Datta-Das transistor for atomtronic circuits using artificial gauge fields

Spin-dependent electrical injection has found useful applications in storage devices, but fully operational spin-dependent semiconductor electronics remain a challenging task because of weak spin-orbit couplings and/or strong spin relaxations. These limitations are lifted considering atoms instead of electrons or holes as spin carriers. In this emerging field of atomtronics, we demonstrate the equivalent of a Datta-Das transistor using a degenerate Fermi gas of strontium atoms as spin carriers in interaction with a tripod laser-beams scheme. We explore the dependence of spin rotation, and we identify two key control parameters which we interpret as equivalent to the gate-source and drain-source voltages of a field effect transistor. Our finding broadens the spectrum of atomtronics devices for implementation of operational spin-sensitive circuits.

Evolution of an ultracold gas in a non-Abelian gauge fields: Finite temperature effect

We detail the cooling mechanisms of a Fermionic strontium-87 gas in order to study its evolution under a non-Abelian gauge field. In contrast to our previous work reported in Ref. [1], we emphasize here on the finite temperature effect of the gas. In addition, we provide the detail characterization for the efficiency of atoms loading in the cross-dipole trap, the quantitative performance of the evaporative cooling, and the characterization of a degenerate Fermi gas using a Thomas-Fermi distribution.

Wave-packet Dynamics in Synthetic Non-Abelian Gauge Fields

It is generally admitted that in quantum mechanics, the electromagnetic potentials have physical interpretations otherwise absent in classical physics as illustrated by the Aharonov-Bohm effect. In 1984, Berry interpreted this effect as a geometrical phase factor. The same year, Wilczek and Zee generalized the concept of Berry phases to degenerate levels and showed that a non-Abelian gauge field arises in these systems. In sharp contrast with the Abelian case, spatially uniform non-Abelian gauge fields can induce particle noninertial motion. We explore this intriguing phenomenon with a degenerated Fermionic atomic gas subject to a two-dimensional synthetic SU(2) non-Abelian gauge field. We reveal the spin Hall nature of the noninertial dynamic as well as its anisotropy in amplitude and frequency due to the spin texture of the system. We finally draw the similarities and differences of the observed wave packet dynamic and the celebrated Zitterbewegung effect of the relativistic Dirac equation.

Controlled Dropout for Uncertainty Estimation

Uncertainty quantification in a neural network is one of the most discussed topics for safety-critical applications. Though Neural Networks (NNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance for many applications, they still provide unreliable point predictions, which lack information about uncertainty estimates. Among various methods to enable neural networks to estimate uncertainty, Monte Carlo (MC) dropout has gained much popularity in a short period due to its simplicity. In this study, we present a new version of the traditional dropout layer where we are able to fix the number of dropout configurations. As such, each layer can take and apply the new dropout layer in the MC method to quantify the uncertainty associated with NN predictions. We conduct experiments on both toy and realistic datasets and compare the results with the MC method using the traditional dropout layer. Performance analysis utilizing uncertainty evaluation metrics corroborates that our dropout layer offers better performance in most cases.

Optical Wavelength Meter with Machine Learning Enhanced Precision

Diverse applications in photonics and microwave engineering require a means of measurement of the instantaneous frequency of a signal. A photonic implementation typically applies an interferometer equipped with three or more output ports to measure the frequency dependent phase shift provided by an optical delay line. The components constituting the interferometer are prone to impairments which results in erroneous measurements. It is shown that the information to be retrieved is encoded by a three-component vector that lies on a circular cone within a three-dimensional Cartesian object space. The measured data belongs to the image of the object space under a linear map that describes the action of the interferometer. Assisted by a learning algorithm, an inverse map from the image space into the object space is constructed. The inverse map compensates for a variety of impairments while being robust to noise. Simulation results demonstrate that, to the extent the interferometer model captures all significant impairments, a precision limited only by the level of random noise is attainable. A wavelength meter architecture is fabricated on Si3N4 photonic integration platform to prove the method experimentally. Applied to the measured data, greater than an order of magnitude improvement in precision is achieved by the proposed method compared to the conventional method.

Experimental realization of a universal RF photonic integrated circuit

This paper demonstrates the operation of a universal RF photonic circuit that consists of a generalized Mach Zehnder Interferometer architecture with its Nx1 combiner replaced by a NxN optical DFT network. The proposed circuit architecture can be used for SSB modulation, frequency up-conversion/down-conversion, frequency multiplication and phase correlated subcarrier generation based on the choice of output ports and dimension (N) of the circuit. An alternative representation of the circuit is also reported with the aim of a systematic demultiplexing. A transfer matrix approach is used to develop the theoretical predictions which are verified by simulation using industry standard software tool. An integrated circuit based on silicon photonics technology readily available in the laboratory is used for experimental confirmation.

Injection Locking of Optoelectronic Oscillators with Large Delay

The optoelectronic oscillator is a delay line oscillator that leverages optical fiber technology to realize the large delay required for low phase noise systems. Spurious sidemodes are an artifact of the delay line oscillator, yet treatments of injection locking of optoelectronic oscillators have relied on the application of classical injection locking theory valid only for single mode oscillators. The large delay contributed by the optical fiber delay line is accounted for by classical theory only in part through the quality factor Q that captures the round-trip group delay in a neighborhood of the oscillation frequency. This paper presents a new formulation of time delay oscillators subject to injection that describes all the essential features of their dynamics and phase noise. The common assumptions of a single mode oscillator and weak injection are removed. This is important to correctly predict the locking range, the suppression of sidemodes and the phase noise spectrum. The findings of the analysis are validated by experimental measurements provided by an optoelectronic oscillator under injection by an external source.

Circuit design and integration feasibility of a high-resolution broadband on-chip spectral monitor

Up-to-date network telemetry is the key enabler for resource optimization by a variety of means including capacity scaling, fault recovery, network reconfiguration. Reliable optical performance monitoring in general and specifically the monitoring of the spectral profile of WDM signals in fixed- and flex-grid architecture across the entire C-band remains challenging. This article describes a spectrometer circuit architecture along with an original data processing algorithm that combined can measure the spectrum quantitatively across the entire C-band aiming at 1 GHz resolution bandwidth. The circuit is composed of a scanning ring resonator followed by a parallel arrangement of AWGs with interlaced channel spectra. The comb of ring resonances provides the high resolution and the algorithm creates a virtual tuneable AWG that isolates individual resonances of the comb within the flat pass-band of its synthesized channels. The parallel arrangement of AWGs may be replaced by a time multiplexed multi-input port AWG. The feasibility of a ring resonator functioning over whole C-band is experimentally validated. Full tuning of the comb of resonances over a free spectral range is achieved with a high-resolution bandwidth of 1.30 GHz. Due to its maturity and low loss, CMOS compatible silicon nitride is chosen for integration. Additionally, the whole system demonstration is presented using industry standard simulation tool. The architecture is robust to fabrication process variations owing to its data processing approach.

Convolutional Nets for Diabetic Retinopathy Screening in Bangladeshi Patients

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in Bangladesh, and as a result, Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is widespread in the population. DR, an eye illness caused by diabetes, can lead to blindness if it is not identified and treated in its early stages. Unfortunately, diagnosis of DR requires medically trained professionals, but Bangladesh has limited specialists in comparison to its population. Moreover, the screening process is often expensive, prohibiting many from receiving timely and proper diagnosis. To address the problem, we introduce a deep learning algorithm which screens for different stages of DR. We use a state-of-the-art CNN architecture to diagnose patients based on retinal fundus imagery. This paper is an experimental evaluation of the algorithm we developed for DR diagnosis and screening specifically for Bangladeshi patients. We perform this validation study using separate pools of retinal image data of real patients from a hospital and field studies in Bangladesh. Our results show that the algorithm is effective at screening Bangladeshi eyes even when trained on a public dataset which is out of domain, and can accurately determine the stage of DR as well, achieving an overall accuracy of 92.27\% and 93.02\% on two validation sets of Bangladeshi eyes. The results confirm the ability of the algorithm to be used in real clinical settings and applications due to its high accuracy and classwise metrics. Our algorithm is implemented in the application Drishti, which is used to screen for DR in patients living in rural areas in Bangladesh, where access to professional screening is limited.

Photonics probing of DNA specific spatial mass density fluctuations in gut cell nuclei due to total body irradiation via confocal imaging

Abnormalities within cells result in nanoscale structural alterations can be characterized via confocal imaging and quantification of these alterations. Accidental or deliberate exposure to total body irradiation (TBI) have adverse effects on the nuclear DNAs of cells. Here, we study the DNA molecular mass density spatial structural alterations of chromatin in cell nuclei of gut tissues caused by the exposure to standard doses of 4Gy TBI, using the light localization technique called inverse participation ratio (IPR) in confocal images. Results indicate radiation suppresses DNA spatial mass density fluctuations. And hence, reduction and saturation in DNA density fluctuations are observed for different durations of post-irradiation.

Photonics study of probiotic treatment on brain cells exposed to chronic alcoholism using molecular specific nuclear light localization properties via confocal imaging

Molecular specific photonics localization technique, the inverse participation ratio (IPR), is a powerful technique to probe the nanoscale structural alterations due to abnormalities or chronic alcoholism in brain cells using the confocal image. Chronic alcoholism is correlated with medical, behavioral, and psychological problems including brain cell damage. However, probiotics such as Lactobacillus Plantarum has shown the promising result in soothing the human brain. This report, using the Confocal-IPR technique, nano to submicron scale structural abnormalities of the glial cells and the nuclei of alcoholic mice brain in the presence of probiotics. The increase in the structural disorder of alcoholic brain cells while the decrease or normalcy in the structural disorder of brain cells of mice fed with probiotics and alcohol simultaneously indicates that alcohol stimulates probiotics and enhances brain function.

Nanoscale structural alterations in cancer cells to assess anti-cancerous drug effectiveness in cancer treatment using TEM imaging

Understanding the nanoscale structural changes can provide the physical state of cells/tissues. It has been now shown that increases in nanoscale structural alterations are associated with the progress of carcinogenesis in most of the cancer cases, including early carcinogenesis. Anti-cancerous therapies are intended for the growth inhibition of cancer cells; however, it is challenging to detect the efficacy of such drugs in early stages of treatment. A unique method to assess the impact of anti-cancerous drugs on cancerous cells/tissues is to probe the nanoscale structural alterations. In this paper, we study the effect of different anti-cancerous drugs on ovarian tumorigenic cells, using their nanoscale structural alterations as a biomarker. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging on thin cell sections is performed to obtain their nanoscale structures. The degree of nanoscale structural alterations of tumorigenic cells and anti-cancerous drug treated tumorigenic cells are quantified by using the recently developed inverse participation ratio (IPR) technique. Results show an increase in the degree of nanoscale fluctuations in tumorigenic cells relative to non-tumorigenic cells; then a nearly reverse of the degree of fluctuation of tumorigenic cells to that of non-tumorigenic cells, after the anti-cancerous drugs treatment. These results support that the effect of anti-cancerous drugs in cancer treatment can be quantified by using the degree of nanoscale fluctuations of the cells via TEM imaging. Potential applications of the technique for cancer treatment are also discussed.

Cascade circuit architecture for RF-photonic frequency multiplication with minimum RF energy

A general RF-photonic circuit design for implementing frequency multiplication is proposed. The circuit consists of N cascaded differentially-driven Mach-Zehnder modulators biased at the minimum transmission point with a progressive RF phase shift of 180/N applied to each stage. The frequency multiplication factor obtained is 2N. The novelty of the design is the reduced input RF energy required in comparison to the functionally equivalent parallel MZM configuration. Using transfer matrix method, a N=3 architecture is modeled to obtain frequency sextupling. An industry standard simulation tool is used to verify the architectural concepts and analysis. The proposed design requires no optical or electrical filtering nor careful adjustment of the modulation index for correct operation. In addition, the overall intrinsic conversion efficiency of the N=3 cascade circuit is improved by 5 dB over a parallel MZM circuit. Finite MZM extinction and/or phase errors and power imbalances in the electric drive signals are also taken into consideration and their impact on overall performance investigated. The circuit can be integrated in any material platform that offers electro-optic modulators.

Topological edge state engineering with high-frequency electromagnetic radiation

We outline here how strong light-matter interaction can be used to induce quantum phase transition between normal and topological phases in two-dimensional topological insulators. We consider the case of a HgTe quantum well, in which band inversion occurs above a critical value of the well thickness, and demonstrate that coupling between electron states and the $E$ field from an off-resonant linearly polarized laser provides a powerful tool to control topological transitions, even for a thickness of the quantum well that is below the critical value. We also show that topological phase properties of the edge states, including their group velocity, can be tuned in a controllable way by changing the intensity of the laser field. These findings open up the possibility for new experimental means with which to investigate topological insulators and shed new light on topological-insulator-based technologies that are under active discussion.

Enhancement of inherent Raman scattering in dielectric nanostructures with electric and magnetic Mie resonances

Resonantly enhanced Raman scattering in dielectric nanostructures has been recently proven to be an effcient tool for developing nanothermometry and experimental determination of their mode- composition. In this paper, we develop a rigorous analytical theory based on the Green's function approach to calculate the Raman emission from crystalline high-index dielectric nanoparticles. As an example, we consider silicon nanoparticles which have a strong Raman response due to active optical phonon modes. We relate enhancement of Raman signal emission to Purcell effect due to the excitation of Mie modes inside the nanoparticles. We also employ the numerical approach to the calculation of inelastic Raman emission in more sophisticated geometries, which do not allow a straightforward analytical form of the Green's function description. The Raman response from a silicon nanodisk has been analyzed within the proposed method, and the contribution of the various Mie modes has been revealed.

Dy doped BiFeO$_3$ : A Bulk Ceramic with Improved Multiferroic Properties Compared to Nano Counterparts

The synthesis as well as structural, multiferroic and optical characterization of Dy doped BiFeO$_3$ multiferroic ceramic are presented. Bulk polycrystalline Bi$_{0.9}$Dy$_{0.1}$FeO$_3$ sample is synthesized by solid state reaction, while their nano counterparts are prepared using ultrasonic probe sonication technique. Significant improvement of phase purity in the as synthesized samples is observed after the doping of Dy both in bulk Bi$_{0.9}$Dy$_{0.1}$FeO$_3$ sample and corresponding nanoparticles as evidenced from Rietveld refinement. Magnetization measurements using SQUID magnetometer exhibit enhanced magnetic properties for Dy doped bulk Bi$_{0.9}$Dy$_{0.1}$FeO$_3$ ceramic compared to their nanostructured counterparts as well as undoped BiFeO$_3$. Within the applied field range, saturation polarization is observed for Bi$_{0.9}$Dy$_{0.1}$FeO$_3$ bulk ceramic only. As a result, intrinsic ferroelectric behavior is obtained just for this sample. Optical bandgap measurements reveal lower bandgap for Dy doped bulk Bi$_{0.9}$Dy$_{0.1}$FeO$_3$ ceramic compared to that of corresponding nanoparticles and undoped BiFeO$_3$. The outcome of this investigation demonstrates the potential of Dy as a doping element in BiFeO$_3$ that provides a bulk ceramic material with improved multiferroic and optical properties compared to those of corresponding nanoparticles which involve rigorous synthesis procedure.

Saturation magnetization and band gap tuning in BiFeO$_3$ nanoparticles via co-substitution of Gd and Mn

In this investigation, Gd and Mn co-doped Bi$_{0.85}$Gd$_{0.15}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$O$_3$ (x=0.0-0.15) nanoparticles have been prepared to report the influence of co-substitution on their structural, optical, magnetic and electrical properties. Due to simultaneous substitution of Gd and Mn in BiFeO$_3$, the crystal structure has been modified from rhombohedral (R3c) to orthorhombic (Pn21a) and the Fe-O-Fe bond angle and Fe-O bond length have been changed. For Mn doping up to 10 % in Bi$_{0.85}$Gd$_{0.15}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$O$_3$ nanoparticles, the saturation magnetization (Ms) has been enhanced significantly, however, for a further increase of doping up to 15 %, the Ms has started to reduce again. The co-substitution of Gd and Mn in BiFeO$_3$ nanoparticles also demonstrates a strong reduction in the optical band gap energy and electrical resistivity compared to that of undoped BiFeO$_3$.
