Cross-phase modulation instability in mode-locked laser based on reduced graphene oxide

Cross-phase modulation instability (XPMI) is experimentally observed in a fiber ring cavity with net normal dispersion and mode-locked by long fiber taper. The taper is deposited with reduced graphene oxide, which can decrease the threshold of XPMI due to the enhanced nonlinearity realized by 8 mm evanescent field interaction length and strong mode confinement. Experimental results indicate that the phase matching conditions in two polarization directions are different, and sidebands with different intensities are generated. This phase matching condition can be satisfied even the polarization state of the laser varies greatly under different pump strengths.

Systematic study of shell gaps in nuclei

The nucleon separation energies and shell gaps in nuclei over the whole nuclear chart are systematically studied with eight global nuclear mass models. For unmeasured neutron-rich and super-heavy regions, the uncertainty of the predictions from these different mass models is still large. The latest version (WS4) of the Weizsäcker-Skyrme mass formula, in which the isospin dependence of model parameters is introduced into the macroscopic-microscopic approach inspired by the Skyrme energy-density functional, is found to be the most accurate one in the descriptions of nuclear masses, separation energies and shell gaps. Based on the predicted shell gaps in nuclei, the possible magic numbers in super-heavy nuclei region are investigated. In addition to the shell closures at $N=184, Z=114$, the sub-shell closures at around $N=178, Z=120$ could also play a role for the stability of super-heavy nuclei.

Surface diffuseness correction in global mass formula

By taking into account the surface diffuseness correction for unstable nuclei, the accuracy of the macroscopic-microscopic mass formula is further improved. The rms deviation with respect to essentially all the available mass data falls to 298 keV, crossing the 0.3 MeV accuracy threshold for the first time within the mean-field framework. Considering the surface effect of the symmetry potential which plays an important role in the evolution of the "neutron skin" toward the "neutron halo" of nuclei approaching the neutron drip line, we obtain an optimal value of the symmetry energy coefficient J=30.16 MeV. With an accuracy of 258 keV for all the available neutron separation energies and of 237 keV for the alpha-decay Q-values of super-heavy nuclei, the proposed mass formula is particularly important not only for the reliable description of the r-process of nucleosynthesis but also for the study of the synthesis of super-heavy nuclei.

Vector rectangular-shape laser based on reduced graphene oxide interacting with long fiber taper

A vector dual-wavelength rectangular-shape laser (RSL) based on a long fiber taper deposited with reduced graphene oxide is proposed, where the nonlinearity is enhanced due to large evanescent-field-interacting length and strong field confinement of a 8 mm fiber taper with a waist diameter of 4 micronmeters. Graphene flakes are deposited uniformly on the taper waist with light pressure effect, so this structure guarantees both excellent saturable absorption and high nonlinearity. The RSL with a repetition rate of 7.9 MHz exhibits fast polarization switching in two orthogonal polarization directions, and the temporal and spectral characteristics are investigated. The results suggest that the long taper-based graphene structure is an efficient choice for nonlinear devices.

Crystal growth, transport phenomena and two gap superconductivity in the mixed alkali metal $(K_{1-z}Na_z)_{x}Fe_{2-y}Se_2$ iron selenide

Using the self-flux technique we grew superconducting $(K_{1-z}Na_z)_{x}Fe_{2-y}Se_2$ (z = 0.3) single crystals. The EDX mapping revealed the uniform elements distribution on the crystal surface while the XRD measurements indicate that the crystals are compositionally inhomogenous on nanoscale. The physical properties of the as-prepared sample are characterized by electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements. Resistivity measurements show the onset of the superconducting transition at 33 K and zero resistivity at 31.7 K. The large upper critical field $H_{c2}$(0) was estimated as high as about of 140 T for the in-plane field and 38 T for the out-of-plane field. The anisotropy of $H_{c2}^{ab}(0)/H_{c2}^{c}(0)$ and coherence lengths $ξ^{ab}(0)/ξ^{c}$(0) was found to be around 3.7. The pioneer studies by multiple Andreev reflections effect spectroscopy ("break-junction" technique) revealed the presence of two anisotropic superconducting gaps $Δ_L\,=\,(9.3\pm1.5)\,meV$, $Δ_S\,=\,(1.9\pm0.4)\,meV$, and provided measuring of the $Δ_L$(T) temperature dependence. The BCS-ratio for the large gap $2Δ_L/k_BT_c^{bulk}\,\approx\,6.3$ points to a strong electron-boson coupling in the "driving" condensate characterized by $Δ_L$ order parameter.

Sensitive dependence of isotope and isobar distribution of limiting temperatures on symmetry energy

The mass, isotope, and isobar distributions of limiting temperatures for finite nuclei are investigated by using a thermodynamics approach together with the Skyrme energy density functional. The relationship between the width of the isotope (isobar) distribution of limiting temperatures and the stiffness of the density dependence of the symmetry energy clearly is observed. The nuclear symmetry energy with smaller slope parameter $L_{\rm{sym}}$ causes a wider the isotope (isobar) distribution of limiting temperatures. The widths of the isotope (isobar) distributions of limiting temperatures could be useful observables for exploring the information of the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy at finite temperatures.

Emerging Weak Localization Effects on Topological Insulator-Insulating Ferromagnet (Bi_2Se_3-EuS) Interface

Thin films of topological insulator Bi_2Se_3 were deposited directly on insulating ferromagnetic EuS. Unusual negative magnetoresistance was observed near the zero field below the Curie temperature (T_C), resembling the weak localization effect; whereas the usual positive magnetoresistance was recovered above T_C. Such negative magnetoresistance was only observed for Bi_2Se_3 layers thinner than t~4nm, when its top and bottom surfaces are coupled. These results provide evidence for a proximity effect between a topological insulator and an insulating ferromagnet, laying the foundation for future realization of the half-integer quantized anomalous Hall effect in three-dimensional topological insulators.

Almost Optimal Channel Access in Multi-Hop Networks With Unknown Channel Variables

We consider distributed channel access in multi-hop cognitive radio networks. Previous works on opportunistic channel access using multi-armed bandits (MAB) mainly focus on single-hop networks that assume complete conflicts among all secondary users. In the multi-hop multi-channel network settings studied here, there is more general competition among different communication pairs. We formulate the problem as a linearly combinatorial MAB problem that involves a maximum weighted independent set (MWIS) problem with unknown weights which need to learn. Existing methods for MAB where each of $N$ nodes chooses from $M$ channels have exponential time and space complexity $O(M^N)$, and poor theoretical guarantee on throughput performance. We propose a distributed channel access algorithm that can achieve $1/ρ$ of the optimum averaged throughput where each node has communication complexity $O(r^2+D)$ and space complexity $O(m)$ in the learning process, and time complexity $O(D m^{ρ^r})$ in strategy decision process for an arbitrary wireless network. Here $ρ=1+ε$ is the approximation ratio to MWIS for a local $r$-hop network with $m<N$ nodes, and $D$ is the number of mini-rounds inside each round of strategy decision. For randomly located networks with an average degree $d$, the time complexity is $O(d^{ρ^r})$.

Suppressing phase decoherence of a single atom qubit with CPMG sequence

We experimentally demonstrate the strong suppression of dephasing of a qubit stored in a single \textsuperscript{87}Rb atom in an optical dipole trap by using Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill(CPMG) pulse sequences. Regarded as a repetition of spin echo, CPMG sequence is an optimal choice for suppressing both inhomogeneous and homogeneous phase decoherence mechanisms. In the trap with 830 nm wavelength and 0.7 mK potential depth, the spin relaxation time of single atoms is showed to be 830.8 ms. We obtain the reversible inhomogeneous dephasing time of $T_{2}^{\ast}$=1.4 ms. The homogeneous dephasing time is $T_{2}^{\prime}$ =102.7 ms in the spin echo process, by employing CPMG sequence with pulse number n = 6 the homogeneous dephasing is further suppressed by a factor of 3, and its corresponding coherence time is extended to $T_{2}^{\prime}$=304.5 ms.

Revisiting $Kπ$ puzzle in the pQCD factorization approach

In this paper, we calculated the branching ratios and direct CP violation of the four $B\to Kπ$ decays with the inclusion of all currently known next-to-leading order (NLO) contributions by employing the perturbative QCD (pQCD) factorization approach. We found that (a) Besides the 10% enhancement from the NLO vertex corrections, the quark-loops and magnetic penguins, the NLO contributions to the form factors can provide an additional $\sim 15%$ enhancement to the branching ratios, and lead to a very good agreement with the data; (b) The NLO pQCD predictions are $\acp^{dir}(B^0\to K^+π^-)=(-6.5\pm 3.1)%$ and $\acp^{dir}(B^+\to K^+ π^0)=(2.2\pm 2.0)%$, become well consistent with the data due to the inclusion of the NLO contributions.

Semileptonic decays $B/B_s \to (η,\etar, G)(l^+l^-,l\barν,ν\barν)$ in the perturbative QCD approach beyond the leading order

In this paper we make a systematic study of the semileptonic decays $B/B_s \to (η,\etar, G)(l^+l^-,l\barν,ν\barν)$ by employing the perturbative QCD (pQCD) factorization approach. The next-to-leading-order (NLO) contributions to the relevant form factors are included, and the ordinary $η$-$\etar$ mixing scheme and the $η$-$\etar$-$G$ mixing scheme are considered separately, where $G$ denotes a pseudoscalar glueball. The numerical results and the phenomenological analysis indicate that (a) the NLO contributions to the relevant form factors provide 25% enhancement to the leading-order pQCD predictions for the branching ratios $Br(B^-\to η^{(')} l^-\barν_l)$, leading to a good agreement between the predictions and the data; (b) for all considered decays, the pQCD results are basically consistent with those from other different theoretical models; (c) the pQCD predictions in the two considered mixing schemes agree well with each other within theoretical errors. The outcomes presented here can be tested by LHCb and forthcoming Super-$B$ experiments.

Link Scheduling for Throughput Maximization in Multihop Wireless Networks Under Physical Interference

We consider the problem of link scheduling for throughput maximization in multihop wireless networks. Majority of previous methods are restricted to graph-based interference models. In this paper we study the link scheduling problem using a more realistic physical interference model. Through some key observations about this model, we develop efficient link scheduling algorithms by exploiting the intrinsic connections between the physical interference model and the graph-based interference model. For one variant of the problem where each node can dynamically adjust its transmission power, we design a scheduling method with O(g(E)) approximation to the optimal throughput capacity where g(E) denotes length diversity. For the other variant where each node has a fixed but possible different transmission powers for different nodes, we design a method with O(g(E))-approximation ratio when the transmission powers of all nodes are within a constant factor of each other, and in general with an approximation ratio of O(g(E)logρ) where logρis power diversity. We further prove that our algorithm for fixed transmission power case retains O(g(E)) approximation for any length-monotone, sub-linear fixed power setting. Furthermore, all these approximation factors are independent of network size.

Elliptic Curves in Moduli Space of Stable Bundles of Rank 3

Let $M$ be the moduli space of rank 3 stable bundles with fixed determinant of degree 1 on a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 2$. When $C$ is generic, we show that any essential elliptic curve on $M$ has degree (respect to anti-canonical divisor $-K_{M}$) at least 6, and we give a complete classification for elliptic curves of degree 6, which is not in conformity with Sun's Conjecture. Moreover, if $g>12$, we show that any elliptic curve passing through the generic point of $M$ has degree at least 18.

Nuclear symmetry energy from the Fermi-energy difference in nuclei

The neutron-proton Fermi-energy difference and the correlation to nucleon separation energies for some magic nuclei are investigated with the Skyrme energy density functionals and nuclear masses, with which the nuclear symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities is constrained from 54 Skyrme parameter sets. The extracted nuclear symmetry energy at sub-saturation density of 0.11 fm$^{-3}$ is 26.2 $\pm$ 1.0 MeV with 1.5 $σ$ uncertainty. By further combining the neutron-skin thickness of 208Pb, ten Skyrme forces with slope parameter of 28<L<65 are selected for the description of the symmetry energy around saturation densities.

Throughput Optimizing Localized Link Scheduling for Multihop Wireless Networks Under Physical Interference Model

We study throughput-optimum localized link scheduling in wireless networks. The majority of results on link scheduling assume binary interference models that simplify interference constraints in actual wireless communication. While the physical interference model reflects the physical reality more precisely, the problem becomes notoriously harder under the physical interference model. There have been just a few existing results on link scheduling under the physical interference model, and even fewer on more practical distributed or localized scheduling. In this paper, we tackle the challenges of localized link scheduling posed by the complex physical interference constraints. By cooperating the partition and shifting strategies into the pick-and-compare scheme, we present a class of localized scheduling algorithms with provable throughput guarantee subject to physical interference constraints. The algorithm in the linear power setting is the first localized algorithm that achieves at least a constant fraction of the optimal capacity region subject to physical interference constraints. The algorithm in the uniform power setting is the first localized algorithm with a logarithmic approximation ratio to the optimal solution. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate correctness and performance efficiency of our algorithms.

An improved nuclear mass formula: WS3

We introduce a global nuclear mass formula which is based on the macroscopic-microscopic method, the Skyrme energy-density functional and the isospin symmetry in nuclear physics. The rms deviation with respect to 2149 known nuclear masses falls to 336 keV, and the rms deviations from 1988 neutron separation energies and α-decay energies of 46 super-heavy nuclei are significantly reduced to 286 and 248 keV, respectively. The predictive power of the mass formula for describing new measured masses in GSI and those in AME2011 is excellent. In addition, we introduce an efficient and powerful systematic method, radial basis function approach, for further improving the accuracy and predictive power of global nuclear mass models.

High Quality Ultrathin Bi2Se3 Films on CaF2 and CaF2/Si by Molecular Beam Epitaxy with a Radio Frequency Cracker Cell

Here we report a method to fabricate high quality Bi2Se3 thin films using molecular beam epitaxy with a radio frequency cracker cell as an atomic selenium source. With rates close to exact stoichiometry, optimal layer-by-layer growth of high quality Bi2Se3 thin films with smooth surfaces, has been achieved on CaF2(111) substrates and Si(111) substrates with a thin CaF2 buffer layer(CaF2/Si). Transport measurements show a characteristic weak antilocalization mangnetoresistance, with emergence of weak localization in the ultrathin film limit. Quantum Oscillations attributed to the topological surface states have been observed, including in films on CaF2/Si.

Small rational curves on the moduli space of stable bundles

For a smooth projective curve C with genus g >= 2 and a degree 1 line bundle L on C, let M := SU_{C}(r;L) be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank r and with the fixed determinant L. In this paper, we study the small rational curves on M and estimate the codimension of the locus of the small rational curves. In particular, we determine all small rational curves when r = 3.
