and the time-switching factor. For the extremely complicated covert constraint, Pinsker's inequality, Jensen's inequality, and the bisection search method are employed to construct a tractable shrunken one. After this, an alternate optimization-based algorithm is proposed to solve the fractional programming optimization problem. To achieve low complexity, we design the primal-dual search-based algorithm and the successive convex approximation-based algorithm, respectively, for each sub-problem. Numerical results show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

High Altitude Platform-Based Caching and Multicasting for Rural Connectivity

Providing efficient and reliable content delivery in rural areas remains a significant challenge due to the lack of communication infrastructure. To bridge the digital divide, this paper investigates the potential of leveraging multiple high-altitude platforms (HAPs) for energy-efficient content delivery in wide rural regions. Each caching-enabled HAP is equipped with both Free-Space Optical (FSO) transceivers for backhaul links and Radio Frequency (RF) antenna arrays for access links. To further enhance network efficiency, we consider a network coding-based multicasting scheme, where different types of content are treated as distinct multicast sessions. With the objective of minimizing long-term power cost, we propose a hierarchical framework that integrates deep reinforcement learn-ing (DRL) and convex optimization to jointly optimize dynamic caching strategies and resource allocation across the network. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces power cost compared to several baseline approaches, providing a practical solution for improving rural connectivity.

Extended Road-Aware Line-of-Sight Probability Model for Urban Air Mobility

As urban air mobility (UAM) emerges as a transformative solution to urban transportation, the demand for robust communication frameworks capable of supporting high-density aerial traffic becomes increasingly critical. An essential area of communications improvement is reliably characterizing and minimizing interference on UAM aircraft from other aircraft and ground vehicles. To achieve this, accurate line-of-sight (LOS) models must be used. In this work, we highlight the limitations of a LOS probability model extensively used in the literature in accurately predicting interference caused by ground vehicles. Then, we introduce a modified probability of LOS model that improves interference prediction by incorporating the urban topography and the dynamic positioning of ground vehicles on streets. Our model's parameters are derived from extensive simulations and validated through real-world urban settings to ensure reliability and applicability.

TinyML NLP Scheme for Semantic Wireless Sentiment Classification with Privacy Preservation

Natural Language Processing (NLP) operations, such as semantic sentiment analysis and text synthesis, often raise privacy concerns and demand significant on-device computational resources. Centralized learning (CL) on the edge provides an energy-efficient alternative but requires collecting raw data, compromising user privacy. While federated learning (FL) enhances privacy, it imposes high computational energy demands on resource-constrained devices. This study provides insights into deploying privacy-preserving, energy-efficient NLP models on edge devices. We introduce semantic split learning (SL) as an energy-efficient, privacy-preserving tiny machine learning (TinyML) framework and compare it to FL and CL in the presence of Rayleigh fading and additive noise. Our results show that SL significantly reduces computational power and CO2 emissions while enhancing privacy, as evidenced by a fourfold increase in reconstruction error compared to FL and nearly eighteen times that of CL. In contrast, FL offers a balanced trade-off between privacy and efficiency. Our code is available for replication at our GitHub repository: https://github.com/AhmedRadwan02/TinyEco2AI-NLP.
