A well-balanced moving mesh discontinuous Galerkin method for the Ripa model on triangular meshes

A well-balanced moving mesh discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is proposed for the numerical solution of the Ripa model -- a generalization of the shallow water equations that accounts for effects of water temperature variations. Thermodynamic processes are important particularly in the upper layers of the ocean where the variations of sea surface temperature play a fundamental role in climate change. The well-balance property which requires numerical schemes to preserve the lake-at-rest steady state is crucial to the simulation of perturbation waves over that steady state such as waves on a lake or tsunami waves in the deep ocean. To ensure the well-balance, positivity-preserving, and high-order properties, a DG-interpolation scheme (with or without scaling positivity-preserving limiter) and special treatments pertaining to the Ripa model are employed in the transfer of both the flow variables and bottom topography from the old mesh to the new one and in the TVB limiting process. Mesh adaptivity is realized using an MMPDE moving mesh approach and a metric tensor based on an equilibrium variable and water depth. A motivation is to adapt the mesh according to both the perturbations of the lake-at-rest steady state and the water depth distribution (bottom structure). Numerical examples in one and two dimensions are presented to demonstrate the well-balance, high-order accuracy, and positivity-preserving properties of the method and its ability to capture small perturbations of the lake-at-rest steady state.

An Inverse Probability Weighted Regression Method that Accounts for Right-censoring for Causal Inference with Multiple Treatments and a Binary Outcome

Comparative effectiveness research often involves evaluating the differences in the risks of an event of interest between two or more treatments using observational data. Often, the post-treatment outcome of interest is whether the event happens within a pre-specified time window, which leads to a binary outcome. One source of bias for estimating the causal treatment effect is the presence of confounders, which are usually controlled using propensity score-based methods. An additional source of bias is right-censoring, which occurs when the information on the outcome of interest is not completely available due to dropout, study termination, or treatment switch before the event of interest. We propose an inverse probability weighted regression-based estimator that can simultaneously handle both confounding and right-censoring, calling the method CIPWR, with the letter C highlighting the censoring component. CIPWR estimates the average treatment effects by averaging the predicted outcomes obtained from a logistic regression model that is fitted using a weighted score function. The CIPWR estimator has a double robustness property such that estimation consistency can be achieved when either the model for the outcome or the models for both treatment and censoring are correctly specified. We establish the asymptotic properties of the CIPWR estimator for conducting inference, and compare its finite sample performance with that of several alternatives through simulation studies. The methods under comparison are applied to a cohort of prostate cancer patients from an insurance claims database for comparing the adverse effects of four candidate drugs for advanced stage prostate cancer.

A Survey on Dropout Methods and Experimental Verification in Recommendation

Overfitting is a common problem in machine learning, which means the model too closely fits the training data while performing poorly in the test data. Among various methods of coping with overfitting, dropout is one of the representative ways. From randomly dropping neurons to dropping neural structures, dropout has achieved great success in improving model performances. Although various dropout methods have been designed and widely applied in past years, their effectiveness, application scenarios, and contributions have not been comprehensively summarized and empirically compared by far. It is the right time to make a comprehensive survey. In this paper, we systematically review previous dropout methods and classify them into three major categories according to the stage where dropout operation is performed. Specifically, more than seventy dropout methods published in top AI conferences or journals (e.g., TKDE, KDD, TheWebConf, SIGIR) are involved. The designed taxonomy is easy to understand and capable of including new dropout methods. Then, we further discuss their application scenarios, connections, and contributions. To verify the effectiveness of distinct dropout methods, extensive experiments are conducted on recommendation scenarios with abundant heterogeneous information. Finally, we propose some open problems and potential research directions about dropout that worth to be further explored.

Robust Self-Augmentation for Named Entity Recognition with Meta Reweighting

Self-augmentation has received increasing research interest recently to improve named entity recognition (NER) performance in low-resource scenarios. Token substitution and mixup are two feasible heterogeneous self-augmentation techniques for NER that can achieve effective performance with certain specialized efforts. Noticeably, self-augmentation may introduce potentially noisy augmented data. Prior research has mainly resorted to heuristic rule-based constraints to reduce the noise for specific self-augmentation methods individually. In this paper, we revisit these two typical self-augmentation methods for NER, and propose a unified meta-reweighting strategy for them to achieve a natural integration. Our method is easily extensible, imposing little effort on a specific self-augmentation method. Experiments on different Chinese and English NER benchmarks show that our token substitution and mixup method, as well as their integration, can achieve effective performance improvement. Based on the meta-reweighting mechanism, we can enhance the advantages of the self-augmentation techniques without much extra effort.

MuCPAD: A Multi-Domain Chinese Predicate-Argument Dataset

During the past decade, neural network models have made tremendous progress on in-domain semantic role labeling (SRL). However, performance drops dramatically under the out-of-domain setting. In order to facilitate research on cross-domain SRL, this paper presents MuCPAD, a multi-domain Chinese predicate-argument dataset, which consists of 30,897 sentences and 92,051 predicates from six different domains. MuCPAD exhibits three important features. 1) Based on a frame-free annotation methodology, we avoid writing complex frames for new predicates. 2) We explicitly annotate omitted core arguments to recover more complete semantic structure, considering that omission of content words is ubiquitous in multi-domain Chinese texts. 3) We compile 53 pages of annotation guidelines and adopt strict double annotation for improving data quality. This paper describes in detail the annotation methodology and annotation process of MuCPAD, and presents in-depth data analysis. We also give benchmark results on cross-domain SRL based on MuCPAD.

MuCGEC: a Multi-Reference Multi-Source Evaluation Dataset for Chinese Grammatical Error Correction

This paper presents MuCGEC, a multi-reference multi-source evaluation dataset for Chinese Grammatical Error Correction (CGEC), consisting of 7,063 sentences collected from three Chinese-as-a-Second-Language (CSL) learner sources. Each sentence is corrected by three annotators, and their corrections are carefully reviewed by a senior annotator, resulting in 2.3 references per sentence. We conduct experiments with two mainstream CGEC models, i.e., the sequence-to-sequence model and the sequence-to-edit model, both enhanced with large pretrained language models, achieving competitive benchmark performance on previous and our datasets. We also discuss CGEC evaluation methodologies, including the effect of multiple references and using a char-based metric. Our annotation guidelines, data, and code are available at \url{https://github.com/HillZhang1999/MuCGEC}.

Graph Convolutional Network Based Semi-Supervised Learning on Multi-Speaker Meeting Data

Unsupervised clustering on speakers is becoming increasingly important for its potential uses in semi-supervised learning. In reality, we are often presented with enormous amounts of unlabeled data from multi-party meetings and discussions. An effective unsupervised clustering approach would allow us to significantly increase the amount of training data without additional costs for annotations. Recently, methods based on graph convolutional networks (GCN) have received growing attention for unsupervised clustering, as these methods exploit the connectivity patterns between nodes to improve learning performance. In this work, we present a GCN-based approach for semi-supervised learning. Given a pre-trained embedding extractor, a graph convolutional network is trained on the labeled data and clusters unlabeled data with "pseudo-labels". We present a self-correcting training mechanism that iteratively runs the cluster-train-correct process on pseudo-labels. We show that this proposed approach effectively uses unlabeled data and improves speaker recognition accuracy.

BLISS: Robust Sequence-to-Sequence Learning via Self-Supervised Input Representation

Data augmentations (DA) are the cores to achieving robust sequence-to-sequence learning on various natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, most of the DA approaches force the decoder to make predictions conditioned on the perturbed input representation, underutilizing supervised information provided by perturbed input. In this work, we propose a framework-level robust sequence-to-sequence learning approach, named BLISS, via self-supervised input representation, which has the great potential to complement the data-level augmentation approaches. The key idea is to supervise the sequence-to-sequence framework with both the \textit{supervised} ("input$\rightarrow$output") and \textit{self-supervised} ("perturbed input$\rightarrow$input") information. We conduct comprehensive experiments to validate the effectiveness of BLISS on various tasks, including machine translation, grammatical error correction, and text summarization. The results show that BLISS outperforms significantly the vanilla Transformer and consistently works well across tasks than the other five contrastive baselines. Extensive analyses reveal that BLISS learns robust representations and rich linguistic knowledge, confirming our claim. Source code will be released upon publication.

Stochastic Variance Reduced Ensemble Adversarial Attack for Boosting the Adversarial Transferability

The black-box adversarial attack has attracted impressive attention for its practical use in the field of deep learning security. Meanwhile, it is very challenging as there is no access to the network architecture or internal weights of the target model. Based on the hypothesis that if an example remains adversarial for multiple models, then it is more likely to transfer the attack capability to other models, the ensemble-based adversarial attack methods are efficient and widely used for black-box attacks. However, ways of ensemble attack are rather less investigated, and existing ensemble attacks simply fuse the outputs of all the models evenly. In this work, we treat the iterative ensemble attack as a stochastic gradient descent optimization process, in which the variance of the gradients on different models may lead to poor local optima. To this end, we propose a novel attack method called the stochastic variance reduced ensemble (SVRE) attack, which could reduce the gradient variance of the ensemble models and take full advantage of the ensemble attack. Empirical results on the standard ImageNet dataset demonstrate that the proposed method could boost the adversarial transferability and outperforms existing ensemble attacks significantly. Code is available at https://github.com/JHL-HUST/SVRE.

Identifying Chinese Opinion Expressions with Extremely-Noisy Crowdsourcing Annotations

Recent works of opinion expression identification (OEI) rely heavily on the quality and scale of the manually-constructed training corpus, which could be extremely difficult to satisfy. Crowdsourcing is one practical solution for this problem, aiming to create a large-scale but quality-unguaranteed corpus. In this work, we investigate Chinese OEI with extremely-noisy crowdsourcing annotations, constructing a dataset at a very low cost. Following zhang et al. (2021), we train the annotator-adapter model by regarding all annotations as gold-standard in terms of crowd annotators, and test the model by using a synthetic expert, which is a mixture of all annotators. As this annotator-mixture for testing is never modeled explicitly in the training phase, we propose to generate synthetic training samples by a pertinent mixup strategy to make the training and testing highly consistent. The simulation experiments on our constructed dataset show that crowdsourcing is highly promising for OEI, and our proposed annotator-mixup can further enhance the crowdsourcing modeling.

In this paper, the first family of conforming finite element divdiv complexes on cuboid grids in three dimensions is constructed. Besides, a new family of conforming finite element divdiv complexes with enhanced smoothness on tetrahedral grids is presented. These complexes are exact in the sense that the range of each discrete map is the kernel space of the succeeding one.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in kagome single crystal Pd3P2S8

Kagome lattice offers unique opportunities for the exploration of unusual quantum states of correlated electrons. Here, we report on the observation of superconductivity in a kagome single crystal Pd3P2S8 when a semiconducting to metallic transition is driven by pressure. High-pressure resistance measurements show that the metallization and superconductivity are simultaneously observed at about 11 GPa. With increasing pressure, the superconducting critical temperature Tc is monotonously enhanced from 2.6 K to a maximum 7.7 K at ~52 GPa. Interestingly, superconductivity retains when the pressure is fully released. Synchrotron XRD and Raman experiments consistently evidence that the emergence of superconductivity is accompanied with an amorphization and the retainability of superconductivity upon decompression can be attributed to the irreversibility of the amorphization.

Bridging Pre-trained Language Models and Hand-crafted Features for Unsupervised POS Tagging

In recent years, large-scale pre-trained language models (PLMs) have made extraordinary progress in most NLP tasks. But, in the unsupervised POS tagging task, works utilizing PLMs are few and fail to achieve state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. The recent SOTA performance is yielded by a Guassian HMM variant proposed by He et al. (2018). However, as a generative model, HMM makes very strong independence assumptions, making it very challenging to incorporate contexualized word representations from PLMs. In this work, we for the first time propose a neural conditional random field autoencoder (CRF-AE) model for unsupervised POS tagging. The discriminative encoder of CRF-AE can straightforwardly incorporate ELMo word representations. Moreover, inspired by feature-rich HMM, we reintroduce hand-crafted features into the decoder of CRF-AE. Finally, experiments clearly show that our model outperforms previous state-of-the-art models by a large margin on Penn Treebank and multilingual Universal Dependencies treebank v2.0.

Confidence Based Bidirectional Global Context Aware Training Framework for Neural Machine Translation

Most dominant neural machine translation (NMT) models are restricted to make predictions only according to the local context of preceding words in a left-to-right manner. Although many previous studies try to incorporate global information into NMT models, there still exist limitations on how to effectively exploit bidirectional global context. In this paper, we propose a Confidence Based Bidirectional Global Context Aware (CBBGCA) training framework for NMT, where the NMT model is jointly trained with an auxiliary conditional masked language model (CMLM). The training consists of two stages: (1) multi-task joint training; (2) confidence based knowledge distillation. At the first stage, by sharing encoder parameters, the NMT model is additionally supervised by the signal from the CMLM decoder that contains bidirectional global contexts. Moreover, at the second stage, using the CMLM as teacher, we further pertinently incorporate bidirectional global context to the NMT model on its unconfidently-predicted target words via knowledge distillation. Experimental results show that our proposed CBBGCA training framework significantly improves the NMT model by +1.02, +1.30 and +0.57 BLEU scores on three large-scale translation datasets, namely WMT'14 English-to-German, WMT'19 Chinese-to-English and WMT'14 English-to-French, respectively.

ODE Transformer: An Ordinary Differential Equation-Inspired Model for Sequence Generation

Residual networks are an Euler discretization of solutions to Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE). This paper explores a deeper relationship between Transformer and numerical ODE methods. We first show that a residual block of layers in Transformer can be described as a higher-order solution to ODE. Inspired by this, we design a new architecture, {\it ODE Transformer}, which is analogous to the Runge-Kutta method that is well motivated in ODE. As a natural extension to Transformer, ODE Transformer is easy to implement and efficient to use. Experimental results on the large-scale machine translation, abstractive summarization, and grammar error correction tasks demonstrate the high genericity of ODE Transformer. It can gain large improvements in model performance over strong baselines (e.g., 30.77 and 44.11 BLEU scores on the WMT'14 English-German and English-French benchmarks) at a slight cost in inference efficiency.

Towards Unifying the Label Space for Aspect- and Sentence-based Sentiment Analysis

The aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) is a fine-grained task that aims to determine the sentiment polarity towards targeted aspect terms occurring in the sentence. The development of the ABSA task is very much hindered by the lack of annotated data. To tackle this, the prior works have studied the possibility of utilizing the sentiment analysis (SA) datasets to assist in training the ABSA model, primarily via pretraining or multi-task learning. In this article, we follow this line, and for the first time, we manage to apply the Pseudo-Label (PL) method to merge the two homogeneous tasks. While it seems straightforward to use generated pseudo labels to handle this case of label granularity unification for two highly related tasks, we identify its major challenge in this paper and propose a novel framework, dubbed as Dual-granularity Pseudo Labeling (DPL). Further, similar to PL, we regard the DPL as a general framework capable of combining other prior methods in the literature. Through extensive experiments, DPL has achieved state-of-the-art performance on standard benchmarks surpassing the prior work significantly.

R-PointHop: A Green, Accurate, and Unsupervised Point Cloud Registration Method

Inspired by the recent PointHop classification method, an unsupervised 3D point cloud registration method, called R-PointHop, is proposed in this work. R-PointHop first determines a local reference frame (LRF) for every point using its nearest neighbors and finds local attributes. Next, R-PointHop obtains local-to-global hierarchical features by point downsampling, neighborhood expansion, attribute construction and dimensionality reduction steps. Thus, point correspondences are built in hierarchical feature space using the nearest neighbor rule. Afterwards, a subset of salient points with good correspondence is selected to estimate the 3D transformation. The use of the LRF allows for invariance of the hierarchical features of points with respect to rotation and translation, thus making R-PointHop more robust at building point correspondence, even when the rotation angles are large. Experiments are conducted on the 3DMatch, ModelNet40, and Stanford Bunny datasets, which demonstrate the effectiveness of R-PointHop for 3D point cloud registration. R-PointHop's model size and training time are an order of magnitude smaller than those of deep learning methods, and its registration errors are smaller, making it a green and accurate solution. Our codes are available on GitHub.

Cross-Layer Optimization: Joint User Scheduling and Beamforming Design With QoS Support in Joint Transmission Networks

User scheduling and beamforming design are two crucial yet coupled topics for wireless communication systems. They are usually optimized separately with conventional optimization methods. In this paper, a novel cross-layer optimization problem is considered, namely, the user scheduling and beamforming are jointly discussed subjecting to the requirement of per-user quality of service (QoS) and the maximum allowable transmit power for multicell multiuser joint transmission networks. To achieve the goal, a mixed discrete-continue variables combinational optimization problem is investigated with aiming at maximizing the sum rate of the communication system. To circumvent the original non-convex problem with dynamic solution space, we first transform it into a 0-1 integer and continue variables optimization problem, and then obtain a tractable form with continuous variables by exploiting the characteristics of 0-1 constraint. Finally, the scheduled users and the optimized beamforming vectors are simultaneously calculated by an alternating optimization algorithm. We also theoretically prove that the base stations allocate zero power to the unscheduled users. Furthermore, two heuristic optimization algorithms are proposed respectively based on brute-force search and greedy search. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our proposed methods, and the optimization approach gets relatively balanced results compared with the other two approaches.
