Determination of the weak phase gamma=arg(V_ub^*)

Various strategies for extracting or constraining the weak phase gamma with controlled theoretical uncertainties are reviewed. Measurements of the rates for the hadronic decays B^+- -> pi K provide largely model-independent information on gamma. Hadronic uncertainties enter only at the level of nonfactorizable contributions to the decay amplitudes that are power-suppressed in Lambda/m_b and, simultaneously, violate SU(3) flavor symmetry or are doubly Cabibbo suppressed. In addition, these decays have a rich potential for probing physics beyond the Standard Model. Alternative proposals for learning gamma are also discussed briefly.

Model-independent information on gamma from B^+- -> pi K Decays

Measurements of the rates for the hadronic decays B^+- -> pi K can be used to derive information on the weak phase gamma=arg(V_ub^*) in a largely model-independent way. Hadronic uncertainties can be reduced to the level of nonfactorizable contributions to the decay amplitudes that are power-suppressed in Lambda/m_b and, in addition, either violate SU(3) flavor symmetry or are doubly Cabibbo suppressed. Various strategies to obtain bounds on gamma and to extract its value with small theoretical uncertainty are described. The potential of B^+- -> pi K decays for probing physics beyond the Standard Model is also discussed.

Large Delta(I)=3/2 Contribution to epsilon'/epsilon in Supersymmetry

We show that in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model gluino box diagrams can yield a large Delta(I)=3/2 contribution to s->d+q(bar)+q FCNC processes, which may induce a sizable CP-violating contribution to the I=2 isospin amplitude in K->pi+pi decays. This contribution only requires moderate mass splitting between the right-handed up- and down-squarks, and persists for squark masses of order 1 TeV. Taking into account current bounds on Im(delta_{sd}^{LL}) from K-K(bar) mixing, the resulting contribution to epsilon'/epsilon could be an order of magnitude larger than the measured value.

Exploring the Weak Phase gamma in B^+- -> pi K Decays

Measurements of the rates for the hadronic decays B^+- -> pi K along with the CP-averaged B^+- -> pi^+- pi^0 branching ratio can be used to bound and extract the weak phase gamma=-arg(V_ub). Using preliminary CLEO data, we obtain the bounds |gamma|>93 degrees at 1 sigma, and |gamma|>71 degrees at 90 % confidence level.

Borel summation and momentum-plane analyticity in perturbative QCD

We derive a compact expression for the Borel sum of a QCD amplitude in terms of the inverse Mellin transform of the corresponding Borel function. The result allows us to investigate the momentum-plane analyticity properties of the Borel-summed Green functions in perturbative QCD. An interesting connection between the asymptotic behaviour of the Borel transform and the Landau singularities in the momentum plane is established. We consider for illustration the polarization function of massless quarks and the resummation of one-loop renormalon chains in the large-$β_0$ limit, but our conclusions have a more general validity.

Model-Independent Analysis of B -> pi K Decays and Bounds on the Weak Phase gamma

A general parametrization of the amplitudes for the rare two-body decays B -> pi K is introduced, which makes maximal use of theoretical constraints arising from flavour symmetries of the strong interactions and the structure of the low-energy effective weak Hamiltonian. With the help of this parametrization, a model-independent analysis of the branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries in the various B -> pi K decay modes is performed, and the impact of hadronic uncertainties on bounds on the weak phase gamma = arg(Vub*) is investigated.

Determination of the Weak Phase gamma from Rate Measurements in B^+- -> pi K, pi pi Decays

A method is described which, under the assumption of SU(3) symmetry, allows one to determine the angle gamma=Arg(Vub^*) of the unitarity triangle from time-independent measurements of the branching ratios for the decays B^+ -> pi^0 K^+ and B^- -> pi^0 K^-, as well as of the CP-averaged branching ratios for the decays B^+- -> pi^+- K^0 and B^+- -> pi^+- pi^0. The effects of electroweak penguin operators are included in a model-independent way, and SU(3)-breaking corrections are accounted for in the factorization approximation.

Theoretical Status of B -> Xs gamma Decays

We review the theoretical understanding of the branching ratio and photon-energy spectrum in B -> Xs gamma decays at next-to-leading order in QCD, including consistently the effects of Fermi motion. For the Standard Model, we obtain B(B -> Xs gamma)=(3.29 +- 0.33)*10^{-4} for the total branching ratio, and B(B -> Xs gamma)=(2.85+0.34-0.40)*10^{-4} if a cut E_gamma > 2.1 GeV is applied on the photon energy, as done in the recent CLEO analysis. A precise measurement of the photon spectrum would help reducing the theoretical uncertainty and yield important information on the momentum distribution of b quarks inside B mesons.

Light Rays of New Physics: CP Violation in B -> Xs gamma Decays

The observation of a sizable CP asymmetry in the inclusive decays B -> Xs gamma would be a clean signal of New Physics. In the Standard Model, this asymmetry is below 1 % in magnitude. In extensions of the Standard Model with new CP-violating couplings, large asymmetries are possible without conflicting with the experimental value of the B -> Xs gamma branching ratio. In particular, large asymmetries arise naturally in models with enhanced chromo-magnetic dipole transitions. Some generic examples of such models are explored and their implications for the semileptonic branching ratio and charm yield in B decays discussed.

Looking for the Unexpected: Direct CP Violation in B -> X_s gamma Decays

The observation of a sizable direct CP asymmetry in the inclusive decays B -> X_s gamma would be a clean signal of New Physics. In the Standard Model, this asymmetry is below 1% in magnitude. In extensions of the Standard Model with new CP-violating couplings, large asymmetries are possible without conflicting with the experimental value of the B -> X_s gamma branching ratio. In particular, large asymmetries arise naturally in models with enhanced chromo-magnetic dipole transitions. Some generic examples of such models are explored and their implications for the semileptonic branching ratio and charm yield in B decays discussed.

Rescattering Effects, Isospin Relations and Electroweak Penguins in B -> pi K Decays

It is argued that, in the presence of soft final-state interactions, the diagrammatic amplitude approach adopted in many analyses of hadronic B decays into light mesons can be misleading when used to deduce the unimportance of certain decay topologies. With the example of B -> pi K decays, it is shown that the neglect of so-called annihilation and colour-suppressed amplitudes (including electroweak penguins), as well as penguin contributions involving an up-quark loop, is not justified. The implications for the Fleischer-Mannel bound on the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle, and for the CP asymmetry in the decays B^+- -> pi^+- K^0, are pointed out.

Theoretical Analysis of B -> D^{**} pi Decays

The decays B -> D^{**} pi, where D^{**} is a narrow p-wave charm resonance, are investigated in the context of a generalized factorization hypothesis, including the leading nonfactorizable corrections. The decay rates for these processes are related to the corresponding semileptonic rates at maximum recoil. It is pointed out that the current data on the branching ratio for the decay B^- -> D_2^{*0} pi^- may pose a problem for theory. We predict that future, more accurate measurements of this branching ratio will find a value B(B^- -> D_2^{*0} pi^-) = 4 * 10^{-4}, a factor 5 lower than the current central value.

A new look at hadronic B decays

We present a detailed study of non-leptonic two-body decays of B mesons based on a generalized factorization hypothesis. We discuss the structure of non-factorizable corrections and present arguments in favour of a simple phenomenological description of their effects. We discuss tests of the factorization hypothesis and show how it may be used to determine unknown decay constants. In particular, we obtain f_{D_s}=(234\pm 25) MeV and f_{D_s^*}=(271\pm 33) MeV.

Theory of Beauty Lifetimes

A critical review of the theoretical understanding of the lifetimes of beauty hadrons is given. A model-independent analysis using the heavy-quark expansion allows for a description of the lifetime ratios tau(B-)/tau(B0) and tau(Lambda_b)/tau(B0) in a small region of parameter space. It is demonstrated that the lifetime ratio tau(B-)/tau(B0) cannot be used to extract the decay constant of the B meson. Implications for the semileptonic branching ratio and charm yield in B decays are pointed out.

Non-Leptonic Weak Decays of B Mesons

We present a detailed study of non-leptonic two-body decays of B mesons based on a generalized factorization hypothesis. We discuss the structure of non-factorizable corrections and present arguments in favour of a simple phenomenological description of their effects. To evaluate the relevant transition form factors in the factorized decay amplitudes, we use information extracted from semileptonic decays and incorporate constraints imposed by heavy-quark symmetry. We discuss tests of the factorization hypothesis and show how unknown decay constants may be determined from non-leptonic decays. In particular, we find f_{Ds}=(234+-25) MeV and f_{Ds*}=(271+-33) MeV.

Theory of Inclusive B Decays

We present the theory of inclusive decays of hadrons containing a heavy quark and discuss its most important applications to the decays of B mesons. We also review the theoretical understanding of the hadronic parameters lambda_1 and lambda_2 (or mu_pi^2 and mu_G^2) entering the heavy-quark expansion.
