Control of pedestal-top electron density using RMP and gas puff at KSTAR

We report the experimental results of controlling the pedestal-top electron density by applying resonant magnetic perturbation with the in-vessel control coils and the main gas puff in the 2024-2025 KSTAR experimental campaign. The density is reconstructed using a parametrized psi_N grid and the five channels of the line-averaged density measured by a two-colored interferometer. The reconstruction procedure is accelerated by deploying a multi-layer perceptron to run in about 120 microseconds and is fast enough for real-time control. A proportional-integration controller is adopted, with the controller gains being estimated from the system identification processes. The experimental results show that the developed controller can follow a dynamic target while exclusively using both actuators. The absolute percentage errors between the electron density at psi_N=0.89 and the target are approximately 1.5% median and a 2.5% average value. The developed controller can even lower the density by using the pump-out mechanism under RMP, and it can follow a more dynamic target than a single actuator controller. The developed controller will enable experimental scenario exploration within a shot by dynamically setting the density target or maintaining a constant electron density within a discharge.

TorbeamNN: Machine learning based steering of ECH mirrors on KSTAR

We have developed TorbeamNN: a machine learning surrogate model for the TORBEAM ray tracing code to predict electron cyclotron heating and current drive locations in tokamak plasmas. TorbeamNN provides more than a 100 times speed-up compared to the highly optimized and simplified real-time implementation of TORBEAM without any reduction in accuracy compared to the offline, full fidelity TORBEAM code. The model was trained using KSTAR electron cyclotron heating (ECH) mirror geometries and works for both O-mode and X-mode absorption. The TorbeamNN predictions have been validated both offline and real-time in experiment. TorbeamNN has been utilized to track an ECH absorption vertical position target in dynamic KSTAR plasmas as well as under varying toroidal mirror angles and with a minimal average tracking error of 0.5cm.

Illusion Worlds: Deceptive UI Attacks in Social VR

Social Virtual Reality (VR) platforms have surged in popularity, yet their security risks remain underexplored. This paper presents four novel UI attacks that covertly manipulate users into performing harmful actions through deceptive virtual content. Implemented on VRChat and validated in an IRB-approved study with 30 participants, these attacks demonstrate how deceptive elements can mislead users into malicious actions without their awareness. To address these vulnerabilities, we propose MetaScanner, a proactive countermeasure that rapidly analyzes objects and scripts in virtual worlds, detecting suspicious elements within seconds.

Physics-Informed Neural Networks for Optimal Vaccination Plan in SIR Epidemic Models

This work focuses on understanding the minimum eradication time for the controlled Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered (SIR) model in the time-homogeneous setting, where the infection and recovery rates are constant. The eradication time is defined as the earliest time the infectious population drops below a given threshold and remains below it. For time-homogeneous models, the eradication time is well-defined due to the predictable dynamics of the infectious population, and optimal control strategies can be systematically studied. We utilize Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to solve the partial differential equation (PDE) governing the eradication time and derive the corresponding optimal vaccination control. The PINN framework enables a mesh-free solution to the PDE by embedding the dynamics directly into the loss function of a deep neural network. We use a variable scaling method to ensure stable training of PINN and mathematically analyze that this method is effective in our setting. This approach provides an efficient computational alternative to traditional numerical methods, allowing for an approximation of the eradication time and the optimal control strategy. Through numerical experiments, we validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in computing the minimum eradication time and achieving optimal control. This work offers a novel application of PINNs to epidemic modeling, bridging mathematical theory and computational practice for time-homogeneous SIR models.

Fixed-Frequency Reconfigurable Leaky-Wave Antennas with Simplified Biasing

This work introduces a reconfigurable leaky-waveguide antenna with a simplified biasing scheme for dynamic beam steering at a fixed frequency. Unlike prior metasurface-aided leaky-waveguide antennas that employ tunable metasurfaces as radiative apertures, our approach utilizes them as a waveguide wall solely to control the guided mode. As a result, the proposed structure eliminates the need for local biasing schemes commonly required in earlier designs, significantly simplifying the biasing process. The radiation is achieved by employing passive, angle-independent metasurfaces that allow beam steering across broadside. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed design are validated through full-wave simulations.

Hidden dormant phase mediating the glass transition in disordered matter

Metallic glass is a frozen liquid with structural disorder that retains degenerate free energy without spontaneous symmetry breaking to become a solid. For over half a century, this puzzling structure has raised fundamental questions about how structural disorder impacts glass-liquid phase transition kinetics, which remain elusive without direct evidence. In this study, through single-pulse, time-resolved imaging using X-ray free-electron lasers, we visualized the glass-to-liquid transition, revealing a previously hidden dormant phase that does not involve any macroscopic volume change within the crossover regime between the two phases. Although macroscopically inactive, nanoscale redistribution occurs, forming channeld low-density bands within this dormant phase that drives the glass transition. By providing direct microscopic evidence, this work presents a new perspective on the phase transition process in disordered materials, which can be extended to various liquid and solid phases in other complex systems.

Measurement-based Characterization of ISAC Channels with Distributed Beamforming at Dual mmWave Bands and with Human Body Scattering and Blockage

In this paper, we introduce our millimeter-wave (mmWave) radio channel measurement for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) scenarios with distributed links at dual bands in an indoor cavity; we also characterize the channel in delay and azimuth-angular domains for the scenarios with the presence of 1 person with varying locations and facing orientations. In our setting of distributed links with two transmitters and two receivers where each transceiver operates at two bands, we can measure two links whose each transmitter faces to one receiver and thus capable of line-of-sight (LOS) communication; these two links have crossing Fresnel zones. We have another two links capable of capturing the reflectivity from the target presenting in the test area (as well as the background). The numerical results in this paper focus on analyzing the channel with the presence of one person. It is evident that not only the human location, but also the human facing orientation, shall be taken into account when modeling the ISAC channel.

Site-Specific Radio Channel Representation for 5G and 6G

A site-specific radio channel representation (SSCR) takes the surroundings of the communication system into account by considering the environment geometry, including buildings, vegetation, and mobile objects with their material and surface properties. We present methods for an SSCR that is spatially consistent, such that mobile transmitter and receiver cause a correlated time-varying channel impulse response and closely spaced antennas are correctly correlated. An SSCR is composed of a dynamically varying number of multipath components solely defined by the environment geometry and the material of the environmental objects. Hence, the environment geometry is the only natural scenario parameterization and specific calibration procedures shall be avoided. 5G and 6G physical layer technologies are increasingly able to exploit the properties of a wide range of environments from dense urban areas to railways, road transportation, industrial automation, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The channel impulse response in this wide range of scenarios has generally non-stationary statistical properties, i.e., the Doppler spectrum, power delay profile, K-factor and spatial correlation are all spatially variant (or time-variant for mobile receivers). SSCRs will enable research and development of emerging 5G and 6G technologies such as distributed multiple-input multiple-output systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, multi-band communication, and joint communication and sensing. We highlight the state of the art and summarize research directions for future work towards an SSCR.

Aligning Large Language Models via Fine-grained Supervision

Pre-trained large-scale language models (LLMs) excel at producing coherent articles, yet their outputs may be untruthful, toxic, or fail to align with user expectations. Current approaches focus on using reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF) to improve model alignment, which works by transforming coarse human preferences of LLM outputs into a feedback signal that guides the model learning process. However, because this approach operates on sequence-level feedback, it lacks the precision to identify the exact parts of the output affecting user preferences. To address this gap, we propose a method to enhance LLM alignment through fine-grained token-level supervision. Specifically, we ask annotators to minimally edit less preferred responses within the standard reward modeling dataset to make them more favorable, ensuring changes are made only where necessary while retaining most of the original content. The refined dataset is used to train a token-level reward model, which is then used for training our fine-grained Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) model. Our experiment results demonstrate that this approach can achieve up to an absolute improvement of $5.1\%$ in LLM performance, in terms of win rate against the reference model, compared with the traditional PPO model.

Acceleration of Grokking in Learning Arithmetic Operations via Kolmogorov-Arnold Representation

We propose novel methodologies aimed at accelerating the grokking phenomenon, which refers to the rapid increment of test accuracy after a long period of overfitting as reported in~\cite{power2022grokking}. Focusing on the grokking phenomenon that arises in learning arithmetic binary operations via the transformer model, we begin with a discussion on data augmentation in the case of commutative binary operations. To further accelerate, we elucidate arithmetic operations through the lens of the Kolmogorov-Arnold (KA) representation theorem, revealing its correspondence to the transformer architecture: embedding, decoder block, and classifier. Observing the shared structure between KA representations associated with binary operations, we suggest various transfer learning mechanisms that expedite grokking. This interpretation is substantiated through a series of rigorous experiments. In addition, our approach is successful in learning two nonstandard arithmetic tasks: composition of operations and a system of equations. Furthermore, we reveal that the model is capable of learning arithmetic operations using a limited number of tokens under embedding transfer, which is supported by a set of experiments as well.

Using magnetic dynamics to measure the spin gap in a candidate Kitaev material

Materials potentially hosting Kitaev spin-liquid states are considered crucial for realizing topological quantum computing. However, the intricate nature of spin interactions within these materials complicates the precise measurement of low-energy spin excitations indicative of fractionalized excitations. Using Na$_{2}$Co$_2$TeO$_{6}$ as an example, we study these low-energy spin excitations using the time-resolved resonant elastic x-ray scattering (tr-REXS). Our observations unveil remarkably slow spin dynamics at the magnetic peak, whose recovery timescale is several nanoseconds. This timescale aligns with the extrapolated spin gap of $\sim$ 1 $μ$eV, obtained by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations in the thermodynamic limit. The consistency demonstrates the efficacy of tr-REXS in discerning low-energy spin gaps inaccessible to conventional spectroscopic techniques.

RepAugment: Input-Agnostic Representation-Level Augmentation for Respiratory Sound Classification

Recent advancements in AI have democratized its deployment as a healthcare assistant. While pretrained models from large-scale visual and audio datasets have demonstrably generalized to this task, surprisingly, no studies have explored pretrained speech models, which, as human-originated sounds, intuitively would share closer resemblance to lung sounds. This paper explores the efficacy of pretrained speech models for respiratory sound classification. We find that there is a characterization gap between speech and lung sound samples, and to bridge this gap, data augmentation is essential. However, the most widely used augmentation technique for audio and speech, SpecAugment, requires 2-dimensional spectrogram format and cannot be applied to models pretrained on speech waveforms. To address this, we propose RepAugment, an input-agnostic representation-level augmentation technique that outperforms SpecAugment, but is also suitable for respiratory sound classification with waveform pretrained models. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms the SpecAugment, demonstrating a substantial improvement in the accuracy of minority disease classes, reaching up to 7.14%.

The Sound Demixing Challenge 2023 $\unicode{x2013}$ Music Demixing Track

This paper summarizes the music demixing (MDX) track of the Sound Demixing Challenge (SDX'23). We provide a summary of the challenge setup and introduce the task of robust music source separation (MSS), i.e., training MSS models in the presence of errors in the training data. We propose a formalization of the errors that can occur in the design of a training dataset for MSS systems and introduce two new datasets that simulate such errors: SDXDB23_LabelNoise and SDXDB23_Bleeding. We describe the methods that achieved the highest scores in the competition. Moreover, we present a direct comparison with the previous edition of the challenge (the Music Demixing Challenge 2021): the best performing system achieved an improvement of over 1.6dB in signal-to-distortion ratio over the winner of the previous competition, when evaluated on MDXDB21. Besides relying on the signal-to-distortion ratio as objective metric, we also performed a listening test with renowned producers and musicians to study the perceptual quality of the systems and report here the results. Finally, we provide our insights into the organization of the competition and our prospects for future editions.

Korean Bio-Medical Corpus (KBMC) for Medical Named Entity Recognition

Named Entity Recognition (NER) plays a pivotal role in medical Natural Language Processing (NLP). Yet, there has not been an open-source medical NER dataset specifically for the Korean language. To address this, we utilized ChatGPT to assist in constructing the KBMC (Korean Bio-Medical Corpus), which we are now presenting to the public. With the KBMC dataset, we noticed an impressive 20% increase in medical NER performance compared to models trained on general Korean NER datasets. This research underscores the significant benefits and importance of using specialized tools and datasets, like ChatGPT, to enhance language processing in specialized fields such as healthcare.

NR-Surface: NextG-ready $μ$W-reconfigurable mmWave Metasurface

Metasurface has recently emerged as an economic solution to expand mmWave coverage. However, their pervasive deployment remains a challenge, mainly due to the difficulty in reaching the tight 260ns NR synchronization requirement and real-time wireless reconfiguration while maintaining multi-year battery life. This paper presents NR-Surface, the first real-time reconfigurable metasurface fully compliant with the NR standard, operating at 242.7 $μ$W for a 2.1-year lifetime on an AA battery. NR-Surface incorporates (i) a new extremely low-power (14KHz sampling) reconfiguration interface, NarrowBand Packet Unit (NBPU), for synchronization and real-time reconfiguration, and (ii) a highly responsive and low-leakage metasurface designed for low-duty cycled operation, by carefully leveraging the structure and the periodicity of the NR beam management procedure in the NR standard. NR-Surface is prototyped and evaluated end-to-end with NR BS built on srsRAN to demonstrate diverse usage scenarios including multiple NR-Surface per BS, multiple UE per NR-Surface, and 3D beamforming. Around-the-corner UE evaluations showcase NR-Surface efficacy under different user mobility patterns (20.3dB gain) and dynamic blockage (22.2dB gain).

Narrowband THz Emission from a Plasma Oscillator Imbedded in a Plasma Density Gradient

A novel method is presented for generating radiation using the beat wave associated with a bi-frequency laser pulse, to excite plasma oscillations in a plasma slab with a density gradient. By resonantly exciting a plasma wave, it can be localised and transformed into a plasma oscillator that produces a beam of radially polarised terahertz radiation. Particle-in-cell simulations and analytic theory are used to demonstrate its main characteristics, which includes narrow bandwidth. The radiator should have useful applications such as terahertz-band particle accelerators and pump-probe experiments.

CARBD-Ko: A Contextually Annotated Review Benchmark Dataset for Aspect-Level Sentiment Classification in Korean

This paper explores the challenges posed by aspect-based sentiment classification (ABSC) within pretrained language models (PLMs), with a particular focus on contextualization and hallucination issues. In order to tackle these challenges, we introduce CARBD-Ko (a Contextually Annotated Review Benchmark Dataset for Aspect-Based Sentiment Classification in Korean), a benchmark dataset that incorporates aspects and dual-tagged polarities to distinguish between aspect-specific and aspect-agnostic sentiment classification. The dataset consists of sentences annotated with specific aspects, aspect polarity, aspect-agnostic polarity, and the intensity of aspects. To address the issue of dual-tagged aspect polarities, we propose a novel approach employing a Siamese Network. Our experimental findings highlight the inherent difficulties in accurately predicting dual-polarities and underscore the significance of contextualized sentiment analysis models. The CARBD-Ko dataset serves as a valuable resource for future research endeavors in aspect-level sentiment classification.

Toward Robustness in Multi-label Classification: A Data Augmentation Strategy against Imbalance and Noise

Multi-label classification poses challenges due to imbalanced and noisy labels in training data. We propose a unified data augmentation method, named BalanceMix, to address these challenges. Our approach includes two samplers for imbalanced labels, generating minority-augmented instances with high diversity. It also refines multi-labels at the label-wise granularity, categorizing noisy labels as clean, re-labeled, or ambiguous for robust optimization. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that BalanceMix outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. We release the code at https://github.com/DISL-Lab/BalanceMix.
