Virtually generating graphs of pro-$p$ groups

We study the virtually generating graph of pro-$p$ groups. We show that various classes of pro-$p$ groups have connected virtually generating graph and we bound its diameter in these cases; e.g.\ compact subgroups of analytic groups over local fields and the Nottingham group.

Engel probability in wreath products of $p$-groups

We give upper and lower bounds for the number of solutions of the equation $e_n(x,y) = g$ in the group $W_k=(C_p\wr C_{p^k})^2$, where $e_n(x,y)$ is the $n$-th Engel word and $g\in W_k$. We obtain several corollaries from this. First, we prove a stronger version of the Amit-Ashurst conjecture for Engel words in $W_k$. We also prove that Engel words are not probabilistic identities in profinite groups with arbitrarily large wreath product quotients $W_k$. To conclude, we construct closed subsets of $(C_p\wr\Z_p)^2$ with positive Haar measure, empty-interior, and which are the preimage of an Engel word map.

On subgroup growth of iterated wreath products in product action

We show that there are hereditarily just infinite groups of any subgroup growth type between $n$ and $n^{\log n}$. This is obtained calculating the subgroup growth type of a family of hereditarily just infinite profinite groups obtained via iterated wreath products of finite permutation groups with respect to product actions.

On probabilistic identities and coset identities in pro-$p$ groups

It is shown that a probabilistic identity on a $\sigma$-compact $K$-analytic group $G$, $K$ a non-archimedean local field, is a coset identity. As an application, one concludes that compact $K$-analytic groups and various pro-$p$ groups obtained from free constructions satisfy a probabilistic Tits alternative. By means of Lie-theoretic methods, we also study torsion probabilistic identities in virtually free pro-$p$ and compact $p$-adic analytic groups.

On commensurators of free groups and free pro-p groups

We study the commensurators of free groups and free pro-$p$ groups, as well as certain subgroups of these. We prove that the commensurator $Comm(F)$ of a non-abelian free group of finite rank $F$ is not virtually simple, answering a question of Lubotzky. On the other hand, we exhibit a family of easy-to-define finitely generated subgroups of $Comm(F)$ and show that some groups in this family are simple. For a prime $p$, we also consider the p-commensurator $Comm_p(F)$, which is the commensurator of $F$ viewed as a group with pro-$p$ topology. By contrast with $Comm(F)$, we prove that $Comm_p(F)$ has a simple subgroup of index at most 2. Further, while the isomorphism class of $Comm(F)$ does not depend on the rank of $F$, we prove that the isomorphism class of $Comm_p(F)$ depends on the rank of $F$ and determine the exact dependency. If $\mathbf F$ is the pro-$p$ completion of $F$ (which is a free pro-$p$ group), $Comm(\mathbf F)$ is a totally disconnected locally compact (tdlc) group containing $\mathbf F$ as an open subgroup. We use $Comm_p(F)$ to construct an abstractly simple subgroup of $Comm(\mathbf F)$ containing $\mathbf F$ as well as a family of non-discrete tdlc groups which are compactly generated and simple.

Commuting and product-zero probability in finite rings

Let cp(R) be the probability that two random elements of a finite ring R commute and zp(R) the probability that the product of two random elements in R is zero. We show that if cp(R)=e, then there exists a Lie-ideal D in the Lie-ring (R,[.,.]) with e-bounded index and with [D,D] of e-bounded order. If zp(R)=e, then there exists an ideal D in R with e-bounded index and D^2 of e-bounded order. These results are analogous to the well-known theorem of P. Neumann on the commuting probability in finite groups.

Weil zeta functions of group representations over finite fields

In this article we define and study a zeta function $\zeta_G$ - similar to the Hasse-Weil zeta function - which enumerates absolutely irreducible representations over finite fields of a (profinite) group $G$. The zeta function converges on a complex half-plane for all UBERG groups and admits an Euler product decomposition. Our motivation for this investigation is the observation that the reciprocal value $\zeta_G(k)^{-1}$ at a positive integer $k$ coincides with the probability that $k$ random elements generate the completed group ring of $G$. The explicit formulas obtained so far suggest that $\zeta_G$ is rather well-behaved. A central object of this article is the abscissa of convergence $a(G)$ of $\zeta_G$. We calculate the abscissae for free abelian, free abelian pro-$p$, free pro-$p$, free pronilpotent and free prosoluble groups. More generally, we obtain bounds (and sometimes explicit values) for the abscissae of free pro-$\mathfrak{C}$ groups, where $\mathfrak{C}$ is a class of finite groups with prescribed composition factors. We prove that every real number $a \geq 1$ is the abscissa $a(G)$ of some profinite group $G$. In addition, we show that the Euler factors of $\zeta_G$ are rational functions in $p^{-s}$ if $G$ is virtually abelian. For finite groups $G$ we calculate $\zeta_G$ using the rational representation theory of $G$.

Counting irreducible modules for profinite groups

This article is concerned with the representation growth of profinite groups over finite fields. We investigate the structure of groups with uniformly bounded exponential representation growth (UBERG). Using crown-based powers we obtain some necessary and some sufficient conditions for groups to have UBERG. As an application we prove that the class of UBERG groups is closed under split extensions but fails to be closed under extensions in general. On the other hand, we show that the closely related probabilistic finiteness property $PFP_1$ is closed under extensions. In addition, we prove that profinite groups of type $FP_1$ with UBERG are always finitely generated and we characterise UBERG in the class of pro-nilpotent groups. Using infinite products of finite groups, we construct several examples of profinite groups with unexpected properties: (1) an UBERG group which cannot be finitely generated, (2) a group of type $PFP_\infty$ which is not UBERG and not finitely generated and (3) a group of type $PFP_\infty$ with superexponential subgroup growth.

Probabilistic finiteness properties for profinite groups

We introduce various probablistic finiteness conditions for profinite groups related to positive finite generation (PFG). We investigate completed group rings which are PFG as modules, and use this to answer a question of Kionke and the second author on positively finitely related groups. Using the theory of projective covers, we define and characterise a probabilistic version of the $\mathrm{FP}_n$ property for profinite groups, called $\mathrm{PFP}_n$. Finally, we prove how these conditions are related to previously defined finiteness conditions and each other.

On pro-$p$ groups with quadratic cohomology

The main purpose of this article is to study pro-$p$ groups with quadratic $\mathbb{F}_p$-cohomology algebra, i.e. $H^\bullet$-quadratic pro-$p$ groups. Prime examples of such groups are the maximal Galois pro-$p$ groups of fields containing a primitive root of unity of order $p$. We show that the amalgamated free product and HNN-extension of $H^\bullet$-quadratic pro-$p$ groups is $H^\bullet$-quadratic, under certain necessary conditions. Moreover, we introduce and investigate a new family of pro-$p$ groups that yields many new examples of $H^\bullet$-quadratic groups: $p$-RAAGs. These examples generalise right angled Artin groups in the category of pro-$p$ groups. Finally, we explore "Tits alternative behaviour" of $H^\bullet$-quadratic pro-$p$ groups.

On the asymptotic behaviour of the number of Beauville and non-Beauville $p$-groups

We find asymptotic lower bounds for the numbers of both Beauville and non-Beauville $2$-generator finite $p$-groups of a fixed order, which turn out to coincide with the best known asymptotic lower bound for the total number of $2$-generator finite $p$-groups of the same order. This shows that both Beauville and non-Beauville groups are abundant within the family of finite $p$-groups.

Positively finitely related profinite groups

We define and study the class of positively finitely related (PFR) profinite groups. Positive finite relatedness is a probabilistic property of profinite groups which provides a first step to defining higher finiteness properties of profinite groups which generalize the positively finitely generated groups introduced by Avinoam Mann. We prove many asymptotic characterisations of PFR groups, for instance we show the following: a finitely presented profinite group is PFR if and only if it has at most exponential representation growth, uniformly over finite fields (in other words: the completed group algebra has polynomial maximal ideal growth). From these characterisations we deduce several structural results on PFR profinite groups.

Embedding properties of hereditarily just infinite profinite wreath products

We study infinitely iterated wreath products of finite permutation groups with respect to product actions. In particular, we prove that, for every non-empty class of finite simple groups $\mathcal{X}$, there exists a finitely generated hereditarily just infinite profinite group $W$ with composition factors in $\mathcal{X}$ such that any countably based profinite group with composition factors in $\mathcal{X}$ can be embedded into $W$. Additionally we investigate when infinitely iterated wreath products of finite simple groups with respect to product actions are co-Hopfian or non-co-Hopfian.

On self-similar finite $p$-groups

In this paper, we address the following question: when is a finite $p$-group $G$ self-similar, i.e. when can $G$ be faithfully represented as a self-similar group of automorphisms of the $p$-adic tree? We show that, if $G$ is a self-similar finite $p$-group of rank $r$, then its order is bounded by a function of $p$ and $r$. This applies in particular to finite $p$-groups of a given coclass. In the particular case of groups of maximal class, that is, of coclass $1$, we can fully answer the question above: a $p$-group of maximal class $G$ is self-similar if and only if it contains an elementary abelian maximal subgroup over which $G$ splits. Furthermore, in that case the order of $G$ is at most $p^p+1$, and this bound is sharp.

Finite generation of iterated wreath products in product action

Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a sequence of finite perfect transitive permutation groups with uniformly bounded number of generators. We prove that the infinitely iterated wreath product in product action of the groups in $\mathcal{S}$ is topologically finitely generated, provided that the actions of the groups in $\mathcal{S}$ are not regular. We prove that our bound has the right asymptotic behaviour. We also deduce that other infinitely iterated mixed wreath products of groups in $\mathcal{S}$ are finitely generated. Finally we apply our methods to find explicitly two generators of infinitely iterated wreath products in product action of special sequences $\mathcal{S}$.
