M-ideals in real operator algebras

In a recent paper we showed that a subspace of a real JBW*-triple is an M-summand if and only if it is a weak*-closed triple ideal. As a consequence, M-ideals of real JB*-triples, including real C*-algebras, real JB*-algebras and real TROs, correspond to norm-closed triple ideals. In the present paper we extend this result to (possibly non-selfadjoint) real operator algebras and Jordan operator algebras, where the argument is necessarily different. We also give simple characterizations of one-sided M-ideals in real operator algebras, and give some applications to that theory.

$M$-ideals, yet again: the case of real JB$^*$-triples

We prove that a subspace of a real JBW$^*$-triple is an $M$-summand if and only if it is a weak$^*$-closed triple ideal. As a consequence, $M$-ideals of real JB$^*$-triples correspond to norm-closed triple ideals. As in the setting of complex JB$^*$-triples, a geometric property is characterized in purely algebraic terms. This is a newfangled treatment of the classical notion of $M$-ideal in the real setting by a fully new approach due to the unfeasibility of the known arguments in the setting of complex C$^*$-algebras and JB$^*$-triples. The results in this note also provide a full characterization of all $M$-ideals in real C$^*$-algebras, real JB$^*$-algebras and real TROs.

Contractive projections and real positive maps on operator algebras

We study contractive projections, isometries, and real positive maps on algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. For example we find generalizations and variants of certain classical results on contractive projections on C*-algebras and JB-algebras due to Choi, Effros, St{\o}rmer, Friedman and Russo, and others. In fact most of our arguments generalize to contractive `real positive' projections on Jordan operator algebras, that is on a norm-closed space A of operators on a Hilbert space which are closedunder the Jordan product. We also prove many new general results on real positive maps which are foundational to the study of such maps, and of interest in their own right. We also prove a new Banach-Stone type theorem for isometries between operator algebras or Jordan operator algebras. An application of this is given to the characterization of symmetric real positive projections.

Noncommutative topology and Jordan operator algebras

Jordan operator algebras are norm-closed spaces of operators on a Hilbert space with $a^2 \in A$ for all $a \in A$. We study noncommutative topology, noncommutative peak sets and peak interpolation, and hereditary subalgebras of Jordan operator algebras. We show that Jordan operator algebras present perhaps the most general setting for a `full' noncommutative topology in the C*-algebraic sense of Akemann, L. G. Brown, Pedersen, etc, and as modified for not necessarily selfadjoint algebras by the authors with Read, Hay and other coauthors. Our breakthrough relies in part on establishing several strong variants of C*-algebraic results of Brown relating to hereditary subalgebras, proximinality, deeper facts about $L+L^*$ for a left ideal $L$ in a C*-algebra, noncommutative Urysohn lemmas, etc. We also prove several other approximation results in $C^*$-algebras and various subspaces of $C^*$-algebras, related to open and closed projections, and technical $C^*$-algebraic results of Brown.

Completely contractive projections on operator algebras

The main goal of this paper is to find operator algebra variants of certain deep results of Stormer, Friedman and Russo, Choi and Effros, Effros and Stormer, Robertson and Youngson, Youngson, and others, concerning projections on C*-algebras and their ranges. (See papers of these authors referenced in the bibliography.) In particular we investigate the `bicontractive projection problem' and related questions in the category of operator algebras. To do this, we will add the ingredient of `real positivity' from recent papers of the first author with Read.

A holomorphic characterization of operator algebras

A necessary and sufficient condition for an operator space to support a multiplication making it completely isometric and isomorphic to a unital operator algebra is proved. The condition involves only the holomorphic structure of the Banach spaces underlying the operator space.

Metric characterizations II

The present paper is a sequel to our paper "Metric characterization of isometries and of unital operator spaces and systems". We characterize certain common objects in the theory of operator spaces (unitaries, unital operator spaces, operator systems, operator algebras, and so on), in terms which are purely linear-metric, by which we mean that they only use the vector space structure of the space and its matrix norms. In the last part we give some characterizations of operator algebras (which are not linear-metric in our strict sense described in the paper).

Open projections in operator algebras II: Compact projections

We generalize some aspects of the theory of compact projections relative to a C*-algebra, to the setting of more general algebras. Our main result is that compact projections are the decreasing limits of `peak projections', and in the separable case compact projections are just the peak projections. We also establish new forms of the noncommutative Urysohn lemma relative to an operator algebra, and we show that a projection is compact iff the associated face in the state space of the algebra is weak* closed.

Open projections in operator algebras I: Comparison theory

We begin a program of generalizing basic elements of the theory of comparison, equivalence, and subequivalence, of elements in C*-algebras, to the setting of more general algebras. In particular, we follow the recent lead of Lin, Ortega, Rordam, and Thiel of studying these equivalences, etc., in terms of open projections or module isomorphisms. We also define and characterize a new class of inner ideals in operator algebras, and develop a matching theory of open partial isometries in operator ideals which simultaneously generalize the open projections in operator algebras (in the sense of the authors and Hay), and the open partial isometries (tripotents) introduced by the authors.

Contractively complemented subspaces of pre-symmetric spaces

In 1965, Ron Douglas proved that if $X$ is a closed subspace of an $L^1$-space and $X$ is isometric to another $L^1$-space, then $X$ is the range of a contractive projection on the containing $L^1$-space. In 1977 Arazy-Friedman showed that if a subspace $X$ of $C_1$ is isometric to another $C_1$-space (possibly finite dimensional), then there is a contractive projection of $C_1$ onto $X$. In 1993 Kirchberg proved that if a subspace $X$ of the predual of a von Neumann algebra $M$ is isometric to the predual of another von Neumann algebra, then there is a contractive projection of the predual of $M$ onto $X$. We widen significantly the scope of these results by showing that if a subspace $X$ of the predual of a $JBW^*$-triple $A$ is isometric to the predual of another $JBW^*$-triple $B$, then there is a contractive projection on the predual of $A$ with range $X$, as long as $B$ does not have a direct summand which is isometric to a space of the form $L^\infty(\Omega,H)$, where $H$ is a Hilbert space of dimension at least two. The result is false without this restriction on $B$.

Open partial isometries and positivity in operator spaces

We study positivity in C*-modules and operator spaces using open tripotents, and an ordered version of the `noncommutative Shilov boundary'. Because of their independent interest, we also systematically study open tripotents and their properties.

Ordered involutive operator spaces

This is a companion to recent papers of the authors; here we construct the `noncommutative Shilov boundary' of a (possibly nonunital) selfadjoint ordered space of Hilbert space operators. The morphisms in the universal property of the boundary preserve order. As an application, we consider `maximal' and `minimal' unitizations of such ordered operator spaces.

Hereditary subalgebras of operator algebras

In recent work of the second author, a technical result was proved establishing a bijective correspondence between certain open projections in a C*-algebra containing an operator algebra A, and certain one-sided ideals of A. Here we give several remarkable consequences of this result. These include a generalization of the theory of hereditary subalgebras of a C*-algebra, and the solution of a ten year old problem on the Morita equivalence of operator algebras. In particular, the latter gives a very clean generalization of the notion of Hilbert C*-modules to nonselfadjoint algebras. We show that an `ideal' of a general operator space X is the intersection of X with an `ideal' in any containing C*-algebra or C*-module. Finally, we discuss the noncommutative variant of the classical theory of `peak sets'.

Classification of contractively complemented Hilbertian operator spaces

We construct some separable infinite dimensional homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces which generalize the row and column spaces R and C. We show that separable infinite-dimensional Hilbertian JC*-triples are completely isometric to an element of the set of (infinite) intersections of these spaces. This set includes the operator spaces R, C, their intersection, and the space spanned by creation operators on the full anti-symmetric Fock space. In fact, we show that these new spaces are completely isometric to the space of creation (resp. annihilation) operators on the anti-symmetric tensors of the Hilbert space. Together with the finite-dimensional case studied in our previous paper, this gives a full operator space classification of all rank-one JC*-triples in terms of creation and annihilation operator spaces. We use the above to show that all contractive projections on a C*-algebra A with infinite dimensional Hilbertian range are ``expansions'' (which we define precisely) of normal contractive projections from the second dual of A onto a Hilbertian space which is completely isometric to one of the four spaces mentioned above. This generalizes the well known result, first proved for B(H) by Robertson, that all Hilbertian operator spaces that are completely contractively complemented in a C*-algebra are completely isometric to R or C. We also compute various completely bounded Banach-Mazur distances between these spaces.

Representation of contractively complemented Hilbertian operator spaces and the Fock space

The operator spaces $H_n^k$ $1\le k\le n$, generalizing the row and column Hilbert spaces, and arising in the authors' previous study of contractively complemented subspaces of $C^*$-algebras, are shown to be homogeneous and completely isometric to a space of creation operators on a subspace of the anti-symmetric Fock space. The completely bounded Banach-Mazur distance from $H_n^k$ to row or column space is explicitly calculated.

State spaces of JB*-triples

An atomic decomposition is proved for Banach spaces which satisfy some affine geometric axioms compatible with notions from the quantum mechanical measuring process. This is then applied to yield, under appropriate assumptions, geometric characterizations, up to isometry, of the unit ball of the dual space of a JB*-triple, and up to complete isometry, of one-sided ideals in C*-algebras.

Contractive projections and operator spaces

Parallel to the study of finite dimensional Banach spaces, there is a growing interest in the corresponding local theory of operator spaces. We define a family of Hilbertian operator spaces H_n^k,0< k < n+1, generalizing the row and column Hilbert spaces R_n,C_n and show that an atomic subspace X of B(H) which is the range of a contractive projection on B(H) is isometrically completely contractive to a direct sum of the H_n^k and Cartan factors of types 1 to 4. In particular, for finite dimensional X, this answers a question posed by Oikhberg and Rosenthal. Explicit in the proof is a classification up to complete isometry of atomic w*-closed JW*-triples without an infinite dimensional rank 1 w^*-closed ideal
