The Kondo effect in ferromagnetic quantum critical CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$

The mechanism of a pressure-induced quantum critical point in the heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ has attracted interest, as ferromagnetic quantum criticality in a clean itinerant Ce compound is typically avoided. The localized versus itinerant character of the 4\textit{f} electrons is a key aspect for understanding this behavior. We investigated the electronic structure of the 4\textit{f} shell in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ using core-level photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, demonstrating the hybridization of Ce 4\textit{f} with the conduction electrons. Linearly polarized x-ray absorption reveals a temperature-dependent linear dichroism consistent with the crystal-electric-field (CEF) sequence as inferred from the static susceptibility. This dichroism cannot be described by an ionic full-multiplet model alone, but is reproduced by including the Kondo effect within a single-impurity Anderson model in the non crossing approximation (SIAM/NCA). The Kondo effect mixes higher lying crystal-field states into a resulting multiorbital ground state with 4\textit{f} occupancy \textit{n}$_f$\,$\sim$\,0.9. Deviations at low temperatures between the measured linear dichroism and calculated dichroism suggest an orbital-dependent Kondo effect. A scenario in which there is a multiorbital ground state and orbital-dependent Kondo hybridization should be a starting point for a model of pressure-induced criticality in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$.

Unveiling orbital landscapes in strongly correlated bulk nickelates with $s$-NIXS

We leverage $s$-orbital non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering ($s$-NIXS) to perform orbital imaging on three bulk rare-earth nickelates spanning a range of formal nickel valence (3$d$ electron filling) from Ni$^{3+}$ (3$d^7$) to Ni$^{1+}$ (3$d^9$). Our results directly reveal the ground states of these compounds all with minimal theoretical input. In particular, we demonstrate the low-spin orbital configuration of trivalent LaNiO$_3$, the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ configuration of monovalent LaNiO$_2$, and resolve the effective $e_g$ crystal field splitting in the distorted octahedral environment of divalent La$_2$NiO$_4$. This work illustrates the potential of $s$-NIXS to study the ground state and excited states of strongly correlated materials without needing complex theoretical analysis of spectroscopic data.

UCd$_{11}$: A strongly localized 5$f^3$ material

UCd$_{11}$ is an antiferromagnetic uranium intermetallic compound ($T_{\rm N}$ = 5.3K) with enhanced electron mass and uranium-uranium spacings nearly twice the Hill limit, suggesting a weakly hybridized 5$f$ electronic character. Various x-ray spectroscopy techniques indicate that uranium in UCd$_{11}$ adopts the formal U$^{3+}$ 5$f^3$ configuration, while core-level photoemission spectroscopy (PES) data of UCd$_{11}$ reveal only a weak satellite feature, typically interpreted as a signature of itinerancy. In this work, we present density functional theory (DFT) combined with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations of UCd$_{11}$, using material-specific parameters tuned to reproduce valence-band PES spectra at different photon energies, thereby exploiting the energy dependence of photoionization cross sections. Our results demonstrate that UCd$_{11}$ is a highly localized uranium 5$f^3$ system. Furthermore, core-level spectra obtained from a DFT+DMFT Anderson impurity model reveal that, contrary to common assumptions, the presence or absence of satellite structures is not a reliable indicator of strong correlations or itinerant 5$f$ behavior.

Real-Space Dynamic Electron Correlation in Beryllium

Electron correlation in solid has a major impact on material properties. However, it has been studied mainly by theory, with very limited direct experimental investigations. Here, we demonstrate that dynamic electron correlation function can be experimentally measured using inelastic X-ray scattering on polycrystalline beryllium. The data are expressed as the energy-resolved dynamic pair-distribution function. Our results confirm the size of the exchange-correlation hole as ~2 {\AA}, consistent with theoretical expectations. However, at the plasmon energy of ~21 eV, the exchange-correlation hole is extended up to 4-5 {\AA}, suggesting a unique influence of the dynamic plasmon state.

Superconductivity suppression and bilayer decoupling in Pr substituted YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$

The mechanism behind superconductivity suppression induced by Pr substitutions in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) has been a mystery since its discovery: in spite of being isovalent to Y$^{3+}$ with a small magnetic moment, it is the only rare-earth element that has a dramatic impact on YBCO's superconducting properties. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and DFT+$U$ calculations, we uncover how Pr substitution modifies the low-energy electronic structure of YBCO. Contrary to the prevailing Fehrenbacher-Rice (FR) and Liechtenstein-Mazin (LM) models, the low energy electronic structure contains no signature of any $f$-electron hybridization or new states. Yet, strong electron doping is observed primarily on the antibonding Fermi surface. Meanwhile, we reveal major electronic structure modifications to Cu-derived states with increasing Pr substitution: a pronounced CuO$_2$ bilayer decoupling and an enhanced CuO chain hopping, implying indirect electron-release pathways beyond simple 4$f$ state ionization. Our results challenge the long-standing FR/LM mechanism and establish Pr substituted YBCO as a potential platform for exploring correlation-driven phenomena in coupled 1D-2D systems.

High-resolution valence band RIXS at the actinide M$_{4,5}$-edges

Understanding the electronic structure of actinide materials is crucial for both fundamental research and nuclear applications. The partially filled 5f shells exhibit complex behavior due to strong correlations and ligand hybridization, requiring advanced spectroscopic techniques. Here, we report on the development and application of high-resolution valence-band resonant inelastic x-ray spectroscopy (VB-RIXS) experiments at the uranium M$_{4,5}$ edges (3551 and 3725\,eV). We present data of UO$_2$, a well-established model actinide compound. VB-RIXS is particularly well suited for probing the 5f-shell electronic structure, as it probes, in contrast to core-to-core RIXS, excitations without leaving a high-energy core hole in the final state. In VB-RIXS, we achieve energy resolutions of 50\,meV (M$_5$) and 90\,meV (M$_4$), enabling the resolution of multiplet excitations and crystal-field effects, as well as charge-transfer and fluorescence-like features with unprecedented clarity. As such, high resolution VB-RIXS offers direct insights into both low-energy, near ground-state properties and high-energy hybridization and covalency effects. Our results demonstrate the power of VB-RIXS as a versatile and powerful tool for probing the strongly correlated electronic structure of actinide materials, providing essential input for quantitative modeling and the validation of theoretical concepts.

UTe$_2$: a narrow band superconductor

We investigate the nature of the 5$f$ electrons in the unconventional odd-parity superconductor UTe$_2$, focusing on the degree of covalency, localization versus itinerancy, and dominant electronic configuration. This is achieved using density functional theory (DFT) in combination with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. A key aspect of our approach is the material-specific tuning of the double-counting correction parameter, $\mu_{\rm dc}$, within the DFT+DMFT part. This tuning is guided by the energy dependence of photo-ionization cross-sections in valence band photoelectron spectroscopy. The reliability of the parameters is confirmed by the accurate reproduction of the angle-resolved valence-band photoemission spectra and the U 4$f$ core-level data. The DFT+DMFT model reveals that in UTe$_2$ U 5$f^n$ configurations with n=1 to 4 contribute to the ground state, with the 5$f^2$ configuration being most prevalent and an average 5$f$ shell fillings close to 2.5. The model further suggests that the 5$f$ electrons form narrow bands and that charge fluctuations due to degeneracy play a role in addition to coherent valence dynamics arising from hybridization with the conduction bath. Additionally, the significance of the U 6$d$ states in UTe$_2$ is discussed.

Quantifying the U $5f$ covalence and degree of localization in U intermetallics

A procedure for quantifying the U $5f$ electrons' covalence and degree of localization in U intermetallic compounds is presented. To this end, bulk sensitive hard and soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were utilized in combination with density-functional theory (DFT) plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. The energy dependence of the photoionization cross-sections allows the disentanglement of the U\,$5f$ contribution to the valence band from the various other atomic subshells so that the computational parameters in the DFT\,+\,DMFT can be reliably determined. Applying this method to UGa$_2$ and UB$_2$ as model compounds from opposite ends of the (de)localization range, we have achieved excellent simulations of the valence band and core-level spectra. The width in the distribution of atomic U\,$5f$ configurations contributing to the ground state, as obtained from the calculations, quantifies the correlated nature and degree of localization of the U\,5$f$. The findings permit answering the longstanding question why different spectroscopic techniques give seemingly different numbers for the U 5$f$ valence in intermetallic U compounds.

Stabilization of U 5$f^2$ configuration in UTe$_2$ through U 6d dimers in the presence of Te2 chains

We investigate the topological superconductor candidate UTe$_2$ using high-resolution valence-band resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the U $M_{4,5}$-edges. We observe atomic-like low-energy excitations that support the correlated nature of this unconventional superconductor. These excitations originate from the U $5f^2$ configuration, which is unexpected since the short Te2-Te2 distances exclude Te2 being 2-. By utilizing the photoionization cross-section dependence of the photoemission spectra in combination with band structure calculations, we infer that the stabilization of the U $5f^2$ configuration is due to the U $6d$ bonding states in the U-dimers acting as a charge reservoir. Our results emphasize that the description of the physical properties should commence with a $5f^2$ $ansatz$.

Fe substitution in URu$_2$Si$_2$: singlet magnetism in an extended Doniach phase diagram

The application of pressure as well as the successive substitution of Ru with Fe in the hidden order (HO) compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ leads to the formation of the large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAFM). Here we have investigated the substitution series URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ from $x$\,=\,0.0 to 2.0 by U\,4$f$ core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and have observed non-monotonic changes in the spectra. The initial increase and subsequent decrease of the spectral weight of the 4$f$ core level satellite with increasing $x$ stands for a non-monotonic 5$f$ filling across the substitution series. The competition of chemical pressure and increase of the density of states at the Fermi energy, both due to substitution of Ru with Fe, can explain such a behavior. An extended Doniach phase diagram including the $x$ dependence of the density of states is proposed. Also in URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ the ground state is a singlet or quasi-doublet state consisting of two singlets. Hence, the formation of magnetic order in the URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ substitution series must be explained within a singlet magnetism model.

Spectroscopic evidence of Kondo-induced quasi-quartet in CeRh$_2$As$_2$

CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is a new multiphase superconductor with strong suggestions for an additional itinerant multipolar ordered phase. The modeling of the low temperature properties of this heavy fermion compound requires a quartet Ce$^{3+}$ crystal-field ground state. Here we provide the evidence for the formation of such a quartet state using x-ray spectroscopy. Core-level photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy confirm the presence of Kondo hybridization in CeRh$_2$As$_2$. The temperature dependence of the linear dichroism unambiguously reveils the impact of Kondo physics for coupling the Kramer's doublets into an effective quasi-quartet. Non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering data find that the $|\Gamma_7^- \rangle$ state with its lobes along the 110 direction of the tetragonal structure ($xy$ orientation) contributes most to the multi-orbital ground state of CeRh$_2$As$_2$.

Singlet magnetism in intermetallic UGa$_2$ unveiled by inelastic x-ray scattering

Using high resolution tender-x-ray resonant inelastic scattering and hard-x-ray non-resonant inelastic scattering beyond the dipole limit we were able to detect electronic excitations in intermetallic UGa$_2$ that are highly atomic in nature. Analysis of the spectral lineshape reveals that the local $5f^2$ configuration characterizes the correlated nature of this ferromagnet. The orientation and directional dependence of the spectra indicate that the ground state is made of the $\Gamma_1$ singlet and/or $\Gamma_6$ doublet symmetry. With the ordered moment in the $ab$ plane, we infer that the magnetism originates from the higher lying $\Gamma_6$ doublet being mixed with the $\Gamma_1$ singlet due to inter-site exchange, qualifying UGa$_2$ to be a true quantum magnet. The ability to observe atomic excitations is crucial to resolve the on-going debate about the degree of localization versus itineracy in U intermetallics.

Quantitative investigation of the 4$f$ occupation in the quasikagome Kondo lattice CeRh$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$Sn

CeRhSn with the Ce atoms forming a quasikagome lattice in the hexagonal plane has recently been discussed in the context of quantum criticality driven by magnetic frustration. Furthermore, it has been reported that the successive substitution of Rh by Pd leads to magnetic order. Here we have investigated the change of the 4$f$ occupation in the substitution series CeRh$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$Sn for for $x$ = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.75 by means of photoelectron spectroscopy with hard x-rays (HAXPES). The quantitative analysis of the core level spectra with a combined full multiplet and configuration interaction analysis shows a smooth decrease of the 4$f^0$ contribution with rising $x$ due to an increase of the effective 4$f$ binding energy $\varepsilon_{4f}$ and the reduction of the effective hybridization $V_\text{eff}$. We further compare valence band data with the calculated partial density of states and find that the Pd 4$d$ states are about 1eV further away from the Ce 4$f$ states at the Fermi energy than the Rh 4$d$ states. In fact, the effective binding energy $\varepsilon_{4f}$ of the 4$f$ states in the configuration interaction analysis of the core level spectra decreases by the same amount.

Possible multi-orbital ground state in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$

The crystal-field ground state wave function of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ has been investigated with linear polarized $M$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy from 250mK to 250K, thus covering the superconducting ($T_{\text{c}}$=0.6K), the Kondo ($T_{\text{K}}$$\approx$20K) as well as the Curie-Weiss regime. The comparison with full-multiplet calculations shows that the temperature dependence of the experimental linear dichroism is well explained with a $\Gamma_7^{(1)}$ crystal-field ground-state and the thermal population of excited states at around 30meV. The crystal-field scheme does not change throughout the entire temperature range thus making the scenario of orbital switching unlikely. Spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the Ce 4$f^0$ configuration in the ground state is consistent with the possibility for a multi-orbital character of the ground state. We estimate from the Kondo temperature and crystal-field splitting energies that several percents of the higher lying $\Gamma_6$ state and $\Gamma_7^{(2)}$ crystal-field states are mixed into the primarily $\Gamma_7^{(1)}$ ground state. This estimate is also supported by re-normalized band-structure calculations that uses the experimentally determined crystal-field scheme.

Impact of Fe substitution on the electronic structure of URu$_2$Si$_2$

The application of pressure as well as the successive substitution of Ru with Fe in the hidden order (HO) compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ leads to the formation of the large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAFM). Here we have investigated the substitution series URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ with $x$ = 0.2 and 0.3 with non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) and 4$f$ core-level photoelectron spectroscopy with hard x-rays (HAXPES). NIXS shows that the substitution of Fe has no impact on the symmetry of the ground-state wave function. In HAXPES we find no shift of spectral weight that would be indicative for a change of the 5$f$-electron count. Consequently, changes in the exchange interaction $\cal{J}$ due to substitution must be minor so that the conjecture of chemical pressure seems unlikely. An alternative scenario is discussed, namely the formation of long range magnetic order due the substitution induced local enhancement of the magnetization in the vicinity of the $f$-electron ions while the overall electronic structure remains unchanged.

Dual nature of 5$f$ electrons in the isostructural UM$_2$Si$_2$ family: from antiferro- to Pauli paramagnetism via hidden order

Using inelastic x-ray scattering beyond the dipole limit and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we establish the dual nature of the U $5f$ electrons in UM$_2$Si$_2$ (M = Pd, Ni, Ru, Fe), regardless of their degree of delocalization. We have observed that the compounds have in common a local atomic-like state that is well described by the U $5f^2$ configuration with the $\Gamma_1^{(1)}$ and $\Gamma_2$ quasi-doublet symmetry. The amount of the U 5$f^3$ configuration, however, varies considerably across the UM$_2$Si$_2$ series, indicating an increase of U5$f$ itineracy in going from M=Pd to Ni to Ru, and to the Fe compound. The identified electronic states explain the formation of the very large ordered magnetic moments in UPd$_2$Si$_2$ and UNi$_2$Si$_2$, the availability of orbital degrees of freedom needed for the hidden order in URu$_2$Si$_2$ to occur, as well as the appearance of Pauli paramagnetism in UFe$_2$Si$_2$. A unified and systematic picture of the U$M_2$Si$_2$ compounds may now be drawn, thereby providing suggestions for new experiments to induce hidden order and/or superconductivity in U compounds with the tetragonal body-centered ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure.

f-electron charge densities probed using core level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Strongly correlated materials are characterized by the presence of electron-electron interactions in their electronic structure. They often have remarkable properties and transitions between competing phases of very different electronic and magnetic order. This thesis focuses on strongly correlated $f$-electron compounds containing Ce, Sm, and U. These materials exhibit a so-called heavy-fermion or Kondo-lattice behavior. They can become insulating due to hybridization effects (Kondo-insulator) or develop multipolar (hidden) order. Kondo insulators have recently been discussed in the context of strongly correlated topological insulators. This new aspect caused an enormous activity in the field of Kondo insulators, theoretically as well as experimentally. Multipolar order as well as the formation of a Kondo insulating state strongly depend on the symmetry of the $f$ states involved. Also the character of the surface states in a topological insulator is determined by the properties of the bulk states. Therefore the scope of this thesis has been to unveil the underlying symmetries of the bulk $f$ states. Here the compounds CeB$_6$, UO$_2$, and URu$_2$Si$_2$, which exhibit multipolar order, as well as the Kondo insulators (semimetals) SmB$_6$ and CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ have been studied.

Origin of Ising magnetism in Ca3Co2O6 unveiled by orbital imaging

The one-dimensional cobaltate Ca3Co2O6 is an intriguing material having an unconventional magnetic structure, displaying quantum tunneling phenomena in its magnetization. Using a newly developed experimental method, s-core-level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (s-NIXS), we were able to image the atomic Co 3d orbital that is responsible for the Ising magnetism in this system. We show that we can directly observe that it is the complex d2 orbital occupied by the sixth electron at the high-spin Co-trig{3+} (d6) sites that generates this behavior. This is extremely rare in the research field of transition metal compounds, and is only made possible by the delicately balanced prismatic trigonal coordination. The ability to directly relate the orbital occupation with the local crystal structure is essential to model the magnetic properties of this system.
