DTM: Deterministic Approaches for Black-box Test Suite Minimization with Tree-based Similarity

Black-box Test Suite Minimization (TSM) techniques reduce testing costs without requiring access to production code. However, existing effective approaches rely on evolutionary search algorithms, introducing non-determinism that produces inconsistent results across runs, undermining reliability in automated testing pipelines. We propose DTM (Deterministic approaches for black-box Test suite Minimization), a framework that ensures deterministic test suite reduction while preserving effectiveness and efficiency. DTM converts test cases into Abstract Syntax Trees and computes pairwise similarities using four tree-based measures. For subset selection, it employs three deterministic algorithms: Modified Minimum Spanning Tree, Spectral Clustering, and Dynamic Programming. We evaluated DTM on 16 Java projects from Defects4J with 661 buggy versions. Experimental results show that DTM achieved an average accuracy of 0.74 with an execution time of just 0.98 minutes, outperforming all state-of-the-art approaches. Moreover, it consistently produced identical results across multiple runs, ensuring full determinism.

Method-level Change-proneness: A Better Metric for Black-box Test Suite Minimization

Test Suite Minimization (TSM) reduces the size of test suites while preserving their fault detection capability. In black-box TSM, reduction is performed without analyzing production code. While several black-box TSM approaches have explored metrics like test logs or test similarity, those often suffer from scalability and efficiency issues. On the other hand, change-proneness (CP), recently emerged as an efficient and scalable alternative metric, has only been applied at class level. To accurately identify fault-revealing test cases, we propose CP at finer-grained method-level and implement Method-level Change-proneness based Test-suite Minimization (MCTM). MCTM first calculates CP for each method from version control metadata, then determines the dependency between test cases and methods by analyzing the test-code call-graph. Next, it scores the association between test cases and their invoked methods using statistical measures such as Average, Geometric Mean etc. Finally, test cases with the highest scores are selected to form the reduced suite. Evaluation on 15 open-source Java projects with 635 buggy versions shows MCTM achieves 0.93 accuracy and 0.94 fault detection rate on average, significantly outperforming class-level CP and similarity-based approaches while maintaining superior efficiency.

Model, Analyze, and Comprehend User Interactions within a Social Media Platform

In this study, we propose a novel graph-based approach to model, analyze and comprehend user interactions within a social media platform based on post-comment relationship. We construct a user interaction graph from social media data and analyze it to gain insights into community dynamics, user behavior, and content preferences. Our investigation reveals that while 56.05% of the active users are strongly connected within the community, only 0.8% of them significantly contribute to its dynamics. Moreover, we observe temporal variations in community activity, with certain periods experiencing heightened engagement. Additionally, our findings highlight a correlation between user activity and popularity showing that more active users are generally more popular. Alongside these, a preference for positive and informative content is also observed where 82.41% users preferred positive and informative content. Overall, our study provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and managing online communities, leveraging graph-based techniques to gain valuable insights into user behavior and community dynamics.
