Intersecting Surface Operators in 6d Holomorphic Field Theories

We study intersecting surface operators in 6d holomorphic field theories with the aim of unraveling associated quantum integrable structures. We first study the intersections of surface operators in 6d holomorphic Chern-Simons theory on $\mathbb{C}^3$. Computing their correlation function, we find a local operator at the intersection of the surface operators with a form reminiscent of the leading nontrivial term in the quasi-classical expansion of a rational $R$-matrix, as predicted by Costello. We provide evidence that this $R$-matrix-like operator satisfies a Yang-Baxter-type relation. We then derive the associated coproduct of the chiral algebra supported by surface operators from their OPE. We also study intersecting surface operators in 6d holomorphic BF theory and derive the local leading form of the corresponding $R$-matrix-like operator. When this theory is placed on twistor space, where it describes the self-dual sector of 4d Yang-Mills theory, this operator is expected to provide a local building block for quantum integrable structures anticipated in that setting.

Integrable Deformations of the Breitenlohner-Maison Model from 4d Chern-Simons Theory

We derive integrable deformations of the 2d Breitenlohner-Maison (BM) sigma model that describes the stationary, axisymmetric sector of 4d general relativity, as well as higher-rank generalisations thereof, using the framework of 4d Chern-Simons theory. In particular, we consider deformations of the boundary conditions and action of the 4d Cole-Weck model, which lead to deformations of the BM model associated with solutions to the homogeneous and inhomogeneous classical Yang-Baxter equations respectively.

The Yang-Baxter Sigma Model from Twistor Space

We derive a novel two-field four-dimensional integrable field theory (IFT) from 6d holomorphic Chern-Simons theory on twistor space. The four-dimensional IFT depends on a skew-symmetric linear operator acting on a Lie algebra, and when this operator is specialised to a solution of the modified classical Yang-Baxter equation, the IFT develops a semi-local symmetry associated with this solution. The resulting 4d analogue of the Yang-Baxter sigma model is related by symmetry reduction to the well-known 2d Yang-Baxter sigma model. An important implication that we find is the embedding of the equations of motion of the 2d Yang-Baxter sigma model in the anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. The 6d Chern-Simons theory on twistor space can alternatively be symmetry reduced to a 4d Chern-Simons theory configuration with disorder surface defects. The latter realises the Yang-Baxter sigma model, implying a "diamond" for the Yang-Baxter sigma model obtained from twistor space. We also show that the homogeneous 2d Yang-Baxter sigma model can be derived from a limit of our setup.

Asymptotics in the bi-Yang-Baxter Sigma Model

Working in a sector of large charge is a powerful tool to analytically access models that are either strongly coupled or otherwise difficult to solve explicitly. In the context of integrable systems, Volin's method is exactly such a large-charge approach. In this note, we apply this method to the bi-Yang-Baxter deformed $SU(2)$ principal chiral model. Our main result is an explicit expression for the free energy density as an asymptotic expansion. We moreover determine the leading non-perturbative effects both via analytic methods and a resurgence analysis.

5d-4d Correspondence in Twisted M-theory on a Conifold

We study twisted M-theory in a general conifold background, and describe it in terms of a 5d non-commutative Chern-Simons-matter theory, which is equivalent to 5d non-commutative Chern-Simons theory for a supergroup. In an equivalent description as twisted type IIA string theory, the matter degrees of freedom arise from topological strings stretched between stacks of D6-branes. In order to study 5d Chern-Simons-matter theories with a boundary, we first construct and investigate the properties of a 4d non-commutative gauged chiral WZW model. We prove the gauge invariant coupling of this 4d theory to the bulk 5d Chern-Simons theory defined on $\mathbb{R}_+ \times \mathbb{C}^2 $, and further generalize our results to the 5d Chern-Simons-matter theory. We also investigate the toroidal current algebra of the 4d chiral WZW model that arises from radial quantization along one of the complex planes. Finally, we show that a gauged non-commutative chiral 4d WZW model arises from the partition function for quantum 5d non-commutative Chern-Simons theory with boundaries in the BV-BFV formalism, and further generalize this 5d-4d correspondence to the 5d non-commutative Chern-Simons-matter theory for the case of adjoint matter.

R-matrices from Feynman Diagrams in 5d Chern-Simons Theory and Twisted M-theory

In this work, we study the analogues of R-matrices that arise in 5d non-commutative topological-holomorphic Chern-Simons theory, which is known to describe twisted M-theory. We first study the intersections of line and surface operators in 5d Chern-Simons theory, which correspond to M2- and M5-branes, respectively. A Feynman diagram computation of the correlation function of this configuration furnishes an expression reminiscent of an R-matrix derivable from 4d Chern-Simons theory. We explain how this object is related to a Miura operator that is known to realize (matrix-extended) $W_{\infty}$-algebras. For 5d Chern-Simons theory with nonabelian gauge group, we then perform a Feynman diagram computation of coproducts for deformed double current algebras and matrix-extended $W_{\infty}$-algebras from fusions of M2-branes, M5-branes, and M2-M5 intersections.

Generalized Narain Theories Decoded: Discussions on Eisenstein series, Characteristics, Orbifolds, Discriminants and Ensembles in any Dimension

We study a class of newly-introduced CFTs associated with even quadratic forms of general signature, which we call generalized Narain theories. We first summarize the properties of these theories. We then consider orbifolds of these theories, thereby obtaining a large class of non-supersymmetric CFTs with exactly marginal deformations. We then discuss ensemble averages of such theories over their moduli space, and obtain a modular form associated with the quadratic form and an element of the discriminant group. The modular form can be written as a Poincare series, which contains novel invariants of lens spaces and suggests the interpretation of the holographic bulk as a theory of anyons.

Dualities and Discretizations of Integrable Quantum Field Theories from 4d Chern-Simons Theory

We elucidate the relationship between 2d integrable field theories and 2d integrable lattice models, in the framework of the 4d Chern-Simons theory. The 2d integrable field theory is realized by coupling the 4d theory to multiple 2d surface order defects, each of which is then discretized into 1d defects. We find that the resulting defects can be dualized into Wilson lines, so that the lattice of discretized defects realizes integrable lattice models. Our discretization procedure works systematically for a broad class of integrable models (including trigonometric and elliptic models), and uncovers a rich web of new dualities among integrable field theories. We also study the anomaly-inflow mechanism for the integrable models, which is required for the quantum integrability of field theories. By analyzing the anomalies of chiral defects, we derive a new set of bosonization dualities between generalizations of massless Thirring models and coupled Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models. We study an embedding of our setup into string theory, where the thermodynamic limit of the lattice models is realized by polarizations of D-branes.

Duality Origami: Emergent Ensemble Symmetries in Holography and Swampland

We discuss the interrelations between several ideas in quantum gravity -- holography, the Swampland, and the concept of ensemble averaging. To do so, we study ensemble averages of Narain-type theories associated with general even quadratic forms and their holographic duals. We establish the emergence of global symmetries and discuss their consistency with conjectures forbidding such symmetries. We also discuss how the spectral decomposition of Narain partition functions suggests a natural embedding of ensemble averaging within the low-energy limit of certain string compactifications, which in turn allows a connection with the Swampland program.

Chern-Simons Invariants from Ensemble Averages

We discuss ensemble averages of two-dimensional conformal field theories associated with an arbitrary indefinite lattice with integral quadratic form $Q$. We provide evidence that the holographic dual after the ensemble average is the three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory with kinetic term determined by $Q$. The resulting partition function can be written as a modular form, expressed as a sum over the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories on lens spaces. For odd lattices, the dual bulk theory is a spin Chern-Simons theory, and we identify several novel phenomena in this case. We also discuss the holographic duality prior to averaging in terms of Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories.

Matrix Quantization of Classical Nambu Brackets and Super $p$-Branes

We present an explicit matrix algebra quantization of the algebra of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the $n$-torus. That is, we approximate the corresponding classical Nambu brackets using $\mathfrak{sl}(N^{\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil},\mathbb{C})$-matrices equipped with the finite bracket given by the completely anti-symmetrized matrix product, such that the classical brackets are retrieved in the $N\rightarrow \infty$ limit. We then apply this approximation to the super $4$-brane in $9$ dimensions and give a regularized action in analogy with the matrix quantization of the supermembrane. This action exhibits a reduced gauge symmetry that we discuss from the viewpoint of $L_\infty$-algebras in a slight generalization to the construction of Lie $2$-algebras from Bagger--Lambert $3$-algebras.

Integrable Lattice Models and Holography

We study four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory on $D \times \mathbb{C}$ (where $D$ is a disk), which is understood to describe rational solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation from the work of Costello, Witten and Yamazaki. We find that the theory is dual to a boundary theory, that is a three-dimensional analogue of the two-dimensional chiral WZW model. This boundary theory gives rise to a current algebra that turns out to be an "analytically-continued" toroidal Lie algebra. In addition, we show how certain bulk correlation functions of two and three Wilson lines can be captured by boundary correlation functions of local operators in the three-dimensional WZW model. In particular, we reproduce the leading and subleading nontrivial contributions to the rational R-matrix purely from the boundary theory.

4d Chern-Simons Theory as a 3d Toda Theory, and a 3d-2d Correspondence

We show that the four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory studied by Costello, Witten and Yamazaki, is, with Nahm pole-type boundary conditions, dual to a boundary theory that is a three-dimensional analogue of Toda theory with a novel 3d W-algebra symmetry. By embedding four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory in a partial twist of the five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a manifold with corners, we argue that this three-dimensional Toda theory is dual to a two-dimensional topological sigma model with A-branes on the moduli space of solutions to the Bogomolny equations. This furnishes a novel 3d-2d correspondence, which, among other mathematical implications, also reveals that modules of the 3d W-algebra are modules for the quantized algebra of certain holomorphic functions on the Bogomolny moduli space.

Unifying Lattice Models, Links and Quantum Geometric Langlands via Branes in String Theory

We explain how, starting with a stack of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane in type IIA string theory, one can, via T-duality and the topological-holomorphic nature of the relevant worldvolume theories, relate (i) the lattice models realized by Costello's 4d Chern-Simons theory, (ii) links in 3d analytically-continued Chern-Simons theory, (iii) the quantum geometric Langlands correspondence realized by Kapustin-Witten using 4d N = 4 gauge theory and its quantum group modification, and (iv) the Gaitsgory-Lurie conjecture relating quantum groups/affine Kac-Moody algebras to Whittaker D-modules/W-algebras. This furnishes, purely physically via branes in string theory, a novel bridge between the mathematics of integrable systems, geometric topology, geometric representation theory, and quantum algebras.

Boundary N=2 Theory, Floer Homologies, Affine Algebras, and the Verlinde Formula

Generalizing our ideas in [arXiv:1006.3313], we explain how topologically-twisted N=2 gauge theory on a four-manifold with boundary, will allow us to furnish purely physical proofs of (i) the Atiyah-Floer conjecture, (ii) Munoz's theorem relating quantum and instanton Floer cohomology, (iii) their monopole counterparts, and (iv) their higher rank generalizations. In the case where the boundary is a Seifert manifold, one can also relate its instanton Floer homology to modules of an affine algebra via a 2d A-model with target the based loop group. As an offshoot, we will be able to demonstrate an action of the affine algebra on the quantum cohomology of the moduli space of flat connections on a Riemann surface, as well as derive the Verlinde formula.

Branes and Categorifying Integrable Lattice Models

We elucidate how integrable lattice models described by Costello's 4d Chern-Simons theory can be realized via a stack of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane in type IIA string theory, with D0-branes on the D4-brane worldvolume sourcing a meromorphic RR 1-form, and fundamental strings forming the lattice. This provides us with a nonperturbative integration cycle for the 4d Chern-Simons theory, and by applying T- and S-duality, we show how the R-matrix, the Yang-Baxter equation and the Yangian can be categorified, that is, obtained via the Hilbert space of a 6d gauge theory.

Open Gauged Sigma Models, Equivariant Branes, and Equivariant Homological Mirror Symmetry

We describe supersymmetric A-branes and B-branes in open N=(2,2) dynamically gauged nonlinear sigma models (GNLSM), placing emphasis on toric manifold target spaces. For a subset of toric manifolds, these equivariant branes have a mirror description as branes in gauged Landau-Ginzburg models with neutral matter. We then study correlation functions in the topological A-twisted version of the GNLSM, and identify their values with open Hamiltonian Gromov-Witten invariants. Supersymmetry breaking can occur in the A-twisted GNLSM due to nonperturbative open symplectic vortices, and we canonically BRST quantize the mirror theory to analyze this phenomenon.

Little Strings, Quasi-topological Sigma Model on Loop Group, and Toroidal Lie Algebras

We study the ground states and left-excited states of the A_{k-1} N=(2,0) little string theory. Via a theorem by Atiyah [1], these sectors can be captured by a supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model on CP^1 with target space the based loop group of SU(k). The ground states, described by L^2-cohomology classes, form modules over an affine Lie algebra, while the left-excited states, described by chiral differential operators, form modules over a toroidal Lie algebra. We also apply our results to analyze the 1/2 and 1/4 BPS sectors of the M5-brane worldvolume theory.
