A Metric for Three-Dimensional Color Discrimination Derived from V1 Population Fisher Information

We derive a Riemannian metric on three-dimensional color space from the Fisher information of neural population codes in the visual pathway. Photoreceptor adaptation, retinal opponent channels, and cortical population encoding each map onto a geometric construction, producing a metric tensor whose components correspond to measurable neural quantities. The resulting 17-parameter model is fitted jointly to four independent threshold datasets: MacAdam's (1942) chromaticity ellipses, the Koenderink et al. (2026) three-dimensional ellipsoids, Wright's (1941) wavelength discrimination function, and the Huang et al. (2012) threshold color difference ellipses, covering 96 independently measured discrimination conditions across varied chromaticities and luminances. The joint fit achieves STRESS of 23.9 on MacAdam, 20.8 on Koenderink et al., 30.1 on Wright, and 30.8 on Huang et al.

Curvature Blindness from Polarity Breaks and Orientation Channel Fragmentation in V1

We present a mathematical model of the curvature blindness illusion in which sinusoids appear as angular zigzags when drawn with alternating contrast polarity against a gray background. The model identifies two complementary mechanisms, both operating in V1. First, polarity channel separation: simple cells are selective for contrast polarity, and lateral connections link only same polarity neurons; where the line switches from darker than background to lighter than background at each peak and trough, the encoding population changes and the lateral chain is broken, segmenting the contour into half-wavelength pieces. Second, orientation channel fragmentation: at moderate contrast, the active orientation window is narrow, and within each half-wavelength segment no single orientation channel spans the full range of edge normals; the inflection point at the center of each segment anchors a locally straight percept. Together, the two mechanisms produce a zigzag: polarity breaks supply the corners, and fragmentation straightens the segments between them.

Splitting symplectic fillings

We generalize the mixed tori which appear in the second author's JSJ-type decomposition theorem for symplectic fillings of contact manifolds. Mixed tori are convex surfaces in contact manifolds which may be used to decompose symplectic fillings. We call our more general surfaces splitting surfaces, and show that the decomposition of symplectic fillings continues to hold. Specifically, given a strong or exact symplectic filling of a contact manifold which admits a splitting surface, we produce a new symplectic manifold which strongly or exactly fills its boundary, and which is related to the original filling by Liouville surgery.

A JSJ-type decomposition theorem for symplectic fillings

We establish a JSJ-type decomposition theorem for splitting exact symplectic fillings of contact 3-manifolds along \emph{mixed tori} -- these are convex tori satisfying a particular geometric condition. As an application, we show that if $(M,\xi)$ is obtained from $(S^3,\xi_{\mathrm{std}})$ via Legendrian surgery along a knot which has been stabilized both positively and negatively, then $(M,\xi)$ has a unique exact filling.

On The Augmentation Categories of Positive Braid Closures

In this paper we show that 0-resolution of a crossing in the Legendrian closure of a positive braid induces a cohomologically faithful $A_\infty$ functor on augmentation categories. In particular, we compute the bilinearized Legendrian contact cohomology of these knots for augmentations induced by 0-resolution.
