Metric geodesic covers of graphs

We study the problem of finding, for a given one-dimensional topological space $X$, a cover of $X$ of smallest size by geodesics with respect to some metric. The infimal size of such a set is called the metric geodesic cover number of $X$. We prove reductions enabling us to find, with computer assistance, optimal geodesic covers of a graph and use these to determine the cover number of several standard graphs, including $K_4$, $K_5$ and $K_{3,3}$. We also give a catalogue of topological spaces with cover number $3$, and use it to deduce that any such space must be planar.

Graphs that are not minimal for conformal dimension

We construct functions $f \colon [0,1] \to [0,1]$ whose graph as a subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ has Hausdorff dimension greater than any given value $\alpha \in (1,2)$ but conformal dimension $1$. These functions have the property that a positive proportion of level sets have positive codimension-$1$ measure. This result gives a negative answer to a question of Binder--Hakobyan--Li. We also give a function whose graph has Hausdorff dimension $2$ but conformal dimension $1$. The construction is based on the author's previous solution to the inverse absolute continuity problem for quasisymmetric mappings.

Factorization and piecewise affine approximation of bi-Lipschitz mappings on large sets

A well-known open problem asks whether every bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^d$ factors as a composition of mappings of small distortion. We show that every bi-Lipschitz embedding of the unit cube $[0,1]^d$ into $\mathbb{R}^d$ factors into finitely many global bi-Lipschitz mappings of small distortion, outside of an exceptional set of arbitrarily small Lebesgue measure, which cannot in general be removed. Our main tool is a corona-type decomposition theorem for bi-Lipschitz mappings. As corollaries, we obtain a related factorization result for bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms of the $d$-sphere, and we show that bi-Lipschitz embeddings of the unit $d$-cube in $\mathbb{R}^d$ can be approximated by global piecewise affine homeomorphisms outside of a small set.

Bi-Lipschitz embedding metric triangles in the plane

A metric polygon is a metric space comprised of a finite number of closed intervals joined cyclically. The second-named author and Ntalampekos recently found a method to bi-Lipschitz embed an arbitrary metric triangle in the Euclidean plane with uniformly bounded distortion, which we call here the tripodal embedding. In this paper, we prove the sharp distortion bound $4\sqrt{7/3}$ for the tripodal embedding. We also give a detailed analysis of four representative examples of metric triangles: the intrinsic circle, the three-petal rose, tripods and the twisted heart. In particular, our examples show the sharpness of the tripodal embedding distortion bound and give a lower bound for the optimal distortion bound in general. Finally, we show the triangle embedding theorem does not generalize to metric quadrilaterals by giving a family of examples of metric quadrilaterals that are not bi-Lipschitz embeddable in the plane with uniform distortion.

On CAT($\kappa$) surfaces

We study the properties of $\text{CAT}(\kappa)$ surfaces: length metric spaces homeomorphic to a surface having curvature bounded above in the sense of satisfying the $\text{CAT}(\kappa)$ condition locally. The main facts about $\text{CAT}(\kappa)$ surfaces seem to be largely a part of mathematical folklore, and this paper is intended to rectify the situation. We provide a complete proof that $\text{CAT}(\kappa)$ surfaces have bounded (integral) curvature. This fact allows one to apply the established theory of surfaces of bounded curvature to derive further properties of $\text{CAT}(\kappa)$ surfaces. We also show that $\text{CAT}(\kappa)$ surfaces can be approximated by smooth Riemannian surfaces of Gaussian curvature at most $\kappa$. We do this by giving explicit formulas for smoothing the vertices of model polyhedral surfaces.

Remarks on conformal modulus in metric spaces

We give an example of an Ahlfors $3$-regular, linearly locally connected metric space homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$ containing a nondegenerate continuum $E$ with zero capacity, in the sense that the conformal modulus of the set of nontrivial curves intersecting $E$ is zero. We discuss this example in relation to the quasiconformal uniformization problem for metric spaces.

Polyhedral approximation and uniformization for non-length surfaces

We prove that any metric surface (that is, metric space homeomorphic to a 2-manifold with boundary) with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of polyhedral surfaces with controlled geometry. We use this result, together with the classical uniformization theorem, to prove that any metric surface homeomorphic to the 2-sphere with finite Hausdorff 2-measure admits a weakly quasiconformal parametrization by the Riemann sphere, answering a question of Rajala-Wenger. These results have been previously established by the authors under the assumption that the metric surface carries a length metric. As a corollary, we obtain new proofs of the uniformization theorems of Bonk-Kleiner for quasispheres and of Rajala for reciprocal surfaces. Another corollary is a simplification of the definition of a reciprocal surface, which answers a question of Rajala concerning minimal hypotheses under which a metric surface is quasiconformally equivalent to a Euclidean domain.

Polyhedral approximation of metric surfaces and applications to uniformization

We prove that any length metric space homeomorphic to a 2-manifold with boundary, also called a length surface, is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of polyhedral surfaces with controlled geometry. As an application, using the classical uniformization theorem for Riemann surfaces and a limiting argument, we establish a general "one-sided" quasiconformal uniformization theorem for length surfaces with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Our approach yields a new proof of the Bonk-Kleiner theorem characterizing Ahlfors 2-regular quasispheres.

Triangulating metric surfaces

We prove that any length metric space homeomorphic to a surface may be decomposed into non-overlapping convex triangles of arbitrarily small diameter. This generalizes a previous result of Alexandrov--Zalgaller for surfaces of bounded curvature.

The branch set of minimal disks in metric spaces

We study the structure of the branch set of solutions to Plateau's problem in metric spaces satisfying a quadratic isoperimetric inequality. In our first result, we give examples of spaces with isoperimetric constant arbitrarily close to the Euclidean isoperimetric constant $(4\pi)^{-1}$ for which solutions have large branch set. This complements recent results of Lytchak--Wenger and Stadler stating, respectively, that any space with Euclidean isoperimetric constant is a CAT($0$) space and solutions to Plateau's problem in a CAT($0$) space have only isolated branch points. We also show that any planar cell-like set can appear as the branch set of a solution to Plateau's problem. These results answer two questions posed by Lytchak and Wenger. Moreover, we investigate several related questions about energy-minimizing parametrizations of metric disks: when such a map is quasisymmetric, when its branch set is empty, and when it is unique up to a conformal diffeomorphism.

Quasiconformal geometry and removable sets for conformal mappings

We study metric spaces defined via a conformal weight, or more generally a measurable Finsler structure, on a domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ that vanishes on a compact set $E \subset \Omega$ and satisfies mild assumptions. Our main question is to determine when such a space is quasiconformally equivalent to a planar domain. We give a characterization in terms of the notion of planar sets that are removable for conformal mappings. We also study the question of when a quasiconformal mapping can be factored as a 1-quasiconformal mapping precomposed with a bi-Lipschitz map.

Uniformization with infinitesimally metric measures

We consider extensions of quasiconformal maps and the uniformization theorem to the setting of metric spaces $X$ homeomorphic to $\mathbb R^2$. Given a measure $\mu$ on such a space, we introduce $\mu$-quasiconformal maps $f:X \to \mathbb R^2$, whose definition involves deforming lengths of curves by $\mu$. We show that if $\mu$ is an infinitesimally metric measure, i.e., it satisfies an infinitesimal version of the metric doubling measure condition of David and Semmes, then such a $\mu$-quasiconformal map exists. We apply this result to give a characterization of the metric spaces admitting an infinitesimally quasisymmetric parametrization.

On the inverse absolute continuity of quasiconformal mappings on hypersurfaces

We construct quasiconformal mappings $f\colon \mathbb{R}^{3} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{3}$ for which there is a Borel set $E \subset \mathbb{R}^2 \times \{0\}$ of positive Lebesgue $2$-measure whose image $f(E)$ has Hausdorff $2$-measure zero. This gives a solution to the open problem of inverse absolute continuity of quasiconformal mappings on hypersurfaces, attributed to Gehring. By implication, our result also answers questions of V\"ais\"al\"a and Astala--Bonk--Heinonen.

Singular quasisymmetric mappings in dimensions two and greater

For all $n \geq 2$, we construct a metric space $(X,d)$ and a quasisymmetric mapping $f\colon [0,1]^n \rightarrow X$ with the property that $f^{-1}$ is not absolutely continuous with respect to the Hausdorff $n$-measure on $X$. That is, there exists a Borel set $E \subset [0,1]^n$ with Lebesgue measure $|E|>0$ such that $f(E)$ has Hausdorff $n$-measure zero. The construction may be carried out so that $X$ has finite Hausdorff $n$-measure and $|E|$ is arbitrarily close to 1, or so that $|E| = 1$. This gives a negative answer to a question of Heinonen and Semmes.

Reciprocal lower bound on modulus of curve families in metric surfaces

We prove that any metric space $X$ homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^2$ with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure satisfies a reciprocal lower bound on modulus of curve families associated to a quadrilateral. More precisely, let $Q \subset X$ be a topological quadrilateral with boundary edges (in cyclic order) denoted by $\zeta_1, \zeta_2, \zeta_3, \zeta_4$ and let $\Gamma(\zeta_i, \zeta_j; Q)$ denote the family of curves in $Q$ connecting $\zeta_i$ and $\zeta_j$; then $\text{mod} \Gamma(\zeta_1, \zeta_3; Q) \text{mod} \Gamma(\zeta_2, \zeta_4; Q) \geq 1/\kappa$ for $\kappa = 2000^2\cdot (4/\pi)^2$. This answers a question concerning minimal hypotheses under which a metric space admits a quasiconformal parametrization by a domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

Quasiconformal parametrization of metric surfaces with small dilatation

We verify a conjecture of Rajala: if $(X,d)$ is a metric surface of locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure admitting some (geometrically) quasiconformal parametrization by a simply connected domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^2$, then there exists a quasiconformal mapping $f: X \rightarrow \Omega$ satisfying the modulus inequality $2\pi^{-1}\text{Mod }\Gamma \leq \text{Mod }f\Gamma \leq 4\pi^{-1}\text{Mod }\Gamma$ for all curve families $\Gamma$ in $X$. This inequality is the best possible. Our proof is based on an inequality for the area of a planar convex body under a linear transformation which attains its Banach-Mazur distance to the Euclidean unit ball.

Quasiconformal mappings on the Grushin plane

We prove that a self-homeomorphism of the Grushin plane is quasisymmetric if and only if it is metrically quasiconformal and if and only if it is geometrically quasiconformal. As the main step in our argument, we show that a quasisymmetric parametrization of the Grushin plane by the Euclidean plane must also be geometrically quasiconformal. We also discuss some aspects of the Euclidean theory of quasiconformal maps, such as absolute continuity on almost every compact curve, not satisfied in the Grushin case.

Conformal Grushin spaces

We introduce a class of metrics on $\mathbb{R}^n$ generalizing the classical Grushin plane. These are length metrics defined by the line element $ds = d_E(\cdot,Y)^{-\beta}ds_E$ for a closed nonempty subset $Y \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and $\beta \in [0,1)$. We prove that, assuming a H\"older condition on the metric, these spaces are quasisymmetrically equivalent to $\mathbb{R}^n$ and can be embedded in some larger Euclidean space under a bi-Lipschitz map. Our main tool is an embedding characterization due to Seo, which we strengthen by removing the hypothesis of uniform perfectness. In the two-dimensional case, we give another proof of bi-Lipschitz embeddability based on growth bounds on sectional curvature.
