Quantum Approximate $k$-Minimum Finding

Quantum $k$-minimum finding is a fundamental subroutine with numerous applications in combinatorial problems and machine learning. Previous approaches typically assume oracle access to exact function values, making it challenging to integrate this subroutine with other quantum algorithms. In this paper, we propose an (almost) optimal quantum $k$-minimum finding algorithm that works with approximate values for all $k \geq 1$, extending a result of van Apeldoorn, Gilyén, Gribling, and de Wolf (FOCS 2017) for $k=1$. As practical applications of this algorithm, we present efficient quantum algorithms for identifying the $k$ smallest expectation values among multiple observables and for determining the $k$ lowest ground state energies of a Hamiltonian with a known eigenbasis.

Logarithmic-Regret Quantum Learning Algorithms for Zero-Sum Games

We propose the first online quantum algorithm for solving zero-sum games with $\widetilde O(1)$ regret under the game setting. Moreover, our quantum algorithm computes an $\varepsilon$-approximate Nash equilibrium of an $m \times n$ matrix zero-sum game in quantum time $\widetilde O(\sqrt{m+n}/\varepsilon^{2.5})$. Our algorithm uses standard quantum inputs and generates classical outputs with succinct descriptions, facilitating end-to-end applications. Technically, our online quantum algorithm "quantizes" classical algorithms based on the optimistic multiplicative weight update method. At the heart of our algorithm is a fast quantum multi-sampling procedure for the Gibbs sampling problem, which may be of independent interest.

Fault Models in Superconducting quantum circuits

Fault models are indispensable for many EDA tasks, so as for design and implementation of quantum hardware. In this article, we propose a fault model for superconducting quantum systems. Our fault model reflects the real fault behavior in control signals and structure of quantum systems. Based on it, we conduct fault simulation on controlled-Z gate and quantum circuits by QuTiP. We provide fidelity benchmarks for incoherent faults and test patterns of minimal test repetitions for coherent faults. Results show that with 34 test repetitions a 10% control noise can be detected, which help to save test time and memory.

A Provably Efficient Algorithm for Linear Markov Decision Process with Low Switching Cost

Many real-world applications, such as those in medical domains, recommendation systems, etc, can be formulated as large state space reinforcement learning problems with only a small budget of the number of policy changes, i.e., low switching cost. This paper focuses on the linear Markov Decision Process (MDP) recently studied in [Yang et al 2019, Jin et al 2020] where the linear function approximation is used for generalization on the large state space. We present the first algorithm for linear MDP with a low switching cost. Our algorithm achieves an $\widetilde{O}\left(\sqrt{d^3H^4K}\right)$ regret bound with a near-optimal $O\left(d H\log K\right)$ global switching cost where $d$ is the feature dimension, $H$ is the planning horizon and $K$ is the number of episodes the agent plays. Our regret bound matches the best existing polynomial algorithm by [Jin et al 2020] and our switching cost is exponentially smaller than theirs. When specialized to tabular MDP, our switching cost bound improves those in [Bai et al 2019, Zhang et al 20020]. We complement our positive result with an $Ω\left(dH/\log d\right)$ global switching cost lower bound for any no-regret algorithm.

One-shot dynamical resource theory

A fundamental problem in resource theory is to study the manipulation of the resource. Focusing on a general dynamical resource theory of quantum channels, here we consider tasks of one-shot resource distillation and dilution with a single copy of the resource. For any target of unitary channel or pure state preparation channel, we establish a universal strategy to determine upper and lower bounds on rates that convert between any given resource and the target. We show that the rates are related to resource measures based on the channel robustness and the channel hypothesis testing entropy, with regularization factors of the target resource measures. The strategy becomes optimal with converged bounds when the channel robustness is finite and measures of the target resource collapse to the same value. The single-shot result also applies to asymptotic parallel manipulation of channels to obtain asymptotic resource conversion rates. We give several examples of dynamical resources, including the purity, classical capacity, quantum capacity, non-uniformity, coherence, and entanglement of quantum channels. Our results are applicable to general dynamical resource theories with potential applications in quantum communication, fault-tolerant quantum computing, and quantum thermodynamics.
