SmartTrim: Adaptive Tokens and Attention Pruning for Efficient Vision-Language Models

Despite achieving remarkable performance on various vision-language tasks, Transformer-based Vision-Language Models (VLMs) suffer from redundancy in inputs and parameters, significantly hampering their efficiency in real-world applications. Moreover, the degree of redundancy in token representations and model parameters, such as attention heads, varies significantly for different inputs. In light of the challenges, we propose SmartTrim, an adaptive acceleration framework for VLMs, which adjusts the computational overhead per instance. Specifically, we integrate lightweight modules into the original backbone to identify and prune redundant token representations and attention heads within each layer. Furthermore, we devise a self-distillation strategy to enhance the consistency between the predictions of the pruned model and its fully-capacity counterpart. Experimental results across various vision-language tasks consistently demonstrate that SmartTrim accelerates the original model by 2-3 times with minimal performance degradation, highlighting the effectiveness and efficiency compared to previous approaches. Code will be available at https://github.com/kugwzk/SmartTrim.

CoLRIO: LiDAR-Ranging-Inertial Centralized State Estimation for Robotic Swarms

Collaborative state estimation using different heterogeneous sensors is a fundamental prerequisite for robotic swarms operating in GPS-denied environments, posing a significant research challenge. In this paper, we introduce a centralized system to facilitate collaborative LiDAR-ranging-inertial state estimation, enabling robotic swarms to operate without the need for anchor deployment. The system efficiently distributes computationally intensive tasks to a central server, thereby reducing the computational burden on individual robots for local odometry calculations. The server back-end establishes a global reference by leveraging shared data and refining joint pose graph optimization through place recognition, global optimization techniques, and removal of outlier data to ensure precise and robust collaborative state estimation. Extensive evaluations of our system, utilizing both publicly available datasets and our custom datasets, demonstrate significant enhancements in the accuracy of collaborative SLAM estimates. Moreover, our system exhibits remarkable proficiency in large-scale missions, seamlessly enabling ten robots to collaborate effectively in performing SLAM tasks. In order to contribute to the research community, we will make our code open-source and accessible at \url{https://github.com/PengYu-team/Co-LRIO}.

IR-STP: Enhancing Autonomous Driving with Interaction Reasoning in Spatio-Temporal Planning

Considerable research efforts have been devoted to the development of motion planning algorithms, which form a cornerstone of the autonomous driving system (ADS). Nonetheless, acquiring an interactive and secure trajectory for the ADS remains challenging due to the complex nature of interaction modeling in planning. Modern planning methods still employ a uniform treatment of prediction outcomes and solely rely on collision-avoidance strategies, leading to suboptimal planning performance. To address this limitation, this paper presents a novel prediction-based interactive planning framework for autonomous driving. Our method incorporates interaction reasoning into spatio-temporal (s-t) planning by defining interaction conditions and constraints. Specifically, it records and continually updates interaction relations for each planned state throughout the forward search. We assess the performance of our approach alongside state-of-the-art methods in the CommonRoad environment. Our experiments include a total of 232 scenarios, with variations in the accuracy of prediction outcomes, modality, and degrees of planner aggressiveness. The experimental findings demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our method. It leads to a reduction of collision times by approximately 17.6% in 3-modal scenarios, along with improvements of nearly 7.6% in distance completeness and 31.7% in the fail rate in single-modal scenarios. For the community's reference, our code is accessible at https://github.com/ChenYingbing/IR-STP-Planner.

PALoc: Advancing SLAM Benchmarking with Prior-Assisted 6-DoF Trajectory Generation and Uncertainty Estimation

Accurately generating ground truth (GT) trajectories is essential for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) evaluation, particularly under varying environmental conditions. This study introduces a systematic approach employing a prior map-assisted framework for generating dense six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) GT poses for the first time, enhancing the fidelity of both indoor and outdoor SLAM datasets. Our method excels in handling degenerate and stationary conditions frequently encountered in SLAM datasets, thereby increasing robustness and precision. A significant aspect of our approach is the detailed derivation of covariances within the factor graph, enabling an in-depth analysis of pose uncertainty propagation. This analysis crucially contributes to demonstrating specific pose uncertainties and enhancing trajectory reliability from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. Additionally, we provide an open-source toolbox (https://github.com/JokerJohn/Cloud_Map_Evaluation) for map evaluation criteria, facilitating the indirect assessment of overall trajectory precision. Experimental results show at least a 30\% improvement in map accuracy and a 20\% increase in direct trajectory accuracy compared to the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) \cite{sharp2002icp} algorithm across diverse campus environments, with substantially enhanced robustness. Our open-source solution (https://github.com/JokerJohn/PALoc), extensively applied in the FusionPortable\cite{Jiao2022Mar} dataset, is geared towards SLAM benchmark dataset augmentation and represents a significant advancement in SLAM evaluations.

KwaiAgents: Generalized Information-seeking Agent System with Large Language Models

Driven by curiosity, humans have continually sought to explore and understand the world around them, leading to the invention of various tools to satiate this inquisitiveness. Despite not having the capacity to process and memorize vast amounts of information in their brains, humans excel in critical thinking, planning, reflection, and harnessing available tools to interact with and interpret the world, enabling them to find answers efficiently. The recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) suggest that machines might also possess the aforementioned human-like capabilities, allowing them to exhibit powerful abilities even with a constrained parameter count. In this paper, we introduce KwaiAgents, a generalized information-seeking agent system based on LLMs. Within KwaiAgents, we propose an agent system that employs LLMs as its cognitive core, which is capable of understanding a user's query, behavior guidelines, and referencing external documents. The agent can also update and retrieve information from its internal memory, plan and execute actions using a time-aware search-browse toolkit, and ultimately provide a comprehensive response. We further investigate the system's performance when powered by LLMs less advanced than GPT-4, and introduce the Meta-Agent Tuning (MAT) framework, designed to ensure even an open-sourced 7B or 13B model performs well among many agent systems. We exploit both benchmark and human evaluations to systematically validate these capabilities. Extensive experiments show the superiority of our agent system compared to other autonomous agents and highlight the enhanced generalized agent-abilities of our fine-tuned LLMs.

Hi-Map: Hierarchical Factorized Radiance Field for High-Fidelity Monocular Dense Mapping

In this paper, we introduce Hi-Map, a novel monocular dense mapping approach based on Neural Radiance Field (NeRF). Hi-Map is exceptional in its capacity to achieve efficient and high-fidelity mapping using only posed RGB inputs. Our method eliminates the need for external depth priors derived from e.g., a depth estimation model. Our key idea is to represent the scene as a hierarchical feature grid that encodes the radiance and then factorizes it into feature planes and vectors. As such, the scene representation becomes simpler and more generalizable for fast and smooth convergence on new observations. This allows for efficient computation while alleviating noise patterns by reducing the complexity of the scene representation. Buttressed by the hierarchical factorized representation, we leverage the Sign Distance Field (SDF) as a proxy of rendering for inferring the volume density, demonstrating high mapping fidelity. Moreover, we introduce a dual-path encoding strategy to strengthen the photometric cues and further boost the mapping quality, especially for the distant and textureless regions. Extensive experiments demonstrate our method's superiority in geometric and textural accuracy over the state-of-the-art NeRF-based monocular mapping methods.

A unified multichannel far-field speech recognition system: combining neural beamforming with attention based end-to-end model

Far-field speech recognition is a challenging task that conventionally uses signal processing beamforming to attack noise and interference problem. But the performance has been found usually limited due to heavy reliance on environmental assumption. In this paper, we propose a unified multichannel far-field speech recognition system that combines the neural beamforming and transformer-based Listen, Spell, Attend (LAS) speech recognition system, which extends the end-to-end speech recognition system further to include speech enhancement. Such framework is then jointly trained to optimize the final objective of interest. Specifically, factored complex linear projection (fCLP) has been adopted to form the neural beamforming. Several pooling strategies to combine look directions are then compared in order to find the optimal approach. Moreover, information of the source direction is also integrated in the beamforming to explore the usefulness of source direction as a prior, which is usually available especially in multi-modality scenario. Experiments on different microphone array geometry are conducted to evaluate the robustness against spacing variance of microphone array. Large in-house databases are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed framework and the proposed method achieve 19.26\% improvement when compared with a strong baseline.

A GAN-based Semantic Communication for Text without CSI

Recently, semantic communication (SC) has been regarded as one of the potential paradigms of 6G. Current SC frameworks require channel state information (CSI) to handle severe signal distortion induced by channel fading. Since the channel estimation overhead for obtaining CSI cannot be neglected, we therefore propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) based SC framework (Ti-GSC) that doesn't require CSI. In Ti-GSC, two main modules, i.e., an autoencoder-based encoder-decoder module (AEDM) and a GAN-based signal distortion suppression module (GSDSM) are included where AEDM first encodes the data at the source before transmission, and then GSDSM suppresses the distortion of the received signals in both syntactic and semantic dimensions at the destination. At last, AEDM decodes the distortion-suppressed signal at the destination. To measure signal distortion, syntactic distortion and semantic distortion terms are newly added to the total loss function. To achieve better training results, joint optimization-based training (JOT) and alternating optimization-based training (AOT) are designed for the proposed Ti-GSC. Experimental results show that JOT is more efficient for Ti-GSC. Moreover, without CSI, bilingual evaluation understudy (BLEU) score achieved by Ti-GSC is about 40% and 62% higher than that achieved by existing SC frameworks in Rician and Rayleigh fading, respectively. Black-Box Tuning of Vision-Language Models with Effective Gradient Approximation

Parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods have provided an effective way for adapting large vision-language models to specific tasks or scenarios. Typically, they learn a very small scale of parameters for pre-trained models in a white-box formulation, which assumes model architectures to be known and parameters to be accessible. However, large models are often not open-source due to considerations of preventing abuse or commercial factors, hence posing a barrier to the deployment of white-box PEFT methods. To alleviate the dependence on model accessibility, we introduce collaborative black-box tuning (CBBT) for both textual prompt optimization and output feature adaptation for black-box models. Specifically, considering that the backpropagation gradients are blocked, we approximate the gradients of textual prompts by analyzing the predictions with perturbed prompts. Secondly, a lightweight adapter is deployed over the output feature of the inaccessible model, further facilitating the model adaptation process. Empowered with these designs, our CBBT is extensively evaluated on eleven downstream benchmarks and achieves remarkable improvements compared to existing black-box VL adaptation methods. Code is released at https://github.com/guozix/cbbt.

U2-KWS: Unified Two-pass Open-vocabulary Keyword Spotting with Keyword Bias

Open-vocabulary keyword spotting (KWS), which allows users to customize keywords, has attracted increasingly more interest. However, existing methods based on acoustic models and post-processing train the acoustic model with ASR training criteria to model all phonemes, making the acoustic model under-optimized for the KWS task. To solve this problem, we propose a novel unified two-pass open-vocabulary KWS (U2-KWS) framework inspired by the two-pass ASR model U2. Specifically, we employ the CTC branch as the first stage model to detect potential keyword candidates and the decoder branch as the second stage model to validate candidates. In order to enhance any customized keywords, we redesign the U2 training procedure for U2-KWS and add keyword information by audio and text cross-attention into both branches. We perform experiments on our internal dataset and Aishell-1. The results show that U2-KWS can achieve a significant relative wake-up rate improvement of 41% compared to the traditional customized KWS systems when the false alarm rate is fixed to 0.5 times per hour.

Random resistive memory-based deep extreme point learning machine for unified visual processing

Visual sensors, including 3D LiDAR, neuromorphic DVS sensors, and conventional frame cameras, are increasingly integrated into edge-side intelligent machines. Realizing intensive multi-sensory data analysis directly on edge intelligent machines is crucial for numerous emerging edge applications, such as augmented and virtual reality and unmanned aerial vehicles, which necessitates unified data representation, unprecedented hardware energy efficiency and rapid model training. However, multi-sensory data are intrinsically heterogeneous, causing significant complexity in the system development for edge-side intelligent machines. In addition, the performance of conventional digital hardware is limited by the physically separated processing and memory units, known as the von Neumann bottleneck, and the physical limit of transistor scaling, which contributes to the slowdown of Moore's law. These limitations are further intensified by the tedious training of models with ever-increasing sizes. We propose a novel hardware-software co-design, random resistive memory-based deep extreme point learning machine (DEPLM), that offers efficient unified point set analysis. We show the system's versatility across various data modalities and two different learning tasks. Compared to a conventional digital hardware-based system, our co-design system achieves huge energy efficiency improvements and training cost reduction when compared to conventional systems. Our random resistive memory-based deep extreme point learning machine may pave the way for energy-efficient and training-friendly edge AI across various data modalities and tasks.

High Q and high gradient performance of the first medium-temperature baking 1.3 GHz cryomodule

World's first 1.3 GHz cryomodule containing eight 9-cell superconducting radio-frequency (RF) cavities treated by medium-temperature furnace baking (mid-T bake) was developed, assembled and tested at IHEP for the Dalian Advanced Light Source (DALS) and CEPC R&D. The 9-cell cavities in the cryomodule achieved an unprecedented highest average Q0 of 3.8E10 at 16 MV/m and 3.6E10 at 21 MV/m in the horizontal test. The cryomodule can operate stably up to a total CW RF voltage greater than 191 MV, with an average cavity CW accelerating gradient of more than 23 MV/m. The results significantly exceed the specifications of CEPC, DALS and the other high repetition rate free electron laser facilities (LCLS-II, LCLS-II-HE, SHINE, S3FEL). There is evidence that the mid-T bake cavity may not require fast cool-down or long processing time in the cryomodule. This paper reviews the cryomodule performance and discusses some important issues in cryomodule assembly and testing.

Generalized 3D Self-supervised Learning Framework via Prompted Foreground-Aware Feature Contrast

Contrastive learning has recently demonstrated great potential for unsupervised pre-training in 3D scene understanding tasks. However, most existing work randomly selects point features as anchors while building contrast, leading to a clear bias toward background points that often dominate in 3D scenes. Also, object awareness and foreground-to-background discrimination are neglected, making contrastive learning less effective. To tackle these issues, we propose a general foreground-aware feature contrast FAC++ framework to learn more effective point cloud representations in pre-training. FAC++ consists of two novel contrast designs to construct more effective and informative contrast pairs. The first is building positive pairs within the same foreground segment where points tend to have the same semantics. The second is that we prevent over-discrimination between 3D segments/objects and encourage grouped foreground-to-background distinctions at the segment level with adaptive feature learning in a Siamese correspondence network, which adaptively learns feature correlations within and across point cloud views effectively. Moreover, we have designed the foreground-prompted regional sampling to enhance more balanced foreground-aware learning, which is termed FAC++. Visualization with point activation maps shows that our contrast pairs capture clear correspondences among foreground regions during pre-training. Quantitative experiments also show that FAC++ achieves superior knowledge transfer and data efficiency in various downstream 3D semantic segmentation, instance segmentation as well as object detection tasks. All codes, data, and models are available at: https://github.com/KangchengLiu/FAC_Foreground_Aware_Contrast

Pruning random resistive memory for optimizing analogue AI

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has been marked by the large language models exhibiting human-like intelligence. However, these models also present unprecedented challenges to energy consumption and environmental sustainability. One promising solution is to revisit analogue computing, a technique that predates digital computing and exploits emerging analogue electronic devices, such as resistive memory, which features in-memory computing, high scalability, and nonvolatility. However, analogue computing still faces the same challenges as before: programming nonidealities and expensive programming due to the underlying devices physics. Here, we report a universal solution, software-hardware co-design using structural plasticity-inspired edge pruning to optimize the topology of a randomly weighted analogue resistive memory neural network. Software-wise, the topology of a randomly weighted neural network is optimized by pruning connections rather than precisely tuning resistive memory weights. Hardware-wise, we reveal the physical origin of the programming stochasticity using transmission electron microscopy, which is leveraged for large-scale and low-cost implementation of an overparameterized random neural network containing high-performance sub-networks. We implemented the co-design on a 40nm 256K resistive memory macro, observing 17.3% and 19.9% accuracy improvements in image and audio classification on FashionMNIST and Spoken digits datasets, as well as 9.8% (2%) improvement in PR (ROC) in image segmentation on DRIVE datasets, respectively. This is accompanied by 82.1%, 51.2%, and 99.8% improvement in energy efficiency thanks to analogue in-memory computing. By embracing the intrinsic stochasticity and in-memory computing, this work may solve the biggest obstacle of analogue computing systems and thus unleash their immense potential for next-generation AI hardware.

MTGER: Multi-view Temporal Graph Enhanced Temporal Reasoning over Time-Involved Document

The facts and time in the document are intricately intertwined, making temporal reasoning over documents challenging. Previous work models time implicitly, making it difficult to handle such complex relationships. To address this issue, we propose MTGER, a novel Multi-view Temporal Graph Enhanced Temporal Reasoning framework for temporal reasoning over time-involved documents. Concretely, MTGER explicitly models the temporal relationships among facts by multi-view temporal graphs. On the one hand, the heterogeneous temporal graphs explicitly model the temporal and discourse relationships among facts; on the other hand, the multi-view mechanism captures both time-focused and fact-focused information, allowing the two views to complement each other through adaptive fusion. To further improve the implicit reasoning capability of the model, we design a self-supervised time-comparing objective. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on the TimeQA and SituatedQA datasets. Furthermore, MTGER gives more consistent answers under question perturbations.

Beyond Image Borders: Learning Feature Extrapolation for Unbounded Image Composition

For improving image composition and aesthetic quality, most existing methods modulate the captured images by striking out redundant content near the image borders. However, such image cropping methods are limited in the range of image views. Some methods have been suggested to extrapolate the images and predict cropping boxes from the extrapolated image. Nonetheless, the synthesized extrapolated regions may be included in the cropped image, making the image composition result not real and potentially with degraded image quality. In this paper, we circumvent this issue by presenting a joint framework for both unbounded recommendation of camera view and image composition (i.e., UNIC). In this way, the cropped image is a sub-image of the image acquired by the predicted camera view, and thus can be guaranteed to be real and consistent in image quality. Specifically, our framework takes the current camera preview frame as input and provides a recommendation for view adjustment, which contains operations unlimited by the image borders, such as zooming in or out and camera movement. To improve the prediction accuracy of view adjustment prediction, we further extend the field of view by feature extrapolation. After one or several times of view adjustments, our method converges and results in both a camera view and a bounding box showing the image composition recommendation. Extensive experiments are conducted on the datasets constructed upon existing image cropping datasets, showing the effectiveness of our UNIC in unbounded recommendation of camera view and image composition. The source code, dataset, and pretrained models is available at https://github.com/liuxiaoyu1104/UNIC.

Rethinking Imitation-based Planner for Autonomous Driving

In recent years, imitation-based driving planners have reported considerable success. However, due to the absence of a standardized benchmark, the effectiveness of various designs remains unclear. The newly released nuPlan addresses this issue by offering a large-scale real-world dataset and a standardized closed-loop benchmark for equitable comparisons. Utilizing this platform, we conduct a comprehensive study on two fundamental yet underexplored aspects of imitation-based planners: the essential features for ego planning and the effective data augmentation techniques to reduce compounding errors. Furthermore, we highlight an imitation gap that has been overlooked by current learning systems. Finally, integrating our findings, we propose a strong baseline model-PlanTF. Our results demonstrate that a well-designed, purely imitation-based planner can achieve highly competitive performance compared to state-of-the-art methods involving hand-crafted rules and exhibit superior generalization capabilities in long-tail cases. Our models and benchmarks are publicly available. Project website https://jchengai.github.io/planTF.
