The Flat Critical Branch Between Nariai and Bertotti-Robinson Geometries as a Solution of Cosmological Einstein-Maxwell Theory

We analyze a class of product geometries of the form $\mathbb{R}^{1,1}\times \Sigma_2$ supported by electric, magnetic, or dyonic flux in the Einstein-Maxwell-$\Lambda$ theory. These spacetimes belong to a unified family of direct products $(dS_2,\mathbb{R}^{1,1},AdS_2)\times \Sigma_2$ distinguished solely by the sign of the Lorentzian curvature of the two-dimensional factor. We focus on the critical configuration for which the Lorentzian curvature vanishes. At this balance point between the cosmological curvature and the Maxwell stress, the longitudinal geometry becomes exactly flat while the transverse sphere radius is fixed algebraically by the conserved flux. We refer to this geometry as the critical Maxwell flux string: a homogeneous flux-supported geometry curved only in the transverse directions and invariant along a two-dimensional null worldvolume. It represents the algebraic midpoint interpolating between the Nariai $(dS_2\times S^2)$ and Bertotti-Robinson $(AdS_2\times S^2)$ spacetimes. A qualitative structural change occurs precisely at this midpoint. The spacetime is Petrov type-D with constant scalar curvature invariants, placing it in the degenerate Kundt/CSI class. Because the curvature structure reduces any polynomial rank-two tensor to a linear combination of the metric and the Maxwell stress tensor, the same configuration solves a broad class of algebraic higher-curvature gravity theories. In this sense, the critical flux string and its aligned deformations constitute almost universal solutions.

Almost Universal Metrics

A metric is called universal if every symmetric conserved rank-two tensor constructed locally from the metric, the curvature, and covariant derivatives of the curvature is proportional to the metric. Such a metric solves arbitrary metric-based higher-curvature field equations after, at most, a change in the effective cosmological constant. A metric is called almost universal if the same field equations reduce instead to a finite set of algebraic conditions and a single linear scalar equation for a profile function. Universal and almost universal metrics are useful because they keep higher-curvature gravity under analytic control. Plane waves are a well-known example of universal metrics, while the Kerr-Schild-Kundt class of metrics including the $pp$-waves is almost universal. Here, we add a new member to this class of metrics and show that nonzero constant curvature $pp$-wave metrics are also almost universal. They reduce the generic gravity field equations to those of cosmological Einstein-Maxwell theory with null dust. The background of the $pp$-waves has the topology $\mathbb{R}^{1,1}\times S^{2}$ and provides the missing partner to the Nariai metric with ${\rm dS}^{2}\times S^{2}$ and the Bertotti-Robinson metric with ${\rm AdS}^{2}\times S^{2}$ topologies. These quantum-protected metrics are of clear interest. We exemplify our results by using the quadratic and cubic gravity theories.

Minimal Einstein-Aether Theory

We show that there is a phenomenologically and theoretically consistent limit of the generic Einstein-Aether theory in which the Einstein-Aether field equations reduce to Einstein field equations with a perfect fluid distribution sourced by the aether field. This limit is obtained by taking three of the coupling constants of the theory to be zero but keeping the expansion coupling constant to be nonzero. We then consider the further reduction of this limited version of Einstein-Aether theory by taking the expansion of the aether field to be constant (possibly zero), and thereby we introduce the Minimal Einstein-Aether theory that supports the Einstein metrics as solutions with a reduced cosmological constant. The square of the expansion of the unit-timelike aether field shifts the bare cosmological constant and thus provides, via local Lorentz symmetry breaking inherent in the Einstein-Aether theories, a novel mechanism for reconciling the observed, small cosmological constant (or dark energy) with the large theoretical prediction coming from quantum field theories. The crucial point here is that minimal Einstein-Aether theory does not modify the well-tested aspects of General Relativity such as solar system tests and black hole physics including gravitational waves.

Kerr-Vaidya type radiating black holes in semi-classical gravity with conformal anomaly

Static black holes in the conformal anomaly-sourced semi-classical General Relativity in four dimensions were extended to rotating, stationary solutions, recently. These quantum-corrected black holes show different features compared to the Kerr black hole and need for further extensions. Here we remove the condition of stationarity and find radiating (Kerr-Vaidya-type) solutions in the same theory augmented with a cosmological constant. As long as the coupling constant $\alpha$ of the $A$-type trace anomaly is non-zero, we show that $i)$ the cosmological constant is bounded from above, i.e $\Lambda \le \frac{3}{4 \alpha}$; $ii)$ static black holes exist but they may not be unique; $iii)$ static black holes do not satisfy the second law of black hole thermodynamics; $iv)$ static black holes may have unstable inner horizons; $v)$ In the nonstationary and axially symmetric case, stability of the event horizon and the second law of thermodynamics black holes are problematic.

Israel-Wilson-Perjes Metrics in a Theory with a Dilaton Field

We are interested in the charged dust solutions of the Einstein field equations in stationary and axially symmetric spacetimes; and inquire if the naked singularities of the Israel-Wilson-Perjes (IWP) metrics can be removed. The answer is negative in four dimensions. We examine whether this negative result can be avoided by adding scalar or dilaton fields. We show that IWP metrics also arise as solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell system with a stealth dilaton field. We determine the IWP metrics completely in terms of one complex function satisfying the Laplace equation. With the inclusion of the stealth dilaton field, it is now possible to add a perfect fluid source. In this case the field equations reduce to a complex cubic equation. Hence this procedure provides interior solutions to each IWP metric; and it is possible to cover all naked singularities inside a compact surface where there is matter distribution.

Integrability of Three Dimensional Gravity Field Equations

We show that the tree dimensional Einstein vacuum field equations with cosmological constant are integrable. Using the $sl(2,R)$ valued soliton connections we obtain the metric of the spacetime in terms of the dynamical variables of the integrable nonlinear partial differential equations.

Kerr-Schild-Kundt Metrics in Generic Gravity Theories with Modified Horndeski Couplings

The Kerr-Schild-Kundt (KSK) metrics are known to be one of the universal metrics in general relativity, which means that they solve the vacuum field equations of any gravity theory constructed from the curvature tensor and its higher-order covariant derivatives. There is yet no complete proof that these metrics are universal in the presence of matter fields such as electromagnetic and/or scalar fields. In order to get some insight into what happens when we extend the "universality theorem" to the case in which the electromagnetic field is present, as a first step, we study the KSK class of metrics in the context of Modified Horndeski theories with Maxwell's field. We obtain exact solutions of these theories representing the $pp$-waves and AdS-plane waves in arbitrary $D$ dimensions.

Nonlocal Ernst Equations

We show that the Ernst equations for stationary axially symmetric Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein - N-abelian Yang-Mills field equations have local and nonlocal reductions. Among these reduced equations the nonlocal Ernst equations are new. We show that a class of these field equations admit reflection symmetry without requiring the asymptotical flatness.

Comment on "Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity in 4-Dimensional Space-Time''

We summarize our proof that the "Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity in Four-Dimensional Spacetime" introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020) does not have consistent field equations, as such the theory does not exist. The proof is given in both the metric and the first order formalisms.

FLRW-Cosmology in Generic Gravity Theories

We prove that for the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric, the field equations of any generic gravity theory in arbitrary dimensions are of the perfect fluid type. The cases of general Lovelock and $\mathcal{F}(R, \mathcal{G})$ theories are given as examples.

Is there a novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in four dimensions?

No! We show that the field equations of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory defined in generic $D>4$ dimensions split into two parts one of which always remains higher dimensional, and hence the theory does not have a non-trivial limit to $D=4$. Therefore, the recently introduced four-dimensional, novel, Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory does not admit an intrinsically four-dimensional definition as such it does not exist in four dimensions. The solutions (the spacetime, the metric) always remain $D>4$ dimensional. As there is no canonical choice of 4 spacetime dimensions out of $D$ dimensions for generic metrics, the theory is not well defined in four dimensions.

Superposition of FLRW Universes

We show that (1) the Einstein field equations with a perfect fluid source admit a nonlinear superposition of two distinct homogenous Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metrics as a solution, (2) the superposed solution is an inhomogeneous geometry in general, (3) it reduces to a homogeneous one in the two asymptotes which are the early and the late stages of the universe as described by two different FLRW metrics, (4) the solution possesses a scale factor inversion symmetry and (5) the solution implies two kinds of topology changes: one during the time evolution of the superposed universe and the other occurring in the asymptotic region of space.

NAT Black Holes

We study some physical properties of black holes in Null Aether Theory (NAT)--a vector-tensor theory of gravity. We first review the black hole solutions in NAT and then derive the first law of black hole thermodynamics. The temperature of the black holes depends on both the mass and the NAT \textquotedblleft charge" of the black holes. The extreme cases where the temperature vanishes resemble the extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m black holes. We also discuss the contribution of the NAT charge to the geodesics of massive and massless particles around the NAT black holes.

Non-Einsteinian Black Holes in Generic 3D Gravity Theories

The Ba\~nados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole metric solves the three-dimensional Einstein's theory with a negative cosmological constant as well as all the generic higher derivative gravity theories based on the metric; as such it is a universal solution. Here, we find, in all generic higher derivative gravity theories, new universal non-Einsteinian solutions obtained as Kerr-Schild type deformations of the BTZ black hole. Among these, the deformed non-extremal BTZ black hole loses its event horizon while the deformed extremal one remains intact as a black hole in any generic gravity theory.

New Classes of Spherically Symmetric, Inhomogeneous Cosmological Models

We present two classes of inhomogeneous, spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Perfect Fluid field equations with cosmological constant generalizing the Vaidya-Shah solution. Some special limits of our solution reduce to the known inhomogeneous charged perfect fluid solutions of the Einstein field equations and under some other limits we obtain new charged and uncharged solutions with cosmological constant. Uncharged solutions in particular represent cosmological models where the universe may undergo a topology change and in between is a mixture of two different Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes with different spatial curvatures. We show that there exist some spacelike surfaces where the Ricci scalar and pressure of the fluid diverge but the mass density of the fluid distribution remains finite. Such spacelike surfaces are known as (sudden) cosmological singularities. We study the behavior of our new solutions in their general form as the radial distance goes to zero and infinity. Finally, we briefly address the null geodesics and apparent horizons associated to the obtained solutions.

Classical Double Copy: Kerr-Schild-Kundt metrics from Yang-Mills Theory

The classical double copy idea relates some solutions of Einstein's theory with those of gauge and scalar field theories. We study the Kerr-Schild-Kundt (KSK) class of metrics in $d$-dimensions in the context of possible new examples of this idea. We first show that it is possible to solve the Einstein-Yang-Mills system exactly using the solutions of a Klein-Gordon type scalar equation when the metric is the $pp$-wave metric which is the simplest member of the KSK class. In the more general KSK class, the solutions of a scalar equation also solve the Yang-Mills, Maxwell and Einstein-Yang-Mills-Maxwell equations exactly albeit with a null fluid source. Hence in the general KSK class, the double copy correspondence is not as clean-cut as in the case of the $pp$-wave. In our treatment all the gauge fields couple to dynamical gravity, and are not treated as test fields. We also briefly study G\"{o}del type metrics along the same lines.

Nonlocal Super Integrable Equations

We present nonlocal integrable reductions of super AKNS coupled equations. By the use of nonlocal reductions of Ablowitz and Musslimani we find new super integrable equations. In particular we introduce nonlocal super NLS equations and the nonlocal super mKdV equations.
