Minimally singular functions and the rigidity problem for Steiner's perimeter inequality

Let $n\geq 1$, and let $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be an open and connected set with finite Lebesgue measure. Among functions of bounded variation in $\Omega$ we introduce the class of \emph{minimally singular} functions. Inspired by the original theory of Vol'pert of one-dimensional restrictions of $BV$ functions, we provide a geometric characterization for this class of functions via the introduction of a pseudometric that we call \emph{singular vertical distance}. As an application, we present a characterization result for \emph{rigidity} of equality cases for Steiner's perimeter inequality. By \emph{rigidity} we mean that the only extremals for Steiner's perimeter inequality are vertical translations of the Steiner symmetric set.

A quantitative version of the Gidas-Ni-Nirenberg Theorem

A celebrated result by Gidas, Ni & Nirenberg asserts that classical positive solutions to semilinear equations $- \Delta u = f(u)$ in a ball vanishing at the boundary must be radial and radially decreasing. In this paper we consider small perturbations of this equation and study the quantitative stability counterpart of this result.

$\Gamma$-convergence for free-discontinuity problems in linear elasticity: Homogenization and relaxation

We analyze the $\Gamma$-convergence of sequences of free-discontinuity functionals arising in the modeling of linear elastic solids with surface discontinuities, including phenomena as fracture, damage, or material voids. We prove compactness with respect to $\Gamma$-convergence and represent the $\Gamma$-limit in an integral form defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$). We identify the integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas and prove a non-interaction property between bulk and surface contributions. Eventually, we investigate sequences of corresponding boundary value problems and show convergence of minimum values and minimizers. In particular, our techniques allow to characterize relaxations of functionals on $GSBD^p$, and cover the classical case of periodic homogenization.

Lower semicontinuity for functionals defined on piecewise rigid functions and on $GSBD$

In this work, we provide a characterization result for lower semicontinuity of surface energies defined on piecewise rigid functions, i.e., functions which are piecewise affine on a Caccioppoli partition where the derivative in each component is a skew symmetric matrix. This characterization is achieved by means of an integral condition, called $BD$-ellipticity, which is in the spirit of $BV$-ellipticity defined by Ambrosio and Braides. By specific examples we show that this novel concept is in fact stronger compared to its $BV$ analog. We further provide a sufficient condition implying $BD$-ellipticity which we call symmetric joint convexity. This notion can be checked explicitly for certain classes of surface energies which are relevant for applications, e.g., for variational fracture models. Finally, we give a direct proof that surface energies with symmetric jointly convex integrands are lower semicontinuous also on the larger space of $GSBD^p$ functions.

Rigidity of Steiner's inequality for the anisotropic perimeter

The aim of this work is to study the rigidity problem for Steiner's inequality for the anisotropic perimeter, that is, the situation in which the only extremals of the inequality are vertical translations of the Steiner symmetral that we are considering. Our main contribution consists in giving conditions under which rigidity in the anisotropic setting is equivalent to rigidity in the Euclidean setting. Such conditions are given in term of a restriction to the possible values of the normal vectors to the boundary of the Steiner symmetral (see Corollary 1.17, and Corollary 1.18).

Rigidity for perimeter inequality under spherical symmetrisation

Necessary and sufficient conditions for rigidity of the perimeter inequality under spherical symmetrisation are given. That is, a characterisation for the uniqueness (up to orthogonal transformations) of the extremals is provided. This is obtained through a careful analysis of the equality cases, and studying fine properties of the circular symmetrisation, which was firstly introduced by P\'olya in 1950.
