Advanced microwave SQUID multiplexer model incorporating readout power effects and Josephson junction inhomogeneities

We present an advanced model for describing the readout power dependence of the resonance characteristics of a microwave SQUID multiplexer. Our model proves valid for SQUID screening parameters up to $\beta_\mathrm{L}<1$, hence covering the full range of practically relevant design parameters. We demonstrate that our model significantly improves agreement with experimental data compared to the existing models, thereby enabling optimization beyond the previously accessible parameter space. Moreover, our model supports non-sinusoidal current-phase relations of the rf-SQUID's Josephson junction, allowing, for the first time, for the modeling of devices based on Josephson tunnel junctions with inhomogeneous tunnel barriers. We show that the effects of such inhomogeneities are qualitatively similar to, yet distinct from, those of the screening parameter, making their inclusion essential for accurate characterization. Incorporating these effects yields great improved agreement with measurements, even at readout power conditions well beyond typical operating parameters.

High precision measurement of the $^{99}$Tc $\beta$ spectrum

Highly precise measurements of the $^{99}$Tc beta spectrum were performed in two laboratories using metallic magnetic calorimeters. Independent sample preparations, evaluation methods and analyses yield consistent results and the spectrum could be measured down to less than 1 keV. Consistent beta spectra were also obtained via cross-evaluations of the experimental data sets. An additional independent measurement with silicon detectors in a $4\pi$ configuration confirms the spectrum shape above 25 keV. Detailed theoretical calculations were performed including nuclear structure and atomic effects. The spectrum shape was found to be sensitive to the effective value of the axial-vector coupling constant. Combining measurements and predictions, we extracted $Q_{\beta}=$295.82(16) keV and $g_A^{\text{eff}} = 1.530 (83)$. Furthermore, we derived the mean energy of the beta spectrum $\overline{E}_{\beta}$=98.45(20) keV, $\log f = -0.47660 (22)$ and $\log ft = 12.3478 (23)$.

Simultaneous MMC readout using a tailored {\mu}MUX based readout system

Magnetic microcalorimeters (MMCs) are cryogenic, energy-dispersive single-particle detectors providing excellent energy resolution, intrinsically fast signal rise time, quantum efficiency close to 100\%, large dynamic range as well as almost ideal linear response. One of the remaining challenges to be overcome to ultimately allow for the utilization of large-scale MMC based detector arrays with thousands to millions of individual pixels is the realization of a SQUID based multiplexing technique particularly tailored for MMC readout. Within this context, we report on the first truly multiplexed readout of an MMC based detector array using a frequency-division multiplexing approach realized by a custom microwave SQUID multiplexer based readout system.

Simulation framework for microwave SQUID multiplexer optimization

So far, performance prediction and optimization of microwave SQUID multiplexers has largely been based on simple approximate analytical models and experimental results. This is caused by the complexity of the underlying physics and the intricacy of operation and readout parameters. As a simplified description can never account for all potential effects occurring in a real device, we have developed a software framework to simulate the characteristics and performance of a microwave SQUID multiplexer. Our simulation framework is a powerful tool to guide understanding and optimization of microwave SQUID multiplexers and other related devices. It includes common readout schemes such as open-loop or flux ramp modulated readout as well as the nonlinear behavior of Josephson tunnel junctions. Moreover, it accounts for the non-zero response time of superconducting microwave resonators with high loaded quality factors as well as the most significant noise contributions such as amplifier noise, resonator noise as well as SQUID noise. This ultimately leads to a prediction of device performance that is significantly better as compared simple analytical methods. Using the simulation framework, we discuss first steps towards a full microwave SQUID multiplexer optimization and highlight some other applications which our simulation framework can be used for.

Flux ramp modulation based hybrid microwave SQUID multiplexer

We present a hybrid microwave SQUID multiplexer that combines two frequency-division multiplexing techniques to allow multiplexing a given number of cryogenic detectors with only a fraction of frequency encoding resonators. Similar to conventional microwave SQUID multiplexing, our multiplexer relies on inductively coupling non-hysteretic, unshunted rf-SQUIDs to superconducting microwave resonators as well as applying flux ramp modulation for output signal linearization. However, instead of utilizing one resonator per SQUID, we couple multiple SQUIDs to a common readout resonator and encode the SQUID input signals in sidebands of the microwave carrier by varying the flux ramp modulation frequency for each SQUID. We prove the suitability of our approach using a prototype device and argue by means of fundamental information theory that our approach is particularly suited for reading out large cryogenic bolometer arrays.

Analytical model of the readout power and SQUID hysteresis parameter dependence of the resonator characteristics of microwave SQUID multiplexers

We report on the development of an analytical model describing the readout power and SQUID hysteresis parameter dependence of the resonator characteristics used for frequency encoding in microwave SQUID multiplexers. Within the context of this model, we derived the different dependencies by analyzing the Fourier components of the non-linear response of the non-hysteretic rf-SQUID. We show that our model contains the existing model as a limiting case, leading to identical analytical expressions for small readout powers. Considering the approximations we made, our model is valid for rf-SQUID hysteresis parameters $\beta_{\mathrm{L}} < 0.6$ which fully covers the parameter range of existing multiplexer devices. We conclude our work with an experimental verification of the model. In particular, we demonstrate a very good agreement between measured multiplexer characteristics and predictions based on our model.

Software-defined Radio Readout System for the ECHo Experiment

Metallic magnetic calorimeters (MMCs) are cryogenic detectors that offer an excellent energy resolution, a signal rise time of <100 ns, a high dynamic range and almost optimal linearity. MMCs are of high interest for many experiments. One of them, the ECHo experiment, requires the utilization of large MMC detector arrays. The readout of such MMC arrays is a challenging task, which can be tackled using software-defined radios (SDRs). Though SDR is a well-known approach in communications engineering, a dedicated implementation for frequency division multiplexed readout of MMCs is new and one of the technological key elements of the ECHo project. ECHo will be the first experiment to use microwave SQUID multiplexed MMC detectors and therefore pioneering the hardware, firmware and software development in this domain. This paper presents the detailed concepts and current status of the development.
