Buffon's needle estimates for rational product Cantor sets

Let $S_\infty=A_\infty\times B_\infty$ be a self-similar product Cantor set in the complex plane, defined via $S_\infty=\bigcup_{j=1}^L T_j(S_\infty)$, where $T_j:\C\to\C$ have the form $T_j(z)=\frac1{L}z+z_j$ and $\{z_1,...,z_L\}=A+iB$ for some $A,B\subset\rr$ with $|A|,|B|>1$ and $|A||B|=L$. Let $S_N$ be the $L^{-N}$-neighbourhood of $S_\infty$, or equivalently (up to constants), its $N$-th Cantor iteration. We are interested in the asymptotic behaviour as $N\to\infty$ of the {\it Favard length} of $S_N$, defined as the average (with respect to direction) length of its 1-dimensional projections. If the sets $A$ and $B$ are rational and have cardinalities at most 6, then the Favard length of $S_N$ is bounded from above by $CN^{-p/\log\log N}$ for some $p>0$. The same result holds with no restrictions on the size of $A$ and $B$ under certain implicit conditions concerning the generating functions of these sets. This generalizes the earlier results of Nazarov-Perez-Volberg, Łaba-Zhai, and Bond-Volberg.

The Power Law For Buffon's Needle Landing Near the Sierpinski Gasket

In this paper we get a power estimate from above of the probability that Buffon's needle will land within distance 3^{-n} of Sierpinski's gasket of Hausdorff dimension 1. In comparison with the case of 1/4 corner Cantor set considered in Nazarov, Peres, and the second author: we still need the technique of arXiv:0801.2942 for splitting the directions to good and bad ones, but the case of Sierpinski gasket is considerably more generic and lacks symmetry, resulting in a need for much more careful estimates of zeros of the Fourier transform of Cantor measure.

Buffon needles landing near Sierpinski gasket

In this paper we modify the method of Nazarov, Peres, and Volberg "The power law for the Buffon needle probability of the four-corner Cantor set", arXiv:0801.2942, to get an estimate from above of the Buffon needle probability of the $n$--th partially constructed Sierpinski gasket of Hausdorff dimension 1.

Estimates from below of the Buffon noodle probability for undercooked noodles

Let $\Cant_n$ be the $n$-th generation in the construction of the middle-half Cantor set. The Cartesian square $\K_n$ of $\Cant_n$ consists of $4^n$ squares of side-length $4^{-n}$. The chance that a long needle thrown at random in the unit square will meet $\K_n$ is essentially the average length of the projections of $\K_n$, also known as the Favard length of $\K_n$. A result due to Bateman and Volberg \cite{BV} shows that a lower estimate for this Favard length is $c \frac{\log n}{n}$. We may bend the needle at each stage, giving us what we will call a noodle, and ask whether the uniform lower estimate $c \frac{\log n}{n}$ still holds for these so-called Buffon noodle probabilities. If so, we call the sequence of noodles undercooked. We will define a few classes of noodles and prove that they are undercooked. In particular, we are interested in the case when the noodles are circular arcs of radius $r_n$. We will show that if $r_n \geq 4^{\frac{n}{5}}$, then the circular arcs are undercooked noodles.
