One-loop Amplitudes: String Methods, Infrared Regularization, and Automation

We calculate field theory loop amplitudes by string methods, applied to half-maximal 4-point one-loop graviton amplitudes. Infrared divergences are regulated similarly to soft-collinear effective field theory (SCET): new mass scales are introduced, here by higher-point kinematics. We use an analytically continued single-valued polylogarithm as generating function. The Feynman integrals for the new tensor structures are infrared finite. We provide code as a step towards automation.

Scattering three closed strings off a Dp-brane in pure spinor formalism

We compute the disk amplitude of three closed strings in the pure spinor formalism. Among others, this amplitude probes tree-level gravitational interactions in the presence of Dp-branes. After disentangling holomorphic and anti-holomorphic closed string coordinates on the disk by means of introducing monodromy phases we find a compact expression for the disk amplitude of three closed strings in terms of open superstring six-point amplitudes. Furthermore, we provide the low-energy expansion (in the inverse string tension) of our amplitude and discuss some relevant Dp-brane couplings associated to it. Finally, we write down an expression for the general structure of the disk amplitude of any number n_c of closed strings in terms of pure open string amplitudes involving 2n_c open strings.

Closed string disk amplitudes in the pure spinor formalism

We evaluate closed string disk amplitudes in the pure spinor formalism. We focus on low point functions (two- and one-point functions) but our analysis is also relevant for higher n-point functions. Amongst others we discuss issues arising due to the gauge fixing of the conformal Killing group of the disk and due to the zero mode prescription in the pure spinor formalism. As expected, in the end we find agreement with the known results from the RNS formalism.

Probing anomalous driving

We study the effects of driving a magnetically charged black brane solution of Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory by a time dependent electric field. From a holographic perspective, we find that placing a sample in a background magnetic field and driving the system via a parallel electric field generates a charge current which may oscillate for long periods and (or) may exhibit non-Ohmic behavior. We discuss how these two effects manifest themselves in various types of quenches and in periodic driving of the sample.

Field redefinitions and K\"ahler potential in string theory at 1-loop

Field redefinitions at string 1-loop order are often required by supersymmetry, for instance in order to make the K\"ahler structure of the scalar kinetic terms manifest. We derive the general structure of the field redefinitions and the K\"ahler potential at string 1-loop order in a certain class of string theory models (4-dimensional toroidal type IIB orientifolds with ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry) and for a certain subsector of fields (untwisted K\"ahler moduli and the 4-dimensional dilaton). To do so we make use of supersymmetry, perturbative axionic shift symmetries and a particular ansatz for the form of the 1-loop corrections to the metric on the moduli space. Our results also show which terms in the low-energy effective action have to be calculated via concrete string amplitudes in order to fix the values of the coefficients (in the field redefinitions and the K\"ahler potential) that are left undetermined by our general analysis based on (super)symmetry.

Towards the One-loop Kahler Metric of Calabi-Yau Orientifolds

We evaluate string one-loop contributions to the Kahler metric of closed string moduli in toroidal minimally supersymmetric (Calabi-Yau) orientifolds with D-branes. We focus on the poorly understood N=1 sectors that receive contributions from all massive string states.

Quantum corrections to extremal black brane solutions

We discuss quantum corrections to extremal black brane solutions in N=2 U(1) gauged supergravity in four dimensions. We consider modifications due to a certain class of higher-derivative terms as well as perturbative corrections to the prepotential. We use the entropy function formalism to assess the impact of these corrections on singular brane solutions and we give a few examples. We then use first-order flow equations to construct solutions that interpolate between quantum corrected fixed points of the associated potentials.

On Nonrelativistic Diffeomorphism Invariance

We study certain aspects of the recently proposed notion of nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariance. In particular, we consider specific examples of invariant actions, extended gauge symmetry as well as an application to the theory of quantum Hall effect. We also discuss an alternative approach based on Horava-Lifshitz gravity.

Extremal black brane solutions in five-dimensional gauged supergravity

We study stationary black brane solutions in the context of N = 2, U(1) gauged supergravity in five dimensions. Using the formalism of first-order flow equations, we construct examples of extremal black brane solutions that include Nernst branes, i.e. extremal black brane solutions with vanishing entropy density, as well as black branes with cylindrical horizon topology, whose entropy density can be computed from a Cardy formula of the dual CFT.

One-Loop Kahler Metric of D-Branes at Angles

We evaluate string one-loop contributions to the Kahler metric of D-brane moduli (positions and Wilson lines), in toroidal orientifolds with branes at angles. Contributions due to bulk states in the loop are known, so we focus on the contributions due to states localized at intersections of orientifold images. We show that these quantum corrections vanish. This does not follow from the usual nonrenormalization theorems of supersymmetric field theory.

Nernst branes in gauged supergravity

We study static black brane solutions in the context of N = 2 U(1) gauged supergravity in four dimensions. Using the formalism of first-order flow equations, we construct novel extremal black brane solutions including examples of Nernst branes, i.e. extremal black brane solutions with vanishing entropy density. We also discuss a class of non-extremal generalizations which is captured by the first-order formalism.

Domain walls from ten dimensions

We write down the general conditions for N=1 supersymmetric four-dimensional domain walls, deriving them from a ten-dimensional point of view using generalized complex geometry. In cases where the compactification allows for a truncation to a finite number of fields, we make contact with a four-dimensional effective description. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the equations can be applied to renormalization-group flows of three-dimensional field theories. We allow for the presence of explicit brane sources and show how supersymmetry restricts their location in a natural way.

Towards Holographic Renormalization of Fake Supergravity

A step is made towards generalizing the method of holographic renormalization to backgrounds which are not asymptotically AdS, corresponding to a dual gauge theory which has logarithmically running couplings even in the ultraviolet. A prime example is the background of Klebanov-Strassler (KS). In particular, a recipe is given how to calculate renormalized two-point functions for the operators dual to the bulk scalars. The recipe makes use of gauge-invariant variables for the fluctuations around the background and works for any bulk theory of the fake supergravity type. It elegantly incorporates the renormalization scheme dependence of local terms in the correlators. Before applying the method to the KS theory, it is verified that known results in asymptotically AdS backgrounds are reproduced. Finally, some comments on the calculation of renormalized vacuum expectation values are made.

Update of D3/D7-Brane Inflation on K3 x T^2/Z_2

We update the D3/D7-brane inflation model on K3 x T^2/Z_2 with branes and fluxes. For this purpose, we study the low energy theory including g_s corrections to the gaugino condensate superpotential that stabilizes the K3 volume modulus. The gauge kinetic function is verified to become holomorphic when the original N=2 supersymmetry is spontaneously broken to N=1 by bulk fluxes. From the underlying classical N=2 supergravity, the theory inherits a shift symmetry which provides the inflaton with a naturally flat potential. We analyze the fate of this shift symmetry after the inclusion of quantum corrections. The field range of the inflaton is found to depend significantly on the complex structure of the torus but is independent of its volume. This allows for a large kinematical field range for the inflaton. Furthermore, we show that the D3/D7 model may lead to a realization of the recent CMB fit by Hindmarsh et al. with an 11% contribution from cosmic strings and a spectral index close to n_s=1. On the other hand, by a slight change of the parameters of the model one can strongly suppress the cosmic string contribution and reduce the spectral index n_s to fit the WMAP5 data in the absence of cosmic strings. We also demonstrate that the inclusion of quantum corrections allows for a regime of eternal D3/D7 inflation.

Fluid dynamics of R-charged black holes

We construct electrically charged AdS_5 black hole solutions whose charge, mass and boost-parameters vary slowly with the space-time coordinates. From the perspective of the dual theory, these are equivalent to hydrodynamic configurations with varying chemical potential, temperature and velocity fields. We compute the boundary theory transport coefficients associated with a derivative expansion of the energy momentum tensor and R-charge current up to second order. In particular, we find a first order transport coefficient associated with the axial component of the current.

Nonlinear viscous hydrodynamics in various dimensions using AdS/CFT

We compute coefficients of two-derivative terms in the hydrodynamic energy momentum tensor of a viscous fluid which has an AdS_D dual with D between 3 and 7. For the case of D=3 we obtain an exact AdS_3 black hole solution, valid to all orders in a derivative expansion, dual to a perfect fluid in 1+1 dimensions.
