Distributed MIMO coding scheme with low decoding complexity for future mobile TV broadcasting

A novel distributed space-time block code (STBC) for the next generation mobile TV broadcasting is proposed. The new code provides efficient performance within a wide range of power imbalance showing strong adaptivity to the single frequency network (SFN) broadcasting deployments. The new code outperforms existing STBCs with equivalent decoding complexity and approaches those with much higher complexities.

Enhanced Mobile Digital Video Broadcasting with Distributed Space-Time Coding

This paper investigates the distributed space-time (ST) coding proposals for the future Digital Video Broadcasting--Next Generation Handheld (DVB-NGH) standard. We first theoretically show that the distributed MIMO scheme is the best broadcasting scenario in terms of channel capacity. Consequently we evaluate the performance of several ST coding proposals for DVB-NGH with practical system specifications and channel conditions. Simulation results demonstrate that the 3D code is the best ST coding solution for broadcasting in the distributed MIMO scenario.

Improved Channel Estimation Methods based on PN sequence for TDS-OFDM

An accurate channel estimation is crucial for the novel time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) scheme in which pseudo noise (PN) sequences serve as both guard intervals (GI) for OFDM data symbols and training sequences for synchronization/channel estimation. This paper studies the channel estimation method based on the cross-correlation of PN sequences. A theoretical analysis of this estimator is conducted and several improved estimators are then proposed to reduce the estimation error floor encountered by the PN-correlation-based estimator. It is shown through mathematical derivations and simulations that the new estimators approach or even achieve the Cramer-Rao bound.

Comments on "Unusual Thermoelectric Behavior Indicating a Hopping to Bandlike Transport Transition in Pentacene"

W. Chr. Germs, K. Guo, R. A. J. Janssen, and M. Kemerink [1] recently measured the temperature and concentration dependent seebeck coefficient in organic thin film transistor and found the seebeck coefficient increases with carrier concentration (corresponding to the gate voltage) in the low temperature regime. They further concluded that this unusual behavior is due to a transition from hopping transport in static localized states to bandlike transport, occurring at low temperatures. This is obviously in contrast to the previous theoretical prediction because it is widely accepted that hopping transport is more pronounced at low temperature. We will discuss the reason for this unusual behavior here and suggest that the density of states function plays an important role in concentration dependent seebeck coefficient.

Validity of Transport Energy in Disordered Organic Semiconductors

A systematic study of the transport energy in disordered organic semiconductors based on variable range hopping theory has been presented here. The temperature, electric field, material disorder and carrier concentration dependent transport energy is extensively discussed. We demonstrate here, transport energy is not a general concept and invalid even in low electric field and concentration regime.

Switching teraherz waves with gate-controlled active graphene metamaterials

The extraordinary electronic properties of graphene, such as its continuously gate-variable ambipolar field effect and the resulting steep change in resistivity, provided the main thrusts for the rapid advance of graphene electronics. The gate-controllable electronic properties of graphene provide a route to efficiently manipulate the interaction of low-energy photons with massless Dirac fermions, which has recently sparked keen interest in graphene plasmonics. However, the electro-optic tuning capability of unpatterned graphene alone is still not strong enough for practical optoelectronic applications due to its nonresonant Drude-like behaviour. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that substantial gate-induced persistent switching and linear modulation of terahertz waves can be achieved in a two-dimensional artificial material, referred to as a metamaterial, into which an atomically thin, gated two-dimensional graphene layer is integrated. The gate-controllable light-matter interaction in the graphene layer can be greatly enhanced by the strong resonances and the corresponding field enhancement in the metamaterial. Although the thickness of the embedded single-layer graphene is more than 'six' orders of magnitude smaller than the wavelength (< λ/1,000,000), the one-atom-thick layer, in conjunction with the metamaterial, can modulate both the amplitude of the transmitted wave by up to 90 per cent and its phase by more than 40 degrees at room temperature. More interestingly, the gate-controlled active graphene metamaterials show hysteretic behaviour in the transmission of terahertz waves, especially when fabricated with multilayer graphene, which is indicative of persistent photonic memory effects.

Extraordinary transmission caused by symmetry breaking

The terahertz transmission properties of symmetrical and asymmetrical annular apertures arrays (AAAs) are investigated both experimentally and numerically. It is found that only odd order resonant modes are observed for the symmetrical structures but both odd and even order resonances can be shown for the asymmetrical structures. Breaking the symmetry of AAAs by gradually displacing the H-shaped AAAs to U-shaped AAAs allows an intensity modulation depth of 99% of the second order resonance. Simulation results verify the experimental conclusions well. This result provides a tremendous opportunity for terahertz wavelength tunable filtering, sensing, and near-field imaging.

A Novel Data-Aided Channel Estimation with Reduced Complexity for TDS-OFDM Systems

In contrast to the classical cyclic prefix (CP)-OFDM, the time domain synchronous (TDS)-OFDM employs a known pseudo noise (PN) sequence as guard interval (GI). Conventional channel estimation methods for TDS-OFDM are based on the exploitation of the PN sequence and consequently suffer from intersymbol interference (ISI). This paper proposes a novel dataaided channel estimation method which combines the channel estimates obtained from the PN sequence and, most importantly, additional channel estimates extracted from OFDM data symbols. Data-aided channel estimation is carried out using the rebuilt OFDM data symbols as virtual training sequences. In contrast to the classical turbo channel estimation, interleaving and decoding functions are not included in the feedback loop when rebuilding OFDM data symbols thereby reducing the complexity. Several improved techniques are proposed to refine the data-aided channel estimates, namely one-dimensional (1-D)/two-dimensional (2-D) moving average and Wiener filtering. Finally, the MMSE criteria is used to obtain the best combination results and an iterative process is proposed to progressively refine the estimation. Both MSE and BER simulations using specifications of the DTMB system are carried out to prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm even in very harsh channel conditions such as in the single frequency network (SFN) case.

Enhanced DNA sequencing performance through edge-hydrogenation of graphene electrodes

We propose using graphene electrodes with hydrogenated edges for solid-state nanopore-based DNA sequencing, and perform molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with electronic transport calculations to explore the potential merits of this idea. The results of our investigation show that, compared to the unhydrogenated system, edge-hydrogenated graphene electrodes facilitate the temporary formation of H-bonds with suitable atomic sites in the translocating DNA molecule. As a consequence, the average conductivity is drastically raised by about 3 orders of magnitude while exhibiting significantly reduced statistical variance. We have furthermore investigated how these results are affected when the distance between opposing electrodes is varied and have identified two regimes: for narrow electrode separation, the mere hindrance due to the presence of protruding hydrogen atoms in the nanopore is deemed more important, while for wider electrode separation, the formation of H-bonds becomes the dominant effect. Based on these findings, we conclude that hydrogenation of graphene electrode edges represents a promising approach to reduce the translocation speed of DNA through the nanopore and substantially improve the accuracy of the measurement process for whole-genome sequencing.

Pairing and Quantum Double of Finite Hopf C*-Algebras

This paper defines a pairing of two finite Hopf C*-algebras $A$ and $B$, and investigates the interactions between them. If the pairing is non-degenerate, then the quantum double construction is given. This construction yields a new finite Hopf C*-algebra $D(A,B)$. The canonical embedding maps of $A$ and $B$ into the double are both isometric.

Nonabelian cohomology of compact Lie groups

Given a Lie group $G$ with finitely many components and a compact Lie group A which acts on $G$ by automorphisms, we prove that there always exists an A-invariant maximal compact subgroup K of G, and that for every such K, the natural map $H^1(A,K)\to H^1(A,G)$ is bijective. This generalizes a classical result of Serre [6] and a recent result in [1].

Analysis and Performance Comparison of DVB-T and DTMB Systems for Terrestrial Digital TV

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is the most popular transmission technology in digital terrestrial broadcasting (DTTB), adopted by many DTTB standards. In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) performance of two DTTB systems, namely cyclic prefix OFDM (CP-OFDM) based DVB-T and time domain synchronous OFDM (TDS-OFDM) based DTMB, is evaluated in different channel conditions. Spectrum utilization and power efficiency are also discussed to demonstrate the transmission overhead of both systems. Simulation results show that the performances of the two systems are much close. Given the same ratio of guard interval (GI), the DVB-T outperforms DTMB in terms of signal to noise ratio (SNR) in Gaussian and Ricean channels, while DTMB behaves better performance in Rayleigh channel in higher code rates and higher orders of constellation thanks to its efficient channel coding and interleaving scheme.

Plasmonic Metamaterial With Coupling Induced Transparency

A plasmonic "molecule" consisting of a radiative element coupled with a sub-radiant (dark) element is theoretically investigated. The plasmonic "molecule" shows close resemblance to the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an atomic system. Because of its sub-wavelength dimension, this EIT-like "molecule" can be used as building block to construct a "slow light" plasmonic metamaterial.
