On Exponentially Long Prethermalization Timescales in Isolated Quantum Systems

We study prethermalization in time-independent quantum many-body systems on a $d$-dimensional lattice with an extensive local Hamiltonian $H=N+\varepsilon P$, in the regime where $\varepsilon \ll 1$. We prove that the prethermal timescale is exponential in $\varepsilon_0/\varepsilon$, where $\varepsilon_0$ is an explicit scale determined by the locality exponent and the local norm of $P$. We also construct two extensive local quasi-conserved quantities whose variation remains exponentially small throughout this time interval.

Random initial data and average shock time in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain

We investigate the dynamics of the Fermi--Pasta--Ulam--Tsingou chain with long-wavelength random initial data. When the energy per particle is small, thermal equilibrium is not reached on a fast timescale and the system enters prethermalization. The formation of the prethermal state is characterized by the development of a Burgers-type shock and the onset of a turbulent-like spectrum with a time dependent exponent $\zeta(t)$ in the inertial range. We perform a significant step forward by demonstrating that these features are robust under generic long-wavelength random initial conditions. By employing advanced probabilistic techniques inspired by the works of Dudley and Talagrand, we derive a sharp asymptotic expression for the average shock time in the thermodynamic limit. For large $p$, this time scales as $(p \sqrt{\log p})^{-1}$, where $p$ is the number of excited modes proving that it is an intensive quantity up to a logarithmic correction in the size of the system.

Polynomial Prethermal Lifetimes in Non Smoothly Driven Quantum Systems

We study the dynamics of a quantum many-body lattice system with a local Hamiltonian subjected to a quasi-periodic driving with finite regularity. For sufficiently large driving frequencies, we prove that the system remains in a prethermal state for times growing polynomially with the frequency, and we show the optimality of this bound by constructing an explicit example that nearly saturates it. Within this prethermal regime, the dynamics is captured by an effective time-independent local Hamiltonian close to the undriven one. The proof relies on a non convergent normal form scheme, combined with original smoothing techniques for finitely differentiable local operators, and Lieb-Robinson bounds.

The role of integrability in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou-like models

In these lecture notes, we present, contextualize, and discuss the phenomenon of metastability (or prethermalization) in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou lattice and similar models from the viewpoint of perturbation theory. We provide an updated state-of-the-art description of this intermediate state in terms of the underlying integrable dynamics, in particular the Korteweg-de Vries and inviscid Burgers equations.

Trapping by repulsion: the NLS with a delta-prime

We establish the existence and provide explicit expressions for the stationary states of the one-dimensional Schr\"odinger equation with a repulsive delta-prime potential and a focusing nonlinearity of power type. Furthermore, we prove that, if the nonlinearity is subcritical, then ground states exist for any strength of the delta-prime interaction and for every positive value of the mass. This result supplies an example of ground states arising from a repulsive potential, a counterintuitive phenomenon explained by the emergence of an additional dimension in the energy space, induced by the delta-prime interaction. This new dimension contains states of lower energy and is thus responsible for the existence of nonlinear ground states that do not originate from linear eigenfunctions. The explicit form of the ground states is derived by addressing the ancillary problem of minimizing the action functional on the Nehari manifold. We solve such problem in the subcritical, critical, and supercritical regimes.

Non-relativistic limit of Dirac Hamiltonians with Aharonov-Bohm fields

We characterise the families of self-adjoint Dirac and Schr\"{o}dinger operators with Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field, and we exploit the non-relativistic limit of infinite light speed to connect the former to the latter. The limit consists of the customary removal of the rest energy and of a suitable scaling, with the light speed, of the short-scale boundary condition of self-adjointness. This ensures that the scattering length of the Aharonov-Bohm interaction is preserved along the limit. Noteworthy is the fact that the whole family of Dirac-AB operators is mapped, in the non-relativistic limit, into the physically relevant sub-family of $s$-wave, angular-momentum-commuting, Schr\"{o}\-dinger-AB Hamiltonians with relativistic Dirac approximants.

Energy cascade and Burgers turbulence in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain

The dynamics of initial long-wavelength excitations of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain has been the subject of intense investigations since the pioneering work of Fermi and collaborators. We have recently found a new regime where the spectrum of the Fourier modes decays with a power-law and we have interpreted this regime as a transient turbulence associated with the Burgers equation. In this paper we present the full derivation of the latter equation from the lattice dynamics using a newly developed infinite dimensional Hamiltonian perturbation theory. This theory allows us to relate the time evolution of the Fourier spectrum $E_k$ of the Burgers equation to the one of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain. As a consequence, we derive analytically both the shock time and the power-law $-8/3$ of the spectrum at this time. Using the shock time as a unit, we follow numerically the time-evolution of the spectrum and observe the persistence of the power $-2$ over an extensive time window. The exponent $-2$ has been widely discussed in the literature on the Burgers equation. The analysis of the Burgers equation in Fourier space also gives information on the time evolution of the energy of each single mode which, at short time, is also a power-law depending on the $k$-th wavenumber $E_k \sim t^{2k-2}$. This approach to the FPUT dynamics opens the way to a wider study of scaling regimes arising from more general initial conditions.

Singularity: a Seventh Memo?

In this paper we explore the relationships between Calvino's memos and Mathematics. In the first part, we discuss how Lightness, Quickness, Exactitude, Visibility, Multiplicity are present in the mathematical language, reasoning and in the work of the mathematician. In addiction, we follow a similar path for the topics of Calvino's lecture of which we only know the title or some notes. In the final part, we explain why `Singularity' could be chosen as a possible topic for Calvino's seventh lecture.

Prethermalization and conservation laws in quasi-periodically-driven quantum systems

We study conservation laws of a general class of quantum many-body systems subjected to an external time dependent quasi-periodic driving. {When the frequency of the driving is large enough or the strength of the driving is small enough, we prove a Nekhoroshev-type stability result: we show that the system exhibits a prethermal state for stretched exponentially long times in the perturbative parameter}. Moreover, we prove the quasi-conservation of the constants of motion of the unperturbed Hamiltonian and we analyze their physical meaning in examples of relevance to condensed matter and statistical physics.

Two dimensional NLS ground states with attractive Coulomb potential and point interaction

We study the existence and the properties of ground states at fixed mass for a focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in dimension two with a point interaction, an attractive Coulomb potential and a nonlinearity of power type. We prove that for any negative value of the Coulomb charge, for any positive value of the mass and for any L$^2$-subcritical power nonlinearity, such ground states exist and exhibit a logarithmic singularity where the interaction is placed. Moreover, up to multiplication by a phase factor, they are positive, radially symmetric and decreasing. An analogous result is obtained also for minimizers of the action restricted to the Nehari manifold, getting the existence also in the L$^2$-critical and supercritical cases.

Universality in the 2d quasi-periodic Ising model and Harris-Luck irrelevance

We prove that in the 2d Ising Model with a weak bidimensional quasi-periodic disorder in the interaction, the critical behavior is the same as in the non-disordered case, that is the critical exponents for the specific heat and energy-energy correlations are identical and no logarithmic corrections are present. The disorder produces a quasi-periodic modulation of the amplitude of the correlations and a renormalization of the velocities, that is the coefficients of the rescaling of positions, and of the critical temperature. The result establishes the validity of the prediction based on the Harris-Luck criterion and it provides the first rigorous proof of universality in the Ising model in presence of quasi-periodic disorder in both directions and for any angle. Small divisors are controlled assuming a Diophantine condition on the frequencies and convergence of the series is proved by Renormalization Group analysis.

Burgers turbulence in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain

We prove analytically and show numerically that the dynamics of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain is characterised by a transient Burgers turbulence regime on a wide range of time and energy scales. This regime is present at long wavelengths and energy per particle small enough that equipartition is not reached on a fast time scale. In this range, we prove that the driving mechanism to thermalisation is the formation of a shock that can be predicted using a pair of generalised Burgers equations. We perform a perturbative calculation at small energy per particle, proving that the energy spectrum of the chain $E_k$ decays as a power law, $E_k\sim k^{-\zeta(t)}$, on an extensive range of wavenumbers $k$. We predict that $\zeta(t)$ takes first the value $8/3$ at the Burgers shock time, and then reaches a value close to $2$ within two shock times. The value of the exponent $\zeta=2$ persists for several shock times before the system eventually relaxes to equipartition. During this wide time-window, an exponential cut-off in the spectrum is observed at large $k$, in agreement with previous results. Such a scenario turns out to be universal, i.e. independent of the parameters characterising the system and of the initial condition, once time is measured in units of the shock time.

Hamiltonian field theory close to the wave equation: from Fermi-Pasta-Ulam to water waves

In the present work we analyse the structure of the Hamiltonian field theory in the neighbourhood of the wave equation $q_{tt}=q_{xx}$. We show that, restricting to ``graded'' polynomial perturbations in $q_x$, $p$ and their space derivatives of higher order, the local field theory is equivalent, in the sense of the Hamiltonian normal form, to that of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy of second order. Within this framework, we explain the connection between the theory of water waves and the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam system.

Dirac-Coulomb Operators with Infinite Mass Boundary Conditions in Sectors

We investigate the properties of self-adjointness of a two-dimensional Dirac operator on an infinite sector with infinite mass boundary conditions and in presence of a Coulomb-type potential with the singularity placed on the vertex. In the general case, we prove the appropriate Dirac-Hardy inequality and exploit the Kato-Rellich theory. In the explicit case of a Coulomb potential, we describe the self-adjoint extensions for all the intensities of the potential relying on a radial decomposition in partial wave subspaces adapted to the infinite-mass boundary conditions. Finally, we integrate our results giving a description of the spectrum of these operators.

Self-adjoint extension schemes and modern applications to quantum Hamiltonians

This monograph contains revised and enlarged materials from previous lecture notes of undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars delivered by both authors over the last years on a subject that is central both in abstract operator theory and in applications to quantum mechanics: to decide whether a given densely defined and symmetric operator on Hilbert space admits a unique self-adjoint realisation, namely its operator closure, or whether instead it admits an infinite multiplicity of distinct self-adjoint extensions, and in the latter case to classify them and characterise their main features (operator and quadratic form domains, spectrum, etc.) This is at the same time a very classical, well established field, corresponding to the first part of the monograph, and a territory of novel, modern applications, a selection of which, obviously subjective to some extent, but also driven by a pedagogical criterion, is presented in depth in the second part. A number of models are discussed, which are receiving today new or renewed interest in mathematical physics, in particular from the point of view of realising certain operators of interests self-adjointly, classifying their self-adjoint extensions as actual quantum Hamiltonians, studying their spectral and scattering properties, and the like, but also from the point of view of intermediate technical questions that have theoretical interest per se, such as characterising the corresponding operator closures and adjoints.

Heat equation with inverse-square potential of bridging type across two half-lines

The heat equation with inverse square potential on both half-lines of $\mathbb{R}$ is discussed in the presence of \emph{bridging} boundary conditions at the origin. The problem is the lowest energy (zero-momentum) mode of the transmission of the heat flow across a Grushin-type cylinder, a generalisation of an almost Riemannian structure with compact singularity set. This and related models are reviewed, and the issue is posed of the analysis of the dispersive properties for the heat kernel generated by the underlying positive self-adjoint operator. Numerical integration is shown that provides a first insight and relevant qualitative features of the solution at later times.

Quantum particle across Grushin singularity

A class of models is considered for a quantum particle constrained on degenerate Riemannian manifolds known as Grushin cylinders, and moving freely subject only to the underlying geometry: the corresponding spectral analysis is developed in detail in view of the phenomenon of transmission across the singularity that separates the two half-cylinders. Whereas the classical counterpart always consists of a particle falling in finite time along the geodesics onto the metric's singularity locus, the quantum models may display geometric confinement, or on the opposite partial transmission and reflection. All the local realisations of the free (Laplace-Beltrami) quantum Hamiltonian are examined as non-equivalent protocols of transmission/reflection and the structure of their spectrum is characterised, including when applicable their ground state and positivity. Besides, the stationary scattering analysis is developed and transmission and reflection coefficients are calculated. This allows to comprehend the distinguished status of the so-called `bridging' transmission protocol previously identified in the literature, which we recover and study within our systematic analysis.

Korteweg-de Vries and Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou: asymptotic integrability of quasi unidirectional waves

In this paper we construct a higher order expansion of the manifold of quasi unidirectional waves in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain. We also approximate the dynamics on this manifold. As perturbation parameter we use $h^2=1/n^2$, where $n$ is the number of particles of the chain. It is well known that the dynamics of quasi unidirectional waves is described to first order by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Here we show that the dynamics to second order is governed by a combination of the first two nontrivial equations in the KdV hierarchy -- for any choice of parameters in the FPU potential. On the other hand, we find that only if the parameters of the FPU potential satisfy a condition, then a combination of the first three nontrivial equations in the KdV hierarchy determines the dynamics of quasi unidirectional waves to third order. The required condition is satisfied by the Toda chain. Our results suggest why the close-to-integrable behavior of the FPU chain (the FPU paradox) persists on a time scale longer than explained by the KdV approximation, and also how a breakdown of integrability (detachment from the KdV hierarchy) may responsible for the eventual thermalization of the system.
