Limit theorems for elephant random walks remembering the very recent past, with applications to the Takagi-van der Waerden class functions

We study the Takagi-van der Waerden functions $f_r (x)$, a well-known class of continuous but nowhere differentiable functions, from probabilistic point of view. As an application of elephant random walks remembering the very recent past (ERWVRP, a.k.a. symmetric correlated random walks), we obtain precise estimates for the oscillations of $f_r (x)$. We also establish a result on the necessary and sufficient condition for localization of the ERWVRP with variable step length, which can be applied to obtain a complete description of the differentiability properties of the Takagi-van der Waerden class functions.

Phase transitions for a unidirectional elephant random walk with a power law memory II: Some sharper estimates

We continue our study of the unidirectional elephant random walk (uERW) initiated in {\it {Electron. Commun. Probab.}} ({\bf 29} 2024, article no. 78). In this paper we obtain definitive results when the memory exponent $\beta\in (-1, p/(1-p))$. In particular using a coupling argument we obtain the exact asymptotic rate of growth of $S_n$, the location of the uERW at time $n$, for the case $\beta\in (-1, 0] $. Also, for the case $\beta\in (0, p/(1-p))$ we show that $P(S_n \to \infty) \in (0,1)$ and conditional on $\{S_n \to \infty\}$ we obtain the exact asymptotic rate of growth of $S_n$. In addition we obtain the central limit theorem for $S_n$ when $\beta \in (-1, p/(1-p))$.

A note on the long time behavior of the elephant random walk with stops

We study the long time behavior of the elephant random walk with stops, introduced by Kumar, Harbola and Lindenberg (2010), and establish the phase transition of the number of visited points up to time $n$, and the correlation between the position at time $n$ and the number of moves up to time $n$.

The elephant random walk in the triangular array setting

Gut and Stadm\"{u}ller (2021, 2022) initiated the study of the elephant random walk with limited memory. Aguech and El Machkouri (2024) published a paper in which they discuss an extension of results by Gut and Stadtm\"{u}ller (2022) for an "increasing memory" version of the elephant random walk without stops. Here we present a formal definition of the process which has been hinted at Eq. (2.2) in Gut and Stadtm\"{u}ller (2022). This definition is based on the triangular array setting. We give a positive answer to the open problem in Gut and Stadtm\"{u}ller (2022) for the elephant random walk, possibly with stops. We also obtain the CLT for the supercritical case of this model.

Phase transitions for a unidirectional elephant random walk with a power law memory

For the standard elephant random walk, Laulin (2022) studied the case when the increment of the random walk is not uniformly distributed over the past history instead has a power law distribution. We study such a problem for the unidirectional elephant random walk introduced by Harbola, Kumar and Lindenberg (2014). Depending on the memory parameter $p$ and the power law exponent $\beta$, we obtain three distinct phases in one such phase the elephant travels only a finite distance almost surely, and the other two phases are distinguished by the speed at which the elephant travels.

Comparison of limit shapes for Bernoulli first-passage percolation

We consider Bernoulli first-passage percolation on the $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice with $d \geq 2$. The passage time of edge $e$ is $0$ with probability $p$ and $1$ with probability $1-p$, independently of each other. Let $p_c$ be the critical probability for percolation of edges with passage time $0$. When $0\leq p<p_c$, there exists a nonrandom, nonempty compact convex set $\mathcal{B}_p$ such that the set of vertices to which the first-passage time from the origin is within $t$ is well-approximated by $t\mathcal{B}_p$ for all large $t$, with probability one. The aim of this paper is to prove that for $0\leq p<q<p_c$, the Hausdorff distance between $\mathcal{B}_p$ and $\mathcal{B}_q$ grows linearly in $q-p$. Moreover, we mention that the approach taken in the paper provides a lower bound for the expected size of the intersection of geodesics, that gives a nontrivial consequence for the \textit{critical} case.

Rate of moment convergence in the central limit theorem for the elephant random walk

The one-dimensional elephant random walk is a typical model of discrete-time random walk with step-reinforcement, and is introduced by Sch\"{u}tz and Trimper (2004). It has a parameter $\alpha \in (-1,1)$: The case $\alpha=0$ corresponds to the simple symmetric random walk, and when $\alpha>0$ (resp. $\alpha<0$), the mean displacement of the walker at time $n$ grows (resp. vanishes) like $n^{\alpha}$. The walk admits a phase transition at $\alpha=1/2$ from the diffusive behavior to the superdiffusive behavior. In this paper, we study the rate of the moment convergence in the central limit theorem for the position of the walker when $-1 < \alpha \leq 1/2$. We find a crossover phenomenon in the rate of convergence of the $2m$-th moments with $m=2,3,\ldots$ inside the diffusive regime $-1<\alpha<1/2$.

Almost sure behavior of linearly edge-reinforced random walks on the half-line

We study linearly edge-reinforced random walks on $\mathbb{Z}_+$, where each edge $\{x,x+1\}$ has the initial weight $x^{\alpha} \vee 1$, and each time an edge is traversed, its weight is increased by $\Delta$. It is known that the walk is recurrent if and only if $\alpha \leq 1$. The aim of this paper is to study the almost sure behavior of the walk in the recurrent regime. For $\alpha<1$ and $\Delta>0$, we obtain a limit theorem which is a counterpart of the law of the iterated logarithm for simple random walks. This reveals that the speed of the walk with $\Delta>0$ is much slower than $\Delta=0$. In the critical case $\alpha=1$, our (almost sure) bounds for the trajectory of the walk shows that there is a phase transition of the speed at $\Delta=2$.

Limit theorems for the 'laziest' minimal random walk model of elephant type

We consider a minimal model of one-dimensional discrete-time random walk with step-reinforcement, introduced by Harbola, Kumar, and Lindenberg (2014): The walker can move forward (never backward), or remain at rest. For each $n=1,2,\cdots$, a random time $U_n$ between $1$ and $n$ is chosen uniformly, and if the walker moved forward [resp. remained at rest] at time $U_n$, then at time $n+1$ it can move forward with probability $p$ [resp. $q$], or with probability $1-p$ [resp. $1-q$] it remains at its present position. For the case $q>0$, several limit theorems are obtained by Coletti, Gava, and de Lima (2019). In this paper we prove limit theorems for the case $q=0$, where the walker can exhibit all three forms of asymptotic behavior as $p$ is varied. As a byproduct, we obtain limit theorems for the cluster size of the root in percolation on uniform random recursive trees.

Functional central limit theorem for random walks in random environment defined on regular trees

We study Random Walks in an i.i.d. Random Environment (RWRE) defined on $b$-regular trees. We prove a functional central limit theorem (FCLT) for transient processes, under a moment condition on the environment. We emphasize that we make no uniform ellipticity assumptions. Our approach relies on regenerative levels, i.e. levels that are visited exactly once. On the way, we prove that the distance between consecutive regenerative levels have a geometrically decaying tail. In the second part of this paper, we apply our results to Linearly Edge-Reinforced Random Walk (LERRW) to prove FCLT when the process is defined on $b$-regular trees, with $ b \ge 4$, substantially improving the results of the first author (see Theorem 3 of Collevecchio (2006)).

Gaussian fluctuation for superdiffusive elephant random walks

Elephant random walk is a kind of one-dimensional discrete-time random walk with infinite memory: For each step, with probability $\alpha$ the walker adopts one of his/her previous steps uniformly chosen at random, and otherwise he/she performs like a simple random walk (possibly with bias). It admits phase transition from diffusive to superdiffusive behavior at the critical value $\alpha_c=1/2$. For $\alpha \in (\alpha_c, 1)$, there is a scaling factor $a_n$ of order $n^{\alpha}$ such that the position $S_n$ of the walker at time $n$ scaled by $a_n$ converges to a nondegenerate random variable $W$, whose distribution is not Gaussian. Our main result shows that the fluctuation of $S_n$ around $W \cdot a_n$ is still Gaussian. We also give a description of phase transition induced by bias decaying polynomially in time.

On the rate of convergence for Takagi class functions

We consider a generalized version of the Takagi function, which is one of the most famous example of nowhere differentiable continuous functions. We investigate a set of conditions to describe the rate of convergence of Takagi class functions from the probabilistic point of view: The law of large numbers, the central limit theorem, and the law of iterated logarithm. On the other hand, we show that the Takagi function itself does not satisfy the law of large numbers in the usual sense.

Phase transitions for edge-reinforced random walks on the half-line

We study the behaviour of a class of edge-reinforced random walks {on $\mathbb{Z}_+$}, with heterogeneous initial weights, where each edge weight can be updated only when the edge is traversed from left to right. We provide a description for different behaviours of this process and describe phase transitions that arise as trade-offs between the strength of the reinforcement and that of the initial weights. Our result aims to complete the ones given by Davis~\cite{Davis89, Davis90}, Takeshima~\cite{Takeshima00, Takeshima01} and Vervoort~\cite{Vervoort00}.

Periodicity for the Hadamard walk on cycles

The present paper treats the period T_N of the Hadamard walk on a cycle C_N with N vertices. Dukes (2014) considered the periodicity of more general quantum walks on C_N and showed T_2 =2, T_4=8, T_8=24 for the Hadamard walk case. We prove that the Hadamard walk does not have any period except for his case, i.e., N=2, 4, 8. Our method is based on a path counting and cyclotomic polynomials which is different from his approach based on the property of eigenvalues for unitary matrix that determines the evolution of the walk.

Weak limit theorem of a two-phase quantum walk with one defect

We attempt to analyze a one-dimensional space-inhomogeneous quantum walk (QW) with one defect at the origin, which has two different quantum coins in positive and negative parts. We call the QW "the two-phase QW", which we treated concerning localization theorems [10]. The two-phase QW has been expected to be a mathematical model of the topological insulator [16] which is an intense issue both theoretically and experimentally [3,5,11]. In this paper, we derive the weak limit theorem describing the ballistic spreading, and as a result, we obtain the mathematical expression of the whole picture of the asymptotic behavior. Our approach is based mainly on the generating function of the weight of the passages. We emphasize that the time-averaged limit measure is symmetric for the origin [10], however, the weak limit measure is asymmetric, which implies that the weak limit theorem represents the asymmetry of the probability distribution.

The non-uniform stationary measure for discrete-time quantum walks in one dimension

We consider stationary measures of the one-dimensional discrete-time quantum walks (QWs) with two chiralities, which is defined by a 2 times 2 unitary matrix U. In our previous paper [15], we proved that any uniform measure becomes the stationary measure of the QW by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem. This paper reports that non-uniform measures are also stationary measures of the QW except U is diagonal. For diagonal matrices, we show that any stationary measure is uniform. Moreover, we prove that any uniform measure becomes a stationary measure for more general QWs not by solving the eigenvalue problem but by a simple argument.

Limit theorems of a two-phase quantum walk with one defect

We treat a position dependent quantum walk (QW) on the line which we assign two different time-evolution operators to positive and negative parts respectively. We call the model "the two-phase QW" here, which has been expected to be a mathematical model of the topological insulator. We obtain the stationary and time-averaged limit measures related to localization for the two-phase QW with one defect. This is the first result on localization for the two-phase QW. The analytical methods are mainly based on the splitted generating function of the solution for the eigenvalue problem, and the generating function of the weight of the passages of the model. In this paper, we call the methods "the splitted generating function method" and "the generating function method", respectively. The explicit expression of the stationary measure is asymmetric for the origin, and depends on the initial state and the choice of the parameters of the model. On the other hand, the time-averaged limit measure has a starting point symmetry and localization effect heavily depends on the initial state and the parameters of the model. Regardless of the strong effect of the initial state and the parameters, the time-averaged limit measure also suggests that localization can be always observed for our two-phase QW. Furthermore, our results imply that there is an interesting relation between the stationary and time-averaged limit measures when the parameters of the model have specific periodicities, which suggests that there is a possibility that we can analyze localization of the two-phase QW with one defect from the stationary measure.
