$\widetilde{H}$-cobordisms, infinite cyclic covers, and real Seiberg--Witten theory

We study $\widetilde{H}$-cobordisms of distinguished homology handles, introduced by Kawauchi in 1976 using infinite cyclic covers. Despite the extensive development of gauge-theoretic and Floer-theoretic invariants since Kawauchi's work, none were previously known to distinguish smooth and topological $\widetilde{H}$-cobordism. In this paper, we construct asymptotic invariants of distinguished homology handles by applying real Seiberg--Witten theory to finite cyclic covers. Using these invariants, we show that the kernel of the natural map from the smooth $\widetilde{H}$-cobordism group to its topological counterpart contains a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$. We also define spin versions of these groups and show that the kernel of the corresponding natural map contains a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^\infty$.

Real Floer Homotopy Types and $w$-Invariants

We express the local-equivalence classes of real Seiberg--Witten Floer homotopy types for spin Seifert $3$-manifolds with certain odd involutions in terms of the Fukumoto-Furuta $w$-invariant. The proof uses real orbifold Bauer-Furuta invariant for a class of spin $4$-orbifolds constructed by Fukumoto-Furuta-Ue. For torus knots, we prove that the local-equivalence classes of real Floer homotopy types associated with their $2^k$-fold cyclic branched covers are eventually periodic in $k$. Finally, we prove that the integer-valued concordance homomorphisms $\{8δ_R^{(k)}\}_{k\geq1}$ are linearly independent.

Non-kinetic homotopy coherent actions on four-manifolds

We give the first example of a non-kinetic smooth homotopy coherent action of order two on a closed simply connected smooth four-manifold. This action is obtained by restricting a nontrivial smooth homotopy coherent action of the discrete circle group on a stabilized $K3$ surface. We also construct relatively non-kinetic smooth homotopy coherent extensions of boundary involutions over compact smooth $4$-manifolds. In addition, we exhibit boundary involutions that admit locally linear topological extensions but no smooth extensions over the same stabilized fillings. Nevertheless, we prove a Wall-type theorem showing that every free involution on a disjoint union of integral homology spheres extends smoothly over any simply connected smooth filling after sufficiently many stabilizations by $S^2\times S^2$.

Unknotting number, ribbon concordance, and singular instantons

We use equivariant singular instanton Floer theory with the Chern--Simons filtration to obstruct same-sign unknotting operations. We show that, for a large class of slice knots obtained through ribbon concordance, any unknotting sequence of null-homologous twists must contain both signs. The same method gives a $3$--manifold analogue, obstructing certain homology $3$--spheres from surgery on a knot and providing evidence for the monotonicity of the Dehn surgery number under ribbon homology cobordism.

Exotic disks and singular instanton Floer homology

We show that singular instanton Floer homology with the Chern--Simons filtration can be used to produce exotic pairs of slice disks. We moreover construct a strongly invertible $\mathbb{Z}$-slice knot for which any symmetric pair of $\mathbb{Z}$-disks are exotic, and remain exotic after stabilizing by $n\smash{\mathbb{CP}}^2$ or $n\smash{\overline{\mathbb{CP}}}^2$ (or by standard $n\smash{\mathbb{RP}}^2$ or $-n\smash{\mathbb{RP}}^2$) for any $n$. Our methods apply more generally to stabilization by any simply connected definite manifold, or by any number of exotic embedded projective planes of the same sign. We also provide an example of a strongly invertible knot which is $\mathbb{Z}$-slice and equivariantly slice, but not equivariantly $\mathbb{Z}$-slice. Along the way, we partially compute various symmetry actions on the singular instanton Floer complexes of two-bridge knots via an explicit analysis of their traceless $\mathit{SU}(2)$-character varieties.

Cobordism maps in Khovanov homology and singular instanton homology I

Khovanov homology and singular instanton Floer homology are both functorial with respect to link cobordisms. Although the two homology groups are related by a spectral sequence, direct correspondence between the cobordism maps has not been rigorously established. In this paper, we define a cobordism map on the instanton cube complex as a filtered chain map, and prove that it recovers the cobordism maps both in Khovanov homology and singular instanton theory. In a sequel paper, we further extend this cobordism map to immersed cobordisms.

Cobordism maps in Khovanov homology and singular instanton homology II

This paper is a continuation of our previous work, where we defined an embedded cobordism map on the instanton cube complex that recovers the cobordism maps both in Khovanov homology and singular instanton theory. In this paper, we extend this construction to immersed cobordisms, where we define an immersed cobordism map on Khovanov homology and prove that it is compatible with the immersed cobordism map on singular instanton homology. We give two applications: (i) For any smooth, oriented concordance $C$ from a two-bridge torus knot, the induced map $\mathit{Kh}(C)$ on Khovanov homology is injective, and its left inverse is given by the reversal of $C$. (ii) Any pair of relatively exotic surfaces in $D^4$ that are detected by the embedded cobordism map in $\mathit{Kh}$ remain exotic even after applying any number of positive twist moves.

On absolutely exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds

We prove that there exist infinitely many contractible compact smooth $4$-manifolds $C$ that admit absolutely exotic diffeomorphisms of infinite order in $π_0(\mathrm{Diff}(C))$. By ``absolutely", we mean that isotopies are not required to be relative to the boundary. This follows from a theorem that produces absolutely exotic diffeomorphisms from relatively exotic diffeomorphisms, analogous to a theorem of Akbulut and Ruberman that produces absolutely exotic 4-manifolds from relatively exotic 4-manifolds.

Smooth concordance of cables of the figure-eight knot

We prove that every nontrivial cable of the figure-eight knot has infinite order in the smooth knot concordance group. Our main contribution is a uniform proof that applies to all $(2n,1)$-cables of the figure-eight knot. To this end, we introduce a family of concordance invariants $κ_R^{(k)}$, defined via $2^k$-fold branched covers and real Seiberg--Witten Floer $K$-theory. These invariants generalize the real $K$-theoretic Frøyshov invariant developed by Konno, Miyazawa, and Taniguchi.

Cables of the figure-eight knot via real Frøyshov invariants

We prove that the $(2n,1)$-cable of the figure-eight knot is not smoothly slice when $n$ is odd, by using the real Seiberg-Witten Frøyshov invariant of Konno-Miyazawa-Taniguchi. For the computation, we develop an $O(2)$-equivariant version of the lattice homotopy type, originally introduced by Dai-Sasahira-Stoffregen. This enables us to compute the real Seiberg-Witten Floer homotopy type for a certain class of knots. Additionally, we present some computations of Miyazawa's real framed Seiberg-Witten invariant for 2-knots.

A satellite formula for real Seiberg-Witten Floer homotopy types

We establish a satellite formula for the real Seiberg-Witten Floer homotopy types of knots with odd patterns. Using this, we derive several applications to knot concordance theory. The satellite formula follows from a version of the excision theorem for real Floer homotopy types. Additionally, we show that the concordance invariants arising from real Seiberg-Witten theory depend only on the knot's zero-framed surgery.

On the slice-torus invariant $q_M$ from $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant Seiberg--Witten Floer cohomology

We show that Iida--Taniguchi's $\mathbb{Z}$-valued slice-torus invariant $q_M$ cannot be realized as a linear combination of Rasmussen's $s$-invariant, Ozsváth--Szabó's $τ$-invariant, all of the $\mathfrak{sl}_N$-concordance invariants ($N \geq 2$), Baldwin--Sivek's instanton $τ$-invariant, Daemi--Imori--Sato--Scaduto--Taniguchi's instanton $\tilde{s}$-invariant and Sano--Sato's Rasmussen type invariants $\tilde{ss}_c$.

On the connected sums of the $(2,1)$-cable of the figure eight knot

We show that the 3-fold (resp. 6-fold) connected sum of the $(2,1)$-cable of the figure-eight knot cannot bound a smooth null-homologous disk in a punctured $S^2 \times S^2$ (resp. in a punctured $#_2 S^2 \times S^2$. This result is obtained using a real version of the $10/8$-inequality established by Konno, Miyazawa, and Taniguchi.

Exotic Dehn twists and homotopy coherent group actions

We consider the question of extending a smooth homotopy coherent finite cyclic group action on the boundary of a smooth 4-manifold to its interior. As a result, we prove that Dehn twists along any Seifert homology sphere, except the 3-sphere, on their simply connected positive-definite fillings are infinite order exotic.

Exotically knotted closed surfaces from Donaldson's diagonalization for families

We introduce a method to detect exotic surfaces without explicitly using a smooth 4-manifold invariant or an invariant of a 4-manifold-surface pair in the construction. Our main tools are two versions of families (Seiberg-Witten) generalizations of Donaldson's diagonalization theorem, including a real and families version of the diagonalization. This leads to an example of a pair of exotically knotted $\mathbb{R}P^2$'s embedded in a closed 4-manifold whose complements are diffeomorphic, making it the first example of a non-orientable surface with this property. In particular, any invariant of a 4-manifold-surface pair (including invariants from real Seiberg-Witten theory such as Miyazawa's invariant) fails to detect such an exotic $\mathbb{R} P^2$. One consequence of our construction reveals that non-effective embeddings of corks can still be useful in pursuit of exotica. Precisely, starting with an embedding of a cork $C$ in certain a 4-manifold $X$ where the cork-twist does not change the diffeomorphism type of $X$, we give a construction that provides examples of exotically knotted spheres and $\mathbb{R}P^2$'s with diffeomorphic complements in $ C \# S^2 \times S^2 \subset X \# S^2 \times S^2$ or $C \# \mathbb{C}P^2 \subset X \# \mathbb{C}P^2 $. In another direction, we provide infinitely many exotically knotted embeddings of orientable surfaces, closed surface links, and 3-spheres with diffeomorphic complements in once stabilized corks, and show some of these surfaces survive arbitrarily many internal stabilizations. By combining similar methods with Gabai's 4D light-bulb theorem, we also exhibit arbitrarily large difference between algebraic and geometric intersections of certain family of 2-spheres, embedded in a 4-manifold.

Diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary and exotic embeddings

We define family versions of the invariant of 4-manifolds with contact boundary due to Kronheimer and Mrowka and use these to detect exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary. Further, we show the existence of the first example of exotic 3-spheres in a smooth closed 4-manifold with diffeomorphic complements.
