Almost Affine Vector Rank-Metric Codes

We define almost affine vector rank-metric codes as subsets $\mathcal{C}\subseteq \mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n$ whose canonical projections have cardinalities that are powers of $q^m$, and prove that they naturally induce $q$-matroids. We establish that the operations of puncturing and shortening correspond to restriction and contraction of the $q$-matroid, and show that the rank-weight and formal dual distance distributions are determined by the induced $q$-matroid. We briefly discuss applications to perfect $q$-matroid ports in linear network coding, and show that disconnected $q$-matroids need not induce disconnected ports. Finally, we show that certain Additive Generalized Twisted Gabidulin codes yield direct examples of strictly almost affine rank-metric codes, alongside a separate construction derived from proper finite semifields.

Constructions of Rank-Metric Codes of Small Tensor Rank

Rank-metric codes are subspaces of matrices over finite fields endowed with the rank metric and admit a natural tensorial representation. The tensor rank provides a measure of the minimal size of a decomposition of a code into rank-one tensors. Kruskal showed that the tensor rank of a rank-metric code of dimension $k$ and minimum rank distance $d$ is at least $k + d - 1$, and codes meeting this bound with equality are called minimal tensor rank (MTR) codes. It is known from algebraic complexity theory that the existence of an MTR code implies the existence of a maximum distance separable (MDS) code. In this work, we establish new results relating the tensor rank of a rank-metric code to the parameters of associated linear codes in the Hamming metric and introduce the notion of tensor rank defect. We then develop new constructions of rank-metric codes with small tensor rank defect using algebraic geometry (AG) codes.

On QC and GQC algebraic geometry codes

We present new constructions of quasi-cyclic (QC) and generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes from algebraic curves. Unlike previous approaches based on elliptic curves, our method applies to curves that are Kummer extensions of the rational function field, including hyperelliptic, norm-trace, and Hermitian curves. This allows QC codes with flexible co-index. Explicit parameter formulas are derived using known automorphism-group classifications.

The geometry of covering codes in the sum-rank metric

We introduce the concept of a sum-rank saturating system and outline its correspondence to a covering properties of a sum-rank metric code. We consider the problem of determining the shortest sum-rank-$\rho$-saturating systems of a fixed dimension, which is equivalent to the covering problem in the sum-rank metric. We obtain upper and lower bounds on this quantity. We also give constructions of saturating systems arising from geometrical structures.

Minimal codewords in Norm-Trace codes

In this paper, we consider the affine variety codes obtained evaluating the polynomials $by=a_kx^k+\dots+a_1x+a_0$, $b,a_i\in\mathbb{F}_{q^r}$, at the affine $\F_{q^r}$-rational points of the Norm-Trace curve. In particular, we investigate the weight distribution and the set of minimal codewords. Our approach, which uses tools of algebraic geometry, is based on the study of the absolutely irreducibility of certain algebraic varieties.

Saturating systems and the rank covering radius

We introduce the concept of a rank saturating system and outline its correspondence to a rank-metric code with a given covering radius. We consider the problem of finding the value of $s_{q^m/q}(k,\rho)$, which is the minimum $\mathbb{F}_q$-dimension of a $q$-system in $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^k$ which is rank $\rho$-saturating. This is equivalent to the covering problem in the rank metric. We obtain upper and lower bounds on $s_{q^m/q}(k,\rho)$ and evaluate it for certain values of $k$ and $\rho$. We give constructions of rank $\rho$-saturating systems suggested from geometry.

Rational points on cubic surfaces and AG codes from the Norm-Trace curve

In this paper we give a complete characterization of the intersections between the Norm-Trace curve over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$ and the curves of the form $y=ax^3+bx^2+cx+d$, generalizing a previous result by Bonini and Sala, providing more detailed information about the weight spectrum of one-point AG codes arising from such curve. We also derive, with explicit computations, some general bounds for the number of rational points on a cubic surface defined over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$.

On the weight distribution of some minimal codes

Minimal codes are a class of linear codes which gained interest in the last years, thanks to their connections to secret sharing schemes. In this paper we provide the weight distribution and the parameters of families of minimal codes recently introduced by C. Tang, Y. Qiu, Q. Liao, Z. Zhou, answering some open questions.

On the weights of dual codes arising from the GK curve

In this paper we investigate some dual algebraic-geometric codes associated with the Giulietti-Korchm\'aros maximal curve. We compute the minimum distance and the minimum weight codewords of such codes and we investigate the generalized hamming weights of such codes.

Minimal linear codes arising from blocking sets

Minimal linear codes are algebraic objects which gained interest in the last twenty years, due to their link with Massey's secret sharing schemes. In this context, Ashikhmin and Barg provided a useful and a quite easy to handle sufficient condition for a linear code to be minimal, which has been applied in the construction of many minimal linear codes. In this paper, we generalize some recent constructions of minimal linear codes which are not based on Ashikhmin-Barg's condition. More combinatorial and geometric methods are involved in our proofs. In particular, we present a family of codes arising from particular blocking sets, which are well-studied combinatorial objects. In this context, we will need to define cutting blocking sets and to prove some of their relations with other notions in blocking sets' theory. At the end of the paper, we provide one explicit family of cutting blocking sets and related minimal linear codes, showing that infinitely many of its members do not satisfy the Ashikhmin-Barg's condition.

Planar Polynomials arising from Linearized polynomials

In this paper we construct planar polynomials of the type $f_{A,B}(x)=x(x^{q^2}+Ax^{q}+Bx)\in \mathbb{F}_{q^3}[x]$, with $A,B \in \mathbb{F}_{q}$. In particular we completely classify the pairs $(A,B)\in \mathbb{F}_{q}^2$ such that $f_{A,B}(x)$ is planar using connections with algebraic curves over finite fields.

Intersections between the norm-trace curve and some low degree curves

In this paper we analyze the intersection between the norm-trace curve over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$ and the curves of the form $y=ax^3+bx^2+cx+d$, giving a complete characterization of the intersection between the curve and the parabolas, as well as sharp bounds for the other cases. This information is used for the determination of the weight distribution of some one-point AG codes constructed on the curve.

Minimal linear codes in odd characteristic

In this paper we generalize constructions in two recent works of Ding, Heng, Zhou to any field $\mathbb{F}_q$, $q$ odd, providing infinite families of minimal codes for which the Ashikhmin-Barg bound does not hold.

On plane curves given by separated polynomials and their automorphisms

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a plane curve defined over the algebraic closure $K$ of a prime finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ by a separated polynomial, that is $\mathcal{C}: A(y)=B(x)$, where $A(y)$ is an additive polynomial of degree $p^n$ and the degree $m$ of $B(X)$ is coprime with $p$. Plane curves given by separated polynomials are well-known and studied in the literature. However just few informations are known on their automorphism groups. In this paper we compute the full automorphism group of $\mathcal{C}$ when $m \not\equiv 1 \pmod {p^n}$ and $B(X)$ has just one root in $K$, that is $B(X)=b_m(X+b_{m-1}/mb_m)^m$ for some $b_m,b_{m-1} \in K$. Moreover, some sufficient conditions for the automorphism group of $\mathcal{C}$ to imply that $B(X)=b_m(X+b_{m-1}/mb_m)^m$ are provided. As a byproduct, the full automorphism group of the Norm-Trace curve $\mathcal{C}: x^{(q^r-1)/(q-1)}=y^{q^{r-1}}+y^{q^{r-2}}+\ldots+y$ is computed. Finally, these results are used to construct multi point AG codes with many automorphisms.
