Multi-layer anti-reflection coats using ePTFE membrane for mm-wavelength plastic optics

Future millimeter wavelength experiments aim to both increase aperture diameters and broaden bandwidths to increase the sensitivity of the receivers. These changes produce a challenging anti-reflection (AR) design problem for refracting and transmissive optics. The higher frequency plastic optics require consistently thin polymer coats across a wide area, while wider bandwidths require multilayer designs. We present multilayer AR coats for plastic optics of the high frequency BICEP Array receiver (200-300 GHz) utilizing an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane, layered and compressively heat-bonded to itself. This process allows for a range of densities (from 0.3g/cc to 1g/cc) and thicknesses (>0.05mm) over a wide radius (33cm), opening the parameter space of potential AR coats in interesting directions. The layered ePTFE membrane has been combined with other polymer layers to produce band average reflections between 0.2% and 0.6% on high density polyethylene and a thin high modulus polyethylene window, respectively.

GLINKX: A Scalable Unified Framework For Homophilous and Heterophilous Graphs

In graph learning, there have been two predominant inductive biases regarding graph-inspired architectures: On the one hand, higher-order interactions and message passing work well on homophilous graphs and are leveraged by GCNs and GATs. Such architectures, however, cannot easily scale to large real-world graphs. On the other hand, shallow (or node-level) models using ego features and adjacency embeddings work well in heterophilous graphs. In this work, we propose a novel scalable shallow method -- GLINKX -- that can work both on homophilous and heterophilous graphs. GLINKX leverages (i) novel monophilous label propagations, (ii) ego/node features, (iii) knowledge graph embeddings as positional embeddings, (iv) node-level training, and (v) low-dimensional message passing. Formally, we prove novel error bounds and justify the components of GLINKX. Experimentally, we show its effectiveness on several homophilous and heterophilous datasets.

Party On: The Labor Market Returns to Social Networks in Adolescence

We investigate the returns to adolescent friendships on earnings in adulthood using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Because both education and friendships are jointly determined in adolescence, OLS estimates of their returns are likely biased. We implement a novel procedure to obtain bounds on the causal returns to friendships: we assume that the returns to schooling range from 5 to 15% (based on prior literature), and instrument for friendships using similarity in age among peers. Having one more friend in adolescence increases earnings between 7 and 14%, substantially more than OLS estimates would suggest.

The Structure of the Milky Way's Hot Gas Halo

The Milky Way's million degree gaseous halo contains a considerable amount of mass that, depending on its structural properties, can be a significant mass component. In order to analyze the structure of the Galactic halo, we use XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer archival data and measure OVII K alpha absorption-line strengths toward 26 active galactic nuclei, LMC X-3, and two Galactic sources (4U 1820-30 and X1735-444). We assume a beta-model as the underlying gas density profile and find best-fit parameters of n_o = 0.46^{+0.74}_{-0.35} cm^-3, r_c = 0.35^{+0.29}_{-0.27} kpc, and beta = 0.71^{+0.13}_{-0.14}. These parameters result in halo masses ranging between M(18 kpc) = 7.5^{+22.0}_{-4.6} x 10^8 M_sun and M(200 kpc) = 3.8^{+6.0}_{-0.5} x 10^{10} M_sun assuming a gas metallicity of Z = 0.3 Z_sun, which are consistent with current theoretical and observational work. The maximum baryon fraction from our halo model of f_b = 0.07^{+0.03}_{-0.01} is significantly smaller than the universal value of f_b = 0.171, implying the mass contained in the Galactic halo accounts for 10% - 50% of the missing baryons in the Milky Way. We also discuss our model in the context of several Milky Way observables, including ram pressure stripping in dwarf spheroidal galaxies, the observed X-ray emission measure in the 0.5 - 2 keV band, the Milky Way's star formation rate, spatial and thermal properties of cooler gas (~10^5 K) and the observed Fermi bubbles toward the Galactic center. Although the metallicity of the halo gas is a large uncertainty in our analysis, we place a lower limit on the halo gas between the Sun and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We find that Z >~ 0.2 Z_sun based on the pulsar dispersion measure toward the LMC.

Edge colored hypergraphic arrangements

A subspace arrangement defined by intersections of hyperplanes of the braid arrangement can be encoded by an edge colored hypergraph. It turns out that the characteristic polynomial of this type of subspace arrangement is given by a generalized chromatic polynomial of the associated edge colored hypergraph. The main result of this paper supplies a sufficient condition for the existence of non-trivial Massey products of the subspace arrangements complex complement. This is accomplished by studying a spectral sequence associated to the Lie coalgebras of Sinha and Walter.

On the Betti numbers of some Gorenstein ideals

Assume $R$ is a polynomial ring over a field and $I$ is a homogeneous Gorenstein ideal of codimension $g\ge3$ and initial degree $p\ge2$. We prove that the number of minimal generators $ν(I_p)$ of $I$ that are in degree $p$ is bounded above by $ν_0={p+g-1\choose g-1}-{p+g-3\choose g-1}$, which is the number of minimal generators of the defining ideal of the extremal Gorenstein algebra of codimension $g$ and initial degree $p$. Further, $I$ is itself extremal if $ν(I_p)=ν_0$.
