A Global Two-stage Algorithm for Non-convex Penalized High-dimensional Linear Regression Problems

By the asymptotic oracle property, non-convex penalties represented by minimax concave penalty (MCP) and smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) have attracted much attentions in high-dimensional data analysis, and have been widely used in signal processing, image restoration, matrix estimation, etc. However, in view of their non-convex and non-smooth characteristics, they are computationally challenging. Almost all existing algorithms converge locally, and the proper selection of initial values is crucial. Therefore, in actual operation, they often combine a warm-starting technique to meet the rigid requirement that the initial value must be sufficiently close to the optimal solution of the corresponding problem. In this paper, based on the DC (difference of convex functions) property of MCP and SCAD penalties, we aim to design a global two-stage algorithm for the high-dimensional least squares linear regression problems. A key idea for making the proposed algorithm to be efficient is to use the primal dual active set with continuation (PDASC) method, which is equivalent to the semi-smooth Newton (SSN) method, to solve the corresponding sub-problems. Theoretically, we not only prove the global convergence of the proposed algorithm, but also verify that the generated iterative sequence converges to a d-stationary point. In terms of computational performance, the abundant research of simulation and real data show that the algorithm in this paper is superior to the latest SSN method and the classic coordinate descent (CD) algorithm for solving non-convex penalized high-dimensional linear regression problems.

Rep Works in Speaker Verification

Multi-branch convolutional neural network architecture has raised lots of attention in speaker verification since the aggregation of multiple parallel branches can significantly improve performance. However, this design is not efficient enough during the inference time due to the increase of model parameters and extra operations. In this paper, we present a new multi-branch network architecture RepSPKNet that uses a re-parameterization technique. With this technique, our backbone model contains an efficient VGG-like inference state while its training state is a complicated multi-branch structure. We first introduce the specific structure of RepVGG into speaker verification and propose several variants of this structure. The performance is evaluated on VoxCeleb-based test sets. We demonstrate that both the branch diversity and the branch capacity play important roles in RepSPKNet designing. Our RepSPKNet achieves state-of-the-art performance with a 1.5982% EER and a 0.1374 minDCF on VoxCeleb1-H.

Multi-query multi-head attention pooling and Inter-topK penalty for speaker verification

This paper describes the multi-query multi-head attention (MQMHA) pooling and inter-topK penalty methods which were first proposed in our submitted system description for VoxCeleb speaker recognition challenge (VoxSRC) 2021. Most multi-head attention pooling mechanisms either attend to the whole feature through multiple heads or attend to several split parts of the whole feature. Our proposed MQMHA combines both these two mechanisms and gain more diversified information. The margin-based softmax loss functions are commonly adopted to obtain discriminative speaker representations. To further enhance the inter-class discriminability, we propose a method that adds an extra inter-topK penalty on some confused speakers. By adopting both the MQMHA and inter-topK penalty, we achieved state-of-the-art performance in all of the public VoxCeleb test sets.

Poformer: A simple pooling transformer for speaker verification

Most recent speaker verification systems are based on extracting speaker embeddings using a deep neural network. The pooling layer in the network aims to aggregate frame-level features extracted by the backbone. In this paper, we propose a new transformer based pooling structure called PoFormer to enhance the ability of the pooling layer to capture information along the whole time axis. Different from previous works that apply attention mechanism in a simple way or implement the multi-head mechanism in serial instead of in parallel, PoFormer follows the initial transformer structure with some minor modifications like a positional encoding generator, drop path and LayerScale to make the training procedure more stable and to prevent overfitting. Evaluated on various datasets, PoFormer outperforms the existing pooling system with at least a 13.00% improvement in EER and a 9.12% improvement in minDCF.

DeepGOMIMO: Deep Learning-Aided Generalized Optical MIMO with CSI-Free Blind Detection

Generalized optical multiple-input multiple-output (GOMIMO) techniques have been recently shown to be promising for high-speed optical wireless communication (OWC) systems. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning-aided GOMIMO (DeepGOMIMO) framework for GOMIMO systems, where channel state information (CSI)-free blind detection can be enabled by employing a specially designed deep neural network (DNN)-based MIMO detector. The CSI-free blind DNN detector mainly consists of two modules: one is the pre-processing module which is designed to address both the path loss and channel crosstalk issues caused by MIMO transmission, and the other is the feed-forward DNN module which is used for joint detection of spatial and constellation information by learning the statistics of both the input signal and the additive noise. Our simulation results clearly verify that, in a typical indoor 4 $\times$ 4 MIMO-OWC system using both generalized optical spatial modulation (GOSM) and generalized optical spatial multiplexing (GOSMP) with unipolar non-zero 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation (4-PAM) modulation, the proposed CSI-free blind DNN detector achieves near the same bit error rate (BER) performance as the optimal joint maximum-likelihood (ML) detector, but with much reduced computational complexity. Moreover, since the CSI-free blind DNN detector does not require instantaneous channel estimation to obtain accurate CSI, it enjoys the unique advantages of improved achievable data rate and reduced communication time delay in comparison to the CSI-based zero-forcing DNN (ZF-DNN) detector.

Multiple Energy Scales and Anisotropic Energy Gap in the Charge-Density-Wave Phase of Kagome Superconductor CsV3Sb5

Kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) exhibit superconductivity at 0.9-2.5 K and charge-density wave (CDW) at 78-103 K. Key electronic states associated with the CDW and superconductivity remain elusive. Here, we investigate low-energy excitations of CsV3Sb5 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found an energy gap of 70-100 meV at the Dirac-crossing points of linearly dispersive bands, pointing to an importance of spin-orbit coupling. We also found a signature of strongly Fermi-surface and momentum-dependent CDW gap characterized by the larger energy gap of maximally 70 meV for a band forming a saddle point around the M point, the smaller (0-18 meV) gap for a band forming massive Dirac cones, and a zero gap at the Gamma-centered electron pocket. The observed highly anisotropic CDW gap which is enhanced around the M point signifies an importance of scattering channel connecting the saddle points, laying foundation for understanding the nature of CDW and superconductivity in AV3Sb5.

Observation of unconventional spin polarization induced spin orbit torque in L1$_2$-ordered antiferromagnetic Mn$_3$Pt thin films

Non-collinear antiferromagnets exhibits richer magneto-transport properties due to the topologically nontrivial spin structure they possess compared to conventional nonmagnetic materials, which allows us to manipulate the charge-spin conversion more freely by taking advantage of the chirality. In this work, we explore the unconventional spin orbit torque of L1$_2$-ordered Mn$_3$Pt with a triangular spin structure. We observed an unconventional spin orbit torque along the $\mathbf{x}$-direction for the (001)-oriented L1$_2$ Mn$_3$Pt, and found that it has a unique sign reversal behavior relative to the crystalline orientation. This generation of unconventional spin orbit torque for L1$_2$-ordered Mn$_3$Pt can be interpreted as stemming from the magnetic spin Hall effect. This report help clarify the correlation between the topologically nontrivial spin structure and charge-spin conversion in non-collinear antiferromagnets.

Coordinate Descent for MCP/SCAD Penalized Least Squares Converges Linearly

Recovering sparse signals from observed data is an important topic in signal/imaging processing, statistics and machine learning. Nonconvex penalized least squares have been attracted a lot of attentions since they enjoy nice statistical properties. Computationally, coordinate descent (CD) is a workhorse for minimizing the nonconvex penalized least squares criterion due to its simplicity and scalability. In this work, we prove the linear convergence rate to CD for solving MCP/SCAD penalized least squares problems.

High fidelity entanglement of neutral atoms via a Rydberg-mediated single-modulated-pulse controlled-PHASE gate

Neutral atom platform has become an attractive choice to study the science of quantum information and quantum simulation, where intense efforts have been devoted to the entangling processes between individual atoms. For the development of this area, two-qubit controlled-PHASE gate via Rydberg blockade is one of the most essential elements. Recent theoretical studies have suggested the advantages of introducing non-trivial waveform modulation into the gate protocol, which is anticipated to improve its performance towards the next stage. We report our recent experimental results in realizing a two-qubit controlled-PHASE($C_Z$) gate via off-resonant modulated driving(ORMD) embedded in two-photon transition for Rb atoms. It relies upon a single modulated driving pulse with a carefully calculated smooth waveform to gain the appropriate phase accumulations required by the two-qubit gate. Combining this $C_Z$ gate with global microwave pulses, two-atom entanglement is generated with the raw fidelity of 0.945(6). Accounting for state preparation and measurement (SPAM) errors, we extract the entanglement operation fidelity to be 0.980(7). Our work features completing the $C_Z$ gate operation within a single pulse to avoid shelved Rydberg population, thus demonstrate another promising route for realizing high-fidelity two-qubit gate for neutral atom platform.

Paired Ru-O-Mo ensemble for efficient and stable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is a promising electrochemical energy conversion strategy. Ruthenium (Ru) is an efficient catalyst with a desirable cost for HER, however, the sluggish H2O dissociation process, due to the low H2O adsorption on its surface, currently hampers the performances of this catalyst in alkaline HER. Herein, we demonstrate that the H2O adsorption improves significantly by the construction of Ru-O-Mo sites. We prepared Ru/MoO2 catalysts with Ru-O-Mo sites through a facile thermal treatment process and assessed the creation of Ru-O-Mo interfaces by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). By using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and H2O adsorption tests, we proved Ru-O-Mo sites have tenfold stronger H2O adsorption ability than that of Ru catalyst. The catalysts with Ru-O-Mo sites exhibited a state-of-the-art overpotential of 16 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte, demonstrating a threefold reduction than the previous bests of Ru (59 mV) and commercial Pt (31 mV) catalysts. We proved the stability of these performances over 40 hours without decline. These results could open a new path for designing efficient and stable catalysts.

Tuning the intermediate reaction barriers by CuPd catalyst to improve the selectivity of electroreduction CO2 to C2 products

Electrochemical CO2 reduction is a promising strategy for utilization of CO2 and intermittent excess electricity. Cu is the only single-metal catalyst that can electrochemically convert CO2 to multi-carbon products. However, Cu has an undesirable selectivity and activity for C2 products, due to its insufficient amount of CO* for C-C coupling. Considering the strong CO2 adsorption and ultra-fast reaction kinetics of CO* formation on Pd, an intimate CuPd(100) interface was designed to lower the intermediate reaction barriers and then improve the efficiency of C2 products. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the CuPd(100) interface has enhanced CO2 adsorption and decreased CO2* hydrogenation energy barrier, which are beneficial for C-C coupling. The potential-determining step (PDS) barrier of CO2 to C2 products on CuPd(100) interface is 0.61 eV, which is lower than that on Cu(100) (0.72 eV). Motivated by the DFT calculation, the CuPd(100) interface catalyst was prepared by a facile chemical solution method and demonstrated by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The CO2 temperature programmed desorption (CO2-TPD) and gas sensor experiments proved the enhancements of CO2 adsorption and CO2* hydrogenation abilities on CuPd(100) interface catalyst. As a result, the obtained CuPd(100) interface catalyst exhibits a C2 Faradaic efficiency of 50.3 (+/-) 1.2% at -1.4 VRHE in 0.1 M KHCO3, which is 2.1 times higher than 23.6(+/-) 1.5% of Cu catalyst. This work provides a rational design of Cu-based electrocatalyst for multi-carbon products by fine-tuning the intermediate reaction barriers.

Fermi level equilibration at the metal-molecule interface in plasmonic systems

We highlight a new metal-molecule charge transfer process by tuning the Fermi energy of plasmonic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in-situ. The strong adsorption of halide ions upshifts the Fermi level of AgNPs by up to ~0.3 eV in the order: Cl-<Br-<I-, favoring the spontaneous charge transfer to aligned molecular acceptor orbitals until charge neutrality across the interface is achieved. By carefully quantifying experimentally and theoretically the Fermi level upshift, we show for the first time that this effect is comparable in energy to different plasmonic effects such as the plasmoelectric effect or hot-carriers production. Moreover, by monitoring in-situ the adsorption dynamic of halide ions in different AgNP-molecule systems, we show for the first time that the catalytic role of halide ions in plasmonic nanostructures depends on the surface affinity of halide ions compared to that of the target molecule.

Automated Allocation of Detention Rooms Based on Inverse Graph Partitioning

Room allocation is a challenging task in detention centers since lots of related people need to be held separately with limited rooms. It is extremely difficult and risky to allocate rooms manually, especially for organized crime groups with close connections. To tackle this problem, we develop an intelligent room allocation system for detention centers to provide optimized room allocation schemes automatically. We first formalize the detention room allocation problem as inverse graph partitioning, which can measure the quality of room allocation schemes. Then, we propose two heuristic algorithms to achieve the global optimization and local optimization of detention room allocation. Experiment results on real-world datasets show that the proposed algorithms significantly outperform manual allocation and suggest that the system is of great practical application value.

Adaptive Two-Layer ReLU Neural Network: II. Ritz Approximation to Elliptic PDEs

In this paper, we study adaptive neuron enhancement (ANE) method for solving self-adjoint second-order elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs). The ANE method is a self-adaptive method generating a two-layer spline NN and a numerical integration mesh such that the approximation accuracy is within the prescribed tolerance. Moreover, the ANE method provides a natural process for obtaining a good initialization which is crucial for training nonlinear optimization problem. The underlying PDE is discretized by the Ritz method using a two-layer spline neural network based on either the primal or dual formulations that minimize the respective energy or complimentary functionals. Essential boundary conditions are imposed weakly through the functionals with proper norms. It is proved that the Ritz approximation is the best approximation in the energy norm; moreover, effect of numerical integration for the Ritz approximation is analyzed as well. Two estimators for adaptive neuron enhancement method are introduced, one is the so-called recovery estimator and the other is the least-squares estimator. Finally, numerical results for diffusion problems with either corner or intersecting interface singularities are presented.

Deep Learning-Aided OFDM-Based Generalized Optical Quadrature Spatial Modulation

In this paper, we propose an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based generalized optical quadrature spatial modulation (GOQSM) technique for multiple-input multiple-output optical wireless communication (MIMO-OWC) systems. Considering the error propagation and noise amplification effects when applying maximum likelihood and maximum ratio combining (ML-MRC)-based detection, we further propose a deep neural network (DNN)-aided detection for OFDM-based GOQSM systems. The proposed DNN-aided detection scheme performs the GOQSM detection in a joint manner, which can efficiently eliminate the adverse effects of both error propagation and noise amplification. The obtained simulation results successfully verify the superiority of the deep learning-aided OFDM-based GOQSM technique for high-speed MIMO-OWC systems.

Defect-free arbitrary-geometry assembly of mixed-species atom arrays

Optically trapped mixed-species single atom arrays with arbitrary geometries are an attractive and promising platform for various applications, because tunable quantum systems with multiple components provide extra degrees of freedom for experimental control. Here, we report the first demonstration of two-dimensional $6\times4$ dual-species atom assembly with a filling fraction of 0.88 (0.89) for $^{85}$Rb ($^{87}$Rb) atoms. This mixed-species atomic synthetic is achieved via rearranging initially randomly distributed atoms using a sorting algorithm (heuristic heteronuclear algorithm) which is proposed for bottom-up atom assembly with both user-defined geometries and two-species atom number ratios. Our fully tunable hybrid-atom system of scalable advantages is a good starting point for high-fidelity quantum logic, many-body quantum simulation and forming defect-free single molecule arrays.
