Moment polytopes of toric exponential families

We show that the moment polytope of a K\"ahler toric manifold, constructed as the torification (in the sense of M. Molitor, K\"ahler toric manifolds from dually flat spaces, arXiv:2109.04839, 2021) of an exponential family defined on a finite sample space, is the projection of a higher-dimensional simplex.

Exponential families and affine Grassmannians

We establish a one-to-one correspondence between the set of minimal exponential families of dimension n defined on a finite sample space {\Omega} and the affine Grassmannian associated to an appropriate vector space of functions.

Toric dually flat manifolds and complex space forms

We classify 1-dimensional connected dually flat manifolds $M$ that are toric in the sense of [Molitor, arXiv:2109.04839], and show that the corresponding torifications are complex space forms. Special emphasis is put on the case where M is an exponential family defined over a finite set.

Geometric spectral theory for K\"ahler functions

We consider K\"ahler toric manifolds $N$ that are torifications of statistical manifolds $\mathcal{E}$ in the sense of [M. Molitor, "K\"ahler toric manifolds from dually flat spaces", arXiv:2109.04839], and prove a geometric analogue of the spectral decomposition theorem in which Hermitian matrices are replaced by K\"ahler functions on $N$. The notion of "spectrum" of a K\"ahler function is defined, and examples are presented. This paper is motivated by the geometrization program of Quantum Mechanics that we pursued in previous works (see, e.g., [M. Molitor, "Exponential families, K\"ahler geometry and quantum mechanics", J. Geom. Phys. 70, 54-80 (2013)]).

Kahler toric manifolds from dually flat spaces

We present a correspondence between real analytic K\"{a}hler toric manifolds and dually flat spaces, similar to Delzant correspondence in symplectic geometry. This correspondence gives rise to a lifting procedure: if $f:M\to M'$ is an affine isometric map between dually flat spaces and if $N$ and $N'$ are K\"{a}hler toric manifolds associated to $M$ and $M'$, respectively, then there is an equivariant K\"{a}hler immersion $N\to N'$. For example, we show that the Veronese and Segre embeddings are lifts of inclusion maps between appropriate statistical manifolds. We also discuss applications to Quantum Mechanics.

One-dimensional exponential families with constant Hessian scalar curvature

We give a complete classification of 1-dimensional exponential families $\mathcal{E}$ defined over a finite space $\Omega=\{x_{0}, ...,x_{n}\}$ whose Hessian scalar curvature is constant. We observe an interesting phenomenon: if $\mathcal{E}$ has constant Hessian scalar curvature, say $\lambda$, then $\lambda=\tfrac{2}{k}$ for some positive integer $k\leq m$. We also discuss the central role played by the binomial distribution in this classification.

Gaussian distributions, Jacobi group and Siegel-Jacobi space

Let $\mathcal{N}$ be the space of Gaussian distribution functions over $\mathbb{R}$, regarded as a 2-dimensional statistical manifold parameterized by the mean $\mu$ and the deviation $\sigma$. In this paper we show that the tangent bundle of $\mathcal{N}$, endowed with its natural K\"ahler structure, is the Siegel-Jacobi space appearing in the context of Number Theory and Jacobi forms. Geometrical aspects of the Siegel-Jacobi space are discussed in detail (completeness, curvature, group of holomorphic isometries, space of K\"ahler functions, relationship to the Jacobi group), and are related to the quantum formalism in its geometrical form, i.e., based on the K\"ahler structure of the complex projective space. This paper is a continuation of our previous work, where we studied the quantum formalism from a geometric and information-theoretical point of view.

La Grassmannienne non-linéaire comme variété fréchétique homogène

Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n. For k \in {0,...,n}, we denote Gr_{k}(M) the set of compact, connected and oriented submanifolds of M of dimension k. This set is called the non-linear Grassmannian. In this article, we endow Gr_{k}(M) with a smooth Fréchet manifold structure and investigate its basic geometrical properties. In particular, if Σ\in Gr_{k}(M), we show that the space of smooth embeddings Emb(Σ,M) is the total space of principal fiber bundle with base space a collection of connected components of Gr_{k}(M). We also show that the connected components of Gr_{k}(M) are homogeneous with respect to the natural action of the group of diffeomorphisms of M.

The group of unimodular automorphisms of a principal bundle and the Euler-Yang-Mills equations

Given a principal bundle G \rightarrow P \rightarrow B (each being compact, connected and oriented) and a G-invariant metric h^{P} on P which induces a volume form μ^{P}, we consider the group of all unimodular automorphisms SAut(P,μ^{P}):={φ\in Diff(P) | φ^{*}μ^{P}=μ^{P} and φis G-equivariant} of P and determines its Euler equation a la Arnold. The resulting equations turn out to be (a particular case of) the Euler-Yang-Mills equations of an incompressible classical charged ideal fluid moving on B. It is also shown that the group SAut(P,μ^{P} is an extension of a certain volume preserving diffeomorphisms group of B by the gauge group Gau(P) of P.

Remarks on the space of volume preserving embeddings

Let (N,g) be a Riemannian manifold. For a compact, connected and oriented submanifold M of N. we define the space of volume preserving embeddings Emb_μ(M,N) as the set of smooth embeddings f:M \rightarrow N such that f*μ^{f}=μ, where μ^{f} (resp. μ) is the Riemannian volume form on f(M) (resp. M) induced by the ambient metric g (the orientation on f(M) being induced by f). In this article, we use the Nash-Moser inverse function Theorem to show that the set of volume preserving embeddings in Emb_μ(M,N) whose mean curvature is nowhere vanishing forms a tame Fréchet manifold, and determine explicitly the Euler-Lagrange equations of a natural class of Lagrangians. As an application, we generalize the Euler equations of an incompressible fluid to the case of an "incompressible membrane" of arbitrary dimension moving in N.

Information geometry and the hydrodynamical formulation of quantum mechanics

Let (M,g) be a compact, connected and oriented Riemannian manifold. We denote D the space of smooth probability density functions on M. In this paper, we show that the Frechet manifold D is equipped with a Riemannian metric g^{D} and an affine connection \nabla^{D} which are infinite dimensional analogues of the Fisher metric and exponential connection in the context of information geometry. More precisely, we use Dombrowski's construction together with the couple (g^{D},\nabla^{D}) to get a (non-integrable) almost Hermitian structure on D, and we show that the corresponding fundamental 2-form is a symplectic form from which it is possible to recover the usual Schrodinger equation for a quantum particle living in M. These results echo a recent paper of the author where it is stressed that the Fisher metric and exponential connection are related (via Dombrowski's construction) to Kahler geometry and quantum mechanics in finite dimension.

Exponential families, Kahler geometry and quantum mechanics

Exponential families are a particular class of statistical manifolds which are particularly important in statistical inference, and which appear very frequently in statistics. For example, the set of normal distributions, with mean {\mu} and deviation {\sigma}, form a 2-dimensional exponential family. In this paper, we show that the tangent bundle of an exponential family is naturally a Kahler manifold. This simple but crucial observation leads to the formalism of quantum mechanics in its geometrical form, i.e. based on the Kahler structure of the complex projective space, but generalizes also to more general Kahler manifolds, providing a natural geometric framework for the description of quantum systems. Many questions related to this "statistical Kahler geometry" are discussed, and a close connection with representation theory is observed. Examples of physical relevance are treated in details. For example, it is shown that the spin of a particle can be entirely understood by means of the usual binomial distribution. This paper centers on the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics, and on the question of its potential generalization through its geometrical formulation.

Remarks on the statistical origin of the geometrical formulation of quantum mechanics

A quantum system can be entirely described by the Kähler structure of the projective space P(H) associated to the Hilbert space H of possible states; this is the so-called geometrical formulation of quantum mechanics. In this paper, we give an explicit link between the geometrical formulation (of finite dimensional quantum systems) and statistics through the natural geometry of the space Pn of non-vanishing probabilities p defined on a finite set En:={x1,...,xn}. More precisely, we use the Fisher metric and the exponential connection (both being natural statistical objects living on Pn) to construct, via the Dombrowski splitting Theorem, a Kähler structure on TPn (the tangent bundle of Pn) which has the property that it induces the natural Kähler structure of a suitably chosen open dense subset of the finite dimensional complex projective space.
