Neural Machine Translation Advised by Statistical Machine Translation

Neural Machine Translation (NMT) is a new approach to machine translation that has made great progress in recent years. However, recent studies show that NMT generally produces fluent but inadequate translations (Tu et al. 2016b; Tu et al. 2016a; He et al. 2016; Tu et al. 2017). This is in contrast to conventional Statistical Machine Translation (SMT), which usually yields adequate but non-fluent translations. It is natural, therefore, to leverage the advantages of both models for better translations, and in this work we propose to incorporate SMT model into NMT framework. More specifically, at each decoding step, SMT offers additional recommendations of generated words based on the decoding information from NMT (e.g., the generated partial translation and attention history). Then we employ an auxiliary classifier to score the SMT recommendations and a gating function to combine the SMT recommendations with NMT generations, both of which are jointly trained within the NMT architecture in an end-to-end manner. Experimental results on Chinese-English translation show that the proposed approach achieves significant and consistent improvements over state-of-the-art NMT and SMT systems on multiple NIST test sets.

On Two Diophantine Inequalities Over Primes

Let $1<c<37/18,\,c\neq2$ and $N$ be a sufficiently large real number. In this paper, we prove that, for almost all $R\in(N,2N],$ the Diophantine inequality $|p_1^c+p_2^c+p_3^c-R|<\log^{-1}N$ is solvable in primes $p_1,\,p_2,\,p_3.$ Moreover, we also investigate the problem of six primes and prove that the Diophantine inequality $|p_1^c+p_2^c+p_3^c+p_4^c+p_5^c+p_6^c-N|<\log^{-1}N$ is solvable in primes $p_1,\,p_2,\,p_3,\,p_4,\,p_5,\,p_6$ for sufficiently large real number $N$.

Training Dependency Parsers with Partial Annotation

Recently, these has been a surge on studying how to obtain partially annotated data for model supervision. However, there still lacks a systematic study on how to train statistical models with partial annotation (PA). Taking dependency parsing as our case study, this paper describes and compares two straightforward approaches for three mainstream dependency parsers. The first approach is previously proposed to directly train a log-linear graph-based parser (LLGPar) with PA based on a forest-based objective. This work for the first time proposes the second approach to directly training a linear graph-based parse (LGPar) and a linear transition-based parser (LTPar) with PA based on the idea of constrained decoding. We conduct extensive experiments on Penn Treebank under three different settings for simulating PA, i.e., random dependencies, most uncertain dependencies, and dependencies with divergent outputs from the three parsers. The results show that LLGPar is most effective in learning from PA and LTPar lags behind the graph-based counterparts by large margin. Moreover, LGPar and LTPar can achieve best performance by using LLGPar to complete PA into full annotation (FA).

Variational Neural Discourse Relation Recognizer

Implicit discourse relation recognition is a crucial component for automatic discourselevel analysis and nature language understanding. Previous studies exploit discriminative models that are built on either powerful manual features or deep discourse representations. In this paper, instead, we explore generative models and propose a variational neural discourse relation recognizer. We refer to this model as VarNDRR. VarNDRR establishes a directed probabilistic model with a latent continuous variable that generates both a discourse and the relation between the two arguments of the discourse. In order to perform efficient inference and learning, we introduce neural discourse relation models to approximate the prior and posterior distributions of the latent variable, and employ these approximated distributions to optimize a reparameterized variational lower bound. This allows VarNDRR to be trained with standard stochastic gradient methods. Experiments on the benchmark data set show that VarNDRR can achieve comparable results against stateof- the-art baselines without using any manual features.

Variational Neural Machine Translation

Models of neural machine translation are often from a discriminative family of encoderdecoders that learn a conditional distribution of a target sentence given a source sentence. In this paper, we propose a variational model to learn this conditional distribution for neural machine translation: a variational encoderdecoder model that can be trained end-to-end. Different from the vanilla encoder-decoder model that generates target translations from hidden representations of source sentences alone, the variational model introduces a continuous latent variable to explicitly model underlying semantics of source sentences and to guide the generation of target translations. In order to perform efficient posterior inference and large-scale training, we build a neural posterior approximator conditioned on both the source and the target sides, and equip it with a reparameterization technique to estimate the variational lower bound. Experiments on both Chinese-English and English- German translation tasks show that the proposed variational neural machine translation achieves significant improvements over the vanilla neural machine translation baselines.

On the Sum of Divisors of Mixed Powers

Let $d(n)$ denote the Dirichlet divisor function. Define \begin{equation*} \mathcal{S}_{k}(x)=\sum_{\substack{1\leqslant n_1,n_2,n_3 \leqslant x^{1/2} \\ 1\leqslant n_4\leqslant x^{1/k} }} d(n_1^2+n_2^2+n_3^2+n_4^k), \qquad 3\leqslant k\in \mathbb{N}. \end{equation*} In this paper, we establish an asymptotic formula of $\mathcal{S}_k(x)$ and prove that \begin{equation*} \mathcal{S}_k(x)=C_1(k)x^{3/2+1/k}\log x+C_2(k)x^{3/2+1/k}+O(x^{3/2+1/k-δ_k+\varepsilon}), \end{equation*} where $C_1(k),\,C_2(k)$ are two constants depending only on $k,$ with $δ_3=\frac{19}{60},\,δ_4=\frac{5}{24},\,δ_5=\frac{19}{140},\,δ_6=\frac{25}{192},\, δ_7=\frac{457}{4032},\,δ_k=\frac{1}{k+2}+\frac{1}{2k^2(k-1)}$ for $k\geqslant8.$

Damped large amplitude oscillations in a solar prominence and a bundle of coronal loops

We investigate the evolutions of two prominences (P1,P2) and two bundles of coronal loops (L1,L2), observed with SDO/AIA near the east solar limb on 2012 September 22. It is found that there were large-amplitude oscillations in P1 and L1, but no detectable motions in P2 and L2. These transverse oscillations were triggered by a large-scale coronal wave, originating from a large flare in a remote active region behind the solar limb. By carefully comparing the locations and heights of these oscillating and non-oscillating structures, we conclude that the propagating height of the wave is between 50 Mm and 130 Mm. The wave energy deposited in the oscillating prominence and coronal loops is at least of the order of $10^{28}$ erg. Furthermore, local magnetic field strength and Alfvén speeds are derived from the oscillating periods and damping time scales, which are extracted from the time series of the oscillations. It is demonstrated that oscillations can be used in not only coronal seismology, but also revealing the properties of the wave.

Two-nucleon excitation from $p$ to $sd$ shell in $^{12,14}$C

The effect of the two-nucleon excitation from $p$ to $sd$ shell is discussed in $^{12}$C and $^{14}$C in the frame work of shell model. The recently suggested shell-model Hamiltonian YSOX provides an suitable tool to investigate the $2~\hbarω$ excitation in $psd$ region. Because the strength of the $ $ interaction, which represents the interaction between the $0~\hbarω$ and $2~\hbarω$ configurations, is considered in the construction of the YSOX. The level of $^{12}$C is almost independent on the $ $ interaction, but excitation energies of certain states in $^{14}$C are strongly affected by it. Further investigation shows that the percentage of $2~\hbarω$ configuration in these states is quite different from that of the ground state.

AC loss calculation for multi pancakes of (Re)BCO coated conductor using line front

We aim to demonstrate an efficient method to calculate the AC losses in multi-pancake coils. This method extends Yuan front-track model into several pancake application and investigates the detail parameters in comparison with established H-formula implemented in COMSOL and minimization of energy method. We use the front-track idea to analyze stacked pancakes assuming the current fronts are straight lines and using the critical state model. The current distribution is solved by two means: minimization of the perpendicular magnetic field in the subcritical region, as Clem and Yuan proposed; minimization of total magnetic energy. We also investigate the impacts of applied current and different gaps between multi pancakes on loss calculation. Our model provides a fast calculation method of AC loss in stacked (Re)BCO pancakes and is useful to HTS applications in high field magnets, energy storage devices and electric machines.

Boost Phrase-level Polarity Labelling with Review-level Sentiment Classification

Sentiment analysis on user reviews helps to keep track of user reactions towards products, and make advices to users about what to buy. State-of-the-art review-level sentiment classification techniques could give pretty good precisions of above 90%. However, current phrase-level sentiment analysis approaches might only give sentiment polarity labelling precisions of around 70%~80%, which is far from satisfaction and restricts its application in many practical tasks. In this paper, we focus on the problem of phrase-level sentiment polarity labelling and attempt to bridge the gap between phrase-level and review-level sentiment analysis. We investigate the inconsistency between the numerical star ratings and the sentiment orientation of textual user reviews. Although they have long been treated as identical, which serves as a basic assumption in previous work, we find that this assumption is not necessarily true. We further propose to leverage the results of review-level sentiment classification to boost the performance of phrase-level polarity labelling using a novel constrained convex optimization framework. Besides, the framework is capable of integrating various kinds of information sources and heuristics, while giving the global optimal solution due to its convexity. Experimental results on both English and Chinese reviews show that our framework achieves high labelling precisions of up to 89%, which is a significant improvement from current approaches.

3D Channel Model in 3GPP

Multi-antenna techniques capable of exploiting the elevation dimension are anticipated to be an important air-interface enhancement targeted to handle the expected growth in mobile traffic. In order to enable the development and evaluation of such multi-antenna techniques, the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) has recently developed a 3-dimensional (3D) channel model. The existing 2-dimensional (2D) channel models do not capture the elevation channel characteristics lending them insufficient for such studies. This article describes the main components of the newly developed 3D channel model and the motivations behind introducing them. One key aspect is the ability to model channels for users located on different floors of a building (at different heights). This is achieved by capturing a user height dependency in modelling some channel characteristics including pathloss, line-of-sight (LOS) probability, etc. In general this 3D channel model follows the framework of WINNERII/WINNER+ while also extending the applicability and the accuracy of the model by introducing some height and distance dependent elevation related parameters.

Enhancement of Visible-Light-Induced Photocurrent and Photocatalytic Activity of V and N Codoped TiO2 Nanotube Array Films

Highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) codoped with V and N were synthesized by electrochemical anodization in association with hydrothermal treatment. The samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocurrent and photocatalytic activity of codoped TiO2 nanotube arrays were investigated under visible light irradiation. Moreover, the production of hydroxyl radicals on the surface of visible light-irradiated samples is detected by a photoluminescence technique using terephthalic acid (TA) as a probe molecule. It was found that the V+N co-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays showed remarkably enhanced photocurrent and photocatalytic activity than undoped sample due to the V and N codoping.

Modeling and Testing for Joint Association Using a Genetic Random Field Model

Substantial progress has been made in identifying single genetic variants predisposing to common complex diseases. Nonetheless, the genetic etiology of human diseases remains largely unknown. Human complex diseases are likely influenced by the joint effect of a large number of genetic variants instead of a single variant. The joint analysis of multiple genetic variants considering linkage disequilibrium (LD) and potential interactions can further enhance the discovery process, leading to the identification of new disease-susceptibility genetic variants. Motivated by the recent development in spatial statistics, we propose a new statistical model based on the random field theory, referred to as a genetic random field model (GenRF), for joint association analysis with the consideration of possible gene-gene interactions and LD. Using a pseudo-likelihood approach, a GenRF test for the joint association of multiple genetic variants is developed, which has the following advantages: 1. considering complex interactions for improved performance; 2. natural dimension reduction; 3. boosting power in the presence of LD; 4. computationally efficient. Simulation studies are conducted under various scenarios. Compared with a commonly adopted kernel machine approach, SKAT, GenRF shows overall comparable performance and better performance in the presence of complex interactions. The method is further illustrated by an application to the Dallas Heart Study.

Minimum $n$-Rank Approximation via Iterative Hard Thresholding

The problem of recovering a low $n$-rank tensor is an extension of sparse recovery problem from the low dimensional space (matrix space) to the high dimensional space (tensor space) and has many applications in computer vision and graphics such as image inpainting and video inpainting. In this paper, we consider a new tensor recovery model, named as minimum $n$-rank approximation (MnRA), and propose an appropriate iterative hard thresholding algorithm with giving the upper bound of the $n$-rank in advance. The convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm is also presented. Particularly, we show that for the noiseless case, the linear convergence with rate $\frac{1}{2}$ can be obtained for the proposed algorithm under proper conditions. Additionally, combining an effective heuristic for determining $n$-rank, we can also apply the proposed algorithm to solve MnRA when $n$-rank is unknown in advance. Some preliminary numerical results on randomly generated and real low $n$-rank tensor completion problems are reported, which show the efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

The Unified Surface Ricci Flow

Ricci flow deforms the Riemannian metric proportionally to the curvature, such that the curvature evolves according to a heat diffusion process and eventually becomes constant everywhere. Ricci flow has demonstrated its great potential by solving various problems in many fields, which can be hardly handled by alternative methods so far. This work introduces the unified theoretic framework for discrete Surface Ricci Flow, including all common schemes: Thurston's Circle Packing, Tangential Circle Packing, Inversive Distance Circle Packing and Discrete Yamabe. Furthermore, this work also introduces a novel scheme, virtual radius circle packing, under the unified framework. This work gives explicit geometric interpretation to the discrete Ricci energy for all the schemes, and Hessian of the discrete Ricci energy for schemes with Euclidean back ground geometry. The unified frame work deepen our understanding to the the discrete surface Ricci flow theory, and inspired us to discover the new schemes, improved the flexibility and robustness of the algorithms, greatly simplified the implementation and improved the debugging efficiency. Experimental results shows the unified surface Ricci flow algorithms can handle general surfaces with different topologies, and is robust to meshes with different qualities, and effective for solving real problems.
