Search for Axion Like Particles produced via the Primakoff process at COMPASS

Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) are well-motivated candidates for dark matter and potential mediators to the dark sector. We present a search for ALPs coupled to photons, based on a reinterpretation of COMPASS data. Using the 2009 dataset consisting of $190~\text{GeV}$ $\pi^-$ and $\mu^-$ beams impinging on a fixed nickel target, we investigate the Primakoff production of ALPs. Due to the high beam energy, ALPs in the MeV mass range are produced with a significant Lorentz boost, leading to strongly collimated decay photons. Consequently, these photons are not spatially resolved by the electromagnetic calorimeter and are instead reconstructed as a single merged cluster. This signature mimics the single-photon signal of Standard Model Primakoff Compton scattering, which was the primary focus of the original COMPASS analysis. By quantifying this potential ALP contamination in the Compton scattering sample, we derive exclusion limits on the ALP-photon coupling $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$ in the mass range $0.2 \lesssim m_a \lesssim 600~\text{MeV}$. Our results exclude couplings $g_{a\gamma\gamma} \gtrsim 10^{-1}~\text{GeV}^{-1}$ at 95% C.L., providing independent constraints on the parameter space that bridges beam dump experiments and high energy colliders. While current collider-based limits remain more stringent, this work establishes a novel reinterpretation framework and provides a baseline for future studies of resolved diphoton states in complementary kinematic regimes, such as Primakoff $\pi^0$ production.

Neutrino nucleus Quasi-Elastic and resonant Neutral Current scatterings with Non-Standard Interactions

As well known, the cross sections of the resonance and Quasi-Elastic (QE) scattering off nucleons depend on quantities known as form factors that describe the nucleon structure. There are alternative approaches to determine the values of these non-perturbative quantities, some of them relying on the Neutral Current (NC) scattering of neutrinos off nucleons. In the presence of NC Non-Standard Interactions (NSI), such derivations must be revisited. The aim of the present paper is to discuss how information on NSI can be extracted by combining alternative approaches for deriving the form factors. We discuss how the KamLAND atmospheric neutrino data with $E_ν<{\rm GeV}$ (used to determine the axial strange form factor $g_A^s$) can already constrain the axial NSI of $ν_τ$ with nucleons. We also argue that if the precision measurement of $ν_μ$ NC QE scattering establishes unexpectedly large vector strange form factor ({\it e.g.,} $F_1^s(Q^2)\sim 0.01$), it will be an indication for nonzero NSI coupling with $u$ and $d$ quarks ($ε_{μμ}^{Au/d}\sim 0.01$). We study the QE and resonance scattering cross sections of $ν_τ$ and $ν_e$ off Argon and show that if their axial NSI is of the order of (but of course below) the present bounds, the deviation of QE cross sections from the SM prediction will be sizable and distinct from the uncertainties induced by the form factors.

Thermal leptogenesis in the presence of helical hypermagnetic fields

One of the major challenges in particle physics and cosmology is understanding why there is an asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the Universe. One possible explanation for this phenomenon is thermal leptogenesis, which involves the addition of at least two right-handed neutrinos (RHNs) to the standard model. Another possible explanation is baryogenesis through the hypermagnetic fields which involves the ${\rm U}_Y(1)$ anomaly and helical hypermagnetic fields in the early Universe. In this paper, after reviewing the thermal leptogenesis and baryogenesis through the ${\rm U}_Y(1)$ anomaly, we investigate the simplest model that combines these two scenarios and explore the parameter space for optimal results. Our results show that the combined scenario permits a specific region of parameter space that is not covered by either one separately. In fact, the minimum required mass scale of the RHN and strength of initial hypermagnetic helicity are reduced by one order of magnitude in our model. Moreover, we find that in the combined scenario, leptogenesis and baryogenesis through the ${\rm U}_Y(1)$ anomaly can either amplify or reduce the effect of each other, i.e., the generated asymmetry, depending on the sign of the helical hypermagnetic fields. Finally, we show the surprising result that a drastic amplification can occur even when the initial abundance of RHN is its equilibrium value for leptogenesis.

Searching for Axial Neutral Current Non-Standard Interactions of neutrinos by DUNE-like experiments

The increasingly precise neutrino experiments raise the hope for searching for new physics through studying the impact of Neutral Current (NC) Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter fields. Neutrino oscillation experiments along with the Elastic Coherent $ν$ Nucleus Scattering (CE$ν$NS) experiments already set strong bounds on all the flavor elements of the "vector" NC NSI. However, "axial" NC NSI can hide from these experiments. We show how a DUNE-like experiment can probe these couplings by studying NC Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events. We find that strong bounds can be set on the axial NC NSI of neutrinos with the $u$, $d$, and $s$ quarks. We show that using both the near and far detectors, a DUNE-like experiment can significantly improve the present bounds on all the flavor elements.

Thermal leptogenesis in nonextensive cosmology

Thermal leptogenesis is a mechanism that explains the observed asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the early universe. In this study, we review the impact of nonextensive Tsallis statistical mechanics on the early universe and study its effect on thermal leptogenesis. The study has found that the use of nonextensive statistical mechanics can affect the production of baryon asymmetry in thermal leptogenesis by modifying the equilibrium abundance of particles, decay, and washout parameters. Also, we show that nonextensive statistical mechanics potentially reduce the required right-handed neutrino mass scale.

Thermal leptogenesis in anisotropic cosmology

There is no evidence that the universe must have been homogeneous and isotropic before the big bang nucleosynthesis. The Bianchi type-I cosmology is the simplest homogeneous but anisotropic cosmology. In this work, we investigate thermal leptogenesis, as a baryogenesis scenario, in the Bianchi type-I cosmology. Our results show that for specific values of the anisotropy, the modified thermal leptogenesis generated more baryon asymmetry than the standard one. In this way, anisotropy can help to achieve low-scale leptogenesis.
