Modulation instability and frequency-comb generation in hybrid quadratic-cubic resonators with spectral filtering

We present an analytical and numerical investigation into the phenomenon of filter-induced modulation instability in passive hybrid optical resonators exhibiting quadratic and cubic nonlinearity. We show that asymmetric spectral losses, with respect to the continuous-wave solution frequency, can trigger sideband amplification in the normal dispersion regime. We calculate the parametric gain and demonstrate the associated pattern formation process. We furthermore show how this parametric process can be exploited to generate optical frequency combs with tunable repetition rate.

A programmable $k\cdot p$ Hamiltonian method and application to magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

In the band theory, first-principles calculations, the tight-binding method and the effective $k\cdot p$ model are usually employed to investigate the electronic structure of condensed matters. The effective $k\cdot p$ model has a compact form with a clear physical picture, and first-principles calculations can give more accurate results. Nowadays, it has been widely recognized to combine the $k\cdot p$ model and first-principles calculations to explore topological materials. However, the traditional method to derive the $k\cdot p$ Hamiltonian is complicated and time-consuming by hand. In this work, we independently develop a programmable algorithm to construct effective $k\cdot p$ Hamiltonians. Symmetries and orbitals are used as the input information to produce the one-/two-/three-dimension $k\cdot p$ Hamiltonian in our method, and the open-source code can be directly downloaded online. At last, we also demonstrate the application to MnBi$_2$Te$_4$-family magnetic topological materials.

Dynamical axion state with hidden pseudospin Chern numbers in MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$-based heterostructures

Axion is a hypothetical elementary particle which was initially postulated to solve the charge conjugation-parity problem in particle physics. Interestingly, the axion state has emerged in effective theory of topological insulators and has attracted extensive attention in condensed matter physics. Time-reversal or inversion symmetry constrains the axion field $\theta$ to be quantized. When both the time-reversal and inversion symmetries are broken by, say, an antiferromagnetic order, the axion field $\theta$ could become unquantized and dynamical along with magnetic fluctuations, which is termed the dynamical axion field. Here, we reveal that a wide class of topological-insulator-based dynamical axion states could be distinguished from the normal-insulator-based ones by a hidden quantity derived from the pseudospin Chern number. Motivated by recent research on MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$-family materials, we further show that such topological-insulator-based dynamical axion states can be hopefully achieved in MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$-based heterostructures, which should greatly facilitate the study of axion electrodynamics in condensed matter physics.

Large dynamical axion field in topological antiferromagnetic insulator Mn$_2$Bi$_2$Te$_5$

The dynamical axion field is a new state of quantum matter where the magnetoelectric response couples strongly to its low-energy magnetic fluctuations. It is fundamentally different from an axion insulator with a static quantized magnetoelectric response. The dynamical axion field exhibits many exotic phenomena such as axionic polariton and axion instability. However, these effects have not been experimentally confirmed due to the lack of proper topological magnetic materials. Here by combining analytic models and first-principles calculations, we predict a series of van der Waal layered Mn$_2$Bi$_2$Te$_5$-related topological antiferromagnetic materials could host the long-sought dynamical axion field with a topological origin. We also show a large dynamical axion field can be achieved in antiferromagnetic insulating states close to the topological phase transition. We further propose the optical and transport experiments to detect such a dynamical axion field. Our results could directly aid and facilitate the search for topological-origin large dynamical axion field in realistic materials.

Topological axion states in magnetic insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ with the quantized magnetoelectric effect

Topological states of quantum matter have attracted great attention in condensed matter physics and materials science. The study of time-reversal-invariant (TRI) topological states in quantum materials has made tremendous progress in both theories and experiments. As a great success, thousands of TRI topological materials are predicted through sweeping search. Richer exotic phenomena are expected to appear in magnetic topological materials because of varied magnetic configurations, but this study falls much behind due to the complex magnetic structures and transitions. Here, we predict the tetradymite-type compound MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and its related materials host interesting magnetic topological states. The magnetic ground state of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is an antiferromagnetic phase which leads to an antiferromagetic topological insulator state with a large topologically non-trivial energy gap ($\sim$0.2~eV). It is the parent state for the axion state, which has gapped bulk and surface states, and quantized topological magnetoelectric effect. The ferromagnetic phase of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ leads to an ideal minimal type-II Weyl semimetal with two Weyl points accompanied by one hole-type and one electron-type Fermi pocket at the Fermi level, which has never been discovered elsewhere. We further present a simple and unified continuum model to capture the salient topological features of this kind of materials.
