Quantifying quasiparticle chirality in a chiral topological semimetal

Recently, the projection of the electron's spin on its crystal momentum has been proposed as a metric to quantify electronic chirality of Bloch states in crystals, which is expected to affect a wide range of physical properties, such as magnetoelectric and optical responses. However, a direct experimental quantification of this chirality metric over an entire iso-energy surface has remained elusive. Here, we have used spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly probe the electronic chirality by measuring the bulk spin texture of Kramers-Weyl and Weyl cones in RhSi, a chiral topological semimetal with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). After quantifying the SOC splitting of Weyl cones, we determine their spin direction along different azimuthal angles to extract energy dependent the deviations (up to ~40{\deg}) from perfect parallel spin-momentum locking. From these deviations we define an energy-dependent normalized electron chirality density (NECD), a directly accessible metric of bulk electronic chirality. In RhSi, the NECD decreases from 1 at the Kramers-Weyl point to ~0.8 at ~200 meV below it. Finally, we show that this experimentally grounded NECD provides predictive power for magneto-optical and transport responses of chiral materials, exemplified by the longitudinal Edelstein effect.

Spin-orbit-dependent lifetimes of long-range Rydberg molecules

Long-range Rydberg molecules (LRMs) form when a highly excited Rydberg electron scatters from ground-state atoms inside its orbit, creating oscillatory, long-range potentials. We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of caesium dimers correlated to 402P3/2 Rydberg states, with an emphasis on decay via autoionisation (associative ionisation). Our model includes a relativistic treatment of electron-atom scattering with spin-orbit coupling, the perturber's hyperfine structure, and coupling of vibrational levels to a continuum of short-range decay channels. Calculated potential-energy curves predict two families of wells: outer wells near the classical outer turning point supporting long-lived states, and inner wells at shorter range whose lifetimes are limited by tunneling and subsequent vibronic decay. Using photoassociation in an ultracold Cs gas and an analysis of pulsed-field-ionisation signals which are highly selective for the detection of molecules, we assign resonances by binding energy and measure lifetimes. The measured lifetimes of inner-well states increase systematically with increasing detuning and agree with calculated lifetimes; detection of Cs2+ product ions supports autoionisation as a dominant channel. We show that the lifetimes are strongly reduced by spin-orbit interactions in the transient Cs-collision complex, which lift the near-degeneracy in Omega observed for states in the outer well and control the inner-well binding. The identified states also provide promising pathways to create ultracold molecules in ion-pair states.

Realization of topological Thouless pumping in a synthetic Rydberg dimension

The simulation of synthetic dimensions by manipulating internal states of atoms and molecules has opened the door to investigate regimes outside those of more traditional quantum many-body platforms. Highly excited Rydberg states of atoms are a particularly promising platform to engineer Hamiltonians in such synthetic dimensions due to their large number of addressable states and the readily available technologies for manipulating their couplings and for detecting them. In this letter, we demonstrate the realization of topological quantum pumping in synthetic dimensions by engineering a one-dimensional Rice-Mele chain from the Rydberg states of cesium atoms, and manipulating their couplings in a time-dependent fashion through radio-frequency fields. We implement Thouless protocols for topological pumping and investigate the efficiency for pumping an effective quantum particle as a function of the period of pumping and other parameters while allowing for rates of change that are not necessarily adiabatic. We demonstrate that optimal pumping efficiencies of up to 90% can be achieved when the pump is operated in the topological Thouless regime, even when the pumping is accompanied by the wave-packet spread that arises from the energy dispersion of the particle along the synthetic dimension.

The role of Coulomb anti-blockade in the photoassociation of long-range Rydberg molecules

We present a new mechanism contributing to the detection of photoassociated long-range Rydberg molecules via pulsed-field ionization: ionic products, created by the decay of a long-range Rydberg molecule, modify the excitation spectrum of surrounding ground-state atoms and facilitate the excitation of further atoms into Rydberg states by the photoassociation light. Such an ion-mediated excitation mechanism has been previously called "Coulomb anti-blockade". Pulsed-field ionisation typically doesn't discriminate between the ionization of a long-range Rydberg molecule and an isolated Rydberg atom, and thus the number of atomic ions detected by this mechanism is not proportional to the number of long-range Rydberg molecules present in the probe volume. By combining high-resolution UV and RF spectroscopy of a dense, ultracold gas of cesium atoms, theoretical modeling of the molecular level structures of long-range Rydberg molecules bound below nP_3/2 Rydberg states of cesium, and a rate model of the photoassociation and decay processes, we unambiguously identify the signatures of this detection mechanism in the photoassociation of long-range Rydberg molecules bound below atomic asymptotes with negative Stark shifts.

Mn$_3$O$_4$(001) film growth on Ag(001) - a systematic study using NEXAFS, STM, and LEED

The film growth of Mn$_3$O$_4$(001) films on Ag(001) up to film thicknesses of almost seven unit cells of Mn$_3$O$_4$ has been monitored using a complementary combination of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). The oxide films have been prepared by molecular beam epitaxy. Using NEXAFS, the identity of the Mn oxide has clearly been determined as Mn$_3$O$_4$. For the initial stages of growth, oxide islands with p(2$\times$1) and p(2$\times$2) structures are formed, which are embedded into the substrate. For Mn$_3$O$_4$ coverages up to 1.5 unit cells a p(2$\times$1) structure of the films is visible in STM and LEED. Further increase of the thickness leads to a phase transition of the oxide films resulting in an additional c(2$\times$2) structure with a 45$^\circ$ rotated atomic pattern. The emerging film structures are discussed on the basis of a sublayer model of the Mn$_3$O$_4$ spinel unit cell. While the polarity of the island edges determines the structure of initial islands, the surface energy of thicker layers is remarkably reduced by a film restructuring.

XMCD studies of thin Co films on BaTiO$_3$

Different layer thicknesses of Cobalt ranging from 2.6 {\AA} (1.5 ML) up to 55 {\AA} (30.5 ML) deposited on ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$ have been studied regarding their magnetic behavior. The layers have been characterized using XMCD spectroscopy at remanent magnetization. After careful data analysis the magnetic moments of the Cobalt could be determined using the sum rule formalism. There is a sudden and abrupt onset in magnetism starting at thicknesses of 9 {\AA} (5 ML) of Cobalt for measurements at 120 K and of 10 {\AA} (5.5 ML) if measured at room temperature. Initial island growth and subsequent coalescence of Co on BaTiO$_3$ is suggested to explain the sudden onset. In that context, no magnetically dead layers are observed.
