Smooth autonomous fast dynamo action on the three-torus

We construct a nonempty $C^k$-open family, for some $k\in\mathbb{N}$, of smooth, autonomous, divergence-free velocity fields on $\mathbb{T}^3$ that generate fast dynamos. This resolves the Fast Dynamo Conjecture of Zeldovich and Sakharov, as recorded in Arnold's book of problems. We first construct a family of smooth, time-periodic fast dynamos via a stretch-fold-shear mechanism that applies to a large class of velocity fields. We then realize the associated period dynamics within a smooth autonomous flow using a global Poincaré section and a suitably prescribed return-time function. In both settings, the proof first isolates unstable distributional eigenmodes for the ideal induction operator on an anisotropic Banach space of distributions and then shows that this spectral instability persists under the singular perturbation $\varepsilon Δ$. The resulting estimates are uniform as $\varepsilon\to0$ and stable under $C^k$ perturbations of the velocity field, yielding an open set of smooth fast dynamo vector fields.

Non-selection of Lagrangian trajectories in the zero-noise limit for a class of stochastic regularizations

We prove the lack of selection in the zero-noise limit for solutions to SDEs driven by a divergence-free, Hölder continuous vector field with exponent $α\in(0,1)$, arbitrarily close to $1$ but fixed. The result applies to a broad class of regularizing additive noises, including fractional Brownian motion and stable Lévy processes. The proof combines pathwise Lagrangian arguments, based on the analysis of the deterministic flows associated to mixing velocity fields, with probabilistic estimates coming from the stochastic sewing lemma. This allows to show that lack of selection happens simultaneously on a large set of initial data, whose complement has arbitrarily small Lebesgue measure.

A fast dynamo on the three-torus

We study the kinematic dynamo equation on the three-torus and provide a rigorous proof of fast dynamo action for a time-periodic, divergence-free, Lipschitz velocity field. Our construction is based on a stretch-fold-shear mechanism generating a uniformly hyperbolic flow. To analyze the associated dynamics, we develop anisotropic Banach spaces adapted to the underlying hyperbolic structure, allowing us to recover a discrete spectral picture for the ideal dynamo operator. In the strong-chaos regime, we show that this operator admits an eigenvalue with modulus strictly larger than one. We then prove that this instability persists under the singular perturbation induced by diffusion, yielding exponential growth of the magnetic field uniformly in the vanishing resistivity limit.

Nontrivial absolutely continuous part of anomalous dissipation measures in time

We positively answer Question 2.2 and Question 2.3 in [Bruè, De Lellis, 2023] in dimension $4$ by building new examples of solutions to the forced $4d$ incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which exhibit anomalous dissipation, related to the zeroth law of turbulence [K41]. We also prove that the unique smooth solution $v_ν$ of the $4d$ Navier--Stokes equations with time-independent body forces is $L^\infty$-weakly* converging to a solution of the forced Euler equations $v_0$ as the viscosity parameter $ν\to 0$. Furthermore, the sequence $ν|\nabla v_ν|^2$ is weakly* converging (up to subsequences), in the sense of measure, to $μ\in \mathcal{M} ((0,1) \times \mathbb{T}^4)$ and $μ_T = π_{\#} μ$ has a non-trivial absolutely continuous part where $π$ is the projection onto the time variable. Moreover, we also show that $μ$ is close, up to an error measured in $H^{-1}_{t,x}$, to the Duchon--Robert distribution $\mathcal{D}[v_0]$ of the solution to the $4d$ forced Euler equations. Finally, the kinetic energy profile of $v_0$ is smooth in time. Our result relies on a new anomalous dissipation result for the advection--diffusion equation with a divergence free $3d$ autonomous velocity field and the study of the $3+\frac{1}{2} $ dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. This study motivates some open problems.

Convergence of a least-squares splitting method for the Monge-Ampère equation

We study the theoretical convergence of the nonlinear least-squares splitting method for the Monge-Ampère equation in which each iteration decouples the pointwise nonlinearity from the differential operator and consists of a local nonlinear update followed by the solution of two sequential Poisson-type elliptic problems. While the method performs well in computations, a rigorous convergence theory has remained unavailable. We observe that the iteration admits a reformulation as an alternating-projection scheme on Sobolev spaces $H^m$, $m\ge 0$. At a solution, the Gâteaux differentials of the projection maps are the linear projections onto the corresponding tangent spaces. We prove that these tangent spaces are transverse, and hence the linearization of the alternating-projection map is a contraction by classical Hilbert-space theory for alternating projections. Building on this geometric characterization, we prove linear convergence in $H^2$ of the splitting method on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ for initial data sufficiently close to a solution $u\in H^4$. To the best of our knowledge, this yields the first rigorous convergence result for this splitting method in the periodic setting and provides a functional-analytic explanation for its observed numerical robustness.

A limsup fast dynamo on $\mathbb{T}^3$

We construct a time-dependent, incompressible, and uniformly-in-time Lipschitz continuous velocity field on $\mathbb{T}^3$ that produces exponential growth of the magnetic energy along a subsequence of times, for every positive value of the magnetic diffusivity. Because this growth is not uniform in time but occurs only along a diverging sequence of times, we refer to the resulting mechanism as a limsup fast dynamo. Our construction is based on suitably rescaled Arnold-Beltrami-Childress (ABC) flows, each supported on long time intervals. The analysis employs perturbation theory to establish continuity of the exponential growth rate with respect to both the initial data and the diffusivity parameter. This proves the weak form of the fast dynamo conjecture formulated by Childress and Gilbert on $\mathbb{T}^3$, but the considerably more challenging version proposed by Arnold on $\mathbb{T}^3$ remains an open problem.

Anomalous dissipation via spontaneous stochasticity with a two-dimensional autonomous velocity field

We study anomalous dissipation in the context of passive scalars and we construct a two-dimensional autonomous divergence-free velocity field in $C^α$ (with $α\in (0,1)$ arbitrary but fixed) which exhibits anomalous dissipation. Our proof employs the fluctuation-dissipation formula, which links spontaneous stochasticity with anomalous dissipation. Therefore, we address the issue of anomalous dissipation by showing that the variance of stochastic trajectories, in the zero noise limit, remains positive. Based on this result, we answer Question 2.2 and Question 2.3 in [Bruè & De Lellis '22] regarding anomalous dissipation for the forced three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations.

Trace and Observability Inequalities for Laplace Eigenfunctions on the Torus

We investigate trace and observability inequalities for Laplace eigenfunctions on the d-dimensional torus, with respect to arbitrary Borel measures $μ$. Specifically, we characterize the measures $μ$ for which the inequalities $$ \int |u|^2 d μ\lesssim \int |u|^2 d x \quad \text{(trace)}, \qquad \int |u|^2 d μ\gtrsim \int |u|^2 d x \quad \text{(observability)}$$ hold uniformly for all eigenfunctions $u$ of the Laplacian. Sufficient conditions are derived based on the integrability and regularity of $μ$, while necessary conditions are formulated in terms of the dimension of the support of the measure. These results generalize classical theorems of Zygmund and Bourgain--Rudnick to higher dimensions. Applications include results in the spirit of Cantor--Lebesgue theorems, constraints on quantum limits, and control theory for the Schrödinger equation. Our approach combines several tools: the cluster structure of lattice points on spheres; decoupling estimates; and the construction of eigenfunctions exhibiting strong concentration or vanishing behavior, tailored respectively to the trace and observability inequalities.

On vanishing diffusivity selection for the advection equation

We study the advection equation along vector fields singular at the initial time. More precisely, we prove that for divergence-free vector fields in $L^1_{loc}((0, T ]; BV (\mathbb{T}^d;\mathbb{R}^d))\cap L^2((0, T ) \times\mathbb{T}^d;\mathbb{R}^d)$, there exists a unique vanishing diffusivity solution. This class includes the vector field constructed by Depauw, for which there are infinitely many distinct bounded solutions to the advection equation.

Non-uniqueness of parabolic solutions for advection-diffusion equation

We present a novel example of a divergence-free velocity field $b \in L^\infty ((0,1); L^p (\mathbb{T}^2))$ for $p<2$ arbitrary but fixed which leads to non-unique solutions of advection-diffusion in the class $L^\infty_{t,x} \cap L^2_t H^1_x$ while satisfying the local energy inequality. This result complements the known uniqueness result of bounded solutions for divergence-free and $L^2_{t,x}$ integrable velocity fields. Additionally, we also prove the necessity of time integrability of the velocity field for the uniqueness result. More precisely, we construct another divergence-free velocity field $b \in L^p ((0,1); L^\infty (\mathbb{T}^2))$, for $p< 2$ fixed, but arbitrary, with non-unique aforementioned solutions. Our contribution closes the gap between the regime of uniqueness and non-uniqueness in this context. Previously, it was shown with the convex integration technique that for $d\geq 3$ divergence-free velocity fields $ b \in L^\infty((0,1);L^p (\mathbb{T}^d))$ with $p < \frac{2d}{d+2}$ could lead to non-unique solutions in the space $L^\infty_t L^{\frac{2d}{d-2}}_x \cap L^2_t H^1_x$. Our proof is based on a stochastic Lagrangian approach and does not rely on convex integration.

Alpha-unstable flows and the fast dynamo problem

We construct a time-independent, incompressible, and Lipschitz-continuous velocity field in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that generates a fast kinematic dynamo - an instability characterized by exponential growth of magnetic energy, independent of diffusivity. Specifically, we show that the associated vector transport-diffusion equation admits solutions that grow exponentially fast, uniformly in the vanishing diffusivity limit $\varepsilon\to 0$. Our construction is based on a periodic velocity field $U$ on $\mathbb{T}^3$, such as an Arnold-Beltrami-Childress flow, which satisfies a generic spectral instability property called alpha-instability, established via perturbation theory. This provides a rigorous mathematical framework for the alpha-effect, a mechanism conjectured in the late 1960s to drive large-scale magnetic field generation. By rescaling with respect to $\varepsilon$ and employing a Bloch-type theorem, we extend the solution to the whole space. Finally, through a gluing procedure that spatially localizes the instability, we construct a globally defined velocity field $u$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that drives the dynamo instability.

The helicity distribution for the 3D incompressible Euler equations

This paper is concerned with the helicity associated to solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations. We show that under mild conditions on the regularity of the velocity field of an incompressible ideal fluid it is possible to define a defect distribution describing the local helicity balance. Under suitable regularity assumptions, we also provide the global helicity balance on bounded domains in terms of the boundary contributions of the vorticity, velocity and pressure.

Dissipation enhancing properties for a class of Hamiltonian flows with closed streamlines

We study the evolution of a passive scalar subject to molecular diffusion and advected by an incompressible velocity field on a 2D bounded domain. The velocity field is $u = \nabla^\perp H$, where H is an autonomous Hamiltonian whose level sets are Jordan curves foliating the domain. We focus on the high Péclet number regime ($Pe := ν^{-1} \gg 1$), where two distinct processes unfold on well separated time-scales: streamline averaging and standard diffusion. For a specific class of Hamiltonians with one non-degenerate elliptic point (including perturbed radial flows), we prove exponential convergence of the solution to its streamline average on a subdiffusive time-scale $T_ν\ll ν^{-1}$ ,up to a small correction related to the shape of the streamlines. The time-scale $T_ν$ is determined by the behavior of the period function around the elliptic point. To establish this result, we introduce a model problem arising naturally from the difference between the solution and its streamline average. We use pseudospectral estimates to infer decay in the model problem, and, in fact, this analysis extends to a broader class of Hamiltonian flows. Finally, we perform an asymptotic expansion of the full solution, revealing that the leading terms consist of the streamline average and the solution of the model problem.

Anomalous dissipation and lack of selection in the Obukhov-Corrsin theory of scalar turbulence

The Obukhov-Corrsin theory of scalar turbulence [Obu49, Cor51] advances quantitative predictions on passive-scalar advection in a turbulent regime and can be regarded as the analogue for passive scalars of Kolmogorov's K41 theory of fully developed turbulence [Kol41]. The scaling analysis of Obukhov and Corrsin from 1949-1951 identifies a critical regularity threshold for the advection-diffusion equation and predicts anomalous dissipation in the limit of vanishing diffusivity in the supercritical regime. In this paper we provide a fully rigorous mathematical validation of this prediction by constructing a velocity field and an initial datum such that the unique bounded solution of the advection-diffusion equation is bounded uniformly-in-diffusivity within any fixed supercritical Obukhov-Corrsin regularity regime while also exhibiting anomalous dissipation. Our approach relies on a fine quantitative analysis of the interaction between the spatial scale of the solution and the scale of the Brownian motion which represents diffusion in a stochastic Lagrangian setting. This provides a direct Lagrangian approach to anomalous dissipation which is fundamental in order to get detailed insight on the behavior of the solution. Exploiting further this approach, we also show that for a velocity field in $C^α$ of space and time (for an arbitrary $0 \leq α< 1$) neither vanishing diffusivity nor regularization by convolution provide a selection criterion for bounded solutions of the advection equation. This is motivated by the fundamental open problem of the selection of solutions of the Euler equations as vanishing-viscosity limit of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations and provides a complete negative answer in the case of passive advection.

Onsager critical solutions of the forced Navier-Stokes equations

We answer positively to [BDL22, Question 2.4] by building new examples of solutions to the forced 3d-Navier-Stokes equations with vanishing viscosity, which exhibit anomalous dissipation and which enjoy uniform bounds in the space $L_t^3 C_x^{1/3 - \varepsilon}$, for any fixed $\varepsilon >0$. Our construction combines ideas of [BDL22] and [CCS22].

Non-uniqueness of integral curves for autonomous Hamiltonian vector fields

In this work we prove the existence of an autonomous Hamiltonian vector field in W^{1,r}(T^d;R^d) with r< d-1and d>=4 for which the associated transport equation has non-unique positive solutions. As a consequence of Ambrosio superposition principle, we show that this vector field has non-unique integral curves with a positive Lebesgue measure set of initial data and moreover we show that the Hamiltonian is not constant along these integral curves.

The four-state problem and convex integration for linear differential operators

We show that the four-state problem for general linear differential operators is flexible. The only flexibility result available in this context is the one for the five-state problem for the curl operator due to B. Kirchheim and D. Preiss, [Section 4.3, Rigidity and Geometry of Microstructures, 2003], and its generalization [Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations, 2017]. To build our counterexample, we extend the convex integration method introduced by S. Müller and V. \v Sverák in [Annals of Mathematics, 2003] to linear operators that admit a potential, and we exploit the notion of \emph{large} $T_N$ configuration introduced by C. Förster and L. Sz{é}kelyhidi in [Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations, 2017].
