A sharp rigidity/flexibility threshold for the isotropic Landau equation

We establish a sharp rigidity/flexibility threshold for stationary solutions of the Krieger--Strain equation, an isotropic model of the Landau--Coulomb equation. For every $1< p < \frac65$, we use Nash iteration to construct nontrivial, nonnegative solutions in $L^1(\mathbb{R}^3) \cap L^p(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with arbitrarily strong exponential localization. Conversely, every stationary weak solution in $L^{\frac65}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ is trivial, identifying $L^{\frac65}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ as a new sharp integrability threshold. To our knowledge, this is the first use of Nash iteration for a nonlinear equation from collisional kinetic theory. The construction is based on a high--high--low cancellation within the Krieger--Strain operator and suggests that such mechanisms may occur more broadly in kinetic theory. The construction must accommodate kinetic features unusual for the method including a strongly nonlocal collision operator; an equation fundamentally posed on the whole space---not the periodic box; and a positive scalar unknown. At this low level of regularity, the usual formulations of the collision operator are not a priori well-defined, so a central part of the problem is specifying in what sense the constructed objects solve the equation. We isolate the notion of mollifier confluence, a simple and canonical way to interpret a nonlinearity below naive thresholds related to multiplying distributions. We complement this definition with a systematic treatment of weak solution notions and several explicit formal computations and clarifying examples that may be of independent interest.

Non-conservation of a generalized helicity in the Euler equations

For a $C^1_{t,x}$ solution $u$ to the incompressible 3D Euler equations, the helicity $H(u(t))=\int_{\mathbb{T}^3} u \cdot \textrm{curl}\, u$ is constant in time. For general low-regularity weak solutions, it is not always clear how to define the helicity, or whether it must be constant in time in the case that there is a clear definition. In this paper, we define a generalized helicity which extends the classical definitions and construct weak solutions of Euler of almost Onsager-critical regularity in $L^3$ with prescribed generalized helicity and kinetic energy.

Intermittent singular solutions of the stationary 2D Navier-Stokes equations in sharp Sobolev spaces

In this paper we construct non-trivial solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes equations on the two dimensional torus which lie in $\bigcap_{\epsilon \in (0,1)} L^{2-\epsilon}(\mathbb{T}^2) \cap \dot H^{-\epsilon}(\mathbb{T}^2)$. Due to the fact that our solutions are not square integrable, we must redefine the notion of solution. Our result gives a sharp extension of recent work of Lemari\'e-Rieusset, who proved a similar result in the space $\dot{H}^{-1} \cap {BMO}^{-1}$. The main new ingredient is the incorporation of intermittency into the construction of the solutions.

Kinetic shock profiles for the Landau equation

The physical quantities in a gas should vary continuously across a shock. However, the physics inherent in the compressible Euler equations is insufficient to describe the width or structure of the shock. We demonstrate the existence of weak shock profiles to the kinetic Landau equation, that is, traveling wave solutions with Maxwellian asymptotic states whose hydrodynamic quantities satisfy the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions. These solutions serve to capture the structure of weak shocks at the kinetic level. Previous works considered only the Boltzmann equation with hard sphere and angular cut-off potentials.

Scaling laws and exact results in turbulence

In this note, we address the validity of certain exact results from turbulence theory in the deterministic setting. The main tools, inspired by the work of Duchon-Robert (Inertial energy dissipation for weak solutions of incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations, Nonlinearity, 13(249), 2000) and Eyink (Local 4/5-law and energy dissipation anomaly in turbulence, Nonlinearity, 16(137), 2003), are a number of energy balance identities for weak solutions of the incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. As a consequence, we show that certain weak solutions of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations satisfy deterministic versions of Kolmogorov's 4/5, 4/3, 4/15 laws. We apply these computations to improve a recent result of Hofmanova et al. (Kolmogorov 4/5 law for the forced 3D Navier-Stokes equations, arXiv:2304.14470), which shows that a construction of solutions of forced Navier-Stokes due to Bru\`e et al. (Onsager critical solutions of the forced Navier-Stokes equations, arXiv:2212.08413) and exhibiting a form of anomalous dissipation satisfies asymptotic versions of Kolmogorov's laws. In addition, we show that the globally dissipative 3D Euler flows recently constructed by Giri, Kwon, and the author (The $L^3$-based strong Onsager theorem, arXiv:2305.18509) satisfy the local versions of Kolmogorov's laws.

A wavelet-inspired $L^3$-based convex integration framework for the Euler equations

In this work, we develop a wavelet-inspired, $L^3$-based convex integration framework for constructing weak solutions to the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. The main innovations include a new multi-scale building block, which we call an intermittent Mikado bundle; a wavelet-inspired inductive set-up which includes assumptions on spatial and temporal support, in addition to $L^p$ and pointwise estimates for Eulerian and Lagrangian derivatives; and sharp decoupling lemmas, inverse divergence estimates, and space-frequency localization technology which is well-adapted to functions satisfying $L^p$ estimates for $p$ other than $1$, $2$, or $\infty$. We develop these tools in the context of the Euler-Reynolds system, enabling us to give both a new proof of the intermittent Onsager theorem (An Intermittent Onsager Theorem, Inventiones Mathematicae, (2023), 233) in this paper, and a proof of the $L^3$-based strong Onsager conjecture in a companion paper (arXiv:2305.18509).

The $L^3$-based strong Onsager theorem

In this work, we prove the $L^3$-based strong Onsager conjecture for the three-dimensional Euler equations. Our main theorem states that there exist weak solutions which dissipate the total kinetic energy, satisfy the local energy inequality, and belong to $C^0_t (W^{\frac 13-, 3} \cap L^{\infty-})$. More precisely, for every $\beta<\frac 13$, we can construct such solutions in the space $C^0_t ( B^{\beta}_{3,\infty} \cap L^{\frac{1}{1-3\beta}} )$.

An Intermittent Onsager Theorem

For any regularity exponent $\beta<\frac 12$, we construct non-conservative weak solutions to the 3D incompressible Euler equations in the class $C^0_t (H^{\beta} \cap L^{\frac{1}{(1-2\beta)}})$. By interpolation, such solutions belong to $C^0_tB^{s}_{3,\infty}$ for $s$ approaching $\frac 13$ as $\beta$ approaches $\frac 12$. Hence this result provides a new proof of the flexible side of the $L^3$-based Onsager conjecture. Of equal importance is that the intermittent nature of our solutions matches that of turbulent flows, which are observed to possess an $L^2$-based regularity index exceeding $\frac 13$. Thus our result does not imply, and is not implied by, the work of Isett [A proof of Onsager's conjecture, Annals of Mathematics, 188(3):871, 2018], who gave a proof of the H\"older-based Onsager conjecture. Our proof builds on the authors' previous joint work with Buckmaster et al. (Intermittent convex integration for the 3D Euler equations: (AMS-217), Princeton University Press, 2023), in which an intermittent convex integration scheme is developed for the 3D incompressible Euler equations. We employ a scheme with higher-order Reynolds stresses, which are corrected via a combinatorial placement of intermittent pipe flows of optimal relative intermittency.

Non-conservative solutions of the Euler-$\alpha$ equations

The Euler-$\alpha$ equations model the averaged motion of an ideal incompressible fluid when filtering over spatial scales smaller than $\alpha$. We show that there exists $\beta>1$ such that weak solutions to the two and three dimensional Euler-$\alpha$ equations in the class $C^0_t H^\beta_x$ are not unique and may not conserve the Hamiltonian of the system, thus demonstrating flexibility in this regularity class. The construction utilizes a Nash-style intermittent convex integration scheme. We also formulate an appropriate version of the Onsager conjecture for Euler-$\alpha$, postulating that the threshold between rigidity and flexibility is the regularity class $L^3_t B^{\frac{1}{3}}_{3,\infty,x}$.

Exact Boundary Controllability for the Ideal Magneto-hydrodynamic Equations

We address the problem of controllability of the MHD system in a rectangular domain with a control prescribed on the side boundary. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition on the data to be null controllable, i.e., can be driven to the zero state. We also show that the validity of this condition allows the states to be stirred to each other. If the condition is not satisfied, one can move from one state to another with the help of a simple shear external magnetic force.

Enhanced dissipation and H\"ormander's hypoellipticity

We examine the phenomenon of enhanced dissipation from the perspective of H\"ormander's classical theory of second order hypoelliptic operators [31]. Consider a passive scalar in a shear flow, whose evolution is described by the advection-diffusion equation \[ \partial_t f + b(y) \partial_x f - \nu \Delta f = 0 \text{ on } \mathbb{T} \times (0,1) \times \mathbb{R}_+ \] with periodic, Dirichlet, or Neumann conditions in $y$. We demonstrate that decay is enhanced on the timescale $T \sim \nu^{-(N+1)/(N+3)}$, where $N-1$ is the maximal order of vanishing of the derivative $b'(y)$ of the shear profile and $N=0$ for monotone shear flows. In the periodic setting, we recover the known timescale of Bedrossian and Coti Zelati [8]. Our results are new in the presence of boundaries.

Non-conservative $H^{\frac 12-}$ weak solutions of the incompressible 3D Euler equations

For any positive regularity parameter $\beta < \frac 12$, we construct non-conservative weak solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations which lie in $H^{\beta}$ uniformly in time. In particular, we construct solutions which have an $L^2$-based regularity index \emph{strictly larger} than $\frac 13$, thus deviating from the $H^{\frac{1}{3}}$-regularity corresponding to the Kolmogorov-Obhukov $\frac 53$ power spectrum in the inertial range.

Non-uniqueness of Weak Solutions to the 3D Quasi-Geostrophic Equations

We show that weak solutions to the 3D quasi-geostrophic system in the class $C^\zeta_{t,x}$ for $\zeta<\frac{1}{5}$ are not unique and may achieve any smooth, non-negative energy profile. Our proof follows a convex integration scheme which utilizes the stratified nature of the quasi-geostrophic velocity field, providing a link with the 2D Euler equations. In fact we observe that under particular circumstances our construction coincides with the convex integration scheme for the 2D Euler equations introduced by Choffrut, De Lellis, and Szek\'{e}lyhidi \cite{cdlsj12} and recovers a result which can already be inferred from the arguments of Buckmaster, De Lellis, Isett, and Sz\'{e}kelyhidi \cite{bdlisj15} or Buckmaster, Shkoller, and Vicol \cite{bsv16}.

The Inviscid 3D Quasi-Geostrophic System on Bounded Domains

We present a formal derivation of the inviscid 3D quasi-geostrophic system (QG) from primitive equations on a bounded, cylindrical domain. A key point in the derivation is the treatment of the lateral boundary and the resulting boundary conditions it imposes on solutions. To our knowledge, these boundary conditions are new and differentiate our model from closely related models which have been the object of recent study. These boundary conditions are natural for a variational problem in a particular Hilbert space. We construct solutions and prove an elliptic regularity theorem corresponding to the variational problem, allowing us to show the existence of global weak solutions to (QG).
