Conjugacy invariants and rigidity in Garside groups: a uniformity phenomenon

Consider an element~$x$ of a Garside group which is rigid in the sense of Garside-theory. Let $SC(x)$ be the set of rigid conjugates of~$x$ -- this is a well-known characteristic subset of the conjugacy class of~$x$. We present computational evidence that the sequence $( |SC(x^n)| )_{n\in\mathbb N}$ is not only bounded, but in fact periodic, and that there is a bound on the length of the period which depends only on the underlying group and its Garside structure. We prove this result in the special case of the circular Garside groups, including the 2-generator Artin groups with their classical and dual structures (where we prove that the sequence is always constant), and in the case of the dual $4$-strand braid group.

Morse elements in Garside groups are strongly contracting

We prove that in the Cayley graph of any braid group modulo its center $B_n/Z(B_n)$, equipped with Garside's generating set, the axes of all pseudo-Anosov braids are strongly contracting. More generally, we consider a Garside group $G$ of finite type with cyclic center. We prove that in the Cayley graph of $G/Z(G)$, equipped with the Garside generators, the axis of any Morse element is strongly contracting. As a consequence, we prove that Morse elements act loxodromically on the additional length graph of $G$.

Property $R_\infty$ for some spherical and affine Artin-Tits groups

Let $n\ge2$. In this note we give a short uniform proof of property $R_\infty$ for the Artin-Tits groups of spherical types $A_n$, $B_n$, $D_4$, $I_2(m)$ ($m\ge3$), their pure subgroups, and for the Artin-Tits groups of affine types $\widetilde A_{n-1}$ and $\widetilde C_n$. In particular, we provide an alternative proof of a recent result of Dekimpe, Gon\c{c}alves and Ocampo, who established property $R_{\infty}$ for pure Artin braid groups.

Euclidean Artin-Tits groups are acylindrically hyperbolic

In this paper we show the statement in the title. To any Garside group of finite type, Wiest and the author associated a hyperbolic graph called the \emph{additional length graph} and they used it to show that central quotients of Artin-Tits groups of spherical type are acylindrically hyperbolic. In general, a euclidean Artin-Tits group is not \emph{a priori} a Garside group but McCammond and Sulway have shown that it embeds into an \emph{infinite-type} Garside group which they call a \emph{crystallographic Garside group}. We associate a \emph{hyperbolic} additional length graph to this crystallographic Garside group and we exhibit elements of the euclidean Artin-Tits group which act loxodromically and WPD on this hyperbolic graph.

Curve graphs for Artin-Tits groups of type $B$, $\widetilde A$ and $\widetilde C$ are hyperbolic

The \emph{graph of irreducible parabolic subgroups} is a combinatorial object associated to an Artin-Tits group $A$ defined so as to coincide with the curve graph of the $(n+1)$-times punctured disk when $A$ is Artin's braid group on $(n+1)$ strands. In this case, it is a hyperbolic graph, by the celebrated Masur-Minsky's theorem. Hyperbolicity for more general Artin-Tits groups is an important open question. In this paper, we give a partial affirmative answer. For $n\geqslant 3$, we prove that the graph of irreducible parabolic subgroups associated to the Artin-Tits group of spherical type $B_n$ is also isomorphic to the curve graph of the $(n+1)$-times punctured disk, hence it is hyperbolic. For $n\geqslant 2$, we show that the graphs of irreducible parabolic subgroups associated to the Artin-Tits groups of euclidean type $\widetilde A_n$ and $\widetilde C_n$ are isomorphic to some subgraphs of the curve graph of the $(n+2)$-times punctured disk which are not quasi-isometrically embedded. We prove nonetheless that these graphs are hyperbolic.

Hyperbolic structures for Artin-Tits groups of spherical type

The goal of this mostly expository paper is to present several candidates for hyperbolic structures on irreducible Artin-Tits groups of spherical type and to elucidate some relations between them. Most constructions are algebraic analogues of previously known hyperbolic structures on Artin braid groups coming from natural actions of these groups on curve graphs and (modified) arc graphs of punctured disks.

Acylindrical hyperbolicity and Artin-Tits groups of spherical type

We prove that, for any irreducible Artin-Tits group of spherical type $G$, the quotient of $G$ by its center is acylindrically hyperbolic. This is achieved by studying the additional length graph associated to the classical Garside structure on $G$, and constructing a specific element $x_G$ of $G/Z(G)$ whose action on the graph is loxodromic and WPD in the sense of Bestvina-Fujiwara; following Osin, this implies acylindrical hyperbolicity. Finally, we prove that "generic" elements of $G$ act loxodromically, where the word "generic" can be understood in either of the two common usages: as a result of a long random walk or as a random element in a large ball in the Cayley graph.

Curve complexes and Garside groups

We present a simple construction which associates to every Garside group a metric space, called the additional length complex, on which the group acts. These spaces share important features with curve complexes: they are $\delta$-hyperbolic, infinite, and typically locally infinite graphs. We conjecture that, apart from obvious counterexamples, additional length complexes are always of infinite diameter. We prove this conjecture for the classical example of braid groups $(B_n,\Delta)$; moreover, in this framework, reducible and periodic braids act elliptically, and at least some pseudo-Anosov braids act loxodromically. We conjecture that for $B_n$, the additional length complex is actually quasi-isometric to the curve complex of the $n$ times punctured disk.

Garside-theoretic analysis of Burau representations

We establish relations between both the classical and the dual Garside structures of the braid group and the Burau representation. Using the classical structure, we formulate a non-vanishing criterion for the Burau representation of the 4-strand braid group. In the dual context, it is shown that the Burau representation for arbitrary braid index is injective when restricted to the set of \emph{simply-nested braids}.

Dual Garside structure and reducibility of braids

Benardete, Gutierrez and Nitecki showed an important result which relates the geometrical properties of a braid, as a homeomorphism of the punctured disk, to its algebraic Garside-theoretical properties. Namely, they showed that if a braid sends a curve to another curve, then the image of this curve after each factor of the left normal form of the braid (with the classical Garside structure) is also standard. We provide a new simple, geometric proof of the result by Benardete-Gutierrez-Nitecki, which can be easily adapted to the case of the dual Garside structure of braid groups, with the appropriate definition of standard curves in the dual setting. This yields a new algorithm for determining the Nielsen-Thurston type of braids.

Fast algorithmic Nielsen-Thurston classification of four-strand braids

We give an algorithm which decides the Nielsen-Thurston type of a given four-strand braid. The complexity of our algorithm is quadratic with respect to word length. The proof of its validity is based on a result which states that for a reducible 4-braid which is as short as possible within its conjugacy class (short in the sense of Garside), reducing curves surrounding three punctures must be round or almost round.
