Symmetry extension by condensation defects II: general dimensions and higher-groups

We discuss a class of symmetry structures in general spacetime dimension that arise when gauging symmetries in theories with a cubic 't Hooft anomaly. The anomaly mixes two Abelian discrete symmetries $A$ and $B$ with a characteristic class for an additional symmetry $C$, and we gauge $A\times B$. The novelty of this construction is that the resulting symmetry structure involves certain condensation defects of the dual symmetry $\widehat{A}\times\widehat{B}$. Specifically, these defects generate an invertible symmetry that extends $C$, either as an ordinary group extension or as a higher-group, depending on the characteristic class. We describe the corresponding charged operators and states, and illustrate the mechanism in several examples.

Confinement in a finite duality cascade

We provide several consistency checks of confining dynamics in a recently conjectured holographic dual of a four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory that flows from a conformal manifold in the UV to a finite set of isolated, fully gapped vacua in the IR. This is obtained by considering D3-branes at the conifold singularity in the presence of an O7-plane, leading to a background where all supergravity fields have a non-trivial profile. We compute holographically the expectation value of a Wilson loop in the fundamental representation and show that it obeys an area law. We then construct the domain walls which interpolate between different vacua in terms of D5-branes wrapping a compact three-cycle of the internal manifold. Their dynamics is governed by the (2+1)-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory predicted by field theory arguments, that reduces in the deep infrared to a TQFT whose inflow action correctly reproduces the mixed anomaly of the four-dimensional theory. Finally, we argue that, unlike in previous models in the literature, axionic strings are unstable in this background. This implies that the corresponding massless axion that would couple to them is absent, in agreement with the fact that the vacua are fully gapped.

Symmetry extension by condensation defects in five-dimensional gauge theories

We investigate the symmetry structure of five-dimensional Yang-Mills theories with $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ gauge algebra. These theories feature intertwined 0-, 1-, and 2-form symmetries, depending on the global variant one is considering. In the $SU(N)$ theory, there is a mixed 't Hooft anomaly between the instantonic 0-form symmetry and the electric 1-form symmetry. We show that in the $PSU(N)$ theory this translates into a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ extension of the instantonic symmetry, generated by an invertible condensation defect of the magnetic 2-form symmetry. We identify the charged configurations as linked 't Hooft surfaces, while pointlike instanton operators remain insensitive to the extension. We generalize our analysis to the $SU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_k$ global form and show that similar results hold, embedded now in a 3-group structure for generic $k$. We then apply our findings to $SO(3)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We determine the global form of the enhanced instantonic symmetry of its superconformal UV completion, showing that it arises through a similar symmetry extension mechanism from the parent $E_1$ theory, which is the UV completion of $SU(2)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Finally, we recast our results in the language of the symmetry topological field theory. As a warm-up, we also analyze Maxwell theory, highlighting analogous features involving continuous symmetries and composite currents.

Gravity, finite duality cascades and confinement

Cascading RG flows are characteristic of $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories realized by D3-branes probing singularities in the presence of fractional branes. A celebrated example is the Klebanov-Strassler model, which exhibits an infinite cascade that ends with confinement. In this work, we explore a related setup where the addition of an orientifold plane modifies the cascade structure: the RG flow now consists of a finite number of steps, originating from a UV fixed point with a finite number of degrees of freedom. We provide a supergravity solution dual to this flow, that reproduces all its salient features. The string frame curvature can be kept small up to parametrically large values of the holographic coordinate, larger than the one at which the first cascade step occurs.

On the Symmetry TFT of Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory

Three-dimensional Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory has the peculiar property that its one-form symmetry defects have non-trivial braiding, namely they are charged under the same symmetry they generate, which is then anomalous. This poses a few puzzles in describing the corresponding Symmetry TFT in a four-dimensional bulk. First, the braiding between lines at the boundary seems to be ill-defined when such lines are pulled into the bulk. Second, the Symmetry TFT appears to be too trivial to allow for topological boundary conditions encoding all the different global variants. We show that both of these puzzles can be solved by including endable (tubular) surfaces in the class of bulk topological operators one has to consider. In this way, we are able to reproduce all global variants of the theory, with their symmetries and their anomalies. We check the validity of our proposal also against a top-down holographic realization of the same class of theories.

On non-supersymmetric fixed points in five dimensions

We generalize recent results regarding the phase space of the mass deformed $E_1$ fixed point to a full class of five-dimensional superconformal field theories, known as $X_{1,N}$. As in the $E_1$ case, a phase transition occurs as a supersymmetry preserving and a supersymmetry breaking mass deformations are appropriately tuned. The order of such phase transition could not be unequivocally determined in the $E_1$ case. For $X_{1,N}$ instead, we can show that at large $N$ there exists a regime where the phase transition is second order. Our findings give supporting evidence for the existence of non-supersymmetric fixed points in five dimensions.

The Octagon at large M

Recently, the first instance of a model of D-branes at Calabi-Yau singularities where supersymmetry is broken dynamically into stable vacua has been proposed. This construction was based on a system of $N$ regular and $M=1$ fractional branes placed at the tip of the so-called (orientifolded) Octagon singularity. In this paper we show that this model admits a large $M$ generalization, having the same low energy effective dynamics. This opens up the possibility that the effect on geometry is smooth, and amenable to describing the gauge theory all along the RG flow, including the deep IR, in terms of a weakly coupled gravity dual background. The relevance of this result in the wider context of the string landscape and the Swampland program is also discussed.

Supersymmetry breaking deformations and phase transitions in five dimensions

We analyze a recently proposed supersymmetry breaking mass deformation of the $E_1$ superconformal fixed point in five dimensions which, at weak gauge coupling, leads to pure $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills and which was conjectured to lead to an interacting CFT at strong coupling. We provide an explicit geometric construction of the deformation using brane-web techniques and show that for large enough gauge coupling a global symmetry is spontaneously broken and the theory enters a new phase which, at infinite coupling, displays an instability. The Yang-Mills and the symmetry broken phases are separated by a phase transition. Depending on the structure of the potential, this can be first or second order.

Dimers, Orientifolds and Anomalies

We study $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories engineered via D-branes at orientifolds of toric singularities, where gauge anomalies are cancelled without the introduction of non-compact flavor branes. Using dimer model techniques, we derive geometric criteria for establishing whether a given singularity can admit anomaly-free D-brane configurations purely based on its toric data and the type of orientifold projection. Our results therefore extend the dictionary between geometric properties of singularities and physical properties of the corresponding gauge theories.

Dimers, Orientifolds and Stability of Supersymmetry Breaking Vacua

We study (orientifolded) toric Calabi-Yau singularities in search for D-brane configurations which lead to dynamical supersymmetry breaking at low energy. By exploiting dimer techniques we are able to determine that while most realizations lead to a Coulomb branch instability, a rather specific construction admits a fully stable supersymmetry breaking vacuum. We describe the geometric structure that a singularity should have in order to host such a construction, and present its simplest example, the Octagon.

Vacuum structure of large $N$ QCD$_3$ from holography

We study the vacuum structure of three-dimensional $SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to a Chern-Simons term at level $k$ and to $F$ fundamental Dirac fermions. We use a large $N$ holographic description based on a D3/D7 system in type IIB string theory compactified on a supersymmetry breaking circle. The multiple vacua of the theory and the transitions between them are nicely captured by the dual holographic background. The resulting phase diagram, which we derive both at leading and first subleading orders in the $1/N$ expansion, shows a rich structure where topological field theories, non-linear sigma models and first-order phase transitions appear.

The Octagon and the Non-Supersymmetric String Landscape

We present an orientifold of a toric singularity allowing for a configuration of fractional branes which corresponds to a gauge theory that dynamically breaks supersymmetry in a stable vacuum. This model represents the first such instance within the gauge/gravity duality.

On supersymmetry breaking vacua from D-branes at orientifold singularities

We present a large class of models of D-branes at (orientifold) Calabi-Yau singularities which enjoy dynamical supersymmetry breaking at low energy, by means of either the $SU(5)$ or 3-2 supersymmetry breaking models. Once embedded in a warped throat or, equivalently, in a large $N$ theory, all models display an instability along a Coulomb branch direction towards supersymmetry preserving vacua. Interestingly, the nature of the runaway mechanism is model-independent and has a precise geometrical interpretation. This naturally suggests the properties a Calabi-Yau singularity should have in order for such instability not to occur.

Charting the phase diagram of QCD$_\mathbf{3}$

We study the phase diagram of $SU(N)$ gauge theory in three space-time dimensions with a Chern-Simons term at level $k$, coupled to two sets of fundamental fermions with masses $m_1$ and $m_2$, respectively. The two-dimensional phase diagram that we propose shows a rich structure and widens in an interesting way previous results in the literature, to which it reduces in some limits. We present several checks of our proposal, including consistency with boson/fermion dualities. In this respect, we extensively comment on the structure of the scalar potential which is needed on the bosonic side of the duality.

Living on the walls of super-QCD

We study BPS domain walls in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ massive SQCD with gauge group $SU(N)$ and $F<N$ flavors. We propose a class of three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories to describe the effective dynamics on the walls. Our proposal passes several checks, including the exact matching between its vacua and the solutions to the four-dimensional BPS domain wall equations, that we solve in the small mass regime. As the flavor mass is varied, domain walls undergo a second-order phase transition, where multiple vacua coalesce into a single one. For special values of the parameters, the phase transition exhibits supersymmetry enhancement. Our proposal includes and extends previous results in the literature, providing a complete picture of BPS domain walls for $F<N$ massive SQCD. A similar picture holds also for SQCD with gauge group $Sp(N)$ and $F < N+1$ flavors.

QCD domain walls, Chern-Simons theories and holography

Massive QCD at $\theta=\pi$ breaks CP spontaneously and admits domain walls whose dynamics and phases depend on the number of flavors and their masses. We discuss these issues within the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD. Besides showing that this model reproduces all QCD expectations, we address two interesting claims in the literature. The first is about the possibility that the QCD domain-wall theory is fully captured by three-dimensional physics, only. The second regards the existence of quantum phases in certain Chern-Simons theories coupled to fundamental matter. Both claims are supported by the string theory construction.

Orientifolds and duality cascades: confinement before the wall

We consider D-branes at orientifold singularities and discuss two properties of the corresponding low energy four-dimensional effective theories which are not shared, generically, by other Calabi-Yau singularities. The first property is that duality cascades are finite and, unlike ordinary ones, do not require an infinite number of degrees of freedom to be UV-completed. The second is that orientifolds tend to stabilize runaway directions. These two properties can have interesting implications and widen in an intriguing way the variety of gauge theories one can describe using D-branes.

On non-supersymmetric conformal manifolds: field theory and holography

We discuss the constraints that a conformal field theory should enjoy to admit exactly marginal deformations, i.e. to be part of a conformal manifold. In particular, using tools from conformal perturbation theory, we derive a sum rule from which one can extract restrictions on the spectrum of low spin operators and on the behavior of OPE coefficients involving nearly marginal operators. We then consider conformal field theories admitting a gravity dual description, and as such a large-$N$ expansion. We discuss the relation between conformal perturbation theory and loop expansion in the bulk, and show how such connection could help in the search for conformal manifolds beyond the planar limit. Our results do not rely on supersymmetry, and therefore apply also outside the realm of superconformal field theories.
