The truncated octahedron minimizes surface area among parallelohedra of equal volume

We prove that the regular truncated octahedron uniquely minimizes surface area among all parallelohedra of fixed volume. Equivalently, every three-dimensional parallelohedron $P$ satisfies \[ \frac{\mathcal H^2(\partial P)}{|P|^{2/3}} \ge \frac{3(1+2\sqrt3)}{4^{2/3}}, \] with equality if and only if $P$ is similar to the regular truncated octahedron. Among the non-truncated Fedorov types we prove a stronger sharp bound, attained uniquely by the regular rhombic dodecahedron.

Anisotropic isoperimetric double tilings of the plane

We study periodic partitions of the plane into two distinct cells minimizing the anisotropic $\ell_1$-perimeter. For a rectangular lattice $G$, we compute explicitly the $(G,\ell_1)$-isoperimetric profile and classify all minimizers. When one cell has small area, the optimal tiling is generated by a square and a chipped rectangle, while in the remaining regime the tiling is generated by two adjacent rectangles. Further minimizing over all possible planar lattices, we show that the $\ell_1$-isoperimetric profile is attained by the Pythagorean double tiling of two axis-aligned squares sharing a vertex. This configuration is unique unless the two cells are assigned the same area. Finally, we prove that the limiting (non periodic) partitions obtained by sending one volume to infinity are locally $\ell_1$-isoperimetric.

Concentration effects and $\Gamma$-limit for the elastica functional for open and closed curves

We study the $\Gamma$-convergence of a class of elastica-type energies defined on immersed planar curves and depending on a small positive parameter $\epsilon$. As $\epsilon\to 0^+$, sequences with equibounded energy develop concentration phenomena in the curvature, leading to the emergence of singularities described by atomic measures. This naturally gives rise to a limiting framework in terms of pointed curves, consisting of a curve together with a measure encoding curvature concentration. We characterize the first-order $\Gamma$-limit in two settings: for immersed open curves with fixed endpoints and boundary conditions on the tangents, and for immersed closed curves of prescribed length. In both cases, the limiting energy depends only on the number of concentration points and is expressed as a sum of contributions, each given by an integer multiple of $2\pi$. A key feature of the problem is that the rescaled energies exhibit a structure closely related to one-dimensional Modica--Mortola type functionals.

On the independence number of de Bruijn graphs

We derive the asymptotic formula $\alpha(k,q)=\lambda_{k-1}q^k+o(q^k)$, where $\alpha(k,q)$ is the independence number of the de Bruijn graph $B(k,q)$, and $\lambda_{k-1}$ is a constant arising from a variational problem on the unit $(k-1)$-dimensional cube. When $k=4$, we show the bounds $91/240\le \lambda_3\le 11/28$. For odd prime $k$, we analyse the binary case $q=2$ via a phase reduction on rotation orbits. For $k=11,13,17$ this yields compact orbit-marker certificates for optimal constructions. Combined with a lifting theorem by Lichiardopol, these certificates give exact formulas for $\alpha(11,q)$, $\alpha(13,q)$, and $\alpha(17,q)$ for all $q\ge2$, extending the known cases $k=3,5,7$.

Local minimality of the truncated octahedron for the isoperimetric problem on parallelohedra

We investigate the isoperimetric problem for the Voronoi cells of three-dimensional lattices. Using Selling parameters, we derive an explicit closed formula for the scale-invariant isoperimetric quotient $F$ in terms of six non-negative variables. We then analyse the local behaviour of $F$ at the most relevant lattice configurations: we prove that the body-centered cubic lattice (BCC) is a strict local minimiser of $F$ at fixed volume, whereas the face-centered cubic lattice (FCC) and the simple cubic lattice (SC) are not local minimisers. Then, we consider a family of lattices which interpolates between BCC and FCC, showing that BCC is the global minimiser of $F$ restricted to this family.

Optimal sets for a geometric oscillation energy

We investigate the nonlocal energy corresponding to the $p$-oscillation of the unit normal vector for hypersurfaces, or the unit tangent vector for curves. The energy satisfies geometric inequalities with optimal constants $c(n,p)$ and $C(n,p)$ which are determined by a variational problem over the probability measures on the sphere. The extremal measures for such problem depend critically on the value of $p$. We prove existence of optimal sets for this energy under perimeter and volume constraint, and characterize their shape.

Non-local planelike minimizers and $\Gamma$-convergence of periodic energies to a local anisotropic perimeter

We investigate a homogenization problem related to a non-local interface energy with a periodic forcing term. We show the existence of planelike minimizers for such energy. Moreover, we prove that, under suitable assumptions on the non-local kernel and the external field, the sequence of rescaled energies $\Gamma$-converges to a suitable local anisotropic perimeter, where the anisotropy is defined as the limit of the normalized energy of a planelike minimizer in larger and larger cubes (i.e., what is called in jargon "stable norm"). To obtain this, we also establish several auxiliary results, including: the minimality of the level sets of the minimizers, explicit bounds on the oscillations of the minimizers, density estimates for almost minimizers, and non-local perimeter estimates in the large.

A fourth-order regularization of the curvature flow of immersed plane curves with Dirichlet boundary conditions

We consider a fourth-order regularization of the curvature flow for an immersed plane curve with fixed boundary, using an elastica-type functional depending on a small positive parameter $\varepsilon$. We show that the approximating flow smoothly converges, as $\varepsilon \to 0^+$, to the curvature flow of the curve with Dirichlet boundary conditions for all times before the first singularity of the limit flow.

Euler's elastica functional as a large mass limit of a two-dimensional non-local isoperimetric problem

We consider a large mass limit of the non-local isoperimetric problem with a repulsive Yukawa potential in two space dimensions. In this limit, the non-local term concentrates on the boundary, resulting in the existence of a critical regime in which the perimeter and the non-local terms cancel each other out to leading order. We show that under appropriate scaling assumptions the next-order $\Gamma$-limit of the energy with respect to the $L^1$ convergence of the rescaled sets is given by a weighted sum of the perimeter and Euler's elastica functional, where the latter is understood via the lower-semicontinuous relaxation and is evaluated on the system of boundary curves. As a consequence, we prove that in the considered regime the energy minimizers always exist and converge to either disks or annuli, depending on the relative strength of the elastica term.

Crystalline elastic flow of polygonal curves: long time behaviour and convergence to stationary solutions

Given a planar crystalline anisotropy, we study the crystalline elastic flow of immersed polygonal curves, possibly also unbounded. Assuming that the segments evolve by parallel translation (as it happens in the standard crystalline curvature flow), we prove that a unique regular flow exists until a maximal time when some segments having zero crystalline curvature disappear. Furthermore, for closed polygonal curves, we analyze the behaviour at the maximal time, and show that it is possible to restart the flow finitely many times, yielding a globally in time evolution, that preserves the index of the curve. Next, we investigate the long-time properties of the flow using a Lojasiewicz-Simon-type inequality, and show that, as time tends to infinity, the flow fully converges to a stationary curve. We also provide a complete classification of the stationary solutions and a partial classification of the translating solutions in the case of the square anisotropy.

Periodic double tilings of the plane

We study tilings of the plane composed of two repeating tiles of different assigned areas relative to an arbitrary periodic lattice. We classify isoperimetric configurations (i.e., configurations with minimal length of the interfaces) both in the case of a fixed lattice or for an arbitrary periodic lattice. We find three different configurations depending on the ratio between the assigned areas of the two tiles and compute the isoperimetric profile. The three different configurations are composed of tiles with a different number of circular edges, moreover, different configurations exhibit a different optimal lattice. Finally, we raise some open problems related to our investigation.

On the total surface area of potato packings

We prove that if we fill without gaps a bag with infinitely many potatoes, in such a way that they touch each other in few points, then the total surface area of the potatoes must be infinite. In this context potatoes are measurable subsets of the Euclidean space, the bag is any open set of the same space. As we show, this result also holds in the general context of doubling (even locally) metric measure spaces satisfying Poincar\'e inequality, in particular in smooth Riemannian manifolds and even in some sub-Riemannian spaces.

A charged liquid drop model with Willmore energy

We consider a variational model of electrified liquid drops, involving competition between surface tension and charge repulsion. Since the natural model happens to be ill-posed, we show that by adding to the perimeter a Willmore-type energy, the problem turns back to be well-posed. We also prove that for small charge the droplets is spherical.

Minimal periodic foams with fixed inradius

In this note we show existence and regularity of periodic tilings of the Euclidean space into equal cells containing a ball of fixed radius, which minimize either the classical or the fractional perimeter. We also discuss some qualitative properties of minimizers in dimensions $3$ and $4$.

Lattice tilings with minimal perimeter and unequal volumes

We study periodic tessellations of the Euclidean space with unequal cells arising from the minimization of perimeter functionals. Existence results and qualitative properties of minimizers are discussed for different classes of problems, involving local and non-local perimeters. Regularity is then addressed in the general case under volume penalization, and in the planar case with the standard perimeter, prescribing the volumes of each cell. Finally, we show the optimality of hexagonal tilings among partitions with almost equal areas.
