Qwen3 Embedding: Advancing Text Embedding and Reranking Through Foundation Models

In this work, we introduce the Qwen3 Embedding series, a significant advancement over its predecessor, the GTE-Qwen series, in text embedding and reranking capabilities, built upon the Qwen3 foundation models. Leveraging the Qwen3 LLMs' robust capabilities in multilingual text understanding and generation, our innovative multi-stage training pipeline combines large-scale unsupervised pre-training with supervised fine-tuning on high-quality datasets. Effective model merging strategies further ensure the robustness and adaptability of the Qwen3 Embedding series. During the training process, the Qwen3 LLMs serve not only as backbone models but also play a crucial role in synthesizing high-quality, rich, and diverse training data across multiple domains and languages, thus enhancing the training pipeline. The Qwen3 Embedding series offers a spectrum of model sizes (0.6B, 4B, 8B) for both embedding and reranking tasks, addressing diverse deployment scenarios where users can optimize for either efficiency or effectiveness. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that the Qwen3 Embedding series achieves state-of-the-art results across diverse benchmarks. Notably, it excels on the multilingual evaluation benchmark MTEB for text embedding, as well as in various retrieval tasks, including code retrieval, cross-lingual retrieval and multilingual retrieval. To facilitate reproducibility and promote community-driven research and development, the Qwen3 Embedding models are publicly available under the Apache 2.0 license.

GME: Improving Universal Multimodal Retrieval by Multimodal LLMs

Universal Multimodal Retrieval (UMR) aims to enable search across various modalities using a unified model, where queries and candidates can consist of pure text, images, or a combination of both. Previous work has attempted to adopt multimodal large language models (MLLMs) to realize UMR using only text data. However, our preliminary experiments demonstrate that more diverse multimodal training data can further unlock the potential of MLLMs. Despite its effectiveness, the existing multimodal training data is highly imbalanced in terms of modality, which motivates us to develop a training data synthesis pipeline and construct a large-scale, high-quality fused-modal training dataset. Based on the synthetic training data, we develop the General Multimodal Embedder (GME), an MLLM-based dense retriever designed for UMR. Furthermore, we construct a comprehensive UMR Benchmark (UMRB) to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach. Experimental results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance among existing UMR methods. Last, we provide in-depth analyses of model scaling and training strategies, and perform ablation studies on both the model and synthetic data.

Learning Complex Heterogeneous Multimodal Fake News via Social Latent Network Inference

With the diversification of online social platforms, news dissemination has become increasingly complex, heterogeneous, and multimodal, making the fake news detection task more challenging and crucial. Previous works mainly focus on obtaining social relationships of news via retweets, limiting the accurate detection when real cascades are inaccessible. Given the proven assessment of the spreading influence of events, this paper proposes a method called HML (Complex Heterogeneous Multimodal Fake News Detection method via Latent Network Inference). Specifically, an improved social latent network inference strategy is designed to estimate the maximum likelihood of news influences under the same event. Meanwhile, a novel heterogeneous graph is built based on social attributes for multimodal news under different events. Further, to better aggregate the relationships among heterogeneous multimodal features, this paper proposes a self-supervised-based multimodal content learning strategy, to enhance, align, fuse and compare heterogeneous modal contents. Based above, a personalized heterogeneous graph representation learning is designed to classify fake news. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the SOTA in real social media news datasets.

A hybrid framework for effective and efficient machine unlearning

Recently machine unlearning (MU) is proposed to remove the imprints of revoked samples from the already trained model parameters, to solve users' privacy concern. Different from the runtime expensive retraining from scratch, there exist two research lines, exact MU and approximate MU with different favorites in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, we present a novel hybrid strategy on top of them to achieve an overall success. It implements the unlearning operation with an acceptable computation cost, while simultaneously improving the accuracy as much as possible. Specifically, it runs reasonable unlearning techniques by estimating the retraining workloads caused by revocations. If the workload is lightweight, it performs retraining to derive the model parameters consistent with the accurate ones retrained from scratch. Otherwise, it outputs the unlearned model by directly modifying the current parameters, for better efficiency. In particular, to improve the accuracy in the latter case, we propose an optimized version to amend the output model with lightweight runtime penalty. We particularly study the boundary of two approaches in our frameworks to adaptively make the smart selection. Extensive experiments on real datasets validate that our proposals can improve the unlearning efficiency by 1.5$\times$ to 8$\times$ while achieving comparable accuracy.

Improving General Text Embedding Model: Tackling Task Conflict and Data Imbalance through Model Merging

Text embeddings are vital for tasks such as text retrieval and semantic textual similarity (STS). Recently, the advent of pretrained language models, along with unified benchmarks like the Massive Text Embedding Benchmark (MTEB), has facilitated the development of versatile general-purpose text embedding models. Advanced embedding models are typically developed using large-scale multi-task data and joint training across multiple tasks. However, our experimental analysis reveals two significant drawbacks of joint training: 1) Task Conflict: Gradients from different tasks interfere with each other, leading to negative transfer. 2) Data Imbalance: Disproportionate data distribution introduces biases that negatively impact performance across tasks. To overcome these challenges, we explore model merging-a technique that combines independently trained models to mitigate gradient conflicts and balance data distribution. We introduce a novel method, Self Positioning, which efficiently searches for optimal model combinations within the interpolation space of task vectors using stochastic gradient descent. Our experiments demonstrate that Self Positioning significantly enhances multi-task performance on the MTEB dataset, achieving an absolute improvement of 0.7 points. It outperforms traditional resampling methods while reducing computational costs. This work offers a robust approach to building generalized text embedding models with superior performance across diverse embedding-related tasks.

Towards Better Understanding of Contrastive Sentence Representation Learning: A Unified Paradigm for Gradient

Sentence Representation Learning (SRL) is a crucial task in Natural Language Processing (NLP), where contrastive Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) is currently a mainstream approach. However, the reasons behind its remarkable effectiveness remain unclear. Specifically, many studies have investigated the similarities between contrastive and non-contrastive SSL from a theoretical perspective. Such similarities can be verified in classification tasks, where the two approaches achieve comparable performance. But in ranking tasks (i.e., Semantic Textual Similarity (STS) in SRL), contrastive SSL significantly outperforms non-contrastive SSL. Therefore, two questions arise: First, *what commonalities enable various contrastive losses to achieve superior performance in STS?* Second, *how can we make non-contrastive SSL also effective in STS?* To address these questions, we start from the perspective of gradients and discover that four effective contrastive losses can be integrated into a unified paradigm, which depends on three components: the **Gradient Dissipation**, the **Weight**, and the **Ratio**. Then, we conduct an in-depth analysis of the roles these components play in optimization and experimentally demonstrate their significance for model performance. Finally, by adjusting these components, we enable non-contrastive SSL to achieve outstanding performance in STS.

Narrowing the Gap between Supervised and Unsupervised Sentence Representation Learning with Large Language Model

Sentence Representation Learning (SRL) is a fundamental task in Natural Language Processing (NLP), with the Contrastive Learning of Sentence Embeddings (CSE) being the mainstream technique due to its superior performance. An intriguing phenomenon in CSE is the significant performance gap between supervised and unsupervised methods, with their only difference lying in the training data. Previous works attribute this performance gap to differences in two representation properties (alignment and uniformity). However, since alignment and uniformity only measure the results, they fail to answer "What aspects of the training data contribute to the performance gap?" and "How can the performance gap be narrowed?", In this paper, we conduct empirical experiments to answer these "What" and "How" questions. We first answer the "What" question by thoroughly comparing the behavior of supervised and unsupervised CSE during their respective training processes. From the comparison, we identify the similarity pattern as a key factor to the performance gap, and introduce a metric, called Relative Fitting Difficulty (RFD), to measure the complexity of the similarity pattern. Then, based on the insights gained from the "What" question, we tackle the "How" question by increasing the pattern complexity of the training data. We achieve this by leveraging the In-Context Learning (ICL) capability of the Large Language Model (LLM) to generate data that simulates complex patterns. By utilizing the hierarchical patterns in the LLM-generated data, we effectively narrow the gap between supervised and unsupervised CSE. We release our codes and appendix at https://github.com/BDBC-KG-NLP/NGCSE.

Emergent Incident Response for Unmanned Warehouses with Multi-agent Systems*

Unmanned warehouses are an important part of logistics, and improving their operational efficiency can effectively enhance service efficiency. However, due to the complexity of unmanned warehouse systems and their susceptibility to errors, incidents may occur during their operation, most often in inbound and outbound operations, which can decrease operational efficiency. Hence it is crucial to to improve the response to such incidents. This paper proposes a collaborative optimization algorithm for emergent incident response based on Safe-MADDPG. To meet safety requirements during emergent incident response, we investigated the intrinsic hidden relationships between various factors. By obtaining constraint information of agents during the emergent incident response process and of the dynamic environment of unmanned warehouses on agents, the algorithm reduces safety risks and avoids the occurrence of chain accidents; this enables an unmanned system to complete emergent incident response tasks and achieve its optimization objectives: (1) minimizing the losses caused by emergent incidents; and (2) maximizing the operational efficiency of inbound and outbound operations during the response process. A series of experiments conducted in a simulated unmanned warehouse scenario demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Efficient real-time spin readout of nitrogen-vacancy centers based on Bayesian estimation

In this work, to improve the spin readout efficiency of the nitrogen vacancy (NV) center, a real-time Bayesian estimation algorithm is proposed, which combines both the prior probability distribution and the fluorescence likelihood function established by the implementation of the NV center dynamics model. The theoretical surpass of the Cramer-Rao lower bound of the readout variance and the improvement of the readout efficiency in the simulation indicate that our approach is an appealing alternative to the conventional photon summation method. The Bayesian real-time estimation readout was experimentally realized by combining a high-performance acquisition and processing hardware, and the Rabi oscillation experiments divulged that the signal-to-noise ratio of our approach was improved by 28.6%. Therefore, it is anticipated that the employed Bayesian estimation readout will effectively present superior sensing capabilities of the NV ensemble, and foster the further development of compact and scalable quantum sensors and consequently novel quantum information processing devices on a monolithic platform.

Dynamic Scene Deblurring Based on Continuous Cross-Layer Attention Transmission

The deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) using attention mechanism have achieved great success for dynamic scene deblurring. In most of these networks, only the features refined by the attention maps can be passed to the next layer and the attention maps of different layers are separated from each other, which does not make full use of the attention information from different layers in the CNN. To address this problem, we introduce a new continuous cross-layer attention transmission (CCLAT) mechanism that can exploit hierarchical attention information from all the convolutional layers. Based on the CCLAT mechanism, we use a very simple attention module to construct a novel residual dense attention fusion block (RDAFB). In RDAFB, the attention maps inferred from the outputs of the preceding RDAFB and each layer are directly connected to the subsequent ones, leading to a CCLAT mechanism. Taking RDAFB as the building block, we design an effective architecture for dynamic scene deblurring named RDAFNet. The experiments on benchmark datasets show that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art deblurring approaches, and demonstrate the effectiveness of CCLAT mechanism.

Decision-making of Emergent Incident based on P-MADDPG

In recent years, human casualties and damage to resources caused by emergent incidents have become a serious problem worldwide. In this paper, we model the emergency decision-making problem and use Multi-agent System (MAS) to solve the problem that the decision speed cannot keep up with the spreading speed. MAS can play an important role in the automated execution of these tasks to reduce mission completion time. In this paper, we propose a P-MADDPG algorithm to solve the emergency decision-making problem of emergent incidents, which predicts the nodes where an incident may occur in the next time by GRU model and makes decisions before the incident occurs, thus solving the problem that the decision speed cannot keep up with the spreading speed. A simulation environment was established for realistic scenarios, and three scenarios were selected to test the performance of P-MADDPG in emergency decision-making problems for emergent incidents: unmanned storage, factory assembly line, and civil airport baggage transportation. Simulation results using the P-MADDPG algorithm are compared with the greedy algorithm and the MADDPG algorithm, and the final experimental results show that the P-MADDPG algorithm converges faster and better than the other algorithms in scenarios of different sizes. This shows that the P-MADDP algorithm is effective for emergency decision-making in emergent incident.

This article proposes a scheme for nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center magnetometry that combines the advantages of lock-in detection and pulse-type scheme. The optimal conditions, optimal sensitivity, and noise-suppression capability of the proposed method are compared with those of the conventional methods from both theoretical and simulation points of view. Through experimental measurements, a four-time improvement in sensitivity and 60-times improvement in minimum resolvable magnetic field (MRMF) was obtained. By using a confocal experiment setup, proposed scheme achieves a sensitivity of 3 nT/Hz1/2 and a MRMF of 100 pT.
