Boundary behavior of limit-interfaces for the Allen-Cahn equation on Riemannian manifolds with Neumann boundary condition

We study the boundary behavior of any limit-interface arising from a sequence of general critical points of the Allen-Cahn energy functionals on a smooth bounded domain. Given any such sequence with uniform energy bounds, we prove that the limit-interface is a free boundary varifold which is integer rectifiable up to the boundary. This extends earlier work of Hutchinson and Tonegawa on the interior regularity of such limit-interface. A key novelty in our result is that no convexity assumption of the boundary is required and it is valid even when the limit-interface clusters near the boundary. Moreover, our arguments are local and thus works in the Riemannian setting. This work provides the first step towards the regularity theory for the Allen-Cahn min-max theory for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces, which was developed in the Almgren-Pitts setting by the first-named author and Zhou.

Contracting convex surfaces by mean curvature flow with free boundary on convex barriers

We consider the mean curvature flow of compact convex surfaces in Euclidean $3$-space with free boundary lying on an arbitrary convex barrier surface with bounded geometry. When the initial surface is sufficiently convex, depending only on the geometry of the barrier, the flow contracts the surface to a point in finite time. Moreover, the solution is asymptotic to a shrinking half-sphere lying in a half space. This extends, in dimension two, the convergence result of Stahl for umbilic barriers to general convex barriers. We introduce a new perturbation argument to establish fundamental convexity and pinching estimates for the flow. Our result can be compared to a celebrated convergence theorem of Huisken for mean curvature flow of convex hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds.

Free boundary minimal surfaces in the unit ball : recent advances and open questions

In this survey, we discuss some recent results on free boundary minimal surfaces in the Euclidean unit-ball. The subject has been a very active field of research in the past few years due to the seminal work of Fraser and Schoen on the extremal Steklov eigenvalue problem. We review several different techniques of constructing examples of embedded free boundary minimal surfaces in the unit ball. Next, we discuss some uniqueness results for free boundary minimal disks and the conjecture about the uniqueness of critical catenoid. We also discuss several Morse index estimates for free boundary minimal surfaces. Moreover, we describe estimates for the first Steklov eigenvalue on such free boundary minimal surfaces and various smooth compactness results. Finally, we mention some sharp area bounds for free boundary minimal submanifolds and related questions.

Chord Shortening Flow and a Theorem of Lusternik and Schnirelmann

We introduce a new geometric flow called the chord shortening flow which is the negative gradient flow for the length functional on the space of chords with end points lying on a fixed submanifold in Euclidean space. As an application, we give a simplified proof of a classical theorem of Lusternik and Schnirelmann (and a generalization by Riede and Hayashi) on the existence of multiple orthogonal geodesic chords. For a compact convex planar domain, we show that any convex chord which is not orthogonal to the boundary would shrink to a point in finite time under the flow.

Min-max theory for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces I - regularity theory

In 1960s, Almgren initiated a program to find minimal hypersurfaces in compact manifolds using min-max method. This program was largely advanced by Pitts and Schoen-Simon in 1980s when the manifold has no boundary. In this paper, we finish this program for general compact manifold with nonempty boundary. As a result, we prove the existence of a smooth embedded minimal hypersurface with free boundary in any compact smooth Euclidean domain. An application of our general existence result combined with the work of Marques and Neves shows that for any compact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and convex boundary, there exist infinitely many embedded minimal hypersurfaces with free boundary which are properly embedded.

Curvature estimates for stable free boundary minimal hypersurfaces

In this paper, we prove uniform curvature estimates for immersed stable free boundary minimal hypersurfaces which satisfy a uniform area bound. Our result is a natural generalization of the celebrated Schoen-Simon-Yau interior curvature estimates up to the free boundary. A direct corollary of our curvature estimates is a smooth compactness theorem which is an essential ingredient in the min-max theory of free boundary minimal hypersurfaces developed by the last two authors. We also prove a monotonicity formula for free boundary minimal submanifolds in Riemannian manifolds for any dimension and codimension. For the case of $3$-manifolds with boundary, we prove a stronger curvature estimate for properly embedded stable free boundary minimal surfaces without any assumption on the area bound. This generalizes Schoen's interior curvature estimates to the free boundary setting. Our proof uses the theory of minimal laminations developed by Colding and Minicozzi.

Compactness of the space of embedded minimal surfaces with free boundary in three-manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and convex boundary

We prove a lower bound for the first Steklov eigenvalue of embedded minimal hypersurfaces with free boundary in a compact $n$-dimensional manifold which has nonnegative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary. When $n=3$, this implies apriori area and curvature estimates for these minimal surfaces in terms of the geometry of the ambient manifold and the topology of the minimal surface. An important consequence of the estimate is a smooth compactness result for embedded minimal surfaces with free boundary when the topological type of these minimal surfaces is fixed.

A General Existence Theorem for Embedded Minimal Surfaces with Free Boundary

In this paper, we develop a general existence theory for properly embedded minimal surfaces with free boundary in any compact Riemannian 3-manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$. The main feature of our result is that no convexity assumption is required on $\partial M$. Our proof uses a variant of the min-max construction first considered by Almgren and Pitts. Recently, Colding-De Lellis gave a simplified proof of the interior regularity and here, we prove the boundary regularity of the limiting embedded minimal surfaces at their free boundaries. In addition, we define a topological invariant, the filling genus, for compact 3-manifolds with boundary and show that we can bound the genus of the minimal surface constructed above in terms of the filling genus of the ambient manifold $M$.

A Sharp Comparison Theorem for Compact Manifolds with Mean Convex Boundary

Let $M$ be a compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and mean convex boundary $\partial M$. Assume that the mean curvature $H$ of the boundary $\partial M$ satisfies $H \geq (n-1) k >0$ for some positive constant $k$. In this paper, we prove that the distance function $d$ to the boundary $\partial M$ is bounded from above by $\frac{1}{k}$ and the upper bound is achieved if and only if $M$ is isometric to an $n$-dimensional Euclidean ball of radius $\frac{1}{k}$.

Colloids in a bacterial bath: simulations and experiments

We present a joint experimental and computational study of the effect of bacterial motion on micron-scale colloids contained in a two-dimensional suspension of Bacillus subtilis. With respect to previous work using E. coli, here we introduce a novel experimental set-up that allows us to realise a two-dimensional bacterial suspension insensitive to either evaporation or fluid flow. By analysing the mean square displacements of both bacteria and colloids, we confirm the existence of a crossover from super-diffusive behaviour at short time scales to normal diffusion at longer times. We also study the same two-dimensional system by means of numerical simulations, using a suspension of self-propelled dumbbells or the Vicsek model, which has been previously used to study the dynamics of active particles. Our numerical results obtained with both models are in broad agreement with the experimental trends, but only the dumbbell simulations can match the experimental data quantitatively. The level of agreement we find suggest that steric interactions due to collisions are important players in determining collective motion of the bacterial bath, and should complement hydrodynamic interactions in experiments.

On complete stable minimal surfaces in 4-manifolds with positive isotropic curvature

We prove the nonexistence of stable immersed minimal surfaces uniformly conformally equivalent to the complex plane in any complete orientable four-dimensional Riemannian manifold with uniformly positive isotropic curvature. We also generalize the same nonexistence result to higher dimensions provided that the ambient manifold has uniformly positive complex sectional curvature. The proof consists of two parts, assuming an "eigenvalue condition" on the Cauchy-Riemann operator of a holomorphic bundle, we prove (1) a vanishing theorem for these holomorphic bundles on the complex plane; (2) an existence theorem for holomorphic sections with controlled growth by Hormander's weighted L^2-method.
