Testing F-theory GUTs with the Axiverse

We show that axions coupled to photons in F-theory Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) satisfy the coupling-to-mass relation $g_{a\gamma}/m_a \leq C\, \frac{\alpha_{\rm em}}{2\pi}\frac{1}{m_\pi f_\pi}$, with $C$ a calculable coefficient. This bound is saturated for the QCD axion with $C = \mathcal{O}(1)$ and holds in field theoretic and perturbative heterotic GUT constructions. In F-theory, topological GUT symmetry breaking by hypercharge flux introduces axion-like particles (ALPs) coupled to photons without coupling to QCD. These ALPs arise from the non-universal holomorphic threshold corrections to the gauge kinetic functions induced by the hypercharge flux. When gauge couplings approximately unify near the string scale, as required in phenomenologically viable models, the shift symmetries of these ALPs are broken by D-instantons whose action is controlled by the size of the threshold corrections to the gauge couplings. Small corrections imply unsuppressed instantons and heavy ALPs. We compute the resulting axion potentials and show that the coupling-to-mass ratio $g_{a\gamma}/m_a$ for every non-universal ALP lies well below the QCD axion prediction. We consider possible loopholes to this result -- some of which could lead to $C\gg 1$ -- and argue that none of them allows for $g_{a\gamma}/m_a$ to be arbitrarily above the QCD axion prediction within regions of control for the effective action. The bound persists in models with large threshold corrections, where new incomplete GUT multiplets at intermediate energy scales are required. As a result, in the geometric regime, where the $\alpha'$ expansion is under control, no ALP parametrically above the QCD axion band exists. Our results make F-theory GUTs falsifiable: finding an ALP far above the QCD band, for example discovering axion-induced cosmic birefringence, rules out F-theory GUTs in regimes of control of the effective theory.

Naturalness and Fisher Information

Fine-tuning and naturalness, the sensitivity of low-energy observables to small changes in the fundamental parameters of a theory, are cornerstones of physics beyond the Standard Model. We propose a new measure of fine-tuning based on information theory. To each point in parameter space we associate a probability distribution over observables. Divergence measures encode the sensitivity of observables to model parameters and determine a Riemannian metric on parameter space. By Chentsov's theorem, the physically motivated metric is the Fisher information metric, up to scaling. We propose a rescaled fine-tuning matrix $\mathcal{F}_{ij}$ derived from the Fisher information matrix, whose non-zero eigenvalues serve as our measure of fine-tuning. When the number of observables exceeds the number of parameters, $\mathcal{F}_{ij}$ admits a natural geometric interpretation as the pullback of the Euclidean metric from observable space to the submanifold of admissible predictions, with large eigenvalues corresponding to highly stretched directions and indicative of fine-tuning. Our measure reproduces the familiar Barbieri--Giudice criterion as a special case, while generalising it to multiple correlated parameters. We illustrate its behaviour on dimensional transmutation, the Wilson--Fisher fixed point, a simple model of the hierarchy problem, and the electron Yukawa coupling, finding agreement with physical intuition in each case.

Inflation with a Growing Fifth Dimension

Inflation generally assumes a field with nonzero potential that leads to inflationary expansion happening at arbitrarily early times. We demonstrate potentially observable consequences of inflation with a finite initial time in a model in five-dimensional warped anti-de Sitter space, with both a UV and an IR brane present during inflation. Considering an inflaton with an approximately flat potential localized on the UV brane, we derive the resulting brane motion in the bulk and the 4D effective action describing the dynamics. A concrete model allows us to evaluate possible consequences of a starting point of inflation. The background evolution is driven by the fast roll of the radion at early times and the slow roll of the inflaton at late times. We find that the action has the form of a two-field hyperbolic inflation model, the two fields being the radion and the inflaton, both of which have a time-dependent background solution. This setup is holographically dual to an inflaton coupled to a strongly coupled confining sector in which the ratio of the confinement scale to the 4D Planck scale evolves cosmologically. Focusing on the period when the equation of state becomes that of inflation, we find that the presence of the IR brane leads to deviations from the approximate de Sitter background in addition to those from the slow-roll parameters of the inflaton potential. We quantify the effect of the presence of the IR brane on the two point function of the adiabatic scalar perturbations and tensor perturbations. The dominant deviations occur at large scales: the adiabatic power spectrum has a blue tilt, while the tensor power spectrum shows oscillatory features. We present numerical fits to the shape of the adiabatic power spectrum, and discuss the implications for cosmic microwave background (CMB) analysis.

Axion couplings in Orbifold GUTs

We consider the coupling of axions to gauge bosons in higher-dimensional Grand Unified Theories (GUT) inspired by string theory constructions with D-branes on orbifold singularities, the so-called orbifold GUTs. Due to their topological properties, axion couplings to gauge bosons are independent of the gauge symmetry reduction mechanism and the background geometry -- they only depend on the embedding of the SM into the UV gauge group. There are two kinds of axions in this class of theories: axions coming from gauge fields in the bulk and axions localised on the boundaries. The axion-photon coupling for the bulk axions coincide with the results from 4-dimensional GUTs, where axions which couple to photons necessarily couple also to QCD. The brane-localised axions can couple to photons independently of the QCD coupling, but if gauge couplings are approximately unified, the axions get large masses from unsuppressed instantons on the boundaries. This means that the ratio $g_{a\gamma\gamma}/m_a$ is below (or equal to) the QCD axion value for all axions in orbifold GUTs, as is the case for unified theories in 4d.

Warped Dimensions at the Cosmological Collider

Extra dimensions are present in many beyond the Standard Model scenarios, most notably in string theory. However, direct signatures of extra dimensions are difficult to observe in many cases. This is the situation, for example, if the energy scales associated with extra dimensions are close to the string or Grand Unification scale. The energetic early universe provides an exciting opportunity to overcome this challenge, since the heavy states associated with high-scale extra dimensions, such as scalar moduli and Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons, could have been produced on-shell at early epochs. In this work, we illustrate this by focusing on how such states can be produced during inflation and leave signatures in primordial non-Gaussianity (NG). Specifically, we consider a 5D spacetime with a warped extra dimension that remains stabilized as inflation proceeds in the four non-compact dimensions. By discussing an explicit stabilization mechanism, we compute the masses and couplings of the radion modulus and the KK graviton modes. Being gravitational degrees of freedom, these unavoidably couple to the field(s) generating curvature perturbation, and can lead to observable NG with a distinctive oscillatory shape and characteristic angular dependence. We give example benchmarks which can already be probed by the Planck data and identify targets for the future. Our study shows that cosmological surveys have the potential to observe on-shell imprints of extra dimensions in the coming years.

More Effective RS Field Theory

In this paper we derive the effective theory for a stabilized five-dimensional warped geometry, addressing several outstanding issues in this derivation. These include allowing for a non-zero 4d cosmological constant, accounting for constraints from both the UV and IR branes, and determining how the stabilized theory responds to an energy perturbation on each brane. We show how a consistent low-energy effective theory from a stable warped solution must respect a constraint that follows from the higher-dimensional Einstein equation. Satisfying the constraint requires that the 4d cosmological constant must be the same everywhere throughout the bulk, which means the stabilizing fields must adjust to allow for the same 4d curvature everywhere in the extra dimension. We show explicitly how this works in a 5d model, and how the correct 4d effective potential reproduces this behavior. We find that the cosmological constant generated from adding energy to one of the branes is unaffected by the details of the stabilization mechanism at leading order, despite the need for the stabilizing fields to adjust. In anticipation of a companion paper, we also briefly discuss how supersymmetry can be realized consistently in the 5d theory. In particular, we show how the stabilization mechanism remains consistent with sequestering, even as the supersymmetry-breaking energy is reflected in the stabilizing field throughout the bulk.

Sequestered Conformal Anomaly Mediation (SCAM)

Supersymmetric models in singular extra dimensional spaces feature prominently in many interesting phenomenological models, including those derived from string theory. In this paper we explicitly derive the low energy theory of phenomenologically viable supersymmetric theories in five dimensions, and highlight several aspects of these models that are not obvious from working solely in the 4d effective theory. Important deviations arise for anomaly mediation, which is purported to be a predictive mechanism to mediate supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking that is naturally most relevant in extra dimensional theories. Despite this, most analyses of anomaly mediation have been performed in the 4d effective theory. We fill this gap in the literature by constructing stabilized supersymmetric theories in 5d and studying supersymmetry breaking and anomaly mediation. Studying Sequestered Conformal Anomaly-Mediated (SCAM) in full generality reveals important deviations from the 4d EFT expectations, particularly for the role of boundary superpotentials, the radion and the predicted universality of anomaly mediation. We discuss the requirements for viable extra dimensional models of SUSY-breaking, and demonstrate when and how the anomaly-mediated masses in 5d reduce to the na{\i}ve 4d supersymmetric result. In many cases supersymmetry is necessarily broken at the 5d level, leading to anomaly-mediated and other supersymmetry breaking masses that are not derivable in a simple supersymmetric 4d EFT, but need to be included as matching corrections. We comment on the potential implications of our methods for phenomenology and singular higher-dimensional constructions, such as the KKLT scenario.

Axion Couplings in Heterotic String Theory

We study the coupling of axions to gauge bosons in heterotic string theory. The axion-gauge boson couplings in the low energy 4d theory are derived by matching mixed anomalies between higher-form global symmetries and the zero-form gauge symmetry in the 10d theory. When the standard model gauge group is embedded in a single simple group in the 10d theory -- as is the case for almost all heterotic models studied in the literature -- the ratio of the axion-photon coupling to the axion mass is bounded above by the QCD line. This bound is relevant for a large number of axion searches which have sensitivity to axion parameter space above this line. The discovery of an axion in these searches will rule out a large class of heterotic models, making such a signal challenging to explain within heterotic string theory.

Electroweak Phase Transition with a Double Well Done Doubly Well

We revisit the electroweak phase transition in the scalar singlet extension of the standard model with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. In significant parts of the parameter space the phase transition occurs in two steps - including canonical benchmarks used in experimental projections for gravitational waves. Domain walls produced in the first step of the transition seed the final step to the electroweak vacuum, an effect which is typically neglected but leads to an exponentially enhanced tunnelling rate. We improve previous results obtained for the seeded transition, which made use of the thin-wall or high temperature approximations, by using the mountain pass algorithm that was recently proposed as a useful tool for seeded processes. We then determine the predictions of the seeded transition for the latent heat, bubble size and characteristic time scale of the transition. Differences compared to homogeneous transitions are most pronounced when there are relatively few domain walls per hubble patch, potentially leading to an enhanced gravitational wave signal. We also provide a derivation of the percolation criteria for a generic seeded transition, which applies to the domain wall seeds we consider as well as to strings and monopoles.

Mesotuned WIMPs and Avoided Deconfinement

We discuss the production of dark matter with mass of order $10$-$100$ TeV and $\mathcal{O}(1)$ couplings to the standard model, a scenario we refer to as the `mesotuned WIMP'. Given the lack of new physics observed at the LHC, indicating we live in a world with some degree of fine-tuning, this scale is a natural scale to expect new particles to appear. However, dark matter with mass in this range and large couplings is difficult to produce with the observed relic abundance via the usual mechanisms. Here we discuss the nonthermal production of dark matter and show that this mechanism can produce the observed dark matter in this mass range, but requires a specific relationship between the dark matter mass and the reheat temperature. It is shown that the avoided deconfinement model removes the dependence on the reheat temperature and predicts a dark matter candidate that can be tested at the Cherenkov Telescope Array and direct detection experiments, offering a natural setting for mesotuned WIMP dark matter.

Axion Couplings in Grand Unified Theories

We show that the couplings of axions to gauge bosons are highly restricted in Grand Unified Theories where the standard model is embedded in a simple 4D gauge group. The topological nature of these couplings allows them to be matched from the UV to the IR, and the ratio of the anomaly with photons and gluons for any axion is fixed by unification. This implies that there is a single axion, the QCD axion, with an anomalous coupling to photons. Other light axion-like particles can couple to photons by mixing through the QCD axion portal and lie to the right of the QCD line in the mass-coupling plane. Axions which break the unification relation between gluon and photon couplings are necessarily charged under the GUT gauge group and become heavy from perturbative mass contributions. A discovery of an axion to the left of the QCD line can rule out simple Grand Unified models. Axion searches are therefore tabletop and astrophysical probes of Grand Unification.

The Boring Monopole

We study false vacuum decays catalysed by magnetic monopoles which act as tunnelling sites with exponentially enhanced decay rates. The field profiles describing the decay do not have the typically assumed $O(3)/O(4)$ symmetry, thus requiring an extension of the usual decay rate calculation. To numerically determine the saddle point solutions which describe the tunnelling process we use a new algorithm based on the mountain pass theorem. This method can be applied more widely to phase transitions with reduced symmetry, such as decays away from the zero and infinite temperature limits. Our results show that monopole-catalysed tunnelling can dominate over the homogeneous false vacuum decay for a wide range of parameters, significantly modify the gravitational wave signal or trigger phase transitions which would otherwise never complete. A single boring monopole in our Hubble patch may determine the lifetime of the Standard Model vacuum.

Avoided Deconfinement in Randall-Sundrum Models

We study first order phase transitions in Randall-Sundrum models in the early universe dual to confinement in large-$N$ gauge theories. The transition rate to the confined phase is suppressed by a factor $\exp(-N^2)$, and may not complete for $N \gg 1$, instead leading to an eternally inflating phase. To avoid this fate, the resulting constraint on $N$ makes the RS effective field theory only marginally under control. We present a mechanism where the IR brane remains stabilized at very high temperature, so that the theory stays in the confined phase at all times after inflation and reheating. We call this mechanism avoided deconfinement. The mechanism involves adding new scalar fields on the IR brane which provide a stablilizing contribution to the radion potential at finite temperature, in a spirit similar to Weinberg's symmetry non-restoration mechanism. Avoided deconfinement allows for a viable cosmology for theories with parametrically large $N$. Early universe cosmological phenomena such as WIMP freeze-out, axion abundance, baryogenesis, phase transitions, and gravitational wave signatures are qualitatively modified.

Electric Dipole Moments from Post-Sphaleron Baryogenesis

We consider a model in which baryogenesis occurs at low scale, at a temperature below the electroweak phase transition. This model involves new diquark-type scalars which carry baryon number. Baryon number violation is introduced in the scalar potential, permitting $\Delta B=2$ violating process involving Standard Model quarks while avoiding stringent proton decay constraints. Depending on their quantum number assignment, the diquark-type scalars can couple to either right or left handed quarks, or to both. We show that this model can provide a viable explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe provided that the coupling to left handed quarks are present. However, the coexistence of couplings to left and right handed quarks introduces important phenomenological constraints on the model, such as radiative contributions to quark masses and the generation of electric dipole moments for nuclei, which probe the CP even and CP odd products of the relevant couplings constants, respectively. We demonstrate that the strongest such constraints arise from electric dipole moment measurements of the neutron and $^{199}$Hg. These constraints are sufficiently strong that, in the absence of an intricate flavor structure, baryogenesis must be dominated by the couplings of the new scalars to left handed quarks.
