Spaces with distributional scalar curvature bounded from below: Optimal regularity and positive mass

In this work, we study the positive mass theorem under critical low regularity assumptions using Ricci flow smoothing. We show that asymptotically flat manifolds $(M^n,g)$ of regularity $L^\infty\cap W^{1,n}$ with non-negative distributional scalar curvature have non-negative ADM mass. Furthermore, when the ADM mass vanishes, the manifold is globally isometric to Euclidean space with respect to an integral distance introduced by De~Cecco-Palmieri. This extends the recent work of Hafemann to the critical regularity case. Our approach is based on showing that Riemannian metrics of regularity $L^\infty\cap W^{1,n}$, whose scalar curvature is bounded from below in the distributional sense, admit a Ricci flow smoothing whose scalar curvature is bounded from below by the same initial lower bound in the classical sense. In contrast, Cecchini-Frenck-Zeidler constructed examples of metrics which are in $L^\infty\cap W^{1,p}$ for all $2<p<n$, and whose distributional scalar curvature is bounded from below, that cannot be approximated by smooth metrics with the same scalar curvature lower bound. In this sense, our result is optimal.

PIC1 pinched manifolds are flat or compact

Hamilton's pinching conjecture, that three-dimensional complete non-compact manifolds with pinched Ricci curvature are flat, has recently been resolved using Ricci flow. In this paper we prove a direct analogue of that result in all dimensions. In order to do so we develop a lifting technique that allows us to handle manifolds that are collapsed at infinity. This new method also gives an alternative way of handling collapsed manifolds in the known three-dimensional case. As part of this approach, we prove a Ricci flow curvature estimate of a type that would normally be derived from the Harnack inequality, but without requiring the strong curvature positivity hypothesis demanded by Harnack. We give an improved gap theorem as a further application.

Ricci-DeTurck flow of almost continuous $L^2$-metrics, and metrics with distributional scalar curvature bounded from below

We consider Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g_0)$, $(M^n,h)$, where $(M^n,h)$ is smooth, complete, with curvature bounded in absolute value by $K_0 < \infty$, and $(1-\varepsilon_0(n)) h \leq g_0 \leq (1+\varepsilon_0(n)) h$ for some small $\varepsilon_0(n)>0$. It was shown by Simon (2002) that a Ricci-DeTurck flow solution $g(t)_{t \in (0,T)}$ related to $g_0$ exists for some $T=T(n,K_0)>0$. If $g_0 \in L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$ or $g_0 \in W^{1,2+2\sigma}_{\mathrm{loc}}$, $\sigma \in (0,\frac{1}{4})$, respectively, we show that $g(t) \to g_0$ in the $L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$- or $W^{1,2+\sigma}_{\mathrm{loc}}$-sense, respectively. If $M$ is closed, $g_0 \in W^{1,2+\sigma}(M)$ for some $\sigma>0$, and the distributional scalar curvature of Lee-LeFloch (2015) is not less than $b \in \mathbb{R}$, then we show that $g(t)$ has scalar curvature not less than $b$ in the smooth sense for all $t>0$.

Preserving curvature lower bounds when Ricci flowing non-smooth initial data

In this paper we survey some results on Ricci flowing non-smooth initial data. Among other things, we give a non-exhaustive list of various weak initial data which can be evolved with the Ricci flow. We also survey results which show that various curvature lower bounds will, possibly up to a constant, be preserved, if we start with such possibly non-smooth initial data. Some proofs/proof sketches are given in certain cases. A list of some open problems related to these areas is given in the last section of the paper.

Volume estimates and convergence results for solutions to Ricci flow with $L^{p}$ bounded scalar curvature

In this paper we study $n$-dimensional Ricci flows $(M^n,g(t))_{t\in [0,T)},$ where $T< \infty$ is a potentially singular time, and for which the spatial $L^p$ norm, $p>\frac n 2$, of the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded on $[0,T).$ In the case that $M$ is closed and four dimensional, we explain why non-collapsing estimates hold and how they can be combined with integral bounds on the Ricci and full curvature tensor of the prequel paper of the authors, as well as non-inflating estimates (already known due to works of Bamler), to obtain an improved space time integral bound of the Ricci curvature. As an application of these estimates, we show that if we further restrict to $n=4$, then the solution convergences to an orbifold as $t \to T$ and that the flow can be extended using the Orbifold Ricci flow to the time interval $ [0,T+\sigma)$ for some $\sigma>0.$ We also prove local versions of many of the results mentioned above.

Integral curvature estimates for solutions to Ricci flow with $L^p$ bounded scalar curvature

In this paper we prove localised weighted curvature integral estimates for solutions to the Ricci flow in the setting of a smooth four dimensional Ricci flow or a closed $n$-dimensional K\"ahler Ricci flow. These integral estimates improve and extend the integral curvature estimates shown by the second author in an earlier paper. If the scalar curvature is uniformly bounded in the spatial $L^p$ sense for some $p>2,$ then the estimates imply a uniform bound on the spatial $L^2$ norm of the Riemannian curvature tensor. Stronger integral estimates are shown to hold if one further assumes a weak non-inflating condition, or we restrict to closed manifolds.

On the Hamilton-Lott conjecture in higher dimensions

We study $n$-dimensional Ricci flows with non-negative Ricci curvature where the curvature is pointwise controlled by the scalar curvature and bounded by $C/t$, starting at metric cones which are Reifenberg outside the tip. We show that any such flow behaves like a self-similar solution up to an exponential error in time. As an application, we show that smooth $n$-dimensional complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds which are uniformly PIC1-pinched, with positive asymptotic volume ratio, are Euclidean. This confirms a higher dimensional version of a conjecture of Hamilton and Lott under the assumption of non-collapsing. It also yields a new and more direct proof of the original conjecture of Hamilton and Lott in three dimensions.

Initial stability estimates for Ricci flow and three dimensional Ricci-pinched manifolds

This paper investigates the question of stability for a class of Ricci flows which start at possibly non-smooth metric spaces. We show that if the initial metric space is Reifenberg and locally bi-Lipschitz to Euclidean space, then two solutions to the Ricci flow whose Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded from below and whose curvature is bounded by $c\cdot t^{-1}$ converge to one another at an exponential rate once they have been appropriately gauged. As an application, we show that smooth three dimensional, complete, uniformly Ricci-pinched Riemannian manifolds with bounded curvature are either compact or flat, thus confirming a conjecture of Hamilton and Lott.

Ricci flow of $W^{2,2}$-metrics in four dimensions

In this paper we construct solutions to Ricci DeTurck flow in four dimensions on closed manifolds which are instantaneously smooth but whose initial values $g$ are (possibly) non-smooth Riemannian metrics whose components in smooth coordinates belong to $W^{2,2}$ and satisfy $ \frac{1}{a}h\leq g\leq a h$ for some $1<a<\infty$ and some smooth Riemannian metric $h$ on $M$. A Ricci flow related solution is constructed whose initial value is isometric in a weak sense to the initial value of the Ricci DeTurck solution. Results for a related non-compact setting are also presented. Various $L^p$ estimates for Ricci flow, which we require for some of the main results, are also derived. As an application we present a possible definition of scalar curvature $\geq k$ for $W^{2,2}$ metrics $g$ on closed four manifolds which are bounded in the $L^{\infty}$ sense by $ \frac{1}{a}h\leq g\leq a h$ for some $1<a<\infty$ and some smooth Riemannian metric $h$ on $M$.

On the regularity of Ricci flows coming out of metric spaces

We consider smooth, not necessarily complete, Ricci flows, $(M,g(t))_{t\in (0,T)}$ with ${\mathrm{Ric}}(g(t)) \geq -1$ and $| {\mathrm{Rm}} (g(t))| \leq c/t$ for all $t\in (0 ,T)$ coming out of metric spaces $(M,d_0)$ in the sense that $(M,d(g(t)), x_0) \to (M,d_0, x_0)$ as $t\searrow 0$ in the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff sense. In the case that $B_{g(t)}(x_0,1) \Subset M$ for all $t\in (0,T)$ and $d_0$ is generated by a smooth Riemannian metric in distance coordinates, we show using Ricci-harmonic map heat flow, that there is a corresponding smooth solution $\tilde g(t)_{t\in (0,T)}$ to the $\delta$-Ricci-DeTurck flow on an Euclidean ball ${\mathbb B}_{r}(p_0) \subset {\mathbb R}^n$, which can be extended to a smooth solution defined for $t \in [0,T)$. We further show, that this implies that the original solution $g$ can be extended to a smooth solution on $B_{d_0}(x_0,r/2)$ for $t\in [0,T)$, in view of the method of Hamilton.

Local mollification of Riemannian metrics using Ricci flow, and Ricci limit spaces

We use Ricci flow to obtain a local bi-Holder correspondence between Ricci limit spaces in three dimensions and smooth manifolds. This is more than a complete resolution of the three-dimensional case of the conjecture of Anderson-Cheeger-Colding-Tian, describing how Ricci limit spaces in three dimensions must be homeomorphic to manifolds, and we obtain this in the most general, locally non-collapsed case. The proofs build on results and ideas from recent papers of Hochard and the current authors.

Local control on the geometry in 3D Ricci flow

The geometry of a ball within a Riemannian manifold is coarsely controlled if it has a lower bound on its Ricci curvature and a positive lower bound on its volume. We prove that such coarse local geometric control must persist for a definite amount of time under three-dimensional Ricci flow, and leads to local C/t decay of the full curvature tensor, irrespective of what is happening beyond the local region. As a by-product, our results generalise the Pseudolocality theorem of Perelman and Tian-Wang in this dimension by not requiring the Ricci curvature to be almost-positive, and not asking the volume growth to be almost-Euclidean.

Optimal curvature estimates for homogeneous Ricci flows

We prove uniform curvature estimates for homogeneous Ricci flows: For a solution defined on $[0,t]$ the norm of the curvature tensor at time $t$ is bounded by the maximum of $C(n)/t$ and $C(n) ( scal(g(t)) - scal(g(0)) )$. This is used to show that solutions with finite extinction time are Type I, immortal solutions are Type III and ancient solutions are Type I, where all the constants involved depend only on the dimension $n$. A further consequence is that a non-collapsed homogeneous ancient solution on a compact homogeneous space emerges from a unique Einstein metric on the same space. The above curvature estimates are proved using a gap theorem for Ricci-flatness on homogeneous spaces. The proof of this gap theorem is by contradiction and uses a local $W^{2,p}$ convergence result, which holds without symmetry assumptions.

Extending four dimensional Ricci flows with bounded scalar curvature

We consider smooth solutions (M,g(t)), 0 <= t <T, to Ricci flow on compact, connected, four dimensional manifolds without boundary. We assume that the scalar curvature is bounded uniformly, and that T is finite. In this case, we show that the metric space (M,d(t)) associated to (M,g(t)) converges uniformly in the C^0 sense to (X,d), as t approaches T, where (X,d) is a C^0 Riemannian orbifold with at most finitely many orbifold points. Estimates on the rate of convergence near and away from the orbifold points are given. We also show that it is possible to continue the flow past (X,d) using the orbifold Ricci flow.

Some integral curvature estimates for the Ricci flow in four dimensions

We consider solutions (M,g(t)), 0 <= t <T, to Ricci flow on compact, four dimensional manifolds without boundary. We prove integral curvature estimates which are valid for any such solution. In the case that the scalar curvature is bounded and T is finite, we show that these estimates imply that the (spatial) integral of the square of the norm of the Riemannian curvature is bounded by a constant independent of time t for all 0 <= t<T and that the space time integral over M x [0,T) of the fourth power of the norm of the Ricci curvature is bounded.

Ricci Flow of regions with curvature bounded below in dimension three

We consider smooth complete solutions to Ricci flow with bounded curvature on manifolds without boundary in dimension three. Assuming an open ball at time zero of radius one has curvature bounded from below by -1, then we prove estimates which show that compactly contained subregions of this ball will be smoothed out by the Ricci flow for a short but well defined time interval. The estimates we obtain depend only on the initial volume of the ball and the distance from the compact region to the boundary of the initial ball. Versions of these estimates for balls of radius r follow using scaling arguments.

Some local estimates and a uniqueness result for the entire biharmonic heat equation

We consider smooth solutions to the biharmonic heat equation on Euclidean space for which the square of the Laplacian at time t is globally bounded from above by k/t for some k in R, for all t in [0,T]. We prove local, in space and time, estimates for such solutions. We explain how these estimates imply uniqueness of smooth solutions in this class.
