Consistency conditions for O-plane unsmearing from second-order perturbation theory

Scale-separated AdS compactifications of string theory can be constructed at the two-derivative supergravity level in the presence of smeared orientifold planes. The unsmearing corrections are known to leading order in the large volume, weak coupling limit. However, first-order perturbative approximations of non-linear problems can often produce spurious solutions, which are only weeded out by additional consistency conditions imposed at higher orders. In this work, we revisit the unsmearing procedure and present consistency conditions obtained from the second order warp factor and dilaton equations. This requires proper treatment of the near-source singularities. The resulting conditions appear as integral constraints on various non-linear combinations of the first order corrections, which we argue can generally be satisfied by appropriate choice of integration constants of the leading-order solutions. This provides a non-trivial consistency check for the perturbative unsmearing procedure and supports the existence of scale-separated AdS vacua in string theory.

A note on integrability loss in fuzzball geometries

We study the dynamics of certain string configurations in a class of fivebrane supertube backgrounds. In the decoupling limit of the fivebranes, these solutions are known to admit an exact description in worldsheet string theory and string propagation is integrable. For the asymptotically flat solutions, we prove, by using analytic tools of classical Hamiltonian systems, the non-integrability of classical string motion. This suggests that string dynamics in circular supertube geometries exhibit a regime of chaotic behaviour.

Obstacles for dS in Supersymmetric Theories

We present two types of obstacles for constructing de Sitter space in supersymmetric theories that appear as effective theories of quantum gravity. The first obstacle concerns de Sitter critical points in extended supergravity with charged massless gravitini. We show that all such critical points have a Hubble scale of the same order or above the UV cutoff dictated by the magnetic Weak Gravity Conjecture. The second obstacle concerns the dynamics of the goldstino in models with non-linearly realized supersymmetry, such as string models involving anti-branes. We show, using an exact renormalization group approach, that the goldstino sector has an instability toward the formation of condensates, which may have important qualitative consequences for de Sitter constructions involving anti-brane uplifts.

Anti-brane uplift instability from goldstino condensation

We investigate the possible appearance of composite states of the goldstino in models with four-dimensional non-linear supersymmetry and we provide a description of their dynamics in terms of a K\"ahler potential and a superpotential. Our analysis shows that the critical point corresponding to the Volkov-Akulov model is unstable. Similarly, we find that the uplifted stable de Sitter critical point of the KKLT model is shifted and acquires a tachyonic instability. Our findings indicate the existence of a potentially dangerous instability shared by all anti-brane uplifts.

O6-plane backreaction on scale-separated Type IIA AdS$_3$ vacua

We evaluate the backreaction of O6-planes in scale-separated $\text{AdS}_3$ flux vacua of massive Type IIA. Using the appropriate flux scaling we show that the corrections to the various background fields and moduli are controlled and subleading when going from smeared to localized sources. Similarly, the backreaction corrections to the scalar potential are parametrically small in the scale-separation limit, assuming always that the near-O6-plane singularities will find a resolution within string theory, even in the presence of a Romans mass. Our analysis is based on the equations of motion and therefore applies also to the non-supersymmetric vacua.

The unbearable lightness of charged gravitini

We prove that charged gravitini cannot have parametrically small or vanishing Lagrangian mass in de Sitter vacua of extended supergravity while respecting the magnetic weak gravity conjecture. This places large classes of de Sitter solutions of gauged supergravity in the swampland, including all known stable solutions of the N=2 theory. We illustrate this result by analyzing a variety of de Sitter critical points of N=2 matter-coupled supergravity that also include new stable de Sitter solutions. Our results provide concrete evidence that (quasi) de Sitter with charged light gravitini should belong to the swampland, which also strongly resonates with the festina lente bound.

Three-dimensional flux vacua from IIB on co-calibrated G2 orientifolds

We derive the 3D N=1 superpotential for the closed string sector of type IIB supergravity on toroidal O5 orientifolds with co-calibrated G2 structure and RR background flux. We find that such compactifications can provide full closed string moduli stabilization on supersymmetric AdS$_3$ vacua, and once we include brane-supersymmetry-breaking we also find indication for the existence of classical 3D de Sitter solutions. The latter however are rather difficult to reconcile with the shape moduli stabilization and flux quantization. We also discuss the possibility of achieving scale separation in AdS$_3$ and dS$_3$ vacua, but such effects seems to be hindered by the geometric flux quantization.

Effective Theories as Truncated Trans-Series and Scale Separated Compactifications

We study the possibility of realizing scale-separated type IIB Anti-de Sitter and de Sitter compactifications within a controlled effective field theory regime defined by low-energy and large (but scale-separated) compactification volume. The approach we use views effective theories as truncations of the full quantum equations of motion expanded in a trans-series around this asymptotic regime. By studying the scalings of all possible perturbative and non-perturbative corrections we identify the effects that have the right scaling to allow for the desired solutions. In the case of Anti-de Sitter, we find agreement with KKLT-type scenarios, and argue that non-perturbative brane-instantons wrapping four-cycles (or similarly scaling effects) are essentially the only ingredient that allows for scale separated solutions. We also comment on the relation of these results to the AdS swampland conjectures. For the de Sitter case we find that we are forced to introduce an infinite number of relatively unsuppressed corrections to the equations of motion, leading to a breakdown of effective theory. This suggests that if de Sitter vacua exist in the string landscape, they should not be thought of as residing within the same effective theory as the AdS or Minkowski compactifications, but rather as defining a separate asymptotic regime, presumably related to the others by a duality transformation.

de Sitter Vacua in the String landscape: La Petite Version

In this review we argue that four-dimensional effective field theory descriptions with de Sitter isometries are allowed in the presence of time-dependent internal degrees of freedom in type IIB string landscape. Both moduli stabilizations and time-independent Newton constants are possible in such backgrounds. However once the time-dependences are switched off, there appear no possibilities of effective field theory descriptions and these backgrounds are in the swampland.

How a four-dimensional de Sitter solution remains outside the swampland

We argue that, in the presence of time-dependent fluxes and quantum corrections, four-dimensional de Sitter solutions should appear in the type IIB string landscape and not in the swampland. Our construction considers generic choices of local and non-local quantum terms and satisfies the no-go and the swampland criteria, the latter being recently upgraded using the trans-Planckian cosmic censorship. Interestingly, both time-independent Newton constant and moduli stabilization may be achieved in such backgrounds even in the presence of time-dependent fluxes and internal spaces. However, once the time-dependence is switched off, any four-dimensional solution with de Sitter isometries appears to have no simple effective field theory descriptions and is back in the swampland.

de Sitter Vacua in the String Landscape

The late-time behavior of our universe is one of accelerated expansion, or that of a de Sitter space, and therefore motivates us to look for time-dependent backgrounds. Finding such backgrounds in string theory has always been a challenging problem. An even harder problem is to find time-dependent backgrounds that allow positive dark energies. As a first step to handle such scenarios, we study a time-dependent background in type IIB theory, with four-dimensional de Sitter isometries, by uplifting it to M-theory and then realizing it as a coherent, or squeezed-coherent, state over an appropriate solitonic configuration. While classically such a background does not solve the equations of motion, the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equations reveal that there are deeper issues that may even prohibit a solution to exist at the quantum level, as long as the internal space remains time-independent. A more generic analysis is then called for, where both the effective four-dimensional space-time, the internal space, and the background fluxes are all time-dependent. We study in details such a background by including perturbative and non-perturbative as well as local and non-local quantum terms. Our analysis reveals a distinct possibility of the emergence of a four-dimensional positive curvature space-time with de Sitter isometries and time-independent Newton's constant in the landscape of type IIB string theory. We argue how the no-go and the swampland criteria are avoided in generating such a background, and compare it with other possibilities involving backgrounds with time-dependent Newton constants. These time-varying Newton constant backgrounds typically lead to unavoidable late time singularities, amongst other issues.

Axion Hilltops, Kahler Modulus Quintessence and the Swampland Criteria

We study the interplay between extrema of axion potentials, Kahler moduli stabilization and the swampland criteria. We argue that moving away from the minima of non-perturbatively generated axion potentials can lead to a runaway behavior of moduli that govern the couplings in the effective field theory. The proper inclusion of these degrees of freedom resolves the conflict between periodic axion potentials and the gradient de Sitter criterion, without the need to invoke the refined de Sitter criterion. We investigate the possibility of including this runaway direction as a model of quintessence that satisfies the swampland criteria. Using a single non-perturbative effect, the axionic maximum provides a runaway direction that is unstable in the axion directions, sensitive to initial conditions and too steep to allow for a Hubble time of expansion without violating the field excursion criterion. Adding a second non-perturbative effect generates a saddle point in the potential, which solves the steepness problem and improves the initial conditions problem although some fine-tuning remains required.

Quantum Corrections and the de Sitter Swampland Conjecture

Recently a swampland criterion has been proposed that rules out de Sitter vacua in string theory. Such a criterion should hold at all points in the field space and especially at points where the system is on-shell. However there has not been any attempt to examine the swampland criterion against explicit equations of motion. In this paper we study four-dimensional de Sitter and quasi-de Sitter solutions using dimensionally reduced M-theory. While on one hand all classical sources that could allow for solutions with de Sitter isometries are ruled out, the quantum corrections, on the other hand, are found to allow for de Sitter solutions provided certain constraints are satisfied. A careful study however shows that generically such a constrained system does not allow for an effective field theory description in four-dimensions. Nevertheless, if some hierarchies between the various quantum pieces could be found, certain solutions with an effective field theory description might exist. Such hierarchies appear once some mild time dependence is switched on, in which case certain quasi-de Sitter solutions may be found without a violation of the swampland criterion.

Non-Kahler Deformed Conifold, Ultra-Violet Completion and Supersymmetric Constraints in the Baryonic Branch

Gravity duals for a class of UV complete minimally supersymmetric non-conformal gauge theories require deformed conifolds with fluxes. However these manifolds do not allow for the standard Kahler or conformally Kahler metrics on them, instead the metrics are fully non-Kahler. We take a generic such configuration of a non-Kahler deformed conifold with fluxes and ask what constraints do supersymmetry impose in the Baryonic branch. We study the supersymmetry conditions and show that for the correct choices of the vielbeins and the complex structure all the equations may be consistently solved. The constraints now lead not only to the known cases in the literature but also to some new backgrounds. We also show how geometric features of these backgrounds, including the overall warp factor and the resolution parameters, can be seen on the field theory side from perturbative `probe-brane' type calculations by Higgsing the theory and studying one-loop 4-point functions of vector and chiral multiplets. Finally we discuss how UV completions of these gauge theories may be seen from our set-up, both from type IIB as well as from the T-dual type IIA brane constructions.

Renormalization Group Flow, Stability, and Bulk Viscosity in a Large N Thermal QCD Model

The ultraviolet completion of a large N QCD model requires introducing new degrees of freedom at certain scale so that the UV behavior may become asymptotically conformal with no Landau poles and no UV divergences of Wilson loops. These UV degrees of freedom are represented by certain anti-branes arranged on the blown-up sphere of a warped resolved conifold in a way that they are separated from the other set of branes that control the IR behavior of the theory. This separation of the branes and the anti-branes creates instability in the theory. Further complications arise from the curvature of the ambient space. We show that, despite these analytical hurdles, stability may still be achieved by switching on appropriate world-volume fluxes on the branes. The UV degrees of freedom, on the other hand, modify the RG flow in the model. We discuss this in details by evaluating the flow from IR confining to UV conformal. Finally we lay down a calculational scheme to study bulk viscosity which, in turn, would signal the inherent non-conformality in this model.

Fermions on the Anti-Brane: Higher Order Interactions and Spontaneously Broken Supersymmetry

It has been recently argued that inserting a probe anti-D3-brane in a flux background breaks supersymmetry spontaneously instead of explicitly, as previously thought. In this paper we argue that such spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry persists even when the probe anti-D3-brane is kept in a curved background with an internal space that doesn't have to be a Calabi-Yau manifold. To show this we take a specific curved background generated by fractional three-branes and fluxes on a non-Kahler resolved conifold where supersymmetry breaking appears directly from certain world-volume fermions becoming massive. In fact this turns out to be a generic property even if we change the dimensionality of the anti-brane, or allow higher order fermionic interactions on the anti-brane. We argue for the former by taking a probe anti-D7-brane in a flux background and demonstrate the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry using world-volume fermions. We argue for the latter by constructing an all order fermionic action for the anti-D3-brane from which the spontaneous nature of supersymmetry breaking can be demonstrated by bringing it to a kappa-symmetric form.

Non-Kahler Resolved Conifold, Localized Fluxes in M-Theory and Supersymmetry

The known supergravity solution for wrapped D5-branes on the two-cycle of a Kahler resolved conifold is in general ISD but not supersymmetric, with the supersymmetry being broken by the presence of (1, 2) fluxes. However if we allow a non-Kahler metric on the resolved conifold, supersymmetry can easily be restored. The vanishing of the (1, 2) fluxes here corresponds to, under certain conformal rescalings of the metric, the torsion class constraints. We construct a class of explicit non-Kahler metrics on the resolved conifold satisfying the constraints. All this can also be studied from M-theory, where the fluxes and branes become non-localized G-fluxes on deformed Taub-NUT spaces. Interestingly, the gauge fluctuations on the wrapped D5-branes appear now as localized G-fluxes in M-theory. These localized fluxes are related to certain harmonic two-forms that are normalizable. We compute these forms explicitly and discuss how new constraints on the geometry of the non-Kahler manifolds may appear from M-theory considerations.
