Optimal control of differentially flat underactuated planar robots in the perspective of oscillation mitigation

Underactuated robots are characterized by a larger number of degrees of freedom than actuators and if they are designed with a specific mass distribution, they can be controlled by means of differential flatness theory. This structural property enables the development of lightweight and cost-effective robotic systems with enhanced dexterity. However, a key challenge lies in managing the passive joints, whose control demands precise and comprehensive dynamic modeling of the system. To simplify dynamic models, particularly for low-speed trajectories, friction is often neglected. While this assumption simplifies analysis and control design, it introduces residual oscillations of the end-effector about the target position. In this paper, the possibility of using optimal control along with differential flatness control is investigated to improve the tracking of the planned trajectories. First, the study was carried out through formal analysis, and then, it was validated by means of numerical simulations. Results highlight that optimal control can be used to plan the flat variables considering different (quadratic) performance indices: control effort, i.e. motor torque, and potential energy of the considered underactuated joint. Moreover, the minimization of potential energy can be used to design motion laws that are robust against variation of the stiffness and damping of the underactuated joint, thus reducing oscillations in the case of stiffness/damping mismatch.

Forbal: Force Balanced 2-5 Degree of Freedom Robot Manipulator Built from a Five Bar Linkage

A force balanced manipulator design based on the closed chain planar five bar linkage is developed and experimentally validated. We present 2 variants as a modular design: Forbal-2, a planar 2-DOF manipulator, and its extension to 5-DOF spatial motion called Forbal-5. The design considerations in terms of geometric, kinematic, and dynamic design that fulfill the force balance conditions while maximizing workspace are discussed. Then, the inverse kinematics of both variants are derived from geometric principles. We validate the improvements from force balancing the manipulator through comparative experiments with counter mass balanced and unbalanced configurations. The results show how the balanced configuration yields a reduction in the average reaction moments of up to 66%, a reduction of average joint torques of up to 79%, as well as a noticeable reduction in position error for Forbal-2. For Forbal-5, which has a higher end effector payload mass, the joint torques are reduced up to 84% for the balanced configuration. Experimental results validate that the balanced manipulator design is suitable for applications where the reduction of joint torques and reaction forces/moments helps achieve millimeter level precision.

Experimental Validation of Light Cable-Driven Elbow-Assisting Device L-CADEL Design

This paper presents a new design of CADEL, a cable-driven elbow-assisting device, with light weighting and control improvements. The new device design is appropriate to be more portable and user-oriented solution, presenting additional facilities with respect to the original design. One of potential benefits of improved portability can be envisaged in the possibility of house and hospital usage keeping social distancing while allowing rehabilitation treatments even during a pandemic spread. Specific attention has been devoted to design main mechatronic components by developing specific kinematics models. The design process includes an implementation of specific control hardware and software. The kinematic model of the new design is formulated and features are evaluated through numerical simulations and experimental tests. An evaluation from original design highlights the proposed improvements mainly in terms of comfort, portability and user-oriented operation.
