Long-time behavior of the heterogeneous SIRS epidemiological model

We study the long-time behavior of solutions of the SIRS model, a reaction-diffusion system that appears in epidemiology to describe the spread of epidemics. We allow the system to be heterogeneous periodic. Under some hypotheses on the coefficients, we prove that the solutions converge to an equilibrium that we identify and establish some estimates on the speed of propagation.

Displacement smoothness of entropic optimal transport

The function that maps a family of probability measures to the solution of the dual entropic optimal transport problem is known as the Schr\"odinger map. We prove that when the cost function is $\mathcal{C}^{k+1}$ with $k\in \mathbb{N}^*$ then this map is Lipschitz continuous from the $L^2$-Wasserstein space to the space of $\mathcal{C}^k$ functions. Our result holds on compact domains and covers the multi-marginal case. We also include regularity results under negative Sobolev metrics weaker than Wasserstein under stronger smoothness assumptions on the cost. As applications, we prove displacement smoothness of the entropic optimal transport cost and the well-posedness of certain Wasserstein gradient flows involving this functional, including the Sinkhorn divergence and a multi-species system.

Nesterov's method with decreasing learning rate leads to accelerated stochastic gradient descent

We present a coupled system of ODEs which, when discretized with a constant time step/learning rate, recovers Nesterov's accelerated gradient descent algorithm. The same ODEs, when discretized with a decreasing learning rate, leads to novel stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithms, one in the convex and a second in the strongly convex case. In the strongly convex case, we obtain an algorithm superficially similar to momentum SGD, but with additional terms. In the convex case, we obtain an algorithm with a novel order $k^{3/4}$ learning rate. We prove, extending the Lyapunov function approach from the full gradient case to the stochastic case, that the algorithms converge at the optimal rate for the last iterate of SGD, with rate constants which are better than previously available.

A differential approach to the multi-marginal Schr{\"o}dinger system

We develop an elementary and self-contained differential approach, in an $L^\infty$ setting, for well-posedness (existence, uniqueness and smooth dependence with respect to the data) for the multi-marginal Schr{\"o}dinger system which arises in the entropic regularization of optimal transport problems.

Nonlinear systems coupled through multi-marginal transport problems

In this paper, we introduce a dynamical urban planning model. This leads us to study a system of nonlinear equations coupled through multi-marginal optimal transport problems. A simple case consists in solving two equations coupled through the solution to the Monge-Amp{\`e}re equation. We show that the Wasserstein gradient flow theory provides a very good framework to solve this highly nonlinear system. At the end, an uniqueness result is presented in dimension one based on convexity arguments.

Simulation of multiphase porous media flows with minimizing movement and finite volume schemes

The Wasserstein gradient flow structure of the PDE system governing multiphase flows in porous media was recently highlighted in [C. Canc\`es, T. O. Gallou\"et, and L. Monsaingeon, {\it Anal. PDE} 10(8):1845--1876, 2017]. The model can thus be approximated by means of the minimizing movement (or JKO) scheme, that we solve thanks to the ALG2-JKO scheme proposed in [J.-D. Benamou, G. Carlier, and M. Laborde, {\it ESAIM Proc. Surveys}, 57:1--17, 2016]. The numerical results are compared to a classical upstream mobility Finite Volume scheme, for which strong stability properties can be established.

On cross-diffusion systemsfor two populations subject to a common congestion effect

In this paper, we investigate the existence of solution for systems of Fokker-Planck equations coupled through a common nonlinear congestion. Two different kinds of congestion are considered: a porous media congestion or \textit{soft} congestion and the \textit{hard} congestion given by the constraint $\rho_1+\rho_2 \leqslant 1$. We show that these systems can be seen as gradient flows in a Wasserstein product space and then we obtain a constructive method to prove the existence of solutions. Therefore it is natural to apply it for numerical purposes and some numerical simulations are included.

An unbalanced Optimal Transport splitting scheme for general advection-reaction-diffusion problems

In this paper, we show that unbalanced optimal transport provides a convenient framework to handle reaction and diffusion processes in a unified metric framework. We use a constructive method, alternating minimizing movements for the Wasserstein distance and for the Fisher-Rao distance, and prove existence of weak solutions for general scalar reaction-diffusion-advection equations. We extend the approach to systems of multiple interacting species, and also consider an application to a very degenerate diffusion problem involving a Gamma-limit. Moreover, some numerical simulations are included.

A splitting method for nonlinear diffusions with nonlocal, nonpotential drifts

We prove an existence result for nonlinear diffusion equations in the presence of a nonlocal density-dependent drift which is not necessarily potential. The proof is constructive and based on the Helmholtz decomposition of the drift and a splitting scheme. The splitting scheme combines transport steps by the divergence-free part of the drift and semi-implicit minimization steps \`a la Jordan-Kinderlherer-Otto to deal with the potential part.

On some non linear evolution systems which are perturbations of Wasserstein gradient flows

This paper presents existence and uniqueness results for a class of parabolic systems with non linear diffusion and nonlocal interaction. These systems can be viewed as regular perturbations of Wasserstein gradient flows. Here we extend results known in the periodic case to the whole space and on a smooth bounded domain. Existence is obtained using a semi-implicit Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme and uniqueness follows from a displacement convexity argument.

On systems of continuity equations with nonlinear diffusion and nonlocal drifts

This paper is devoted to existence and uniqueness results for classes of nonlinear diffusion equations (or systems) which may be viewed as regular perturbations of Wasserstein gradient flows. First, in the case. where the drift is a gradient (in the physical space), we obtain existence by a semi-implicit Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme. Then, in the nonpotential case, we derive existence from a regularization procedure and parabolic energy estimates. We also address the uniqueness issue by a displacement convexity argument.
