Towards a Simplified Theory of Double Boolean Algebras: Axioms and Topological Representation

Double Boolean algebras (dBas), introduced by Wille, are based on twenty-three identities. We present a simplified axiom system, the D-core algebra, and prove it is equivalent to Wille's original definition. This reduction allows improved structural results, including a refined Boolean representation theorem showing fewer conditions suffice to represent a dBa as a pair of Boolean algebras linked by adjoint maps. We generalize the glued-sum construction to possibly overlapping Boolean algebras, characterize them via a generalized order, and establish a Stone-type topological representation: every dBa is quasi-isomorphic to a dBa of clopen subsets of a Stone space. Simplified logical systems for contextual and pure dBas are developed with soundness and completeness.

Arrow Relations in Lattices of Integer Partitions

We give a complete characterisation of the single and double arrow relations of the standard context $K(L_n)$ of the lattice $L_n$ of partitions of any positive integer $n$ under the dominance order, thereby addressing an open question of Ganter, 2022.

On when the union of two algebraic sets is algebraic

In universal algebraic geometry, an algebra is called an equational domain if the union of two algebraic sets is algebraic. We characterize equational domains, with respect to polynomial equations, inside congruence permutable varieties, and with respect to term equations, among all algebras of size two and all algebras of size three with a cyclic automorphism. Furthermore, for each size at least three, we prove that, modulo term equivalence, there is a continuum of equational domains of that size.

Representing partition lattices through FCA

We investigate the standard context, denoted by $\mathbb{K}\left(\mathcal{L}_{n}\right)$, of the lattice $\mathcal{L}_{n}$ of partitions of a positive integer $n$ under the dominance order. Motivated by the discrete dynamical model to study integer partitions by Latapy and Duong Phan and by the characterization of the supremum and (infimum) irreducible partitions of $n$ by Brylawski, we show how to construct the join-irreducible elements of $\mathcal{L}_{n+1}$ from $\mathcal{L}_{n}$. We employ this construction to count the number of join-irreducible elements of $\mathcal{L}_{n}$, and show that the number of objects (and attributes) of $\mathbb{K}\left(\mathcal{L}_{n}\right)$ has order $\Theta(n^2)$.

A note on the Burris-Willard conjecture

Based on results by Dani\v{l}\v{c}enko, in 1987 Burris and Willard have conjectured that on any $k$-element domain where $k\geq 3$ it is possible to bicentrically generate every centraliser clone from its $k$-ary part. Later, for every $k\geq 3$, Snow constructed algebras with a $k$-element carrier set where the minimum arity of the clone of term operations from which the bicentraliser can be generated is at least $(k-1)^2$, which is larger than $k$ for $k\geq 3$. We prove that Snow's examples do not violate the Burris-Willard conjecture nor invalidate the results by Dani\v{l}\v{c}enko on which the latter is based. We also complement our results with some computational evidence for $k=3$, obtained by an algorithm to compute a primitive positive definition for a relation in a finitely generated relational clone over a finite set.

All centralising monoids with majority witnesses on a four-element set

We study unary parts of centraliser clones on the set $\{0,1,2,3\}$, so-called centralising monoids. We describe and count all centralising monoids on the set $\{0,1,2,3\}$ having majority operations as witnesses, and we list the inclusion maximal proper submonoids of the full transformation monoid among them. This extends previous work by Goldstern, Machida and Rosenberg.

On a stronger reconstruction notion for monoids and clones

Motivated by reconstruction results by Rubin, we introduce a new reconstruction notion for permutation groups, transformation monoids and clones, called automatic action compatibility, which entails automatic homeomorphicity. We further give a characterization of automatic homeomorphicity for transformation monoids on arbitrary carriers with a dense group of invertibles having automatic homeomorphicity. We then show how to lift automatic action compatibility from groups to monoids and from monoids to clones under fairly weak assumptions. We finally employ these theorems to get automatic action compatibility results for monoids and clones over several well-known countable structures, including the strictly ordered rationals, the directed and undirected version of the random graph, the random tournament and bipartite graph, the generic strictly ordered set, and the directed and undirected versions of the universal homogeneous Henson graphs.

The number of clones determined by disjunctions of unary relations

We consider finitary relations (also known as crosses) that are definable via finite disjunctions of unary relations, i.e. subsets, taken from a fixed finite parameter set $\Gamma$. We prove that whenever $\Gamma$ contains at least one non-empty relation distinct from the full carrier set, there is a countably infinite number of polymorphism clones determined by relations that are disjunctively definable from $\Gamma$. Finally, we extend our result to finitely related polymorphism clones and countably infinite sets $\Gamma$.

Reconstructing the topology on monoids and polymorphism clones of the rationals

We show how to reconstruct the topology on the monoid of endomorphisms of the rational numbers under the strict or reflexive order relation, and the polymorphism clone of the rational numbers under the reflexive relation. In addition we show how automatic homeomorphicity results can be lifted to polymorphism clones generated by monoids.

Galois theory for semiclones

We present a Galois theory connecting finitary operations with pairs of finitary relations one of which is contained in the other. The Galois closed sets on both sides are characterised as locally closed subuniverses of the full iterative function algebra (semiclones) and relation pair clones, respectively. Moreover, we describe the modified closure operators if only functions and relation pairs of a certain bounded arity, respectively, are considered.

Minimal Distance of Propositional Models

We investigate the complexity of three optimization problems in Boolean propositional logic related to information theory: Given a conjunctive formula over a set of relations, find a satisfying assignment with minimal Hamming distance to a given assignment that satisfies the formula ($\mathsf{NeareastOtherSolution}$, $\mathsf{NOSol}$) or that does not need to satisfy it ($\mathsf{NearestSolution}$, $\mathsf{NSol}$). The third problem asks for two satisfying assignments with a minimal Hamming distance among all such assignments ($\mathsf{MinSolutionDistance}$, $\mathsf{MSD}$). For all three problems we give complete classifications with respect to the relations admitted in the formula. We give polynomial time algorithms for several classes of constraint languages. For all other cases we prove hardness or completeness regarding APX, APX, NPO, or equivalence to well-known hard optimization problems.

Unique inclusions of maximal C-clones in maximal clones

$\mathit{C}$-clones are polymorphism sets of so-called clausal relations, a special type of relations on a finite domain, which first appeared in connection with constraint satisfaction problems in [Creignou et al. 2008]. We completely describe the relationship w.r.t. set inclusion between maximal $\mathit{C}$-clones and maximal clones. As a main result we obtain that for every maximal $\mathit{C}$-clone there exists exactly one maximal clone in which it is contained. A precise description of this unique maximal clone, as well as a corresponding completeness criterion for $\mathit{C}$-clones is given.
